Aptly described by its designer, world renowned naval architect Jean-Jacques Coste as a “pal-ace in the sea,” the giant trimaran, which, by estimates cost around US$52.25 million to build, is the mother of status symbols—hands down indeed.
Unique in its own features, what also makes the UltraLuxum CXL quite interesting is that it doesn’t run on oil; it’s so environmentally-friendly that whoever owns one won’t have the slightest guilt about splurging millions to waste nature.
Commendations should go to the UltraLuxum CXL project team led by another icon, world-renowned watchmaker, Jean-François Ruchonnet, for coming up with simple idea that works.
Check out this giant trimaran in this edition’s Boat Profiles.
Also in the Profiles section are the Itama 50, which offers an original and ideal combination of a day-cruiser and an open yacht; and the 102’ RPH (Raised Pilot House) from Numarine, an impressive, beautifully designed and lovingly built high-performance superyacht.
This edition’s Destination features So Mauritius Bel Ombre, a radiant oasis that Sofitel has created on the southern coast of Mauritius Island.
Speaking of marinas, a section has been set to feature Port Tarraco in Spain, which with its deep-water basin and a recent restructuring of its berthing accommodation, looks ready to meet the challenges of the new boating world head-on.
Take it from Marc Colls, Port Tarraco’s general manager to know why and how.

Moran Marinas Ivy’s Wayne Shepherd, a well respected veteran of the marine industry, has been promoted to general manager, Marina Operations.
Mr. Shepherd has been Moran Marinas Ivy’s Regional Operations Manager for the past four years and will now take full responsibility of all marinas within the Dubai-based company’s portfolio.
With close to 35 years experience in Australia and the Middle East, 19 of which have been spent in marina management, Mr. Shep-herd brings a passion for the industry that has seen him work on all aspects of marinas, from implementing international standards facility and asset management, to working with sales on increasing occu-pancy, revenues, and ensuring effective control of financial results to meet operational objectives.
Michael Corrigan, CEO of Moran Marinas IGY, said Mr. Shepherd is “a world-class leader in our industry and has been a tremendous asset to our company since joining us in 2008.
“This promotion is recognition of his hard work and dedication over the years and I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to deliver the highest standards for our clients in the region and around the world.”
Mr. Shepherd has been a key player in driving the growth of one of the company’s flagship projects—Doha’s Lusail Marina—which has just marked its first year of operations.
Prior to joining Mourjan Marinas IGY, Mr. Shepherd was the opera-tions manager for d’Albora Marinas, Australia’s largest marina operat-ing company, supporting six marinas across the states of New South Wales and Victoria including the award winning Nelson Bay marina.
“I am looking forward to bringing my experiences in the industry to this role which is a tremendously exciting and challenging op-portunity as we move into the next phase of our development as a company,” said Mr Shepherd.
“We have achieved a great deal over the past few years and I’m confident there is much more to come.”

Doha’s Lusail Marina celebrates turning one in June by inviting guests to enjoy a one-month complimentary berthing at the stunning Mourjan Marinas IGY-managed facility in Lusail City.
The anniversary marked the end of a successful first year for Lusail Marina, which welcomed its first yacht in June 2011. Last March Mourjan Marinas IGY was awarded the “Excellence and Innovation” award for Lusail Marina at the World of Yachts and Boats Recognition Awards.
Renowned for its outstanding level of service and privacy, Lusail Marina invites visitors to experience the award-winning marina and join in the celebrations by taking advantage of a one-month complimentary berth-ing, valid through June 2012.
Wayne Shepherd, Regional Operations Manager of Mourjan Marinas IGY, said Lusail Marina has quickly established itself as an un-missable yachting destination in the Middle East.
“Our premier facility continues to impress guests who enjoy the in-timacy of the location and its unique design, which includes on water lounges and contemporary shade structures. We’re pleased to extend this special offer to our valued guests and visitors as Lusail Marina cel-ebrates its first anniversary,” he said.
Lusail Marina can accommodate 93 yachts between 10-40 metres in length. Designed within strict environmental guidelines, the marina has been built from the very best materials to meet the highest environmen-tal management standards. The marina uses aluminum marina systems built of non-corrosive recyclable materials, including marine-grade alumi-num alloy frames and composite wood decking.
In line with all Mourjan Marinas managed facilities, Lusail Marina cur-rently boasts a five-star concierge service, 24-hour security and marina cart service to and from your yacht. On-water lounges ensure your stay in the marina is as comfortable as possible.
Lusail Marina is located within the futuristic Lusail City development, one of the most ambitious real estate projects in Qatar and the wider Middle East.

UAE-based powerboat maker expands to Indian Ocean
Volvo Ocean Race gets record number of candidate cities
Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg hosts Hercules Windsurfing Cup 2012
Further taking the local brand worldwide, Al Marakeb—the UAE-based manufacturer of afford-able, high-performance recreational powerboats—has signed agreement with VDS Marine for the exclusive distribution of the company’s boats in Seychelles, and cover the Indian Ocean region.
The yachts charter business in Seychelles, which also operates in the brokerage of new and used boats in the region, VDS Marine will further strengthen Al Marakeb’s international presence that currently extends across UAE, Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the Comoros Islands and Maldives.
Nour Al Sayyed, Architect at Al Marakeb said their company’s focus for the year is to strengthen Al Marakeb’s position locally while expanding its distribution network abroad.
“Our powerboats generated a lot of interest at this year’s boat show in Dubai and VDS represents our biggest and most promising gain so far. Not only will this allow us to supersede our initially predicted sales turnover for this year, but also gar-ner more contracts in the future,” Al Sayyed said.
Al Sayyed also said that the signing of the deal “further validates that products manufactured in UAE can compete with international brands.
“We are proud that as a UAE-based company, overseas buyers are interested in our products and we were urged to consider the expansion of distribution to the rest of the neighbouring islands through the partnership.”
Al Marakeb’s success story began in 2007, where in a few short years it has become a global competitor for producing three standard models – SPARTAN 25, DINO 31 and TRITON 33 – each of which comes with flexible personalisation op-tions. This range caters to private and commercial buyers alike in regional and international markets.
Volvo Ocean Race S.L.U. has selected the successful candidates who will go through to the final stage of the bid process to become host cities for the 12th and 13th editions of the Volvo Ocean Race, scheduled for 2014-15 and 2017-18.
Of more than 60 applications received, a record number of 33 will progress through to the Candidate phase.
The bid process, managed by London-based sports agency, The Sports Consul-tancy and launched earlier this year, received over 60 Expressions of Interest.
The successful host cities will be an-nounced at the end of 2012 and the race route for the 12th and 13th editions of the race confirmed.
Commenting on the bid process, The Sports Consultancy Managing Director Angus Buchanan said: “We have been very impressed with the number, quality and geo-
graphic spread of bid applications received, which in turn has enabled us to select the best possible Candidates with whom we will progress discussions.
“The desire to host this spectacular event is stronger than ever which is testament not only to the appeal of the event to specta-tors but also a recognition of the significant economic benefits that the Volvo Ocean Race brings to its host cities.”
Knut Frostad, Chief Executive of Volvo Ocean Race, added: “When selecting a route for the Volvo Ocean Race it is im-portant that we consider a range of factors including sporting, commercial, heritage and legacy.
“This formal host city bid process allows us to choose the best possible route by identifying the strongest host city partner-ships that will benefit the race, its hosts and the event’s growing global audience.”
The Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg hosted 61 windsurfers, June 21 – 24, 2012 for the Hercules Windsurfing Cup. Ten races took place across six classes which included the DNK 5.0, DNK 6.8, SLALOM, National Class, Formula and Start-class.
Vladimir Liubomirov, Commodore of the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg, said, “We host a lot of sailing events for din-ghies, such as the Gazprom Optimist Cup and the Sails of White Nights ISAF match racing event, so it is encouraging to see us branch out to include and attract such a large number of windsurfers. It just goes
to show that the Yacht Club of Saint-Pe-tersburg is a versatile venue that is perfect for all types of watersports.”
Kirill Vonogov, Event Organiser, for his part said that the event had even more classes as the event grows in popularity. “It was great to see such a broad spec-trum of ages represented throughout the regatta.”
The Hercules Windsurfing Cup was organized by the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg and was supported by the Federation of Windsurfing and Kitesurfing, as well as the Russian Sailing Federation.

The final look of the new 50-footer has been achieved by combining extreme precision and creativity. A labour of love that has involved Marco Casali, the yacht
designer for Itama range, with AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology) and the Centro Stile del Gruppo Ferretti. Like the other boats in the new Itama line, the overall aim has been to develop certain aspects, while maintaining the immacu-late harmony that distinguishes all the craft in the Itama fleet.
The result is a modern 50-footer with a dis-tinctively sporting character, fitting perfectly between the Forty and the FiftyFive, and offering an original and ideal combination of a day-cruis-er and an open yacht. It can host up to 12 people and reach speeds of up to 34 knots thanks to its twin MAN 800 mhp engines.
The craft’s exterior also confirms the develop-ments that have been made in all the shipyard’s latest projects, including a higher bow and a lower stern that is smoothly, yet dynamically curved with all the tension of a bow about to
shoot an arrow. A sleek, clean-cut design and carefully bal-
anced deck space have been brought together in the Fifty with a new technological concept, in fact the new Fifty has been constructed using a lamination system for the infusion of the glass fibre components, which guarantees an improved weight-performance ratio.
Ideal balance What makes this craft particularly special,
however, is its capacity to offer an ideal balance between sporty sea performance and ultimate comfort. To achieve this, a classic Itama design has been restyled with specially designed solu-tions that guarantee ultimate cruising comfort and an even more luxurious onboard lifestyle.
Following this same approach the internal layout has also been completely redesigned with the VIP cabin returned to its classic Itama posi-tion in the stern. This sets the craft apart from the other models in the shipyard’s new fleet by presenting owners with original space optimiza-
This 50-footer offers an original and ideal combination of a day-cruiser and an open yacht.
15

tion solutions and distinctively refined fittings. These range from the particularly high ceilings in all three cabins to a layout that combines design logic and inventiveness, thanks to a painstakingly researched floor plan that marries ideally with the requirements of the craft’s shaft drive system.
AdvancedThe effect of expansion and the sense of free-
dom, already tried and tested on the FiftyFive, has been further developed in the Fifty. In addi-tion to the new and spacious dimensions of its stern area, the craft also boasts a roomy cockpit and a large aft deck that guarantees a very special, no-filter relationship with the sea in the classic tradition of the open yacht.
The spacious stern sundeck, specifically de-signed to exploit daytime livability to the full, leads onto the cockpit that features a typical
Itama layout with a classic control panel and a horseshoe-shaped sofa to the fore of the sun-deck. It is noticeable that the size of Itama Fifty cockpit is only slightly smaller if compared to bigger open yachts. The sofa is a particularly spe-cial as it can be transformed into a comfortable, forward-facing co-pilot’s seat.
The bimini fabric top with its electro-hydrau-lic, power-assisted drive mechanism allows the cockpit to be completely covered or opened in just a few minutes, so the exteriors can be adapted to any climate quickly and easily.
The extendable gangplank for disembarking from the craft is anchored to the aft deck and doubles as a crane for towing and launching the craft’s tender or a jetski.
Stylish Similarly, while maintaining the style of previ-
ous Itama models, the Fifty’s interiors also offer
16
16 Arabian Yachts
an excitingly innovative choice of materials and furnishings.
The internal layout consists of three cabins all with ensuite bathrooms and a dinette and galley. The Master and guest cabins are located in the bows and the VIP cabin in the stern.
On going below-decks you find the dinette in an extremely practical location on your left, with the galley neatly located on the right. The galley, which is subtly separated from the dinette by its wooden floor and the TV cabinet, is equipped with all the appliances needed to guarantee total comfort, including a fridge, oven and dishwasher.
Moving on from the living area towards the bows you come to the Master Cabin and Guest Cabin, which is fitted with twin beds. Both cabins have their own bathroom and separate shower cubicle. The VIP cabin is located in its classic po-sition in the stern and includes a direct stairway to the cockpit. In this way, larger space and more livability have been guaranteed, no mentioning privacy and comfort, sensibly enhanced. In fact,
the owner’s guests can count on a more secluded area, deeply living the sea with no filters, the feeling indissolubly tied to Itama.
SplendidThe splendid materials selected for the in-
teriors also emphasize the refined attention to detail and contemporary trends that contribute to making the Fifty an icon of modern “lifestyle” design. A special mention deserves the white painted oak, a wood, able to give to Itama Fifty the style easily recognizable on the architectures and the colors of Mediterranean islands. Wood has also been used for most of the furnishings, including the floors in the bathrooms and gal-ley, whereas in the cabins a selection of precious leather fittings, including the bed head and sur-round marry perfectly with the choice of carpets.
From the previews that have so far been re-leased, it is clear that this yacht succeeds in unit-ing exuberance and luxury, a powerful spirit and improved liveability in every detail.

Numarine comes up with a boat as agile as it is fast
Designed for going places and being there in style
From the Numarine fleet comes the 102’ RPH—an impressive, beautifully designed and lovingly built high-performance su-peryacht.
The boat, serious contender from Turkey, fea-tures custom designer interior to your specifica-tions, economic 1825hp CAT diesels and extraor-dinary speed of up to 28 knots with cruising at 22 knots comfortably and a 500-nm range.
The 102’ RPH (Raised Pilot House) has mean, shark-like features and interflowing lines that add a third dimension to the hull which gives it a truly unique and dynamic style. The sharp outline of the yacht creates a feeling of speed while large glass surfaces result in an uninterrupted relation-ship with the sea.
Among a host of options include a four seakeeper gyro stabilizers that offer an incredible smooth ride in various sea conditions. Those in the know say speed, economy, seakeeping set this yacht apart.
Indeed, for the 102’ RPH is as agile as it is fast. It is a joy to navigate in any sea condition, pro-

viding comfortable cruising for all on board. The boat has been designed for going places as much as being there in style
Designed by Tommaso Spadolini and Can Yalman, the boat likewise has foam cores, vi-nylester resins and vacuum-infusion methods are also used in its construction. Customisable, the stock 31.08-metre superyacht has a split-level owner’s suite on the main deck and an unusual four-cabin layout down below, con-sisting of two double suites to port and two twins to starboard. There are also three crew cabins with our berths in the stern, accessed from the cockpit. Apart from the dramatic profile, and eye-catching expanses of glass in the superstructure and topsides to guarantee the maximum amount of daylight to all ac-commodation areas the 102 boasts of an intriguing circular saloon main deck.
Jean-François Ruchonnet, an icon in the world of watch-making, in coming up with the idea said: “To travel is not enough.
“Throughout history, man has endeav-oured to combine style and technology to travel from A to B, quickly and in comfort. I set myself the challenge to push the boundaries even fur-ther in every aspect and now you can travel to the future with me in the UltraLuxum CXL.”
Unveiled on Sept. 23, 2011, during the Mo-naco Yacht Show, the UltraLuxum CXL (Carbon Xtra Lite) project by the MonacoYacht Club is the most extreme fusion of architecture, design, comfort, performance, economy and technology ever created in a luxury sailing yacht. The trima-ran’s construction is estimated to cost 42 million euros (US$52.25 million).
‘Palace on the sea’ Jean-Jacques Coste, a naval architect and
among those behind the project, expressed inter-est in creating a similar giant trimaran he de-scribed as a “palace on the sea” for UAE clients.
“I would be very happy to adapt the concept
of giant catamaran to the living style of the UAE and I am convinced that it could allow us to cre-ate an exceptional yacht,” Coste, responsible for the creation of the most beautiful catamarans navigating our seas to date, said.
“The volume and space of big catamarans adapted to the comfort and performance of long displacement hulls will offer an outstanding palace on the sea which can fit with the require-ments of some fine individuals,” he added.
Coste also created the Singapore Airline Airbus A-380 first class cabin.
FirstThe UltraLuxum CXL challenges the forces
of nature and the rules of engineering to race across the ocean without using a drop of oil and can cruise the most exclusive harbours powered only by renewable energy.
It is the first sailing trimaran of this size ever to be built with folding hull beams. In open water, she is 23 metres across, but in harbour configuration the outer hull beams fold in to a slender 11metres.

In just a few minutes almost any mooring becomes accessible but when you’re back on the ocean with the hulls extended you will enjoy the benefits of a stable platform without the heeling of a monohull.
The CXL is a three-deck sloop-rigged trimaran writing new rules of yacht design and comfort.
All of the features you would expect to find in a motor yacht come as standard but with the performance and sensation of a fast sailing yacht. She is capable of achieving exceptional speeds under power as well as high speed, long range cruising.
ComfortWith comfort in mind, her stability is such
that at anchor there is little rolling, and when underway, heeling has been kept to a minimum even in rough conditions because of the design of the trimaran’s long narrow hulls.
The low draft allows anchoring and cruising close to the shore and in shallow waters.
The trimaran is 48 metres long with a de-ployed beam of 23 metres (stowed beam of 11 metres), a height of 60 metres at the top of the mast and has an overall weight of 150 tons.
GreenThe CXL has been designed to be built and sail
in harmony with nature and all of the energy used on board comes from renewable sources. The trimaran harnesses the latest Battery Man-agement System (BMS) technology using state-of-the-art lithium/ion batteries.
Additional power is available from the op-tional hybrid propulsion system and ensures that the CXL is a flagship for low emissions in the industry.
Each yacht will also be built in accordance with the requirements of “Wood Forever” sus-tainability foundation under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.
Design The UltraLuxum CXL concept was developed
using the latest naval architectural research in-cluding tank testing and computer simulations. Extensive development at
the cutting edge of hull design has shaped the form of the CXL and enables it to achieve such remarkable performance and sea worthiness.
The yacht’s structural calculations have been conducted using finite element analysis to op-timise weight/strength, maintaining the highest level of integral and at-sea safety.
The UltraLuxum team have brought together the latest thinking and expertise in design and testing simulation technology so that each ves-sel is mapped out and shares the same founda-tion but can then be personalised to reveal how the completed yacht will look according to the owner’s wishes
The CXL is constructed with high tech com-posite materials for their light weight and

strength. The construction process combines epoxy resin, carbon fibre and a polyurethane foam core. The folding carbon fibre hulls bond to the main hull with the two symmetrical external hulls in a single piece arrangement.
All structural elements (bulkheads, frames, roof and floors) are integrated with the interior.
During construction, the vessel’s weight is constantly monitored and checked against the plan. Every single structural component is ap-proved by laboratory testing. The yacht is built inside a temperature controlled construction hall, in accordance with the strict Bureau Veritas (BV) quality control standard.
Weight, quality of finish, density, resistance to aging and ease of maintenance are all determin-ing factors in the choice of materials and con-struction methods.
ExteriorThe stunning exterior is the result of hydro
and aerodynamic research to meet the demand-ing requirements of speed, performance, com-fort, ergonomics, interior layout and safety.
The exterior aft salon provides shaded loung-ing with unobstructed panoramic views and is separated from the large interior salon by a slid-ing door. The aft stairs in the hull lead to Laza-rette compartments and down to the transom where the scuba diving equipment and other water sports equipment is stored.
Access to the water is via a swim ladder, while that to the fly bridge from the aft deck is via a comfortable stairway. The two helm stations and rigging equipment are located to port and star-board for ultimate control and ease of handling.
The vast sunbathing area is located around the Jacuzzi, while amidships there is a dining area with a huge sofa where guests can dine with the most extraordinary view. All anchoring and run-ning rigging has been integrated into the deck’s layout.
InteriorThe bright contemporary interior created by
Coste Design & Partners and Ultraluxum’s Jessica Sbaraglia matches the cutting-edge philosophy of the yacht.
The CXL interior accommodation and décor are designed and built to the highest standards of comfort and luxury using lightweight materials and state-of-the-art craftsmanship. The yacht is equipped with the latest automated controls and high-end entertainment systems including flat screen TV, audio and video on demand and high speed internet access.
Interior accommodation includes a master cabin plus en-suite bathroom, a lounge area four guest cabins with bathroom, a dining area, three crew cabins with bathroom, a galley a spa (op-tional, with 3 guest cabins), a navigation station, two optional cabins, including bathrooms, within each side hull during anchoring and harbour configuration.
The layout is designed to make the boat usable for either commercial or private yacht use.
The UltraLuxum CXL will be constructed in a highly qualified shipyard that specializes in com-posite materials.

The second edition of the Rolex Volcano Race concluded in true Caprese style as fifteen international crews toasted a week’s enthralling sailing during the Rolex
party and prize giving at La Canzone del Mare last May.
The crew of Sir Peter Ogden’s Mini Maxi Jethou (GBR) received the most coveted prize – the Rolex Trophy and timepiece – awarded to the overall winner of Leg Two of the 400-nautical mile offshore race which started and finished in Capri and comprised a pulsating journey through the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The fastest boat on the water over Leg Two – Filip Balcaen’s 112-foot Supermaxi Nilaya – was awarded a Rolex timepiece after claiming line honours in a time of one day, two hours and five minutes. The two celebrating crews have much in common: both were formed by an enthusiastic owner and a group of friends who have sailed together for a number of years, comprising mainly amateurs in addition to handpicked and highly-skilled professional sailors. Their respec-tive paths to victory are the result of hard work and perseverance.
Jethou dominates Ogden’s 60-ft Jethou has frequently been the bridesmaid at Rolex yacht-ing events, missing out on the prizes with luck deserting her at key junctures, from crew mem-bers falling overboard to split-second defeats. It seems this team of predominantly Corinthian sailors may have finally found the winning for-mula. Ogden commissioned an upgrade to his Mini Maxi over the winter, drawing on the ad-vice of professional tactician Brad Butterworth. Jethou is now more powerful following a slight lengthening and the development of a new mast and sail plan. While the yacht’s enhanced prow-ess has rendered her faster and more responsive in light airs, the crew’s obvious bond and unity is an equally key component in this long overdue success.
The sailing was a riveting affair. Jethou
reached consistent speeds of 26 knots around the Aeolian Islands, the crew knee deep in water as the Mini Maxi flew past these ancient geological wonders almost like an airplane. At one stage, incredibly, she was ahead of two titans in Nilaya and Claus-Peter Offen’s 100-ft Wally Y3K (GER). Eventually, on the home stretch and as the wind speed picked up, these two larger yachts gained a

narrow advantage over Jethou by virtue of their superior waterline length. However, Ogden’s Mini Maxi finished an impressive 41 minutes behind the first boat home, enough to help her triumph on handicap, marking an impressive week which saw the crew claim the windward/leeward race in Gaeta and second place overall in Leg One of the offshore race, which ran 100-nm from Gaeta to Capri. In the combined scoring for the three events of the week, Jethou also came out on top. An emphatic winner. For Ogden victory crowned a memorable event, which he concluded by celebrating his 65th birthday: “It is not a profes-sional crew. I sail for sixty days a year, and they can’t all commit to this, so we have a roster and rotate, although they’ve all been with me a long time.” According to Broughton, who steps down as navigator for the forthcoming Giraglia Rolex Cup: “They are a great bunch to sail with, there’s lots of banter and they’re very happy as we’ve now won our last two races.” With her recent success, Jethou has thrown down the gauntlet to her Maxi rivals ahead of a competitive summer. Porttarraco
Ready for the big ones
‘The Mediterranean has the highest concentration of marinas in the world, but they don’t all have the capacity to accommodate larger yachts. Our new layout and support systems at Port Tarraco have been specifically structured to meet these requirements.’ –Marc Colls, General Manager
With a shortage of available megay-acht berths across the Mediter-ranean region, and an expected increase in demand due to the grow-
ing numbers of larger yachts being ordered, Port Tarraco, which has recently undergone restructur-ing of its berthing accommodation, combined with its unrivalled deep-water basin, makes it the perfect docking destination for owners and crew of yachts from 30 to 80 metres LOA.
Marc Colls, General Manager of Port Tarraco says: “The superyacht industry has shown a sig-nificant recovery over the last 12 months. The number of superyachts delivered and afloat has increased, there are many new projects under construction, and the average length of new yachts is rising significantly. The superyacht service sector needs to prepare for this - that means being able to accommodate larger yachts of various sizes at any one time and provid-
ing the necessary facilities. “The Mediterranean has the highest concentration of marinas in the world, but they don’t all have the capacity to accommodate larger yachts. Our new layout and support systems at Port Tarraco have been spe-cifically structured to meet these requirements and the marina can now provide secure berth-ing for a variety of superyachts sizes, up to 160 metres - that’s almost any yacht in the world. Our deep-water basin is an additional benefit and clearly differentiates us from other marinas in the Mediterranean. Our aim is to position Port Tar-raco as one of ‘the superyacht destinations’ in the Mediterranean.”
Hidden gemPort Tarraco is a hidden gem in the Mediter-
ranean, located on the doorstep of the beautiful and historic city of Tarragona, on Spain’s “Golden Coast.” From a chance to explore the rich local

Catalonian culture, to the area’s many beaches, mountains for hiking or skiing, and the nearby cities of Barcelona and Madrid, the area is an attractive year-round destination for superyacht owners, captains and crew.
Two thousand years of history have designated Tarragona a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO. Tarragona boasts world-class ruins poised on hills overlooking the blue-green waters of the Mediterranean. It is one of few places that can boast such a large number of monuments in such a small area. Once through the walls into the old town, visitors can follow the traces of Rome in Catalonia and lose themselves in the Ro-man ruins. The city has also been selected to host the 2017 Mediterranean Games.

through its subsidiary Qatari Diar Marina Tar-ragona (QDMT). The purchase was made from vendor International Marina Tarragona S.L., a Spanish marina operator. QDMT is a joint venture between QATARI DIAR and Marina Barcelona 92 (MB’92), a Barcelona-based operator of marinas, with 95% representation by QATARI DIAR and five percent by MB’92. Port Tarraco is now operated by MB’92. Under its new ownership, Port Tarraco will benefit from a fresh injection of luxury ma-
rina management, from the combined efforts of MB’92, and Mourjan Marinas IGY, who has been commissioned to market the world-class marina internationally. MB’92 will implement and over-see the commitment to setting new standards in customer service and world-class facilities at Port Tarraco. Its marina services will be tailor-made to fit the specific needs of yacht captains and crew, encompassing the latest technology and high security levels expected by visiting VIP vessels, in
combination with MB’92’s signature concierge service, which will ensure each yacht and crew receives a warm welcome and any personal as-sistance they might need throughout their stay. Additionally, from the nearby MB’92 shipyard facilities and ship repair-services, Port Tarraco is able to offer a full range of superyacht repair, refit and maintenance services, which can be car-ried out in the marina or at the shipyard (just 46 nautical miles from Port Tarraco).

The thinnest A. Lange & Söhne watch is now also available in white gold, and would make a perfect gift for Father’s Day which is being celebrated on June 17th this year. The Saxonia Thin was first introduced in 2011, in a pink gold version, and is the slimmest watch ever crafted by the Saxon manufactory. It is the epitome of distinguished elegance paired with contemporary stateliness.
Measuring a mere 5.9 millimetres in height and with a case diameter of 40 millimetres, this timepiece has a stately and harmonious pres-ence on the wrist whilst remaining focused on the essence of time: it displays the time in hours and minutes, nothing more. The Saxonia Thin is impressive not only because of its graceful pro-portions but also by virtue of its intrinsic values. A. Lange & Söhne specially crafted the move-ment to achieve such a slender silhouette; it has a height of 2.9 millimetres, and when fully wound, the watch runs for 72 hours, an incredible feat for such a delicate calibre.
A. Lange & Söhne’s Saxonia Thin in white gold
For the first time, the Saxon watch brand A. Lange & Söhne sponsored the Concor so d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a worldwide beauty contest for classic automobiles, that took place May 25 – 27, 2012 in Cernobbio on the shores of Lake Como. The Concorso d’Eleganza is considered to be the most tradi-tional and elegant competition of its kind.
Founded in 1929, the event has evolved since its revival in the 1990s to become the most important event for connoisseurs of high-quality historic cars. Besides the classics, prototypes of new vehicles are also awarded prizes, with a particular focus on design and
elegance. The historical significance of the vehicles also plays a major role in the evalua-tion process. Bordering Lake Como, the Villa d’Este luxury hotel is the exclusive setting for the event. The winner of the “Best of Show” category – the most important prize of the contest – was presented with a one-of-a-kind cuvette edition of the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE. The dust cover of the hunter-cased watch has been adorned with an engraving designed spe-cially for the occasion. The Central European Time (CET) zone is represented by the town of Como on the city ring around this time-zone watch.

Roger Dubuis has been at the forefront of the contemporary fine watchmaking scene since 1995. Its audacious creations, firmly anchored in the 21st century, bear the mark of all the savoir-faire and expertise of the finest watchmaking mechanisms. They will give the inspiration to embark upon this New Year of 2012.
Roger Dubuis immerses itself in the atmosphere of each of these worlds to create exceptional watch models. The Monégasque Collection refers to the boldness and wit of the world of the Player. The Excalibur Collection is influenced by the strength, brilliance and discipline of the world of the War-rior. The limitations of ordinary life have no place in the world of the Venturer, or in the Pulsion watch models that evoke it. Finally, the world of the Diva is impregnated with elegance and beauty, just like the Velvet Collection that has been inspired by it.

the OmeGa Speedmaster “First Omega in Space” Numbered Edition chronograph
So much has been written about the rigorous testing that led to the OMEGA Speedmaster’s being the only watch qual-ified for every manned NASA mission that it is easy to forget that the very first OMEGA worn in Space was the Speed-master that astronaut Wally Schirra wore during his Mercury Atlas 8 mission in October of 1962. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Speedmaster to orbit the earth, OMEGA has created the Speedmaster “First Omega in Space” in honour of Wally Schirra and his historic wristwatch.
The OMEGA Speedmaster “First Omega in Space” edition recalls the watch that Schirra bought at a jeweller in Houston more than half a century ago. Inside its 39.70 mm polished, brushed stainless steel case is the legendary self-winding calibre 1861, which earned its reputation as the movement in the legendary OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch. There is a black aluminium bezel ring with a tachymetric scale.
Visible through its box-form, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is the classic varnished black dial that for 55 years has made the Speedmaster the world’s definitive chronograph: the 30-minute and 12-hour counters are located at 3 o’clock and 6 o’clock respectively and the small seconds sub-dial is at 9 o’clock. It has white transferred indexes; the hour markers and hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova.
The watch has a screw-in stainless steel caseback which is embossed with OMEGA’s original seahorse emblem, the words “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962”, the date of the Mercury Atlas 8 mission. The Speed-master “First Omega in Space” is a numbered edition and its number is engraved on the caseback.
The OMEGA Speedmaster “First Omega in Space” chron-ograph is presented on a brown leather strap with beige stitching. The watch is water resistant to 5 bar / 50 metres/ 167 feet. This classic Speedmaster is a fitting way to celebrate the beginning of an adventure that would ultimately lead to six lunar landings and half a century of space exploration.
Vacheron Constantin shares with artistic crafts its profound faith in the richness of human nature and in its creative impetus.
A human adventure, an invitation to discover another dimension where know-how and
innovation meet: the “Métiers d’Art La Symbolique des Laques” collection tells the tale of a meeting between the artists from one of the oldest Japanese lacquer houses, Zôhiko, located in Kyoto since it was founded in 1661, and the world’s oldest watch manufac-turer having maintained uninterrupted production since 1755.
Acknowledged experts in the art of “maki-e”, the artisans of the House of Zôhiko perpetuate a tradition of artis-tic continuity and constantly renewed creativity. The most sophisticated tech-nique in the art of lacquer, “maki-e” literally means “sprinkled picture” – or gold or silver dust delicately sprin-kled on still moist lacquer
which is usually black, to create the motif.
Lacquer comes from the bark of the Rhus Verniciflua tree that originates from the highlands of central Asia and Tibet, which today only grows in southern China, Vietnam and Japan. “Maki-e”, which appears very early on in Japanese history, reached its artistic heights between the 8th and 12th centuries, becoming the main decora-tion form from the 17th century on-wards, which it indeed still is today.
Because it understands the mean-ing of time, the Manufacture Vach-eron Constantin respects the natural rhythm of exceptional creations. True to the spirit of the Métiers d’Art col-lection, the “Métiers d’Art La Sym-bolique des Laques” series has been extended over three years, each year producing a new set of three watches issued in 20-piece limited editions.

Apparently buoyed by the success of the Volkswagen Race Touareg TDI at the 2009 Dakar Rally, the German automobile manufacturer, which made history winning at the race event in the diesel-powered class, has come up with a street-legal version following much craving from the big boys wanting new toys. And so was born Magic Morning.
With a starting price of US$2 million—compa-ny stock—Karsten Jankowski, Volkswagen Middle East marketing director, told Car Xpress back at the Doha motor show that a very limited edition of Magic Morning will be made, around 20 units, he said.
“Magic Morning is custom-made. It was based on the Touareg that went to the Dakar Rally,” Jankowski said. “It costs around 1.5 million euros
for just the basics.”Magic Morning is a slightly tamer version of the
Race Touareg; the 228 kW/310 PS Volkswagen could very well be the world’s most talented street-legal SUV. The Touareg
Magic Morning, safe to say, was built to with-stand the toughest rally race in the world.
The version that is legally approved for use on public roadways can sprint to 100 km/h in less than six seconds. The body, which is just about two metres wide, was slightly
modified for road use. Instead of 16-inch wheels, new 18-inch wheels
from BBS with a gold look are used here. The Race Touareg signature—also in a golden colour—covers the entire length of the vehicle’s sides.
