The Art and Creative Technology programme started being offered at UBD in 2009 with the aim to equip students with technical skills , critical thinking and enhance their creative talent to serve the creative workforce in Brunei Darussalam. Technology is intensively associated with visual communication, demanding for human capital to develop creative solutions for problems and challenges in health, environment, cultural identity and well-being.

Over the last seven years, UBD students majoring in Art and Creative Technology have been presenting their creative projects in the Spectacle Art and Design Graduation Exhibition.

This year , 33 students present their views on the preservation of Bruneian cultural identity and language, the influence of technology in modern societies, solutions for health problems, environmental awareness as well as aesthetic approaches to conceptual ideas . In a time of constant challenges , demanding us to constantly look forward and beyond we can only envision a bright future for professionals in the Design and Creative Industry.

Spectacle Beyond 2019 is the seventh annual Art and Creative Technology (ACT) graduation exhibition held at the Art Gallery Chancellor Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam. I have been involved indirectly and directly with all seven Spectacle exhibitions. These exhibitions have projected a brand associated with new emerging visual artists and designers, and a vehicle for the showcase of creativity, innovation and enterprise. The event is anticipated yearly by the prospect and past students, stakeholders in creative industries and those looking for extraordinary talents.

The Spectacle exhibitions are more than about artworks, creative products, contemporary concepts, wondrous aesthetics and styles as they also represent a journey that built common talents into industry-ready individuals.

They are the platforms and forums that simulate real-working scenarios to help further facilitate the development of students’ management skills and their soft-skills. The exhibitions were and still managed by the students and these experiences are as important as the academic, technical and hard -skills they learned throughout their four years in UBD.

ISMANDI TIMBANG

DIRECTOR

First of all, Praise to Allah, the One who gives such power, knowledge and ability to accomplish our goals. Without it, we would not be able to do this catalogue.

I am grateful to our Lecturers Dr. Rui Oliveira Lopes and Hj Osman Hj Mohammad for their guidance and assistance. I respect and thank Ms. Ayling and her Design committee, Ms. Zubaidah and her Publication & Editorial committee, Mr. Afnan and his Production committee for completing this catalogue on time.

Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to all Beyond Spectacle 2019 committees for their contribution and support to complete this catalogue. May Allah bless everyone who had directly or indirectly helped us to achieve our goals.

AIMI HB

CO-DIRECTOR

Syukur Alhamdulillah, I am delighted to have the chance to write as the Co-director of Beyond Spectacle 2019 and it is my sincerest pleasure to welcome you to our Art and Design Exhibition.

In this catalogue, you will get to see 33 brilliant hard(art)work displayed during the exhibition that took two semesters to have all these prepared and done. And so, I would like to thank those who were involved in making this exhibition a success. This project has taught me a lot and helped me grow as an artist and a leader.

This exhibition has shown so much potential in developing us artists further, not only local artists but also as visual communicators of Brunei. And I hope to see in the near future that we as artists of Brunei, would go beyond our comfort zones after we graduate.

UBD SPECTACLE HISTORY

In 2013, approximately 5,000 people visited the 1st Spectacle Art & Design Exhibition. The success of this event provided invaluable opportunities for the Bachelor of Art graduates to positively contribute to the wider community & make a difference.

Today, as in the past, the merit of this ambitious large-scale art and design exhibition offers invaluable opportunities and experiences to the Bachelor of Art graduates majoring in UBD’s Art and Creative Technology (ACT) programme to contribute their creative talents to Brunei’s creative industries. This year marks the fourth graduation exhibition to be organized by the ACT programme of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Brunei Darussalam. This year’s cohort of 33 final year students will exhibit their innovative art and design capstone projects at the Chancellor Hall Art Gallery this April.

Spectacle exhibitions have proved how contemporary art and design can be a valuable component for connecting together the young generation’s concerns through powerful visual expressions. Also, as part of their personal artistic expression, the students have diversified their work to include objects, both decorative and practical that can be marketed to the public as part of Brunei’s growing creative industries. Beyond Spectacle 2019: Art and Design Graduation Show continues the tradition of offering an exhibition of the highest calibre.

The exhibitions are designed to not only showcase the artistic talents of ACT majors, but also to share with the audience the students’ visions for a wider acceptance of aesthetics and respect for culture, life, and the environment. Their capstone projects prove that dreams are already turning to reality, making our society better and our future brighter. Contemporary art and design play a significant role in shaping our perceptions about the life of people around the world. UBD’s GenNext 1.0 ACT programme with its interdisciplinary curriculum in art, design, and communication is balanced to foster diverse creative students who will become the driving force behind Brunei’s future creative industries.

A short history of Spectacle Graduate Exhibitions: There were 21 students exhibiting in Spectacle 2013, 27 students exhibiting in Spectacle 2014, 54 students exhibiting in Spectacle 2015, 40 students exhibiting in Spectacle 2016, 54 students exhibiting in Impact 2017 - A Greater Spectacle, 70 students exhibiting in Spectacle 2018 - Eminent Art and 33 students exhibiting in Beyond Spectacle 2019.

ART & CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY

The art programme in the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was firstly introduced in 2001 at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) as an art education programme which was especially designed for primary school in-service teachers under the Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.). Due to a great demand of professionals to teach art subject in schools across the country, it was then offered to the pre-service students in 2003. The programme offered a range of modules that equipped the students with pedagogical knowledge, art theories and practice.

In 2009, SHBIE became a graduate faculty where the focus is mostly concentrated on teaching, education, counseling and lifelong learning. As a result, the art programme was redesigned and offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) as a BA in Art and Creative Technology (ACT). Following to the emerging developments on the cultural and creative industries in Brunei, the programme was tailored to provide the students conceptual and aesthetic foundations about creativity along with technical skills in art, design and creative technology. The structure of the programme were heavily based on fine arts, crafts, design, multimedia, animation and foundations of art theories. ACT has been continuously offered for 10 years and a total of 303 students have graduated.

Responding to the rapid growth of the cultural and creative industries and the University’s research and teaching strategy towards innovation and enterprise, UBD decided to redesign the art programme. Launched in August 2017, the new BA in Design and Creative Industries (DCI) is a combined major offers a wide range of interdisciplinary disciplines in the areas of art, design and media, innovation and technology, and business and management. DCI is a combined major offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in collaboration with the School of Business and Economics (SBE), the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) and the Faculty of Science(FOS).

Over the years, UBD has been continuously supporting and facilitating students to further their studies in innovation and technology associated with creativity, contributing to the development of human capital capable of serving in a wide range of professional areas and economic sectors within and beyond the cultural and creative industries.

BEYOND SPECTACLE 2019Beyond is about going over the boundary to explore the new horizon in the creative industry. There are many challenges and obstacles to overcome, but as a group, we are going to undertake this exploration together.

Beyond is a Journey. “Beyond” symbolizes the opening of a different door for a new creative adventure and closes the door of the previous Art programme, and thus, it is actually a parting journey. Hence, the exhibition is also a farewell celebration for the Art & Creative Technology (ACT) Programme (2010-2019). Now, we are exploring future opportunities with the new beginning of another new art programme, “Design & Creative Industries (DCI),” which was introduced in 2017. Henceforth, the theme ‘Beyond.’

The Beyond Spectacle 2019 Exhibition is where students of Art & Creative Technology showcase their artistic skills and their artworks throughout their one-year project. This marks their final year at Universiti Brunei Darussalam out of the 4-years of the academic programme. In this exhibition, the students have the opportunity to meet potential employers and companies.

Beyond Spectacle 2019: Art & Design Graduation Exhibition is the final exhibition for these students of the Art & Creative Technology Programme. The first Spectacle exhibition was introduced in 2013 and, until today, it had been successful and very popular to the public. We are expecting to achieve the same display quality and come with a better result for this year’s 2019 Exhibition.

CURATING TEAM’S NOTES

The last Spectacle is named as Beyond to celebrate the completion of the exhibiting students’ four years long-refining their artistic skills as well as a good foundation in Art and Design. They have successfully overcome this final challenge and made this exhibition possible. (It applies to everyone that it is important to constantly move forward and beyond whenever life changes to another stage inevitably).

In relation to the concept of Beyond, this exhibition is a collection of artworks that express concerns, experiences, events and thoughts that came across the artists. The theme ranges from memories, current issues of cultural identity, society, environment and health to spirituality. The narration flows in this order:from old times - childhood - questions about cultural identity - society unity / senses / empathy - youth is important for the future to preserve identity - personal experiences in the middle stage (heartbreak, confusion in life, experience loss) - last stage (religious, opportunity, hope, inner peace). It is hoped that the visitors are able to interact and reflect on (or relate to) the concepts presented as well as realize and gain a better understanding of some topics that we did not pay attention to before, such as autism.

PERSPEKTIF SEBAYAINSTALLATION

Perspektif Sebaya is about the perspective of youth and their role-identity in the country’s innovation, as their contribution, itself is an essential tool in weaving the future. I believe that the youth has so much potential to develop beyond their boundary. Therefore, I created this installation project as a subtle message for the youth.

The main medium used in this installation is ‘weaving’ (anyaman) at which it represents weaving the future while every string represents significant progress in our lives. The hand sculpture represents every single youth that is weaving their future whereas the circular light represents the future. Perspektif Sebaya is an open interpretation project inspired by my initial aim of taking art as my major.

I wanted to fully utilise art as a tool to visually communicate to our people, to inspire them and hope to be able to talk about various issues in Brunei.

As a visual artist, Aimi always explores and evolve her art palate. she grew from fine arts to digital art and installation.

Her invaluable experience working with Kaleidoscope Studio and Progresif, and even exhibit her works with them had helped her understand more about where Brunei stands in the current creative industry.

Currently, her studies in the art major, as well as freelancing, have honed her to talent as a visual artist. She hoped that her art will engage and inspire the younger youth to be more creative and innovative.

PRIDE & DIGNITYGRAPHIC DESIGN & SCULPTURE

The Malay scripted Arabic alphabet, Jawi, used to be one of the most common forms of writing in the past, but its use in modern society is decreasing as time moves on. I believe that through the visualization of nostalgia in my artwork, people would become sentimental for Jawi and hence, inspiring them to acknowledge its needed preservation and to appreciate and re-embrace its existence even though we live in a modern world.

To visualize my concept, I am doing a mixture of graphic design and sculpture representing my own style of writing Jawi to create a piece of contemporary art, namely in the form of adding Jawi into things that most people are familiar with such as signage and graphics while at the same time maintaining its dignity.

Amal Ummi likes to learn and appreciate the things around her, taking them all in and giving them some thoughts because everything around us is Art. While doing so, throughout her studies in UBD as an Art and Creative Technology major, she has sharpened her critical analytical ability and skill in improvising according to a current situation.

She has a passion for Graphic Design, where she can put her abstract thoughts and analytical skill into an art form. She would like to preserve art, such as the Jawi authenticity through visualization in this contemporary world.

ANEMONEDIGITAL PAINTING

Some of the most popular digital illustrations today tend to include artists who like to put pieces of themselves into their artwork - This is what I aim to achieve for my visual illustrations.Inspired by an artist known as WLOP who is known for creating digital illustrations that give off a very strong impression because of the emphasized details, hidden, untold stories and choice of colours on his piece, the five conceptual and narrative illustrations I created touches on these three prime aspects.

Through my point of view, I was able to visualize some of my major life experiences and illustrate them visually and have turned each and every one of them into pieces that are set in different settings and universes. By using this method, the audience is free to create their very own interpretations while trying to unravel the hidden stories behind each piece.

What started off as a hobby has now changed into a life passion. Amal expresses herself through all forms of art as a way to get an escape from reality. She also uses art as a form of medium for her to connect better with her friends, family and ultimately, everyone. Her ability to transform expression into passion has improved over time as she continues to experiment through visual illustration, sculpture, writing and photography. Now, she is inspired to tell stories through her perspective through any and all forms of art.

WILL KAMPONG AYER BE A RELIC?SCULPTURE & INSTALLATION

One of the distinctive ways of achieving a visual statement on the future and possible ruins of Kampong Ayer, showing its isolation is by creating a 3D sculpture. My artwork expresses the risk of abandonment: a vision of Kampong Ayer when it is not properly cared for, and have become remains, as many migrated to land as the country focuses mainly on modernization.

In this piece, concrete is used to represent tombstones, acting as something that will be far and long gone, if it is not saved. This will also be aided with a textual description on its surface, which includes Braille. Isolation is portrayed as only one model of a stilt house is left standing in the middle. Scattered pieces or remains on the soil underneath the Kampong Ayer is presented through the resin, with an illusion of clear blue water showing what used to occupy the village, itself.

Arifah is a sculptor and graphic designer. She originally began painting using palette knives and is now diving into another field of technique that suits her skills better.

She started painting abstracts with portraiture during her sixth form, and further developed this skill which now has her very own original abstract and natural style.

Arifah conveys her state of mind into her art pieces, making them obvious through her choice in colour schemes.

MUN PAHAM BISAIGRAPHIC DESIGN

AMERA QAIRUNNISA

@merbeann

With aspirations of becoming a graphic artist, Amera has been involved in this field since the year 2012 with humble beginnings as a hobby during her blogging days of making graphic posters about her interests. From then on, she branched out to graphic design and even worked for a few companies in order to gain valuable working experience. She also did some freelance work on the same field. Throughout the years, she has mostly worked on marketing collateral, print designs and logo designs alongside her graphic artworks.

My work entitled ‘Mun Paham Bisai,’ elaborates the manner of which cultural identity defines a country, highlighting its importance. However, due to modernization and globalization, this characteristic is slowly fading amongst the youth. My work seizes to remind in a series of five pop-art inspired graphic posters based on Bruneian identity, which are the candas, Jawi, canned nasi katok, the seven tribe languages and Tenunan pattern. The purpose is to help preserve, spread and raise awareness to the Bruneian youths of our fading identity.

Through this project, I would want the audience to further embrace, take pride in, and appreciate the beauty of our identity, especially in this era of globalization where cultural characteristics are disappearing.

THE UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIESPAINTING & INSTALLATION

My artwork is a portrait painting of my grandmother about the stories of her life hidden behind a congkak - her favourite traditional game. The main focus I want to emphasize is the wrinkles, where each and every one of them represents a timeline and a journey. Her facial expression also plays an important part in telling her experiences in life as she used the congkak to spend time with her peers and relatives, strengthening friendships, meeting new people and most importantly, helped her promote her commercial business.

The portrait painting is done in an abstract and contemporary mixed media style, and the congkak sculpture is made using coconut shell, wood and bamboo which is then placed on the same level as the painting to have my audience feel what my grandmother felt as she played the game – to better appreciate the existence of congkak in a modern society.

Painting has always been one of Emeliyana’s hobbies, but portrait painting is her main forté. Her enthusiasm began since her research on realistic paintings and contemporary painting styles in Brunei while comparing them with those from other countries. Most of her artworks are done in an abstract style, combined with multiple approaches of both traditional and digital techniques. For her, painting is a way to express her feelings, and she wishes to go beyond her comfort zone to explore new things by experimenting with different techniques - All to better understand how to create fascinating artworks in the future.

VAGARIES OF LOSS3D ANIMATION

HAQQ KHALID

@freshcucumberslices

Haqq Khalid is an Art and Creative Technology student at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Before that, however, his art background is non-existent, making his foray into art a difficult one. Though he has a desire for creativity, he was steered towards the logical sciences instead.

Due to this background, the traditional art mediums do not interest him; he does believe that 3-Dimensional modelling and animation is the future, full of limitless potential. With a vivid imagination and attention to detail, he is content to spend hours in front of his PC to get every mesh right down to the last vertex.

The nature of my artwork looks into the concept of loss which is delivered through 3D animation. For the main concept of this idea, the majority of my influence can be credited to Trent Reznor and Danny DeVito. I have always been intrigued by the meaning of loss and how the human mind copes with it.

My creative project is a short story that features a man who goes by the name Joe Salaryman, experiencing all manners of loss in his life. Can Joe find the will to persevere in these rough times? My video present sequences where the main character suffers through a series of unfortunate events. The important thing that comes after is that he chooses to cope with it.

I am hoping to show through my short animation the concept of loss which is familiar to most of us, and that it is a part of our everyday lives.

GALLERY TALK

on 20THAPRIL

My artwork is a response to how I feel about an individual’s identity and that identity is not born with but instead influenced by their environment or society. Each of us has made many decisions in our life, both good and bad, of which are purely ours and is not affected by others. It is something I am basing my artwork on – a sculpture of a genderless figure that is an assembly of decisions, sensations and thoughts that are in constant motion and perpetually in a state of confusion.

The figure’s undefined gender and the Rubik’s cube for a head should evoke the feeling being lost but simultaneously being in wonder - a sense of indecisiveness that people can relate to.

Other things can be interpreted as well: It may make us think of the choices we make or the long-forgotten memories that remain in its time to be uncovered.

Husna Ismail is a visual artist who is still and has been on the path of exploring the creative world. She delves into Art as a pursuit of expression.

Several of her art practices involve concepts of fantasy and the evolving society around its environment as well as the manner in which art is perceived in Brunei. This to incite a reaction from the audience to be more open and to explore hidden meanings - as things are not always as they appear to be.

She develops her abilities through research as well as learning from other contemporary artists.

THE ORIGIN OF BUNGA TERUNGPAINTING

Maryanah Malayan specializes in visual art, particularly in paintings. Her impressionism painting technique is due to and inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. Her search to find meaning in identity had made her curious about her own culture and race. From this, she began to explore her true identity as an Iban and have grown a love of sharing what she learned through exchanging of cultural knowledge.

Her main objective is to let people be aware of the importance of cultural preservation. She hopes to achieve this through her art.

3 paintings - 80 x 60 cm

My work exposes the truth behind Bunga Terung which is a sacred tribal tattoo bestowed to the men of the Iban tribe. Bunga Terung translated to “Rope of Life” which is the start of a journey when a young male Iban comes of age.

The Bunga Terung is represented as a frog’s life cycle; it starts with a tadpole’s transformation to a frog interpreted as a young man that is ready to walk into the world as a grown man. The Bunga Terung tattoos are inked on both of the young man’s shoulders before he embarks on his journey into the forest by himself. The tattoos are believed to give the men strength to ‘shoulder’ the tribe’s obligation to protect and provide his family.

NURUN NAZIHAH

Inspired by Beatrice Blue’s Childhood week project that is meant to reminisce childhood memories, ‘Recollect’ is a collection of paintings of four objects that recall the past. I believe through reminiscing, people are encouraged to think back and remember the good things in their past and appreciate them more often. The main focus for these paintings is the different interpretation of the objects by the audience. Each object in the paintings unveils its own background story of which used to be a part of their childhood memories. The feelings and emotions are also emphasized and illustrated through the colours in the paintings in a form of expressive style that reflects on youthful energy. The colourful background represents the fun energy that sums up one’s happiness. The splattering effect represents childishness and the feeling of being carefree.

Nurun Nazihah is a freelance artist who works with painting and drawing. Most of her illustrations are inspirations from her surroundings. She loves working with watercolour, acrylic and ballpoint pen of which she finds joy through various techniques. This had led her to see beauty on these techniques continues to express her works uniquely through her interpretation.

Her favourite medium is watercolour as she loves how it gives a subtle wash and fleeting strokes on any painting. Her style is described as the layering of colours that creates depth that allows the painted subject to come to life.

NOSTALGIA KAMPONG AYER KUPAINTING

23 x 244 x 227 cm

NORAMALI DAUD

My installation includes a series of six paintings, pursuing the traditional genre of imaginative and narrative art by approaching the subject with activities that reminded me of the good old days. This timeline ranges from the 60s to the 70s, and in black and white. My intentions are to preserve the memory rather than to ponder upon the simpler times. These paintings are displayed in the form of a photo album with the ambience of nostalgia. I have included the activities that were used as a routine prior to the current advancement and its unfailing tendency to prosper even in this generation.

A big part of my inspiration is from when I began migrating from Kampong Ayer to land. I notice that the transition is not as different, as both villages similarly practice the same activities such as kite flying, traditional crafting, paddling boats, collecting kupang shells and performing tahlil.

Amali Daud began his work through sketching with pencils and then later, developed to Acrylic painting. He has a keen interest in the classics and is fascinated by the concept of illustrating images using only black and white. This reminded him of the old days where technicolour was absent on television. Growing up in Kampong Ayer have inspired him to become a beacon for change - to create an awareness towards the people of the forgotten activities done in the place where he grew up.

REDEFINING BRUNEI’S FASHIONFASHION DESIGN

‘Redefining Brunei’s Fashion’ is a collection of menswear that is divided into two target markets: the youth and general market. This collection has both aesthetic as well as the functionality aspect. My aim is to modernize a few clothing pieces and fusing two elements: modern and traditional. The youth line aims to introduce innovation in terms of a convertible shirt that functions as a 2-in-1 shirt and a shirt with detachable sleeves. The general line is a traditional Cara Melayu with an innovative approach towards the pocket design and there is also a kurta with ‘tenunan’ cloth sewn onto it. This collection is hoped to introduce a fresh and new look into menswear in Brunei. Furthermore, I would like people to see my vision of fashion and encourage them to appreciate traditional clothing designs.

Qawi Kassim is an aspiring fashion designer, majoring in Art and Creative Technology. He believes that fashion is a way to express yourself that can upgrade you into another if not, an even better version of yourself. His works are inspired by urban designers such as Alexander Wang and The Viridi-Anne. As of now, Qawi continues to experiment with different and more creative ideas into his design. In the future, he hopes to put Brunei on the fashion map of the World.

ANGRY SKIESPHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY

Unlike most photographers, I like to capture special kind of images of God’s divine creation in a fraction of second that requires a lot of passion and perseverance. I had been capturing fearsome forces of nature for more than 20 years; that one would call me a storm chaser.

My passion for photography had inspired me to combine photography along with videography as an installation. Bringing lightning into my photography expresses more than just the haunting beauty; it is also about the fleeting moments of our lives, opportunities that are short-lived. And we have to capture those moments because life is fast-paced and never stay still for any man.

“Angry Skies” is a part of a series of photographs of lightning that were exhibited in 2018. The photographs that I have captured were all taken in Borneo.

Ismandi is an avid photographer born and raised in Jalan Kota Batu where the scenery consists of a forested hillside foreground against a vast sky background. The very soul of the embodiment of his photos is the dark sky where some of the most unpredictable forces of nature came to life. The presentation itself came as quite a unique challenge for him.

He aspires to change the perspective of those who have seen his work to be more attentive towards their surroundings as he uncovers the magnificence of thunderstorms.

YOUR WASTE, MY TREASURE MURAL INSTALLATION

We titled our piece “Your waste, my treasure”. It is a project focusing on the issues of the environment. This art piece is inspired by Joana Vasconcelos, Bordalo II and Lorenzo, where they used waste products for their artwork pieces. With the objective of spreading awareness and showing a solution in helping to save the current environmental issues, we created something similar aimed to influence the people around us. Sculptures are built in the shape of two hands indicating a sense of unity of which sends a message that we can work together towards a better world.

Jillian is a final year student majoring in Art and Creative Technology. Throughout her years of studying in UBD, most of her ideas are executed based on her life experience. She sees all forms of Art as one in general and does not major in any specific creative area. She believes that being the best at everything or one thing is not as important.

However, one thing is for certain - exploring and trying out new ways to create and execute her artworks is what she truly enjoys doing. Now, she tries her best to make every piece different from one another, making them unique.

This concept is executed into our art piece by transforming waste products into something meaningful by only using recyclable materials. In the long run, We hope to create a big impact on society to achieve a greater number of people contributing to saving our world, even by just a little.

Desyanti has been involved in Cultural Art since she was little as she grew up with a choreographer and a musician as parents. She was always encouraged to think creatively, and expressively. She loves to draw geometric shapes, flowers, leaves and the Air Mulih pattern. She believes that art has no boundaries - that the sky’s the limit.

vHer biggest concern today is on the waste pollution, on the use of plastics destroying the environment and endangering species. She hopes to use her creativity in creating a solution to this issue.

A VISION TO A COMPASSIONATE WORLDINSTALLATION

A vision to a compassionate world is a piece that questions humanity’s value. The Rubik’s cube represents the trials faced by a person. When two people face similar issues, they may find similar solutions. Facing difficulties while solving them with another is far better than doing it alone. The image illustrated from the combination of many Rubik’s cubes reveals as the current Sultan of Brunei. This is to relate with his proclamation in 2017’s Golden Jubilee, about the connection between the ruler and his citizens of which he proclaimed that the happiness of his citizens correlates with his and his gratefulness should correlate with his citizens’ as well.

This is to emphasize that the Golden Jubilee was not just a celebration, but a mark where we can start building towards a more compassionate world. Building a better nation is possible through empathy by understanding one another.

UNITYPAINTING INSTALLATION

‘Unity’ is an installation that consists of twelve distinctive paintings set in different situations with the themes of friendship, family, and teamwork. The paintings highlight different activities done at the beach. These paintings are then hanged on different levels and rows that merge together to form one whole scene - a beach. The images that are merged together is there to symbolize the value of unity.

I specifically chose a beach in order to capture a scene in a manner that greatly represents an entire community in an environment. The installation is arranged in a way of which it can only be viewed on one end. If a person stands in another direction, they will not be able to see the image as a whole. This is to show the importance of connection in forming a unity.

UNDERWATER SANCTUARYINSTALLATION

Underwater Sanctuary is a space presenting a solution towards children with Sensory processing issue that is often experienced by those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are hypersensitive to the senses of sight, sound, taste, and smell. Due to this, they may find the most basic daily routines difficult for them. This project, in particular, focuses on the senses of sight and touch. It is a multi-sensory room with an underwater theme designed specifically for children who like the sensation of being underwater.

The walls are made up of textured materials which are purposely placed to help with these two senses. A busy board and a sensory wall are also added to aid with touch. Some giant cushions are placed on the floor, as well as some stepping stools arranged for children lacking body awareness. The bubble tube functions as a stimulator for interaction and the mirror on the wall aids with sight.

Being a mother of 4 children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder have made her see life in a whole new light; There are certain aspects of behaviour that are different to those living in a non-autistic environment. Her child’s indifference is related to the human senses that could create a negative effect on her child’s everyday life.

Using her creativity to enhance life quality and learning development for children with special needs. She is currently working on a solution that focuses on the sensory stimulation that could help autistic children to go through their everyday life.

For my artwork, I chose to create an interactive book for children diagnosed with autism in the hopes to help them develop their literacy skills, improving the quality of their life. Inspired by my niece who has autism, the aim of my book is to help autistic children who have difficulties in communication and social skills-- providing them with a simple, yet a fun interactive means for them to communicate their intentions across, as well as a little diversion to ease them when they are not comfortable in their current environment.

Playing with colours and letters of the alphabet is important for each section and themes that make up each page. My book is designed with the help of Adobe software such as Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator due to my preference for digital illustration, which I will then plan to introduce and market it to everyone that has the need for it.

At the age of 22, Hafizah acquired a passion for doing digital illustration. Ever since then, her interest in videography, photography and digital illustration has grown a great deal. Never one to sit still, she develops a passion for experimenting and exploring colours in all of her artworks.

Her primary goal is to encourage her viewers to live and express themselves creatively.

My artwork will be that of a recipe cookbook that incorporates my own personal cooking journal and will be published in both physical and digital formats to make it more accessible to my potential readers. My inspiration comes from my ordeal of experiencing eating disorders known as anorexia and bulimia, where sufferers exhibit behaviours such as self-starvation, binge-eating and self-induced vomiting.

Therefore, the aim of my artwork is to touch on the issue of what is considered as proper ‘eating habits.’ With the completion of my cookbook, it will encourage readers to learn more about cooking and nutritional diets as well as to support and bring awareness to the difficulties faced by anorexics and bulimics.

‘Self-love’ is a safe space I created for people to relax and recharge after a long and tiring day. It is specifically built for those who are looking to manage their stress. My space is a part of a solution to that problem. I find that it is vital that we connect back to the community. This lounging area consists of circular elements which represent togetherness. I believe that hand-made items create more value.

Therefore, the furniture is all handmade. For the walls, I have painted a mural, and add a few pieces to help better calm the mind. The mural is also signifying my great love for all that is art.

The famous quote of ‘when one door closes, another one opens’ has inspired me to create an artwork about opportunities in life. The door represents the opportunities and the experience we will face in the future. The doors are arranged in a single path to encourage one to keep moving forward to explore more opportunities and to progress to the next life stage. This arrangement of doors emphasize the bent pathways that imitate the infinity symbol.

The infinity symbol, as well as the background that uses the scratch photo effect (old movie effect), signifies that one should not look back to the closed door or mourn over their lost opportunities but to keep looking for a better future that is available.

Wafiy is a visual artist from Brunei Darussalam. He mostly does painting and develops his skill through research and practice. Most of his artwork is inspired by his surroundings, such as nature and human life.

His concern to the people around him had led him to think about their view on ‘opportunity.’ He finds that people tend to stick to their past instead of moving forward once faced by rejection.

With his art, he aims to change the perspective of others on opportunity - that it may not be a lengthy visitor, but the number of doors waiting for us is endless.

A big part of my healthy lifestyle is fitness. It is one of my greatest passions and with that in mind, I seek out to create a fun-filled board game that encourages people to promote an active lifestyle and to enhance our health. I was concerned with the current generation’s health that has started to decline over the years.

Through this fitness Board game, people are able to entertain themselves through a more productive and healthier manner. This will also gently influence the players subconsciously to keep themselves in tip-top shape even if they are not the type to work out regularly.

The gameplay of the game is quite simple - You roll the dice, move your piece, then, get one card among the card stack, and the first to finish wins!

The songs composed for my project unveils the three stages of emotion that most people go through when they fall in love: happiness, sadness, and healing. The lyrics emphasize my experience in the episodes of joy, heartbreak, and moving on as I go through these three stages, myself. The fluidity of the patterns that are presented in the abstract paintings helps to visualize every feeling that is present in these songs – Every emotion, every story, every hardship. The inner thoughts and melodies are expressed through the colours of each emotion. In the first painting, calmness can be felt through the colour of blue when love is at present (magenta). The heartbreak is visualized through a mix of black, representing darkness, and red for anger. The colours in the third painting are of pastel-toned which signifies one’s self-recovery as the colours are not as bright, but still show a calming vibe.

Afnan Asnawi is a contemporary songwriter and a visual artist. Most of his work revolves around a series of abstract paintings of many different colours using acrylic mixed with other media. He uses his emotions and translates them into his art as a form of self-expression.

He has a distinct interest in incorporating his music and portray it in the form of visual art, which makes his style unique. The artist is a firm believer that everyone can see colours through music.

Throughout hardships faced, along with the loss of an important individual that has kept my family together at the age of fourteen, where everything started falling apart right before my eyes, have caused me to self-destruct. During those periods, music was my only way out; The saviour that kept me going. Through this project titled ‘Lost & Found,’ I would like to convey my own two original pieces of music that will hopefully make as many people out there to able to relate and to let them know that they are not alone in any way. With this, I hope the public will keep an open mind to what I have to say and feel through my music. Unfolding my life story through the music videos, the audience will be able to experience them first-hand through the virtual reality where each headset will tell you a story of their own.

My art installation, entitled Connectivity, invites viewers to reflect on our struggle towards social betterment, public sharing in the World-Wide Web. In my installation, multiple layers of mesh wires are arranged to form a cloud-like canopy representing the Worldwide Web, and other forms of digital platforms. The canopy is inspired by a Korean-American artist, Sunny Soo Park. I use multi-coloured papers to emulate an out-of-this-world effect on my art installation. Each piece of paper attached to the mesh wire represents digital data.

Internet surfers are represented by the two humanoid figures and each is connected to the canopy via some nylon strings representing “connectivity” to the World-Wide Web. Both figures reach out to laptops to signify modern devices that we can’t live without. The black laptop represents negative aspects of technology while the white represents the positive. My installation is about sharing and moving forward to a better future.

Since the very beginning, I have been using Islamic elements, as well as Al-Quran verses to connect with most of my artworks. Sirat Al-Mustaqim is translated to ‘Titian Sirah’ and it is based on a verse from Surah Al-Fatihah that tells a tale about the thread-like pathway that leads to heaven in the afterlife. The members of the dead will walk on this pathway (titian) that eventually leads them to heaven. However, those who have done wrong while they lived will feel the weight of their sins, causing them to drop down to hell.

This artwork is an exploration of my representation of heaven and hell. The hell side of the artwork is illuminated with red while white represents heaven - pure and unknown.

Ariffin Zulaini is an artist who practices Islamic art, namely in calligraphy and the distinctive geometrical patterns/motifs of Islamic art.

He applies these styles into different techniques such as digital illustration, graphic design, and still-life paintings. He is no stranger to the art of paper cutting either, practising and developing this technique since 2014 and is very eager to exhibit his works to his audience.

Comfort Zen features the idea of taking into account the uninspired, run-of-the-mill life. The idea is derived from the rising factor that is risking the mental well-being of individuals. This piece is my personal response to that issue, in the hope to create a scene that acts as a retreat from the hectic life, which is very crucial for human beings. Each piece created, creates its own unique sense of relaxation through inspirations from my art journey.

The whole concept of the space is inspired by a Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which stands on the idea of capturing beauty within the imperfections of life and peacefully accepting its growth and decay. Thus, I created this space in the hope to give a sense of zen to the people as they immerse fully into it with the arrangements, with a little touch of nature.

Overwhelmed by our surroundings, we often get easily exhausted. Uncontrollably, the mind chatters on its own all the time; Often recalling the past events, imagining the future. The absence of colour in this space helps one to let go of any reactive tendencies while the rustic aesthetic embraces the impermanence, incompletion and imperfection that are found in every existence. This is to remind us to accept things - our past experiences and current situation.

The fallen leaves and branches may help one to pause in time; To settle down and try to step out of the outside world. Be with the simplest self - No intruding thoughts. No disturbances; Even if it is just for a while.

My artwork entitled ‘See the Light’ touches on the concept of suicide and the challenges of overcoming it. Despite being low statistically in our country, suicide or attempts to commit suicide derived from a mental illness such as depression remains a major cause of concern as people treat it lightly. I aim to change this mindset through my artwork installation which is a sculpture of a nondescript person clutching a piece of paper.

Underneath the sculpture is a platform surrounded by a series of hate messages & negative thoughts, remarks, and insults. Only by standing above all the negativity, can the suicidal person be able to conquer and overcome the struggle, with the paper being interpreted as an analogy of a reward.

Hasbullah becomes involved in the creative world during his internship at Creative Space and Art Vision, and at the time he was planning on becoming a full-time designer. However, during that time, he had met artists with different career paths and from there, he decided he could become more than just that.

Hasbullah favours sculpture as his medium and his works often deal with how he sees the current give-and-take society. Currently, he is actively juggling between being sculptor and curator.

For my project, I created a Malay interactive book that is aimed towards parents who are interested in teaching their children of the wonders of Islam. The special thing about this book is that this book is a communication tool for the parents which also serves as entertainment for their children with its contents. The book is great for both home and school environment. It is also great to bring for long trips during your travels.

The book is filled with fun activities to educate curious minds. It is also designed to encourage their children’s creativity through puzzle games, finding-the-missing-object, and a fun colouring activity page. Furthermore, the book can also build children’s ability to read as well as to help them develop social and language skill.

Munirah is a student of the University of Brunei Darussalam, majoring in Art and Creative Technology. She has a deep interest in many forms of art such as painting, mixed media art, graphic design and product design. Her strong will to improve her artistic skills becomes her very own motivation.

She was once one of Mekar’s cartoon illustrator because of her love for an interactive concept. Through her experience as an illustrator, she would like to further develop her skill and hopefully, one day, publish an Islamic education activity book for children.

Time is something that we can neither see, nor touch and instead, is a concept used to mark schedules, days or events. The concept of time and its importance is what I wish to explore for my creative project. An hourglass is used to represent the concept of time and within it, the steady trickle of golden sand showing our brief moment in this life. Alongside this hourglass, is a trio of sculptures that tell the major stages of a human’s life.

The first sculpture is a newborn baby that marks the beginning of life; next is the youthful to adulthood phase symbolized by a sculpture of a young lady; and the final stage will be that of an old woman that has past her prime. With the combination of the hourglass and these sculptures, I wish to convey the message which emphasizes how precious time is and that it should not be wasted on unimportant things.

Saidatul Moksin is a visual artist and graphic designer. She went to college in hopes of becoming an interior designer but later opened to explore other forms of art. This allows her to have a wide perspective of what art is made of and was able to fuse these forms to create her own unique style.

Saidatul believes that one of the most remarkable artworks start with a single dot on a blank piece of paper - Anything is possible. She hopes that one day, her art may inspire young artists to be willing to go beyond their comfort zones and to always find beauty in the unlikeliest of places.

My piece features Arabic calligraphy and a repetitive take on Elia Abu Madi’s poem entitled “Lastu Adri” which uncovers his philosophical thoughts, seeking to unravel life’s purpose and meaning. He does this by accentuating his queries, while constantly answering them to “I do not know.” “I do not know” in Arabic is highlighted through mosaic shades of gold, symbolizing puzzles of questions while highlighting its importance.

Below this piece, lies seven old scriptures representing history, with QR codes, leading to my personal journal entries. The entries act as a response to those raised questions. My past experiences taught me to understand the lessons of which I can always refer to, from the Qur’an and hadith. While bringing in my journey of self-discovery, spiritually, this artwork also acts as a

Zubaidah has dedicated most of her life in the craft of expression. She has a passion for all things art which includes dance, music, literature and others. Her greatest inspiration comes from Islam, where she aspires to help people understand and find solutions to life from the hadith and the Qur’an.

In 2017, she studied Arabic in Kuwait University so she could have a better understanding of the Qur’an in its original context which soon led her to discover the beauty of Arabic poetry that taught her to see life in a different light, bringing her closer to her faith.
