Koalas are mammals that live in forests in Australia. It is not correct to call them koala bears because they are not bears. They do have soft thick fur and ears with long white hairs on the tips. Koalas sleep during the day and eat at night. Koalas eat leaves and bark from different trees, but eucalyptus leaves are their favorite. Because koalas eat so many eucalyptus leaves, they often smell like certain kinds of cough drops. Female koalas have a pouch where a baby koala lives. A baby koala is called a joey.
Marta is a lifeguard at the beach. Most of the time, things are quiet. However, last week, Marta’s friend, Jack, swam too far out. The tide was strong, and he couldn’t swim back.
Marta spotted him and jumped in the ocean. Soon she was pulling Jack in. Then they were back on the beach.
Jack felt a little shaky. But he was fine. He was also very grateful. Marta did a wonderful thing when she saved Jack’s life!
