Welcome and thank you for joining Gray Matters Capital Foundation (GMC) at the first global symposium on Affordable Private Schools. GMC believes that access to quality education can provide new opportunities and significantly improve lives for children and families. Through our work, we seek to strengthen Affordable Private Schools (APS) by connecting schools to resources that allow them to improve the quality of education while remaining accessible and affordable for low‐income families. We look for partnerships with schools and others within the ecosystem who share our quest to keep learning at the forefront of APS business model. This Symposium is an important opportunity to bring together stakeholders from across the globe to shape this sector’s future. Since each participant is currently making a valuable contribution to the sector, the agenda has been designed for active and engaged participation. Together, we will share experiences and knowledge that will help us evaluate how each of our initiatives enhance the APS ecosystem and ensure a bright future for students. Affordable Private Schools Initiative ∗ School Ratings Tool

GMC has created a School Ratings system to make information more available and transparent in the sector.

The system will help school managers, parents, regulators, and investors better assess the quality of education

offered by APSs.

GMC is conducting a study to explore avenues and increase the availability of infrastructure loans to APS

operators in Kenya, Ghana, Peru, Ecuador and Dominican Republic – countries where significant Affordable

Private School activity has already been documented.

EnterprisingSchools.com is a collaborative online resource for stakeholders working to improve APSs across the

world. It is a portal where education practitioners, academics, investors, donors, and other stakeholders can

connect, communicate, collaborate and share information in order to better understand the sector.

School Visits: Students, Teachers, and Parents Speak Out

Small groups will visit an APS in Hyderbad’s Old City and participate in inspirational conversations with

students, teachers, managers, and parents.

The Brains Behind the Business: Interviews with School Owners

School owners will share the triumphs and challenges of their experiences, along with interventions that

have made a difference.

Affordable Private Schools: Profile, Challenges & Opportunities

Professor James Tooley will provide a sector overview and share APS case studies from different geogra‐

phies. Facilitator will then introduce SWOT exercise and pre‐assigned groups will brainstorm on sector’s

SWOT from their perspective.

Tactical Session I: Curriculum Tools & Technology

Educomp, iDiscoveri, and Rumi Education will share their innovative curriculum interventions with APSs.

Participants will discuss accomplishments and challenges, success metrics, potential areas for collaboration

in

curriculum enhancement for APSs and ways to scale interventions.

Tactical Session II: Government Engagement

CCS, KISA and USAID will discuss the regulatory environment affecting APSs in their respective countries.

Participants will explore how best to engage the government in sector activities and strategies for garner‐

ing support.



Tactical Session III: Assessment GMC, M‐CRIL, MSDF and Pratham/ASER will present the work they have done in assessment including

insight on strategic goals and implementation challenges. Participants will explore opportunities for

broader collaboration around assessment and likely pitfalls to be faced in sector adoption.

Tactical Session IV: Training

Gyan Shala, IFC, Teacher Foundation and USAID will present their experiences with teacher training and

management capacity building at APSs. Participants will discuss opportunities and challenges and search

for ways to increase training opportunities for more APSs.

Networking Lunch (self selected working groups)

Participants will have the opportunity to ask others for advice on their work by hosting lunch tables.

Participants will sign up according to their interests and tables will be organized around the various

topics.

Tactical Session II: School Financing

ASPIRE, ISFC and Sinapi Aba Trust will present APS lending models including what makes them unique,

insight on goals and challenges and projected financial and/or social return. Participants will discuss

issues and make recommendations for increasing access to school lending for more APSs.

Firefish Networks Firefish Networks provides English Training services. They have conducted programs for teachers at APS. They have also actively defining a micro‐philanthropy portal that seeks to connect teachers from APS to donors worldwide. Gyan Shala Gyan Shala is a school operator with 420 low‐cost centers for slum children, with a total enrolment of more than 12,000. The total cost of education in schools is around US$37‐42 per child per year, inclusive of learning material and stationary. iDiscoveri Education iDiscoveri is a social enterprise with a mission to renew education in India. iDiscoveri, founded in 1996, partners with schools across the country to raise the bar of how children learn and how teachers teach. It offers schools a comprehensive platform for student curriculum, assessment, teacher education, instructional leadership.

They are bringing private sector investment to the hundreds of low‐cost private schools, dramatically enhancing their financial and educational performance. Omega School’s ultimate goal is to deliver quality educational services at the lowest cost on a grand scale. Pi Policy Innovations Policy Innovations is a consulting firm aimed at providing solutions to challenges faced by education‐related organizations. Specific expertise lies in program evaluation, education scheme design, market research, philanthropic advisory services and academic research support. Pratham Education Foundation Pratham is the largest NGO working to provide quality education to the underprivileged children of India. Established in 1994, today Pratham reaches millions of children living both in rural and urban areas through a range of interventions, primarily in the areas of teacher training and community based classes. Rumi Education Pvt. Ltd. Rumi is a chain of low‐cost private schools aimed at improving life opportunities of India's children through affordable quality education that breaks out of the standard rote educational model and expands into the community. Rumi is an Orient Global Development initiative. Sunshine Fortune Education Investment and Consultancy Co., Ltd. Sunshine Fortune Education Investment & Consultancy Co. Ltd (SFEIC) was established in May 2007. Prof. James Tooley is the Director of the Board of the Company. SFEIC mainly focuses on education of low‐income families and currently invests in private schools for migrating children in Beijing. The Teacher Foundation Teacher Foundation is working to revamp the school education system in India with new energy, enthusiasm and expertise. In the past 6 years it has worked in significant ways with over 5,000 teachers from across the country. It is working with 5 APSs in Bangalore to bring about measurable change in student learning outcomes. THOUGHT LEADERS Professor James Tooley James Tooley is an award‐winning scholar who has done extensive research on private schools serving the poor in low‐income countries. Mr. Tooley has been featured in PBS and BBC documentaries and has been covered in Newsweek, the Atlan‐tic, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. He currently lives in Hyderabad, India, where he works with entrepreneurs and teachers who inspired his book, "The Beautiful Tree". FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS ASPIRE ASPIRE is a microfinance institution in Dominican Republic currently providing financing to affordable private schools. Overall, ASPIRE serves 10,500 clients, with a $3.9mm portfolio outstanding. It is a member of the Opportunity International Network. Growing Opportunity Finance Growing Opportunity Finance is a Non‐Banking Finance Company in Chennai, India. Founded in 2006, GO Finance is currently serving over 46,000 clients and has a portfolio outstanding of $4mm. It is a member of the Opportunity International Network. Indian School Finance Company ISFC is a non‐banking finance company (NBFC) which extends medium term infrastructure loans to APSs charging average student fee range of US$5‐12/mo. Its goal is to help the most capable school operators reach more children with improved the academic quality. ISFC has disbursed over 82 loans, averaging US$28,000. K-Rep Bank K‐Rep Bank Limited is the first and only commercial bank in Kenya that caters specifically for the low‐income people. It currently serves over 58,000 clients through its 21 outlets and has a portfolio outstanding of $79.3mm. It is currently lending to schools through a partnership with IFC. Sinapi Aba Trust Sinapi Aba Trust (SAT)is one of the implementing partners of the Opportunity International Network (OI) – an International Christian Non‐governmental Organization with headquarters in Chicago, US. The company was formed to primarily provide small and micro‐credit services to viable small and micro enterprises that could not access financial assistance from the formal banking institutions due to obvious reasons such as lack of adequate collateral. SKS Educational Society Founded in 1997, SKS Microfinance is one of the fastest growing microfinance organizations in the world, having provided over $278 million in loans to 3,500,000 women clients in poorest parts of India. SKS Educational Society was launched to run rural learning academies. It currently serves 600 students and 46 teachers. Trident Microfin Private Ltd Trident Microfin was established in 2007 and is headquartered at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, India. It currently serves over 81,000 clients and has a portfolio outstanding of over $8.3mm.

ASSOCIATIONS

Kenya Independent Schools Association KISA is a national association of private schools serving urban, low income households in Kenya. KISA was established in 1999 and has over 1,000 member schools. It works to enhance schools’ internal capacities and improve the policy and regulatory framework in which they operate. DONORS Gray Matters Capital GMC uses philanthropic capital to research initiatives with partners in developing countries to build sustainable, replicable business models for the benefit of underserved populations. GMC’s focus is to improve the ecosystem for APSs in India through building transparency, connecting service providers and increasing sector awareness. Michael & Susan Dell Foundation MSDF is focused on improving education and health through opportunities with the greatest potential to directly and measurably transform the lives of children living in urban poverty. MSDF currently supports pilot projects aimed at enhancing student perform‐ance at APSs in Hyderabad and Bangalore. U.S. Agency for International Development USAID supports education initiatives across the globe with the primary purpose of ensuring education for all. USAID produced an APS study and plans to do an APS meta‐analysis, particularly as it relates to donor and host government engagement. It has a pilot program in Ghana that provides capital and capacity building to APSs.

INVESTORS Gray Ghost Ventures GGV is the umbrella organization for founder Bob Pattillo’s initiatives, built around social impact through investment and nfrastructure development. GGV seeks catalytic, early stage investments in the developing world. Areas of work include: Microfi‐nance, Social Ventures Investment, and Affordable Private Schools. International Finance Corporation IFC fosters sustainable economic growth in developing countries. IFC Africa schools program was piloted in Ghana in 2005 and has been replicated in Kenya and Rwanda. The program provides loans as well as advisory services to schools. IFC has committed $50 m in financing and $6 million in advisory services. Orient Global OG is a private investment group founded by New Zealand‐born entrepreneur Richard Chandler. OG is committed to fighting illiteracy by improving the quality and availability of education for low‐income communities in developing countries. OG started Rumi Schools of Excellence, a low‐cost school chain of in India. SONG Investment Advisors India Pvt. Ltd. SONG is the sole investment advisor to the SONG Investment Management Company. SONG aims to demonstrate that SME investing not only can achieve shareholder returns‐hence catalyzing greater sector investment‐but can also generate stakeholder returns, such as increasing opportunities for the underserved.
