Supply Side Transformation on EG&S• Within Factory Walls to Beyond Factory Walls • Effectiveness+Efficiency system loop-closing

optimization – Infrastructural lock-in design – benign envi system design –

green building, biomimicry, landscape ecology to optimize energy efficiency

– Energy and water (resource) cascading (treat to add value and reduce environmental impact vis-à-vis treat to discharge) – MFA, IOA, LCA

– Co-generation and poly-generation (and carbon capture?) (corporate core competence strategy – a sustainable business model)

– (3+x)R repair, remanufacture, and other r’s through service system (PSS vis-à-vis conventional maintenance scheme, EPR/Take-back law, Dfe)

Supply Side Transformation on EG&S

• Using LC thinking / System boundary expanded – think about how clean is clean enough (EIPecotowneco-cityeco-provinceeco-region)

• Beyond the walls documented cases many in Japan, Korea, China, Australia – East Asia and Australia Corridor (3 developmental continuum stages)

• within the Walls documented cases mostly in SEA and SA - need more documentation Source: Chiu, 2009

Cleaner Production Technologies: Legality

• Standardization and legal terms in EIP indicators (circular economy)

• Government support

What we missed? [1]

• Explore opportunities– South-South Partnership (SSP)– Resource (human resources) mapping in AP (e.g.

GTZ, EU)– Strengthen CP technology development capability– Value added strategies in the downstream of lifecycle

1. Industry recognizes its key role for sustainable development. Initiatives should continue its active outreach to industry in the region.

2. Governments must ensure that adequate financial incentives and instruments are present in the market.

3. Private-public partnerships should be recognized as an opportunity for industry to work with other sectors of society to generate solutions to common challenges.

Conclusions and Recommendations*

Page 18: APRSCP: Experience on EG&S Issues Greening Industry Conference Sep 9-11, 2009 Manila

18

4. It is essential that efforts to integrate SMEs into the programmes and activities aimed at sustainable development be increased.

5. Transfer of environmentally sound know-how needs to be supported by governments, international organizations and industry associations by developing means of access to information, verification of information and evaluation of information.
