A New Beginning

March DCM

Page 3: April Newsletter

Hello everyone! Welcome to the new Key Club term! I would like to formally introduce myself. I am Marianne Lagasca and I will be your bulletin editor for the 2013-2014 term. I would like to start off by telling you a little bit about myself. I am currently a junior and if you didn’t know my past position was being one of the two histo-rians. It’s just the beginning so I will be a little shaky but don’t you worry. I am still learning and on my way to becoming a bulletin editor you can depend on. The transition from the old board to the new is the most important so please be patient with us. Soon we’ll be ready to show the best we have! My goal is to create a newsletter that everyone will enjoy. I also know that not many members are interested nor read the newsletter so I will come up with ways in order to increase the amount of viewers. This newsletter is a way for the members to stay up-dated on everything Key Club so hopefully I’ll be able to use my skills to the best of my abili-ties in order for that to happen. A personal goal of mine is to be able to get to know each and every one of your readers better so if you ever happen to see me, whether it be at a ser-vice event or just in the hallways, stop in front of me, give me a smile, and introduce yourself. I enjoyed creating my first ever newsletter for you all and I look forward to create all your fu-ture newsletters. Please anticipate for more! Marianne

President

As president, I wish to create a stronger club with increased membership activity. I want members to see why Key Clubbers

truly love serving for their community rather than simply completing hours for a medal. Overall, I want our club to grow so it can reach beyond expectations. Let

the 2013-2014 term commence! Corliss Kanazawa

Officer VP Member VP

Treasurer Secretary Bulletin Editor

I want to be able to retain as much members as possible and try to keep them active; I also wish to lend an

ear to the members as well in order to get them to do service and attend meetings in a comfortable environ-

ment. Joshua Jaeho Lee

2013-2014 Core Board’s Goals

I hope with my limited role as secretary that I perform my duties to the benefit of our club. I hope my endeavors equate or possibly exceed those of my predecessors for the over-all well-being of our club's reputation. Like-wise, I wish my ardor for key club pervades the mindsets of others so that we create an environment that espouses key club spirit!

Rosa Kwak

As bulletin editor, I want to keep all members updated with the latest and most important news they need to know each month. I want to create a newsletter they can all look forward to each month and enjoy reading it. I also want to gain more readers with each newsletter that comes out.

Marianne Lagasca

This new term, I hope to bring as much as I can into Key Club - as much as I've learned and taken from it. While I take on my new responsibility of keeping our club finan-cially stable, I want to increase my dedica-tion as well as my appreciation for other members. As it is my last year in CVHS Key Club , I will try my best to raise as much money as possible for Key Club, PTP & Eliminate and to help others see the great value of our clubbie. Kaitline Cho

This new term I really hope I can contribute more than I have ever before in my last two offices in key club. I hope that I not only do my responsibilities properly but also help out our president Corliss Kanazawa as much as possible as well as cooperating with my close

friend and co-VP Joshua Lee. I will make sure to oversee all the other officers and make this

year run as smoothly as possible. David Chanju Kim

LA Marathon

Volunteering for the LA Marathon was perhaps one of the most exhilarating, if not, most interest-ing, experiences to start the Spring Break off with. Nothing beats waking up at five o’clock in the morning for a fresh start of service (no, really). With several roads closed, most of the volunteers had to follow down a strict, gruesome path of dark and suspicious streets, but the destination was worth it—Sunset Boulevard quickly be-came Sunrise Boulevard (cue applaud), and in my opinion, one can easily adjust to the thrill of vol-unteering by simply volunteering at a place with a good view! Whether it was the alluring empty street, or the free complimentary T-shirts, many of the volunteers were already quite satisfied be-fore the runners even came.

We first started off pre-filling the thousands of cups of water hours before the race started, stacking and piling them on top of each other. Stationed at Mile 12, it took a while for the run-ners to finally reach our spot, but when they did, we were more than eager to hand them their long-awaited drinks (to the point where the adults forced us to stay back and to stop shoving it in the runners’ faces). I personally believe that Mile 12 owes much of its cheering spirit to Key Club, because we went wild and crazy giving the runners their much-deserved support. The best moment of that day was when another fellow Key Clubber, who was running the marathon, suddenly asked the signature ques-tion: “KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL?!” I still re-member the surge of confusion that ran through observers and adults when we did our cheer in the middle of all that hysteria—“Yeah, is that a new trend going around these days?” questioned one man volunteering behind us. While Mile 12 was nearing its end for most runners, the street was literally littered from one end to the other with thousands of crushed and stampeded cups. The LA Marathon was a wonderful volunteering experience be-cause the spirits of the runners epically clashed with the spirits of the Key Clubbers; the colliding result was simply indescrib-able. I strongly recommend more Key Clubbers to come in on the fun for next year’s marathon.

This month’s DCM may have been a small one but it was one filled with laughter and smiles. Although it was Dia Cabrera’s last DCM as LTG she showed how much spirit she had and continued to work hard through the day. Dur-ing this small DCM, the D3N starfishes took their time to nominate people who deserved it. These nominations could help a member be possibly recognized and the winners would be announced during DCON. After spending some-time nominating, we took the time to relax and get to know one another by eating some pizza provided by our special friends from La Canada. Dia has been trying to carry on a tradition within our division by using a little something called ‘The Love Box’ where people could anonymously write a special note with a compliment to someone else. With this being Dia’s last DCM many wrote ’I love you’s and ’Thank you’s to show our never ending appreciation for her. We ended on a light note when Dia kept her prom-ise of letting the members have the opportunity to throw water balloons at her. Although this may be her last DCM as LTG, we will never forget the dedication and passion she poured into our division. We could never thank her enough.

3 days filled with Key Clubbers from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii, constant work-shops, inspiring speeches, cheering at 7AM, eating junk food at 12AM, the tears of leaving seniors, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. DCON 2013 was a lifetime changing experience for all of the dedicated and spirited members that attended. Upon our day of arrival, all Key Clubbers dressed up in full-out spirit gear to represent their home division. We continued with workshops to help us gain knowledge on how to become a better leader. We also had the very first general session where many divisions fought fiercely in order to gain possession of the spirit stick. On the second day, we dressed in our snazziest business attire and started the only full day of DCON with a healthy breakfast then headed of to our designated rooms in order to have the caucus meeting where we would vote on the next district board. We continued our day with more work-shops, one with our guest motivational speaker, Scott Greenberg, and was able to walk through a college EXPO. The second day ended with 2 more general sessions and the popular Governor’s Ball. On the third day, we all woke up knowing this would be the last day. We had our last general ses-sion where there were many smiles as divisions cheered for the awards they received. But there were also many tears as this was the day where the new board would be installed. It was a day full of “See you next year”s, “Goodbyes”s, and “I love you”s. We were able to see the powerful impact that Key Club has made not only the graduating class but all others as well. DCON 2013 was an event that shall not be forgotten.

Election Results March 27 | Introducing your new board!

On March 27, we held the elec-tions in order to decide on the new 2013-2014 board. Many members ap-plied and tried their hardest in order to win the vote of the members. Those applying for core board positions pre-pared a two-minute speech while non-core board positions prepared a one and a half-minute speech. We were sure many were nervous but we were able to see the dedication each appli-cant had. It’s a shame that not every-one was able to get a position but we are glad that many took an interest in getting one. We appreciate everyone that applied and put their all into their speeches and caucus sessions. Even if you didn’t get the position you wanted this time around don’t be discouraged! Try out again next year! We hope to see you there!

Thanks to the Seniors

Dear Seniors, For all the hours you served, for all the cheers you shouted, for all the dedication you put in, and for all you’ve done for Key Club we’d all like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Although this may be a sad farewell this is not the end for you. After graduat-ing, you’ll head off into the real world and begin your new life. You will face many challenges and may want to give up but don’t. All the hard work you put in will al-ways pay off in the end. We all have complete faith in you and know you’ll be successful in the end. However, never forget the friends you made, the lessons you learned, and all the wonderful memories you made dur-ing your stay at Crescenta Valley. We’ll miss you a great deal and thank you again! We hope to see you soon! Yours truly, CVHS Key Club
