Why WWhy Wait, Just Do Itait, Just Do ItWhy wait, just do it! That is the advice Marj Schierkolk has for anyone thinking about losing weight or
wanting to be healthier. It was on December 20, 2010 that Marj Schierkolk reached a weight she says she neverwanted to see. She made up her mind right then to lose weight, get in better shape, and be healthier. Friendstold her, "It's almost New Year's. Just wait until January." To which Marj replied, "Why should I wait?"
So Marj set out to do just that. She started making changes in her life that she could sustain and continuetowards her goal of being healthier. By making small changes in her daily habits she made a huge impact onher life. She wanted a fitness center with easy, flexible hours to fit her schedule working nights, but she knewaccountability would have to be a part of her commitment to getting healthy. She knew before long it wouldbe easy to skip a day here and there, then a few, and pretty soon just stop going. She chose to see the person-al trainers at Shenandoah Medical Center (SMC) who would hold her accountable for her progress and helpher along the way. Heather Grebert, Personal Trainer at SMC, met with Marj to design a program just for her.Heather learned Marj had her own rules. No running, no counting calories, and she wasn't going to give up Dr.Pepper. No problem. The personal trainers at SMC ask everyone they work with about their lifestyle, healthhistory, and goals when designing a program. "The staff adapts programs to the individual. It's a cooperativeplan," says Schierkolk.
Marj learned that she needed to eat at least three times a day, not two meals a day like before, which sur-prised her. She does not eat within three hours of going to bed any more either. Marj started eating more sen-sibly. She learned to make lower caloric choices, watch her portion sizes, and limit the number of times she
eats out. When co-workers brought fudge and other goodies to work at Christmas time, she had one piece instead of three. She still drinksDr. Pepper, just not as much. She switched to Propel flavored water and now drinks plain water to stay hydrated. Instead of going to thevending machine for a snack at work, she brings her own snacks. Marj prepares more of her own food and eats less processed foods. "I don'tkeep Hot Pockets and frozen pizza on hand anymore" she says.
Ironically, Marj doesn't own a scale. She weighs herself once or twice a week at the SMC fitness center where she is held accountable. She says you have to set realistic goals, like losing a small amount of weight with a tentative date to reach it. "It's a target," Marj says. Herpersonal trainer, Heather, monitors her body fat and inches, not just weight, and keeps the focus on getting healthy. According to Heather, the majority of clients come for weight loss and then they learn it is all about making healthy lifestyle choices.
The fitness center at Shenandoah Medical Center has a "fun atmosphere" says Marj, and they "don't get in your face. Everyone is pleas-ant and encouraging." She likes the fact that the program changes about every 6-8 weeks. Heather changes a client's program more oftenwhen she sees someone's commitment starting to fade. She commends Marj for being very disciplined and committed. "Marj stuck with it"says Heather. A personal trainer's job is not only to design exercise programs but to work with the ever changing, roller coaster levels ofenthusiasm and emotions clients experience. As people reach their goals and as their priorities change, the personal trainers continue tochange clients' programs and challenge them in new aspects. What has been the biggest surprise to Marj after losing 70 pounds and 46 inch-es and 10.4 percent body fat? "That I could do this!" she exclaims. When she went shopping for new clothes, she surprised herself by fittinginto smaller sizes than she expected. She has dropped 4 clothing sizes so far. "Nothing is more rewarding for me than helping people suc-ceed," says Heather. Sometimes Heather gets more excited than the client!
Marj has created a chart to follow her progress and milestones. Heather even found an app for her phone to conveniently track the foodshe eats. Marj is reading food labels now and even goes for a jog sometimes, which doesn't seem so daunting anymore. She still eats whatshe wants, just less. She rewards herself with a massage now and then and recently bought herself a digital camera.
Marj stays active by participating in Boy Scouts of America with her extended family. Hiking up the bluff at Little Sioux Boy Scout Camphas become much easier and she doesn't need to stop and rest along the way. Giving someone a piggyback ride recently reminded her ofhow much weight she used to carry around all the time.
Her advice to others who want to lose weight is to eat healthy, exercise, find what motivates you, and just do it. "This was not aNewYear's resolution" says Marj. "It's a lifelong adjustment."

Annual Coin Show Opens to PublicBY DAVID MORGANSTAFF WRITER
This year the annual InternationalCoin Collectors Association will openit’s doors to the general public. Thefive day coin show is a unique op-portunity for anyone that has coins, whether it’s a single coin or an entirecollection. They can meet with andsell directly to the collector’s club.Admission is free and there is no ob-ligation to sell. The types of coins thecollectors are looking for include sil-ver dollars, half dollars, quarters and
dimes dated 1964 and before. Actu-ally, the half dollars can date all theway to 1970. The government usedsilver to make most U. S. coinage until1965 when they started using cheaperclad. Silver coins made before 1965are made with 90 percent silver andare worth many times their face valuebecause of today’s high silver market.Recently, silver has been trading forabout $32 per oz. Five years ago, sil-ver was just over $4 per oz. This dra-matic increase has raised the price ofthese silver coins dramatically. There-fore, people that have these coins are
selling them to take advantage of therecord high prices. During this fiveday event, those who have coins theywish to sell will be able to do just that.Unlike selling your coins at a pawnshop or one of those traveling “we buyanything” sales, this show is operatedby collectors who pay much higherprices.
This show isn’t just for silver coinseither. They are also interested in goldcoins, paper currency, nickels andpennies too. The United States gov-ernment started minting coins in 1793.If those early coins are in good condi-
tion, they can be worth big money. Forinstance, a 1793 silver dollar could beworth as much as $20,000 if it’s theright one. Compare that to a commonwheat back penny from the 1960’s—still collectible but only worth a fewcents. Old paper currency can be wortha lot too. A common silver certificateis only worth a couple of bucks but an1890’s $20 bill in excellent conditioncould be worth thousands. This eventis a place you can learn about the coinsand paper currency that you have anda chance to sell directly to collectors.
NEWS IN BRIEFSTAFF REPORT
Mary Childs was amazed at thevalue of the coin collection shehad taken to the local coin collec-tors’ show. Mary’s uncle had col-lected coins throughout his entirelife. Harry was 12 years old in1965 when he took an interest incoin collecting. Going through hisfather’s pocket change became adaily ritual.
That’s around the time whenthe government stopped using sil-ver to make coins and started usingthe much cheaper clad. Harry wasintrigued by the silver coins—theywere colder to the touch than thenewer clad coins and they soundeddifferent when they clanked to-gether. Harry thought these silvercoins would eventually be takenout of circulation and may be worthsomething more than face valuesome day. He was right. Throughthe sixties and much of the seven-ties it was not uncommon to findthese silver coins in pocket change. However, when they made theirway back to the mint, they wouldbe replaced with the newer cladcoins. The silver coins would bemelted down and gone forever.
Harry accumulated quite a col-lection over the years. The silvercoins he collected were not veryrare—in fact, they were mostlyheavily circulated and had commondates. But in the past 4 years, silverhas risen to record high prices. Cur-rently, silver is trading for around$33 per oz. That makes coins dated1964 and earlier worth many timestheir face value.
Uncle Harry was right—thesecoins were worth keeping. Harryenjoyed collecting these coinsthroughout his life and now hecould do something special forsomeone close to him. Harry neverhad children of his own, but wasvery close to his brother’s onlychild, Mary. Mary had workedhard and was very independent. She took out student loans to getthrough college and had recentlygraduated. She had just landed herfirst job and was starting to builda life for herself. Harry decidedto give his coin collection to Maryand have her sell it to pay down herstudent loans. At first, Mary didn’taccept the offer because she wantedto do things on her own, but UncleHarry was pretty persistent.
After separating the coins bydenomination and type, Mary load-ed up the coins and headed to ourcoin show. After a short registra-tion, Mary was seated in front ofone of the coin experts. The volumeof coins Mary brought in promptedthe collector to summon the helpof two additional collectors. Af-ter counting all the coins and to-taling them up, ($2374.75 in facevalue alone) the offer was made:$37,996.00. Mary had to ask thecollector to repeat the offer again. She started crying tears of joy andsaid “SOLD!” Neither she nor heruncle had any idea that his col-lection was worth that much. Thestudent loans would be paid in full, with money left over. It was a goodday for Mary…a very good day!
