Local & District Scholarship Descriptions

1. A. Brian Simmons Scholarship $1000

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating student in School District 79 (Cowichan Valley) who has demonstrated outstanding citizenship, leadership, volunteerism and community building service and who intends to pursue further education at a Canadian university.

2. Archie and Mary Greenwell Bursary $300This bursary is awarded in the names of Archie and Mary Greenwell to honour their contributions to the community of Lake Cowichan. Applicants of this award must be pursuing a career or trade after post-secondary studies. To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria: Must be former student of A.B. Greenwell Elementary; Service and citizenship are a consideration; Academic success is a consideration but not mandatory; Financial need is a consideration.

3. Bell -Kretschmer Memorial Bursary $250This memorial bursary honours Brenda Bell and Patrick Kretschmer. This award is for an outstanding Lake Cowichan Secondary School student in the area of community service as well as good academic performance.

A variety of locally sponsored scholarships and bursaries are available to Lake Cowichan School (LCS) graduates for the school year ending in June 2019. Some Scholarships are chosen by the LCS Scholarship Committee. This scholarship committee attempts to match qualified students with the criteria laid out in each scholarship. If a suitable candidate is not found, the committee may make a choice based on successful academic progress, volunteering and post-secondary planning. Sometimes the award is simply not given out in a particular year due to unsuitable candidates.

Please recognize that the scholarships/bursaries are subject to change without notice. Those that are highlighted are not yet confirmed. Please check the website often to keep up-to-date with any changes. Additions and/or changes will also be noted on Grad 2019 facebook page and the Grad whiteboard.

Unless otherwise stated, the application package is due no later than 4:00pm on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.

4. Beta Sigma Phi Bursary $500This bursary is awarded to a student based on need, marks and community involvement. Preference is given to a child, grandchild, niece or nephew of an active member of the Cowichan Area Council – Beta Sigma Phi (who meets our required criteria). A cheque is issued when we receive proof of acceptance at a chosen post-secondary institution. The institution must be at the same level as indicated on the application.

5. BPO Elks of Lake Cowichan Ron Nielson Memorial Scholarship $500The Elks Scholarship is presented to a student who has a family member that is an Elks member, past or present. Membership affiliation is a priority but not mandatory.A second award of $500 will automatically go to the Lodge’s Lady of the Lake “Miss Elks” from the previous year. She will not have to formally apply..

6. Brock McLeod Memorial Bursary $500Open to graduating student from SD 79 proceeding to an accredited post-secondary institution. Awarded to a student who exhibits critical thinking skills and a love for learning. The award must be used within eighteen months of the recipient being notified of the award.

7. Canadian Federation of University Women Cowichan Valley Scholarship $1000For a mature female student OR a high school student who is a recent graduate of Cowichan Valley School District No. 79; who has resided in the Cowichan Valley for at least one year; who has financial need; who has contributed to the community; who has demonstrated scholastic achievement; who has enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution.

8. Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 5101 $500Candidates must be in the immediate family of a CUPE Member (son, daughter, step-son, step-daughter, grandchild, foster child) in good standing of a Cowichan Valley CUPE member. To be awarded to a graduating student who will be proceeding to post-secondary education (vocational, technical or academic training).

11. Chanon S. Gill Scholarship $400The teachers select this award. However, the academic record will not be used as criteria. The recipient will be a student that demonstrates creativity, ambition, vision, leadership and dedication. (If you apply for this scholarship, indicate in your essay what would make you stand out above other candidates).

12. Cowichan Creamery Agricultural Scholarship Trust SocietyStudents must be continuing their education at a recognized university or college to obtain a degree in a field related to agriculture. Open to all graduating students on Vancouver Island from Ladysmith South. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant who has attended a Canadian school for a minimum of 2 years. Students are able to receive a scholarship/bursary for a total of four years, upon reapplication and acceptance. Number of scholarships/bursaries varies, depending on funds available and number of qualifying applicants.

13. Cowichan Field Hockey Association 2 * $300Awarded to student from public or private school proceeding to post-secondary academic or vocational training at any public institution in North America. The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited high school in the Cowichan Valley. The applicant must have played a minimum of three (3) years with either Cowichan Jr. Field Hockey and/or Cowichan Field Hockey Association.

14. Cowichan Folk Guild Bursary $300Offered to a Cowichan Valley graduating student interested in studying the musical arts. Preference will be given to those applicants who wish to study and pursue a career in the musical folk arts. Applicants must write a 500 -1,000-word essay explaining their interest in music and how they intend to use the bursary.

15. Cowichan Lake Community Forests Cooperative 2 * $1000These awards have different criteria. MUST BE USED WITHIN ONE YEAR. Please indicate which award you are applying for:A: This award is being offered to a student proceeding onto a career in trades or the arts. The successful applicant will be attending formal training for their career choice.

B: This award is being offered to a student proceeding to university or a career in forestry. Students providing proof of application to a post secondary institution will be considered first for this award. (If possible)

16. Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce 2 * $500The Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce (CLDCC) Scholarship will be given to a high school student presently residing in the Cowichan Lake area and attending the Lake Cowichan School and is pursuing a post-secondary education that leads to a business career and demonstrates and entrepreneurial flair. Applicants must be aware of what a Chamber of Commerce is, what does and how it benefits the communities of Cowichan Lake. Recipient must claim by November 2019.

17. Cowichan Spirit of Women Bursary $500This bursary will be awarded to an eligible female graduating student in SD 79 and proceeding to advanced training at: an accredited post-secondary institution in British Columbia to complete studies leading to establishing a career. Student must be an active member of the community and based upon financial need, academic performance and community involvement.

19. Cowichan Valley Division of Family Practice Bursary/Scholarship $500/$1000The purpose of the bursary/scholarship is to assist students in the attainment of higher education where the student's intent is to obtain a medical degree. The scholarship is open to graduating students in the Cowichan Valley Regional District. Criteria to include: students proceeding to a training facility or enrolling in a program that would lead to a medical degree; students involved in extracurricular activities, school/community participation; students of high academic standing with average academic scores of at least 85%.

20. Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association Bursary $500The purpose of this Bursary is to aid hockey player(s) and/or referee(s) within Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association to achieve post-secondary education upon completion of their Grade 12 curriculum.

This bursary is open to all registered members and officials of C.V.M.H.A. Consideration will be given to players/officials who have participated up to the midget level with a minimum of 4 years of minor hockey experience.

The applicant must be attending high school in S.D. &79(Cowichan Valley) or S.D. #68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith).

The applicant’s financial need will be considered, as well as academic performance and good sportsmanship.

The applicant must attend a post-secondary institution within (eighteen) 18 months of graduating from high school. The applicant must show proof of registration acceptance within 18 months of graduation or the Bursary will not be issued. If the recipient chooses not to continue his/her education, the Bursary will be relinquished.

The applicant can apply for both the Scholarship and Bursary from CVMHA but cannot receive both.

The recipient of the Bursary will be selected by a committee acting on behalf of CVMHA, which will not consist of any parent or guardian of any of the applicants.

The committee, at its discretion, may decide not to award the Bursary. If there is more than one applicant that the committee feels deserves, then the Bursary may be reviewed and possibly divided.

The selection made by the committee will be final with no appeals allowed.

21. Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association Scholarship $500The purpose of this Scholarship is to aid hockey player(s) and/or referee(s) within Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association to achieve post-secondary education upon completion of their Grade 12 curriculum.

22. Cowichan Valley Naturalists’ Society $500Students must reside in the Cowichan Valley with the intent of pursuing a course of post secondary studies in the environmental field/sciences.

23. Cowichan Valley Principal and Vice-Principals’ Association Scholarship $500Based on academic record, this award is given to a Lake Cowichan School student proceeding on to Post-Secondary studies. Usually presented to one of the top three students by percentage in the graduating class. School involvement considered as part of the selection process.

24. Cowichan Valley Regional District Area F Scholarship $500To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have proof of residence in the

specific area. Recipients will be seeking vocational, technical or university training.

25. Cowichan Valley Regional District Area I Scholarship $500To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have proof of residence in the specific area. Recipients will be seeking vocational, technical or university training.

26. Cowichan Valley Retired Teachers’ Association(Lloyd Gardner Memorial) Bursary $1000Awarded to School District #79 student who is proceeding to post-secondary education leading to a teaching degree. Student financial need should be indicated. The award shall be paid upon proof of registration in a program leading to a Bachelor of Education.

27. Cowichan Wheels Association 1 *$1000Available to students who have a disability or who are entering a field of study with intention to improve the lives of people with a disability. Bursaries are awarded on merit. Students are expected to forward proof of registration to the Cowichan Wheels Association within 30 days along with receipt of funds. Amount of bursary depends on availability of funds and may vary from year to year.

28. Crofton Community Centre Society VariedThese Bursaries are offered by the Crofton Community Centre Society to graduating students who are residents of Crofton. The Crofton Community Centre Society and an arm of our society, The Crofton Catering Group work together to offer these bursaries. The generosity of our volunteers makes these awards possible. If applying through a local school, their school bursary application and our own CCCS bursary application must be completed. Our application is available through the schools or from our bursary contact below.

29. Darryl Smith Memorial Bursary $100This award is for students active in school, particularly athletics or graduation class executives, and the student must be attending a post-secondary institution. Community volunteering plays a role in selection of candidates.

30. Duncan Basketball Association – The Duffy & Pat Chaster, Ruth Cronk , Jock Gillatt, Scott MacLeod, Joe Scales and Harry Sjoberg Scholarships * $500Open to all graduating students who are proceeding to post-secondary education on any program. Applicants must have, at some time, registered and played a minimum of 3 years in the Duncan Basketball Association.

31. Duncan Daybreak Rotary Club Performing Arts Scholarship 3 * $1000Must be a current graduating student from S.D. #79. Proof of RCM or Canadian Conservatory to Grade 8 level if the student is applying for voice or instrument. Reference from teachers are required. Dance applicants to provide any certificates or levels completed. Theatre students must present a portfolio or their activities – certificates for workshops, acting and auditions done. They must plan to attend University, or equivalent majoring in performing arts with the goal of becoming a performer, or a teacher, of the performing arts. Student should have participated in the Cowichan Valley Music Festival (Theatre Arts perform in the Speech Arts) and for Theatre, must have performed or been actively involved in local theatre on a regular basis or dance applicants performed in the Music Festival and/or theatre productions. Payment of scholarship funds to the successful student will be made upon confirmation of acceptance and registration in an acceptable institute for the performing arts.

32. Evening Optimist Club of Victoria 2* $750Available to students from the Greater Victoria, Sooke, Saanich, or Cowichan School Districts intending to go on to any community college or vocational school in BC in a course of eight months or longer. NON-ACADEMIC APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE. Have passing average and entrance prerequisites for chosen course (not necessarily secondary school graduation). Has given best effort to studies. Good citizen with a clean record. Participates in school activities. Course chosen must not have an automatic subsidy. Demonstrate financial need. Please submit the following: Letter of application indicating need; letter of recommendation from principal, teacher, or school counsellor; current transcript of grades; a brief outline of community or extra-curricular activities.

33. Forest Legacy Scholarship and Bursaries - Municipality of North Cowichan 2 * $6001 * $1200

These awards are available to School District #79 secondary school graduates who reside in the Municipality of North Cowichan. Applicants must be enrolled in a post-secondary science study, i.e.: foresty, environment, fisheries, hydrology, soils, etc.. The applicant is to be enrolled in a 1st year program, pursuing an education through a Technical School, College, or University. The Municipality will award the scholarship and two bursaries directly to the winners upon proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institute. Must complete a North Cowichan Application form and additional requirement..

34. George Alistair MacKay Scholarship $500Student must be resident of Municipality of North Cowichan.

35. George Bonner Middle School Bursary2*$500These bursaries are open to a graduating student of School District No. 79 who has previously attended George Bonner Middle School for a minimum of one (1) year. Proof of attendance is required.

36. Gerald Thom Environmental Studies Bursary $1000This bursary is awarded in the name of Gerald Thom to honour his substantial contributions to ecological restoration, environmental education and advocacy. Applicants for this award must be planning to enroll in post-secondary environmental studies related courses. Preference for this bursary will be given to a Lake Cowichan student who: Has successfully completed the Lake Studies program; has demonstrated commitment and

service to improving or repairing the local environment; has demonstrated a willingness to educate others regarding environmental stewardship.

37. Harris & Company Scholarship $200This Scholarship is available to a Law 11 or 12 student who EXCELS in this course of study. The student must be pursuing his or her post-secondary education at a recognized Institute, College or University. See website for special application.

38. Island Savings 2019 Cowichan and Chemainus Valley’s Art and Sports Scholarships4 * $500

39. Jaswant Singh and Sham Kaur Berar Scholarship $1000These families lived in Lake Cowichan for many years and decided to give back to their hometown community. The Berar family lived in the house near South Shore Motel and later developed their land creating Berar Road and Sall Road near arena. Donors believe in education and supporting small community. This Scholarship is to support a deserving student who not only displays high academics but is a hard-working, dedicated student with plans to attend post-secondary education.

40. John Tuck Community Services Award (Lake Cowichan Lions Club) 3 * $1500This award is sponsored by the Lake Cowichan Lions club members and recognizes a student with exemplary community service. Students applying for this award should be involved in a wide variety of activities at the school and community levels.

41. Jordan Melchior Memorial Trades *250For a student pursuing a career in a trade. Can be used towards courses or textbooks. Financial need will be considered.

42. Kaatza Lakeside Players Society Bursary $500Open to any graduating student from LCS who has academic achievements to qualify them for a scholarship and who pursues post-secondary education in the Arts. Further education in the arts is defined in the criteria information.

43. Ken and Lori Annett Scholarship $1000Must be a graduating student at Lake Cowichan School in School District 79.Must be accepted into and registered as a full-time student in a recognized full first-year program of a degree granting, publicly funded Canadian university in the year the award is made or accepted to a trade foundation program.

44. Ken Long Firemen's Memorial Bursary (Lake Cowichan Fire Department) $600Presented in memory of Ken Long to a student that is related to a current or honorary member, past member, or is a grandchild of LC Fire Dept. If none, children of members at the Caycuse, Youbou, Honeymoon Bay or Mesachie Lake Fire Departments will be considered. Must be pursuing post-secondary education.

45. Lake Cowichan Kinettes’ Bursary *500Open to Lake Cowichan School graduate proceeding to a post-secondary institution for further education or training. Awards to be paid upon proof of tuition deposit paid. Preference will be given to a student with exemplary community service, preferably a student that has assisted with KIN projects.

46. Lake Cowichan Kinsmen Scholarship – Academic 3 * $1000An opportunity for a student with high academic achievement and good community service. Students must be attending post-secondary institutions. VocationalAn opportunity for a person entering the vocational / technical or professional fields. These can be degree and certificate granting programs that run from 10 months to two years in length. (Trades, Tourism Programs, Computers)

47. Lake Cowichan Royal Canadian Legion Scholarship 6 * $500The Legion scholarships are presented to a student who is the child, grandchild or great grandchild of a veteran, Canadian Forces member or a member of or veteran of RCMP or Legion. If no members of the graduating class are related, the scholarship committee will make the selection based on school involvement and volunteering. Applicant must be entering either an academic or vocational program.Note your family military background on the application form.

48. Lake Cowichan School Alumni Scholarship VariesNumber of awards and amounts vary each year. Faculty to award at their discretion.

49. Lake Cowichan Secondary School Parent Advisory Committee Scholarships 2 * $500Up to two awards are presented by the PAC for students entering post-secondary training

with vocational training.

50. Lake Cowichan Teachers Association Scholarship $1000This award is presented to an academic student. The recipient will be determined by averaging their top 3 grade 12 academic courses taken to meet university entrance requirements. English will be one of the 3 courses, and its final mark, including final exam, will be part of the requirements. This award is usually presented at the first student assembly in September. Award is available to student for 2 years beginning the month after graduation.

51. Lake Dance Bursary for the Performing Arts $650The successful applicant for the Lake Dance Bursary, given by her family in memory of Catherine Boeckner, will be a student in need of financial assistance for Post-Secondary Education whose academic goals may include: education in the fields of health sciences, biology and/or environmental sciences, patient care and the performing arts. Preference may be given to former participants in the Lady of the Lake Pageant.

52. Lake Dental Health Centre Bursary $500A bursary for a student who is going on to Post-Secondary Education. The applicant must demonstrate financial need. The Lake Dental Health Clinic selects recipient. Tuition receipt to the College/University is required.

53. Laketown Ranch Benevolent Society Scholarship $1000The Laketown Ranch Benevolent Society Scholarship aims to support Cowichan Valley students as they pursue post-secondary education by providing Scholarships for students of

the Cowichan Valley who will be going on to study in the arts at post secondary institutions. Eligible students may be studying in any area related to the arts.

54. Mid Island Co-op Education Award 1*$10001*$500

The recipient of this scholarship will be a dependant of a Mid Island Co-op member or a member themselves. Students must be enrolling in a recognized university, college or institute of technology. A GPA of 3.0 is desirable although not required. Proof or registration from a post-seconadary institute is required before funds are released. Funds must be claimed within two years of being awarded.

55. Molly Halton Award $500This monetary award is chosen by the staff. The successful applicant will have overcome great adversities. No application necessary.

56. Monk Office Supply $500This award will be presented to a graduating student who will be attending post-secondary education and currently working in the retail trade. Applicant will need to provide a letter from your employer confirming this. Also include letter describing what you’ve learned and what you are passionate about. Please also reflect participation in school and community activities.

57. Oscar & Kristin Palsson Memorial Bursary $500This award is presented to a student with strength in Mathematics or Science who is applying for post-secondary training. Indicate Math and Science performance.

58. Palsson School Scholarship $500Must be a graduating student who attended Palsson or A.B. Greenwell at some time during their Elementary School Years. Scholarship must be claimed within 2 years and student must provide proof of registration and payment at a post-secondary institution.

59. Queen of Angels School Parent Auxiliary Bursary $250Available to a graduating student from a public or private school who has attended Queen of Angels Catholic School for a minimum of four (4) years. A signed declaration indicating year’s applicant attended must accompany the application form.

60. Queen of Angels Catholic School - Robertha Honora Pascoe Memorial Bursary $250Available to a graduating Grade 12 student in the Cowichan Valley, including public and private schools, who completed Grade 9 at Queen of Angels School. The applicant must be proceeding to post-secondary education or training in the year following graduation. The bursary will be awarded to a student who is pursuing a career in literacy or visual arts.

61. Queen of Angels Catholic School - David McKinnon Memorial Bursary $500Available to a graduating Grade 12 student in the Cowichan Valley, including public and private schools, who completed a minimum of 5 years at Q of A. The applicant must be proceeding to post-secondary education or training in the year following graduation. The bursary will be awarded to a student who will be pursuing an education in a business or accounting related field or a trade. The bursary is to be paid to the individual upon proof of

enrolment at a recognized school or institute to further his/her education or training with the discretion of the principal and Mrs. Elizabeth McKinnon. The applicant should state his/her reason for pursuing the choice of career and how it relates to equipping him/her to be of service to the community. The funds will be held in trust and if the recipient has not used the bursary within one year of the award, an extension will be reviewed by the Principal of Queen of Angels School and Mrs. Elizabeth McKinnon upon receipt of request for a possible one year extension.

62. Ram Johal Memorial Bursary $200This bursary will be awarded to an individual who displays leadership, school spirit and school citizenship.

63. Royal Canadian Legion South Vancouver Island Zone Sir Percy Lake Memorial Scholarship $2000To be eligible applicants must be accepted in their first year to the University of Victoria starting in the year the scholarship is presented. The basis of selection is academic excellence and community service. Applicants are point rated using the University of Victoria’s entrance requirements as a guideline.

64. Shane Riggs Memorial Bursary $300An award based on outstanding Citizenship, sports participation and community volunteering.

65. St. Edward’s Catholic Women’s League $500Award of the Bursary will be based upon: Active membership at St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church, Duncan BC; Financial need; Academic Performance; Community and Church involvement.

67. Tom Clark Memorial Bursary *500Available to a SD#79 student graduating in any program and proceeding to a recognized post-secondary institution for further study or training. Preference given to a child or grandchild of a SD79 employee. Financial need will be a factor in selection. Awarded to a student who exhibits a balance of hard work, proven dedication and determination, volunteer work and community involvement. Please provide an autobiographical essay and two letters of reference which demonstrate this. This bursary will be awarded upon proof of enrolment at a recognized post-secondary institution. The award must be used within eighteen months of the recipient being notified of the award.
