Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
To all who sin and need a Savior, to all who are burdened and need rest, to all who sorrow and long
for comfort, to all who struggle and seek victory, to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
and to whosoever will come, Providence Presbyterian Church opens wide her doors and offers

The Adoration Of God
*Call to Worship Psalm 96:1-2 Elder Harold Miller
“Oh Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord,
bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.”
*Prayer of Adoration and Lord’s Prayer Elder Harold Miller
“Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.”

Confession Of Our Need Of Christ And God’s Grace
Corporate Confession of Sin Congregation
“O God, whose chosen dwelling is the heart that longs for Your presence
and humbly seeks Your love, we come to You to acknowledge and
confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not
loved You with all our heart and soul, with all our mind and strength, nor
have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. Deepen within us our sorrow
for the wrong we have done, or for the good we have left undone.
Because You, O Lord, are full of compassion, gracious, slow to anger, and
plentiful in mercy, there is forgiveness with You. Restore to us the joy of
Your salvation, bind up that which is broken, give light to our minds,
strength to our wills and rest to our souls. Speak to each of us the word
that we need, and let Your word abide with us until it has wrought in us
Your holy will. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen. “

according to the riches of His grace.”

The Means Of Grace
Old Testament Scripture Reading 1 Samuel 17: 1-11 Page 239
”A Philistine army moved into the hills of Western Judah, and Saul sent his own army to meet them.
But instead of joining battle, the enemy decided on a fight between champions; such a practice was
not uncommon in ancient warfare. Goliath is mentioned here, his height was about ten feet. His
bodily protection is emphasized as much as the size and weight of the armor and weapons. Even Saul
shies away from such a challenge.”
Congregational Response
Pastor: “This is the word of God.”
Congregation: “Praise be to Thee, O Lord.”
New Testament Scripture Reading 1 Corinthians 16:12-24 Page 962
“This is Paul’s closing of the letter to the Corinthians. In vss 13 and 14 he warns them to be watchful.
This isn’t just a basic vigilance but a reference to the end times events. Christian conduct should be
constantly governed by two factors; one is Christ’s return, the certainty of which should encourage the
Christian to be courageous and strong in facing temptation, persecution and everyday troubles The
other is Christian love. ”

The Session Has Scheduled the Sacrament of Holy Communion
A Means of Grace to be observed on
Sunday Morning April 30, 2017
The scriptures warn us to be diligent in making preparation
before the celebration of Communion.
“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will
be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, and
then so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without
discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” – 1 Cor. 11:27-29
In A Sacramental Catechism by John Williamson (1680-1750), he asks:
What sort of preparation is it that God requires of such that come to His table? It is not a
slack or careless preparation to be done in a hasty and superficial manner, as some do who
never set about it till Saturday or the Lord’s day morning before they commune. No, it must
be timely and deliberately, conscientious and impartial, diligent and fervent in the use of all
appointed means, depending upon God for the gracious preparation of the heart according to
His promise – Ps. 10:17; Prov. 16:1
The Westminster Larger Catechism (Question 171) gives a wonderful and clear
explanation of how we ought to prepare for the observation of this covenantal meal: “They
that receive the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper are, before they come, to prepare
themselves there unto, by examining themselves of their being in Christ, of their sins and
wants; of the truth and measure of their knowledge, faith, repentance; love to God and the
brethren, charity to all men, forgiving those that have done them wrong; of their desires after
Christ, and of their new obedience, and by renewing the exercise of these graces, by serious
meditation and fervent prayer.”
Carefully consider these before your participation:
Reflection on the depth of your love for Christ and the brethren.
Discernment of your own understanding of the Supper.
Meditation on Christ’s death and suffering.
Feeding on Him in faith.
Desire for Christ
There will be a VERY brief opportunity following the service next week to hear about
the plans approved for the coming year. The Session has visited everything from our
Christian Education to our Local Outreach and has approved a number of initiatives to
serve and develop Providence PCA.
As a part of the opportunities are presented, you will be given a talents and interest
card where you can match your gifts to the ministries of the church.
After the presentation we will all go and enjoy our 5th Sunday Agape Meal in the
fellowship hall. Plan to attend!
