Dear Parishioners,
This may be old news to you, but we have a new auxiliary bishop in our archdiocese! Bishop Elect Marc Trudeau has been serving most recently as rector at St. John’s Seminary. Previously he has had numerous assignments, including that as priest secretary to Cardinal Mahony. He is a great guy, a twin, personable and pastoral. He will be ordained a bishop on June 7th at the cathedral. It has not yet been announced as to whether he will be assigned to a pastoral region or to another office downtown. Congratulations to Bishop Elect Marc Trudeau!
You may also have heard that Fr. Mike Perucho (former associate at Holy Family) is leaving his parish in North Hills to serve as Associate Vocation Director with our own Fr. Samuel Ward. Congratulations, Fr. Mike!
What about holiness? I was reading in our archdiocese publication Angeles that
Pope Francis wrote a new apostolic exhortation on “the call to holiness in today’s world.” The title is “Gaudete et Exsultate” (“Rejoice and Be Glad”). Many of us have this vision that holiness consists of folding one’s hands a certain way and praying all day on one’s knees. Nothing could be further from the truth. Holiness comes in many forms. “We are called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves.”
I have not yet read the document, but I understand from the article in Angeles that he writes about “’the saints next door’ and that he likes to contemplate the holiness present in the patience of God’s people: in those parents who raise their children with immense love, in those men and women who work hard to support their families, in the sick, in elderly religious who never lose their smile.”
The path to holiness is a gradual process and consists of prayer, sacrifices and service. “The holiness to which the Lord calls you will grow through small gestures.” He uses the example of a woman who refused to engage in gossip and returns home and patiently listens to her child even though she is exhausted. Later she prays the rosary and offers a kind word to a poor person.
He writes that saints “do not waste energy complaining about the failings of others; they can hold their tongue before the faults of their bothers and sisters, and avoid the verbal violence that demeans and mistreats others.” Now, dear parishioners, I think I need to go to confession!! Let his apostolic exhortation be a lesson to us all!

DID YOU KNOW?
Pray for the healing of abuse victims. Each of us, as members of our Catholic community, can contribute to the healing of those harmed by abuse by re-membering survivors in our prayers: Mindful that Jesus’ resurrection trans-forms all who believe, we as church embrace our shared responsibility to pro-tect our children and youth, and to ensure that they grow up knowing they are safe and loved. In solidarity with those victims who have endured the pain of abuse, we re-dedicate ourselves to their healing by increasing our own aware-ness and understanding, by contributing to the safe environment and practices of our church, and by extending our efforts out into the world. For specific information on how you can make the world a safer place for children and youth please visit: www.archla.org/protecting.

It also provides an opportunity for widows to begin to share their own journeys. Sharon’s powerful story and insightful blogs on her journey as a widow opens up spaces of hope, empowerment and healing for others walking through this difficult journey.
