What you do emerges from who you are. Being precedes doing. At the core of our Christian witness in the world lies the reality of who each of us is in relation to God Himself and in relationship to one another in the new society of God's people—the church. Charles Colson

His authority on earth allows us to dare to go to all the nations. His authority in heaven gives us our only hope of success. And his presence with us gives us no other choice. John Stott

God's commitment to His plan of redemption does not absolve us from our responsibility to obey His commands. God will reach every corner of this world, and He has chosen to accomplish this task by working through His church.

from Multiply Francis Chan

SCRIPTURE READING: Exodus 19:2b-6; 1 Peter 2:9-103There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him

out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and

5brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you 6shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me

a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but

now you have received mercy.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God!

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: All: Lord Jesus, while our mouths sing your praise our hearts are saddened by the knowledge of the inconsistency of our devotion. On the cross you delivered us from the guilt and bondage of sin, bearing us on your outstretched arms. You gave your life for us but we withhold our lives from you. We confess that we want the promise of the life you offer without the experience of the transformation you desire. We want to be called your sons and daughters but don't want to stand out or speak up as your people. We long to be shown mercy but hesitate in showing it to others. Please forgive us for wanting salvation without transformation, redemption without proclamation, and forgiveness without the demonstration of mercy. Holy Spirit, give us the humility to be bold in sharing the gospel and the courage to be gracious in demonstrating it. We ask this all in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: Hebrews 9:11,12; 10:12-14Pastor: When Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. All: When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Pastor: The peace of Christ be with you all. All: And also with you.

DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731)

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

RESPONSE: 735 “Gloria Patri”

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

HYMN: 330 “Holy Ghost, Dispel Our Sadness”

SCRIPTURE: Acts 16:1-51Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish

2woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers at

3Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised 4him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As

they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that 5had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. So the churches were

strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.

SERMON: “On the Road Again” Rev. Jeff Pate

HYMN: 481 “Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus” st. 1, 3

RESPONSIVE READING:Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Pastor: The bread that we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. All: We who are many are one body, for we all share the same loaf. Pastor: The cup for which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ. All: The cup that we drink is our participation in the blood of Christ.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPERRiverwood Presbyterian uses wine in the celebration of Holy Communion. If you would prefer non-alcoholic grape juice, please take a cup from the inner circle of the tray.

1. Facing a task unfinished that drives us to our kneesA need that, undiminished, rebukes our slothful ease

We, who rejoice to know Thee, renew before Thy throneThe solemn pledge we owe Thee to go and make Thee known.

2. Where other lords beside Thee hold their unhindered swayWhere forces that defied Thee defy Thee still today

With none to heed their crying for life, and love, and lightUnnumbered souls are dying and pass into the night.

3. We bear the torch that flaming fell from the hands of thoseWho gave their lives proclaiming that Jesus died and roseOurs is the same commission, the same glad message oursFired by the same ambition, to Thee we yield our powers.

4. O Father who sustained them, O Spirit who inspiredSavior, whose love constrained them to toil with zeal untired

From cowardice defend us, from lethargy awake!Forth on Thine errands send us to labor for Thy sake.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS

Acts 4:5-12; Psalm 23; 1 John 3:16-24; John 10:11-18

BRIDAL GIFT BASKET

There is a gift basket in the foyer for bride-to-be Emily Jones for all who would like to contribute a card or gift card to celebrate her upcoming wedding. The basket will be there through May 20.

BRIDAL SHOWER

Ladies are invited to join us for a bridal shower honoring Rachel McCleskey this Saturday, April 28, at 2:00pm at Kristina Patridge’s home (1231 16th Avenue, 35401).

OFFICER NOMINATIONS

Today begins a three week period in which nominations for potential church officers may be submitted. Nominations are due Sunday, May 13. Please prayerfully consider those God may be calling to serve.

DEACON’S FUND OFFERING

Every month that has a fifth Sunday, our Deacons have an offering to replenish funds in an account used exclusively for mercy ministry needs. This fund has enabled our Diaconate to extend the kingdom of God to many within our community. Next Sunday, April 29, all cash and designated gifts will be used for this purpose.

DINNER ON THE GROUNDS

After church next Sunday, April 29, plan to join your Riverwood family for dinner on the grounds. Each family is asked to bring a stand alone meal that is enough for your family plus extra for sharing. We encourage the use of coolers to keep things cold or hot as refrigerator space is very limited and too many crock pots blow our circuit breakers! The church will provide plates, cups, cutlery, napkins, and ice. Join us as we break bread together.
