Computer Tips

By Jarred Demoret - Network and IT Administration

Some general tips to follow when using the computer………

Windows Update / Windows Defender

(Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 7 & Vista)

Windows Update is a feature imbedded in all current operating systems

released by Microsoft. It is a fundamental part of what keeps your computer

safe from attackers by fixing known security flaws. It is recommended to have

this feature enabled and automatically downloading and installing updates. To

verify this you can find Windows Update in your control panel.

Windows Defender is a utility in Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 that actively

scans your computer for viruses and malware/spyware. It is free and is

integrated with Windows Update so you know your definitions are always up

to date. This functionality can be added into Windows Vista and 7 for free by

downloading Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft website.

Backup Solutions

Backing up your data is critical. Home videos, pictures, and even

documents are very important and often times you don’t realize what you had

until it’s gone. A general rule to live by when protecting your data from

disaster is to adhere to the 3-2-1 backup strategy.

Have at least 3 copies of your data.

Keep these backups on 2 different media types. (Mechanical Hard Disk

Drive (HDD), Solid State HDD, or even physical media such as a CD-R or

DVD-R.

Store 1 of these backups offsite. (In the cloud, at work, etc.)

Common Sense

Remember a little common sense can take you a long way online. Pay

attention to the sites frequented. If something abnormal happens it could

potentially be a phishing scheme. Do not open e-mails or click links in e-mails

from somebody you do not know. Use complex passwords and never use the

same password for multiple sites. If something on your computer tries to

install that you did not initiate, do not allow it to proceed. Be safe and enjoy

surfing the web!
