It’s spring and the endless cold and dreary of this winter has finally yielded to warm weather, chasing away the gloom. But for some, the gloom of winter is a gloom of the soul, a debilitating illness that the sights of spring cannot dispel. For these individu-als, the diagnosis is depression, a serious illness that can be treated.

The April European air crash with a focus on the diagnosis of depression by the co-pilot has brought this disease to the fore-front of our consciousness. This is an excel-lent time for all of us to pay attention to our own mental health. If you have not known someone with a mental health disorder, it may be surprising that so many individu-als suffer from depression and other mental health disorders. For me, my first knowl-edge of someone with a mental health ill-ness was my cousin, who received a mental health diagnosis many years ago.

“I feel depressed!” Most everyone has said that at some time or another. We use the term to mean sad, not happy, a little down and out. But for many individuals, adults and adolescents, depression is more than a brief occurrence. It is a very real, serious clinical disorder that can be treated with positive life changing results.

One of the most common mental illnesses, clinical depression, affects more than 19 million Americans each year. Depression occurs in people of any age, any race or ethnic group. Experts tell us that depression is never a normal part of life. It can cause people to lose pleasure in their daily life and even lead to suicide.

The good news is that depression, and other mental health disorders, are treatable. Treatment for depression includes anti-depressant medication, psychotherapy or a combination. The main thing is to seek treatment.

Symptoms of clinical depression include: persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood; sleeping too much or too little; middle of the night or early morning waking; reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain; or loss of pleasure and interest in activities once enjoyed. Other symptoms include restlessness; irritability; persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment (such as chronic pain or digestive disor-ders); difficulty concentrating, remember-ing or making decisions; fatigue or loss of energy; feeling guilty, hopeless or worth-

less; and thoughts of suicide or death.Experts tell us that having five or more

of these symptoms for two weeks or more could signal clinical depression. Good health includes good mental health.

I have been fortunate to become knowledgeable about mental health issues through our media work with the Cobb Community Services Board (CSB) and other CSBs statewide. The CSBs are lead-ers in diagnosing and treating mental disor-ders. They are the safety net for Georgians who need assistance with mental health care but who may not have the funds or insurance for a private doctor. Yet, in Georgia and throughout our country, the budgets are lean and growing learner to provide for the treatment of mental health disorders.

If you have questions about mental health issues, contact your personal physi-cian, WellStar Behavorial Health Depart-ment at Cobb Hospital’s Outpatient Counseling Services, 470-732-6960 or the Cobb Community Services Board’s Access Center at 770-422-0202.

Mended Hearts volunteers, from left, are Marie Thomas-Stanley; Bill Holland; Sig Cohen; Barbara Cohen and Jim Galluzo.

“We are back” Mended Hearts mem-bers are happy to return as volunteers making visits to cardiac patients at Well-Star Cobb Hospital. We have received a very warm welcome by each department and look forward to working with all that need us. Mended Hearts was started more than 50 years ago and is a nationwide vol-unteer group visiting thousands of patients each year.

To become a Mended Hearts Vol-unteer, we must first have a history of having a heart procedure. This ensures to the patients that we understand and have gone through similar circumstance or that we understand because we have been a caregiver of a heart patient. To say it in a simple way we have walked in their shoes. Second, we must go through WellStar Cobb Hospital Volunteer Services program and be accepted as any other volunteer. Next, we have to be accepted by Mended Hearts. We must make at least three visits with an

accredited Volunteer and be approved by the Mended Hearts Board.

The contact person we work with each day before visiting patients at WellStar Cobb Hospital is Marie Thomas-Stanley, RN, Cardiac Educator. Marie will give us the list of patients to visit that day. There are times when the nurses on the floor may ask us to visit additional patients who they know may need an encouraging word from a Mended Hearts Volunteer. Currently we visit on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. With just four accredited volunteers and two of them already volunteering other days of the week it sometimes makes it hard to cover the three days. As with all volunteer groups, we are always in need of additional volunteers. Should you know of someone who would be an excellent Mended Hearts Volunteer, please have them call Bill Hol-land at 770-846-4833.

Current WellStar Cobb Hospital Mended Hearts Volunteers are Jim Galluzo, Sig and Barbra Cohen and Bill Holland.

WELLSTAR’S ‘MENDED HEARTS’ SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

By Vic ReynoldsCobb District Attorney

As District Attorney it is my goal to insure the safety of the public, hold those who commit crimes accountable, and see that justice in Cobb County is administered fairly, efficiently and cost-effectively. In March 2013, I partnered with other stakehold-ers to establish the Cobb Mental Health Court.

As prosecutors, we see people with untreated mental illness commit crimes involving trespass, petty theft, unlawful entry into buildings and homes, substance abuse, and assault on others. Expe-rience tells us that if this cycle is not broken these individuals will likely spend much of their lives in the criminal-justice system.

The court is designed for persons with a severe and persistent mental illness that has contributed to the commission of a crime. Defendants agree to an 18- to 24-month program that includes intensive counseling, community-based support groups, drug testing, medication compli-ance and weekly court sessions. Partici-pants are encouraged to complete their education and secure stable housing and employment.

Superior Court Judge Mary Staley oversees the team, which includes represen-tatives from the District Attorney’s Office, the Circuit Defender’s Office, court staff,

the Cobb Community Services Board, the Sheriff’s Office, and Probation. Successful participants may avoid a felony conviction or time in prison. If the participant violates program rules or commits new crimes,

however, a traditional sentence is imposed.

The court holds defendants accountable by requiring them to be active in their rehabilita-tion. By returning participants to a stable and productive life, we are also protecting Cobb residents and reducing the financial burden to our court system. The Mental Health Court has 23 participants and expects to host its first gradu-

ation in the fall.Read more about DA Vic Reynolds

LESSONS FROM TONGA DRIVE A CAREERBy Robert Meyring

A threadbare faded white T-shirt with bold tropical images and “Tonga Island Watch” across the back is one of the oldest pieces of clothing I own. It’s a sentimental item that takes me back 20 years to a South Pacific country and a Kingdom called Tonga where I lived during a two year volunteer assignment. It reminds me how my work with the TIW group helped unearth my “knack” for taking concepts and turning them into reality.

In this case, the “concept” was that Tongans would clean up their local neighborhoods and beaches of non-biodegradable trash if given some education and incentives. I helped turn this concept into a reality by drafting bylaws and organizing the TIW group into a legitimate nonprofit organization after becoming the group’s director. The group’s legitimacy as a chari-table organization came with the ability to ask anyone for donations, including spon-sors like Coca-Cola, government agencies, and local residents. Coke pledged $10,000 to the group and sponsored Tonga’s first Earth Day. Tonga’s King officially “recog-nized” the group by proclaiming a national “clean up the beach” day, where all school-children were released from school on a Friday at noon and were sent to the beaches with bags to clean up the plastics, metals and other Trash that would accumulate and not biodegrade.

It felt good to help form and direct a

group that was able to make some differ-ence and effect good change in the local culture, but it was an uphill battle trying to establish the concept of environmen-talism where it had not yet existed in the local culture. It was exciting, new and I

had the help of many enthusiastic fellow group and board members to run the group. When the group’s board came up with projects, the motivated group members would accomplish tasks, hit milestones and make community projects and events come alive. Tonga 20 years ago compares to Hawaii of the 1950s before US Statehood: it is its own island-nation, it has a king, and it also has issues related to rapid development.

Having originally moved to Tonga simply to work at what I enjoyed, it turned out, I found other work I actually loved. I also had the realization that the work I was doing with this TIW group, was the work that lawyers typically do. It was then I real-ized that the rest of my life would involve the acquisition of a bar license and the accomplishment of a legal career focused on helping people, their family and their business. Now, the concept that is made real in my Firm’s delivery of legal services is the Peace of Mind that comes with the effective resolution of legal issues.

I hold onto the fading Tongan T-shirt as a reminder of where I came from and the good things that come from a life in service to others.

Robert Meyring

WHITEFIELD CHESS TEAM PLACES SECOND

Whitefield Academy’s K-3 chess team took second place at the Georgia Chess K-8 State Team Championship on Sat-urday, March 21. The K-3 division in-cluded 24 teams. Pictured are third graders Efetobo Aror, Drew Justice, Walker Paxton, Christian Wiggins, and Archer McBride.

The Whitefield Academy K-3 chess team took second place in their division at the Georgia Chess K-8 State Team Cham-pionship on Saturday, March 21. Seventy teams from across the state of Georgia were invited to compete in the event, based on their finish in the metro-Atlanta quali-fier in February where Whitefield placed first in a field of over 40 schools.

The five-round tournament included 24 teams in the K-3 section. Whitefield won its first round easily with a match score of 5-0, winning on all five boards. In the second round, the team suffered a narrow defeat with two wins and three losses. Rebounding well, the players won every game, moving forward in the next round to accumulate four match points. The team finished with 22 wins in 25 games, four more than any other school. The all-third grade team included Drew Justice and Efe-tobo Aror, who each finished with a perfect 5-0 score, and Walker Paxton, Christian Wiggins, and Archer McBride who each came away with four wins.

The future of cancer treatment is here. And it’s only available at WellStar. WellStar is the only health system in metro Atlanta to offer TomoTherapy® andCyberKnife® for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

TomoTherapyUnlike conventional systems, which allow radiation to be delivered from only a few directions, TomoTherapy rotates in 360 degrees, meaning that treatments can be delivered continuously to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions give physicians more control in how they plan treatments – and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor.

CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery SystemThe CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System involvesno cutting, and for many, can offer a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors. The system is composed of a radiation delivery device, which is mounted on a flexible robotic arm which enables CyberKnife to deliver radiation to tumors anywhere in the body. Its exceptional tracking ability eliminates the need for patients to have stabilizing head frames or limited breathing during treatment.

Patients now have somewhere to turnTumors have nowhere to hide

When setting up his dental practice in Mableton, Dr. Chea Rainford envisioned an office he would enjoy going to that is designed for patient comfort. Vibrant Smiles Family and Cosmetic Dentistry at 5015 Floyd Road, suite 530, has all the amenities with the patient in mind -- com-fortable chairs, a relaxed ambiance and complimentary Wi-Fi, coffee and refresh-ment bar, ceiling mounted LED televisions in every operatory, noise cancellation head-phones, neck pillows and warm blankets for your enjoyment.

“We are confident that you will feel right at home in our office as we welcome all patients as if they were family,” he said.

The Vibrant Smiles office in Mableton has been open for almost two years but Dr. Rainford has seven years’ experience.

Vibrant Smiles provides clear and traditional braces, implant placement and restoration, wisdom teeth removal, and sedation options for patient comfort.

“We incorporate advanced dental tech-nology into our treatment to increase your comfort and our ability to diagnose and treat you,” he said. These include Low Radia-tion Digital X-rays, using 90 percent less radiation; and Nitrous Oxide, or “laughing gas,” to provide patients with a mild form of anxiolysis during dental treatments.

Other services include: • Tooth Colored Restorations: you no

longer need to have a mouth full of metal when you get fillings.

• Picasso Lite® Soft Tissue Laser, a more gentle, and accurate way of removing damaged, excessive or potentially infected gum tissue.

• VELscope® Oral Cancer Detection System: the Velscope aids us in identifying oral cancer.

• STA Single Tooth Anesthesia System®: there is no longer any need to numb your whole mouth and gums with local anesthesia.

• Lumineers®: with no shots and no drilling, Lumineers are virtually pain-free way to get a beautiful smile.

• Intraoral Camera: See inside your mouth just as we do. The camera helps us educate you about what is going on in the mouth and how we can treat you and improve your oral health and your appear-ance.

• Snap on Smile®: an affordable, non-invasive, and completely reversible treat-ment option for stained, chipped, crooked, missing, or spaced teeth.

• ClearCorrect™ Invisible Teeth Align-ment as an alternative to metal braces.

• Iveri In-Office 20 Minute Teeth

before or after school and work. We serve children and adults of all ages, and it is not uncommon for parents and children to come in for appointments at the same time. Patients choose our office because we have their comfort as a top priority.

“We are a one doctor office. Most offices are owned and operated by a large corporation that is mainly concerned about profits and not the patient. Vibrant Smiles is owned and operated by Dr. Rainford so our top priority is the PATIENT and that they are at ease.”

For more information call the office at 678-932-8249.

The creative talents of Floyd Middle School’s Art Program were on display at the Mable House Arts Center in March.

The school celebrated opening night of the students’ art exhibit recently. Lisa Collins, Floyd MS Art Instructor, is excited to share the multicultural presentation with the community.

The artwork on display represents some of the best work from all grade levels completed this year. The students produced masterpieces celebrating cultural connec-tions (African, Mexican, Australian, India, German, etc.). Animal studies is also a major theme in the student work. Students also unveiled the impressive Ekphrastic art criticism writing assignments from semes-ter one.

SOUTH COBB WELCOMES FLEX TRANSIT SERVICE Last week, county commissioners and dignitaries from the Cobb Chamber of Com-merce, Atlanta Regional Commission and Cobb Transit Advisory Board kicked off an exciting new transit option in south Cobb. FLEX service began Monday, March 23, and runs 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Mondays-Fridays. FLEX buses provide curb-to-curb service to riders who make advanced reservations and also transport walk-up riders at des-ignated collection points. As a hybrid service, it offers both convenience and flexibility in connecting riders with their destinations. FLEX is designed to fill gaps in existing fixed-route service. FLEX operates in three “FLEX zones” in South Cobb: in Austell, Powder Springs and along Powder Springs Road. These zones create access to key destinations, like Cobb Hospital, and provide a critical connection to CCT Route 30, which runs from Marietta to the H.E. Holmes MARTA station. It is open to all rid-ers.

Heather Donahue

By Heather Donahue50 shades of gray…Ha…ha…No! I’m not even going to

touch that book/movie here… But, last month, we discussed 50 ways to leave…but what about 50 ways to stay? Those shades of gray in between, together and apart. Let’s be honest…unfortunately, with relationships, we often live in those shades of gray.

So, how to stay together. You’d think a divorce lawyer wouldn’t discuss reconciliation and staying married…but there are ways to stay together and still protect yourself.

Do you constantly fight about finances? You can have a post-nuptial agreement that protects you and your assets (and your spending and saving choices). These agreements are drafted in contemplation of remaining married, not divorcing, and can provide often, much-needed autonomy.

Are you a blended family in need of solidified arrangements? Stepparent adop-tions, recovery of overdue child support and alimony, contempt, modifications, and much more can help to protect you and the many branches of your family tree.

“Staying together for the kids.” We’ve

SHADES OF GRAY IN DIVORCE PROCESSall heard and said this and it’s appropri-ate at times. But, you can stay together for the kids as parents without remaining

married and perhaps miserable. Set the example for your kids of what a strong individual parent and spouse is…sometimes that’s “staying together” or some shade of gray in between. A Parenting Plan and/or a Separation Agreement, considering the unique needs of your family, can provide the perfect shade of gray for your family.

For your “shade of gray” and other family law concerns, contact

Heather at The Merritt Firm, LLC, at 770-433-9345 or [email protected].

FLOYD STUDENTS VISIT CAPITOLStudent leaders from Floyd Middle School take the school’s mission and vision seri-ously: they engage in “Making a Difference” (mission), and serving as part of “a com-munity of actively engaged lifelong learners who are accountable, productive citizens” (vision). The student leaders brought the school’s 2014-15 theme of being “In Pursuit of Excellence” to life as they served as Pages for Rep. David Wilkerson (D-38). It was an exciting day for the students to visit the floor of the State House of Representatives and witness legislation in action. Eighth grade students were able to see first-hand the connections to their study of state government and the legislative branch. From left are Malcom Phillips, David Wilkerson, Jr., Tyree Jackson, Rep. David Wilkerson, Kiara King, Olivia Wilkerson, Brandon Robinson, and George Lester.
