“When

Massiv Flo comes, all other sounds shut down” – Apache Warrior. A quote that is becoming as common and recognized as the crew it describes. This crew of course, being the popular and unorthodox remix power house known as Massiv Flo Sound Crew.

Conceived in the summer of 2004, the Massiv Flo crew is a six member ensemble that has grown to prominence throughout the Caribbean music world. Spear headed by the crew’s leader, Jay Impact, and his cast of talented deejay’s and producers. “Our goal was very simple when Whizz and Randy started. They made good music and rock parties, their way. “We’ll either suck at it, or be great at it, but either way it will be OUR way..” states Jay. That simple guiding principle has propelled Massiv Flo into the world spotlight, and they have certainly proven too be great at what they do.

Their remix and mixtape CD's can be purchased in most local audio outlets, and can be streamed along with their remixes on the crew’s website www.massivflo.com. They have recently begun delving into the world of electronic production, and a rumoured EP containing a multitude of heavy hitting island influenced dance tracks is inching its way to a late 2014 release. The crew hosts two weekly radio shows, #WednesdayNightFlo & #FloFridays, both of which are known to trend regularly on social media sites in Toronto, New York and Florida.

What exactly makes Massiv Flo so popular among both the younger and older generation of music lovers today? Their fans, proudly labeled #teamFLO, describe them as having a different “vibe” music wise and a charming personality as a group. “The Massiv Flo team, they’re just real about what they do, they actually make music catered towards their fans and don’t fit the mold of stereotypical DJs that every West Indian kid

Page 17: April 2014

claims to be...” states Victoria, a Massiv Flo fan from Scarborough. “Everyone loves Massiv Flo man, it’s hard to not be impressed by what these guys can do behind turntables.” says Shawn, another avid Massiv Flo fan from Jersey City. When asked about his crew’s success, Jay had this to say, “I think we’ve gone through the bad and good many times in our journey, and we know there’s much more to come, but we love music, and we love the people that support us, it’s an amazing blessing to be able to share what we do with so many people, and we’re deeply humbled and grateful to have the opportunity to do so. Therefore, that we would just like to say thanks, and that it’s just the beginning.”

For upcoming Deejay’s, the crew had a general consensus on what the best advice is; Strive to be yourself, choose a natural path to being unique, and above all else, stay humble.

It all started when we were at the STC (Scarborough Town Centre) and Deputy Mike Federico from Toronto Police Services said to Kim Fuller, “would you like to have your son’s head shaved for Cancer?” I said “please ask Logan and he will tell you.” Logan looked at me at the age of 5 and said, “Yes! Please Mommy, I want to help people get rid of Cancer.” Kim was so proud of her son and they donated that day $100.00 to this amazing cause. Since the age of 5 Logan has raised more then $5,000.00 for this amazing event known as Cops For Cancer. Logan is now 10 years-old and was the youngest person to shave his head. Logan has now raised $233.00 online and his new goal is $500.00. We could not have made this happen without Toronto Police finest Sgt. Chris Boddy, Deputy Mike Federico, Chief Bill Blair and all the supporters that Logan has had in the last couple of years. We want to

Ranjodh “JDhee” Dheria is a 22 year old R&B vocalist from Brampton, Ontario. JDhee was initially a Hip Hop vocalist, but soon realized his true passion resided in singing. He decided to chase his dreams and ironically enough, produced his very first single called “Dream”. He decided to share his talent within the family and eventually sent the song to Reality Raj. JDhee was unaware that Reality Raj also had a passion for music. From there, Reality Raj decided to record his own lyrics to “Dream”. They soon realized that their talents complimented one another – resulting in the formation of their group “SynSational” – inspired by their older family member Shawn “Syn” Gahunia, CEO of Syn Productionz – a multi-media production company specializing in pre & post audio production.!

! All three of them collectively came together to work on their first smash hit called “Mere Naal”. Their ambition and love for music translated into SynSational releasing music videos on YouTube, where they became a “Syn” sation – pun intended. With a large fan base on YouTube they are recognized across Canada and other parts of the world such as the U.S and UK. SynSational strives to break into the American music industry as the first Indo-Canadian duet.!

The mandate of the See Me Effect (SME) is to promote intergenerational connection while raising awareness on dementia and other issues faced by today’s seniors. !SME is a strong advocate of seeing beyond the ‘label’ of dementia and stereotypes too often attributed to seniors. We promote the individual thriving underneath and capitalize on their strengths and skills to create meaningful connections.

SEE ME EFFECT

Page 44: April 2014

! Through shared activities hosted by SME, seniors and youth learn from one another. Each age group offer a wealth of resources and experiences. Bridging the two generations is vital to enriching lives and preserving history. Seniors are afforded the experience to interact and socialize with high-school youth while engaging in activities that have proven well-being and health benefits. In turn, youth fulfill their required volunteering hours for graduation and are exposed to invaluable lessons from the community’s elders. ! Our work is inspired by the Music & Memory initiative started by the 4Life Foundation (@The4LF), a non-profit organization empowering youth through partnerships with schools, government, and corporate organization. Led by 4Life’s Program Director Joseph Khargie (@JosephKhargie), students from Sir Robert Borden Business and Technical Institute, equipped with iPods and headphones, visit retirement homes in Scarborough twice a month to play personalized music for seniors with dementia. The program was launched at Extendicare Guildwood in Scaborough in 2013 and due to its success has since been introduced at a second retirement home, Chartwell Guildwood. SME hopes to expand the project to other retirement homes across the GTA. !
