I hope all members and their families had a very pleasant and happy Easter. March saw us hold our traditional Calcutta, with approximately 70 members enjoying the evening. We saw some fierce bidding, too, which means the men’s and ladies’ Doubles Knockout teams will be competing for some serious prize-money. The prize pool percentage break-up is as follows: first prize 50%, second prize 25%, third and fourth prizes 5%, with 15% to the club. As ever, Kevin Sanderson conducted the auction, with Lois and her team of helpers looking after the catering. Thank you to all who contributed to such a successful night. The “Building a Better Future” project is moving along steadily. The application for re-zoning is with the Council, and is sched- uled to be tabled at the next meeting. We are also close to having our first drawings of the proposed new clubhouse presented to the clubhouse development committee. The board has been hard at work putting the finishing touches to our strategic plan for the future; once completed, we will be holding an information night for members. The ladies continue to make a major contribution to vol- unteering in the shop, and I extend my thanks for all their hard work and sacrifice of precious time. The shop is now moving to 9-5 winter hours, so there is one fewer 2- hour daily shift, but we are still looking for more volun- teers so that we can spread the load; please help if you can – it is a wonderful way to get to know your club and all its members. We had a most enjoyable fundraising trip to Corowa at the end of the month. Marlene Thompson did a wonder- ful job organizing a really fun day, and Jean Kirkwood ran a riotous raffle of items donated by the ladies. Lady Captain's Report
The atmosphere in the club is really positive and cheerful, with good numbers of ladies playing – especially taking into account that on Tuesdays we have ten members away with pennant.
Pennant results after 4 rounds:
Division 1: square, square, loss 2/3, loss 2/3
Division 2: Loss 1 ½ /3 ½, win 3/2, win 4/1, loss 0/5
We have division 1 pennant competing on our course on Tuesday April 16 and division 4 plays on April 23, with an 8-30 start both days. Our ladies may hit off from the 1
st and
16th after the pennant teams on these two
dates. The pennant finals are on Tuesday April 30, with the venue to be announced.
The Rotary District 9810 Conference Golf Day was held here in March, with the course closed to our 18-hole members. Some dozen of our members saw this as an oppor-tunity to test their skills at Jubilee – with stel-lar results: Aileen Birthisel winning A grade and Marg Martin winning B grade. We were given a warm welcome by Captain Di Mur-phy and her team, and provided with deli-cious sandwiches and cakes.
Our first Monthly Medal, after several false starts, was finally re-scheduled for April 11. Consequently, there will be two monthly medal events in April – and this in turn has meant the postponement of the Foursomes championship to Tuesday October 8.
The Calcutta saw some enthusiastic bidding for the 17 pairs entered in the Doubles Knockout. The first round is to be held on Tuesday May 7, and the second the follow-ing Tuesday. The draw will be made on April 11 after the Monthly Medal so that it can be viewed by members.
Jessie Connors Day is fast approaching – Thursday May 16! Make a diary note!

Irrigation
The irrigation season is almost complete. We will be doing lots of work over the winter months to relocate and replace sprinklers, level all valve boxes and start on the connections required for the proposed redevelopment.
Greens and surrounds
As members are noting, the greens are continu-ing to improve; they will get a light sand dusting in April. Some more shaping of surrounds will occur over the next few weeks as time permits.
Bent grass nursery
So far, there is no discernible difference in any of the trial plots. We will be lifting out turf to replace problem areas on greens; meanwhile the board has given approval for an increase in the size of the nursery to 450m2. This will be the start of our green re-placement program – planning to re-place 2 greens per year.
Fairways
The couch is slowing in growth, and will soon lapse into dormancy. Rick has been spraying pre-emergent to stop winter grass emergence.
Bunkers
20m3 of sand is on its way and will be placed into the 16
th bunkers, with any leftover to go into the
worst remaining bunkers. We are looking to pur-chase our own rotary hoe, with the prospect of rotary hoeing on a regular monthly basis.
Working Bee
The next working bee will be in late May 11 with the object of starting to clean up some of the trees where the new prospective fairways will be.

The pro asked, "Did you guys have a good game today?"
The first old guy said, "Yes, I had three riders today."
The second old guy said, "I had the most riders ever. I had five."
The third old guy said, "I had seven riders, the same as last time."
The last old man said, "I beat my old record. I had 12 riders today."
After they went into the locker room, another golfer who had heard the old guys talking about their game went to the pro and said, "I've been playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all the terminology of the game, but what's a rider?"
The pro said, "A rider is when you hit the ball far enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to it."

GREAT ALPINE CLASSIC BRIGHT - MYRTLEFORD - WANGARATTA
Ten years ago the WGC Committee came up with the concept of a three-day, three-club event aimed at attracting visitors to the north-east region generally, and to the three participating golf clubs specifically: Bright, Myrtleford and Wan-garatta. The event was named the Great Alpine Classic.
Since we had initiated the event, we got the job of organizing its launching. A group of nine was appointed to the task, devising the format, planning the adver-tising, the draws, catering, sponsors, trophies, supporting brochures and all the other detail which such an event demands. All of this was done by hand – there were no computers accessible at that stage.
Now the work is made easier through the usage of the internet and email. Man-agement of data, contact with participants and between the three clubs, the keep-ing of financial records and the like are relatively simple. Our task now is to pre-sent the tournament as an attractive option, and to increase participation. Today there are a number of similar events in the region, most seeking to attract retired or semi-retired golfers, so competition is strong.
In this respect we are fortunate to have a loyal band of sponsors, and in particular our naming sponsor, Win Securities through Tony Ruvolo. Win Securities has held this position from the outset and for every year since – including the 2014 event – a terrific effort which is much appreciated by us all.
Over the years the numbers of entries has varied from 120 to 80. Importantly, the number of clubs represented has steadily grown: this year we had players from 26 different clubs from areas as far apart as Yarrawonga and Mornington - a really extraordinary result. Winners came from those clubs, and from Traralgon, Sandhurst, Commercial Albury, Centenary Park and Queens Park among others.
Prue Dick and Jill Halbwidl won the major prizes at Myrtleford, and Geoff Webster at Wangaratta. Overall winners over the three days were Sandra Bates from Mornington and Ivan Talan from Albury. Sandra sent me a text message after the event thanking all involved, and praising each club for the relaxed, friendly and smoothly run progress of the contest. It was her first win after six consecutive years competing.
Importantly, the club benefited from the event not only through the opportunity of presenting itself as a golfing option in the region – but also in making a profit of approximately $5,000. It was helped in this as ever by the efforts of Lois and Kevin Sanderson in the areas of catering, the acquisition of trophies, advertising and sponsorships. Sincere thanks also to Meliesa Dean for all her input, and to the many others who assisted, including Bright and Myrtleford golf clubs led by Peter Lukey and John Welch respectively.

The end of twilight competition was celebrated on Friday April 5 by 57 members who sat down to a
sumptuous feast presented by Lois Sanderson and helpers. It has been a splendid season, blessed for the most part by beautiful weather and a course in great nick, and the celebration dinner pro-vided a fitting finale.
