Dear Parents and Guardians, This past winter, our teams brought us much for which to be proud. Please join me in congratulating our Wrestling and Swimming Teams on capturing Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 (City) Championships. I would also like to congratulate our Hockey Team for winning the Flyer’s Cup as well as our Basketball Team for a wonderful run in the PIAA State Playoffs. The Hockey and Swimming teams both finished second in the Pennsylvania State Championships. In addition, our actors and musicians provided our community with five hilarious performances of The Drowsy Chaperone. Congratulations to Micky Dominick, Mark Norman, Joe Ciccimaro, Joe Vettori, Michael Hearn, and everyone who assisted with this production. With winter and all the snow finally behind us, our campus is alive with green fields along with the daily practice of students and sports. Spring brings a renewal with flowering plants and the cheers of fans. At the same time, our Competition Band is out and about each weekend winning awards and sharing their marvelous sound. The Speech and Debate team, after recently capturing the Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) District 11 Championship, has their eyes set on the State Championships. Please join me in wishing all of our coaches and teams much success this season. This month, we celebrate Easter – the most important feast of the Christian calendar. After forty days of sacrifice and penance, the Christian community is set to celebrate. Various cultures have different ways to mark this event. For some it may be egg decorating, the planting of seeds for new life, and family gatherings. Regardless, we all celebrate one’s personal salvation. This year, our students will have the week off before the holyday along with the Monday following. Many schools are making this change due to the pressure of AP testing following so closely after the Easter holiday. Please join your sons in marking the days of Holy Week as they have time to reflect upon the Passover, Good Friday, and Easter Morning. Congratulations to all classes that end in a “one” or a “six” as they mark special anniversaries at the Grand Reunion on April 30, 2011. Several hundred alums and their spouses are expected to return to campus that day. The Senior class will join their mothers at one of their rites of passage at the Senior Mother/Son Liturgy on April 27, 2011. This class will mark the 149th Commencement of Explorers and graduation this year will complete the 50th Anniversary of La Salle’s move to our Wyndmoor campus. Wishing you and yours a Happy Easter!

Julia K. Maher Assistant Principal for Student Affairs SpeakUp! Congratulations to Principal Joseph Marchese and Chris Pawlowski ‘12 who received “Jimmy Coins” at SpeakUp! this past month. This honor is given to students, educators and parents who embody the “Spirit of Jimmy”. They make a difference in the lives of others because they are non-judgmental and recognize the goodness and potential in each person they interact with. Each one of them possesses the character traits attributed to Jimmy – resiliency, empathy, humility and loyalty. Student Council Elections 2011-2012 Student Council Elections for 2011 - 2012 will begin in April and conclude by mid May. Students have the opportunity to run for Executive Officers (seniors only), Class Officers, and/or Senators. Fran Johnson Field Day April 29, 2011 For the past six years this event has been a huge success due to the planning and execution done by the Student Council. The enthusiasm of the faculty, staff and the student body for the day has been great. Students are able to “compete” in games of knowledge, dexterity, and athleticism while interacting with faculty and staff that run the events and/or accompany the students around the campus. Two favorites of the students have been the ultimate frisbee and dodge ball – competitions sure to return again this year. The day will end with a final assembly which will feature a tug-of-war between homerooms on each level and the walk/run on the track in memory of Fran Johnson, a teacher/coach who passed away in 2004. Thomas R. Barna Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs Registration and Course Selection Update Aside from the immediate priority of finishing our current academic year strong, planning for next year’s academic start is in full swing. Registration for the 2011-2012 school year is expected to finish up before Easter break begins on Friday, April 15, 2011. When a student finishes submitting his course requests his counselor will review and approve the selections. As soon as a student’s selections are approved, a “parent sign-off sheet” will appear in your son’s Naviance account under the “course requests” heading. This form will serve as a verification of his course requests. The student and his parents should review this document to make sure that the courses listed are those he needs and/or requested for next year. If there are any problems or errors, the student should see his counselor(s) as soon as possible. Returning the signature sheet to La Salle is the responsibility of each student. It will be collected by your son’s counselor. The process will end with you son submitting the sign-off sheet before or on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Students will have until Friday, April 15, 2011, to entertain changes and finalize selections. On a related note, you should know that your son has been educated at length about the course selection process. He should be well aware that all placements are approved by his teachers and reviewed by the respective department leader in that subject area. If you have questions or concerns about placements in World Language (Mrs. Diccicco), Math (Mr. Ponisciak), Science (Mr. Cipolla), or Social Studies (Mr. Miller), please contact the appropriate department chairperson. Other, more specific concerns in placements should be forwarded to the appropriate teacher or counselor. Moving forward, the scheduling of students will take months to complete. It is a complex process since we are attempting to build individualized rosters for nearly 1,100 students. Thus, once a roster is complete and the school year begins, that is the student’s roster. We cannot honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods, or early dismissals (unless supported by compelling educational reasons). Your support of our efforts here is greatly appreciated. The Office of Academic Affairs is planning to mail students their official roster for the 2011-2012 academic during the middle of August.

National Honor Society La Salle’s annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held on Tuesday evening, March 15, 2011. The Office of Academic Affairs is excited to report that107 new members were inducted into the La Salle College High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. Father Anthony Janton ’69 presided at the Eucharist and induction. Personal reflections on the characteristics of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character were presented by the society’s senior officers: Seamus Mooney, Nicholas Frazette, Christopher Dearolf, and Kevin Gillespie. The two Moderators of the National Honor Society are Ms. Tina Shustack and Mrs. Dorothy Marchese. Congratulations gentlemen! Graduation As is the custom at La Salle College High School, we would like to know if there are any graduates of the Class of 2011 who have members of the clergy in their families who would like to participate in the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Friday, June 3, 2011 at Saint Helena’s Church in Blue Bell. Corrections to Semester Honor Roll The March 2011 issue of The Belcroft proudly listed those students who earned our Academic Excellence Award – Honor Roll – during the first semester. Unfortunately, the list was not complete at that time of publication. The Office of Academic Affairs would like to apologize for this error of omission. National Honor Society 107 New Members Inducted

On Tuesday, March 15, 2011, 107 new members were inducted in to the La Salle College High School Chapter of the National Honor Society and join 77 seniors who were inducted last year. These 184 young men have maintained a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.5/4.0, have a record of good conduct, and participate in an acceptable number of extra-curricular activities within the school community as well as the community at large. These students also demonstrate positive qualities and attitudes of responsibility, honesty, reliability, cooperation, and concern for others. If a student is faithful to his obligation as a member of the Society, he receives a permanent certificate of membership upon graduation from La Salle College High School. Awards and Acceptances All seniors who receive a scholarship or grant award from any college, whether or not they intend to enroll or not, must bring a copy of the award letter to the College Counseling Center as soon as it is received. Seniors must follow this procedure in order for their name to appear in the Graduation Program as a scholarship recipient. College Acceptance Process Please encourage your son to thank the teachers who may have written letters of recommendation on his behalf. Please be prepared to register at one college or university by that school’s registration deadline. May 1, 2011 is the date viewed by the collegiate community as the universal reply date for regular admission. You will be required to send an admission and/or housing deposit to confirm your enrollment intentions. Under no circumstances should you enroll at more than one college! After a student has committed to a college, he should write a letter informing all other colleges of his intention to enroll elsewhere. This is an obligation to be taken seriously as it enables other students who may be “wait listed” to move up on that list. Students who are waitlisted who wish to still be considered for admission should speak with their college counselor and email or send the local college representative for La Salle College High School a one page letter letting them know how strongly they wish to attend that particular college. However, something to consider is a recent quote from a college admissions officer talks about colleges not ranking students on their waitlists. Instead, decisions about who will rise to the top are often a function of what admissions offices perceive as “deficiencies” in their upcoming freshman class. There might be, for example, a surplus of aspiring engineers and not enough potential English majors, or too few students from Florida, or there might be an unexpected shortage of oboe players. Final transcripts will be sent by the College Counseling Office to the colleges where your sons are enrolling, so it is important that seniors notify Mrs. O’Connell of their final choice. PACAC As you no doubt have heard, the proposed Pennsylvania budget includes very deep and devastating cuts for both public K-12 education as well as public higher education. Should this proposed budget pass, the consequences for Pennsylvania's students will be dramatic. PACAC stands ready to respond to this budget proposal in several ways. First, we are keeping a close watch on the proceedings and negotiations that have already begun. It is important to remember that this week's proposal is the first step in the process, with hearings and testimony to follow in the coming weeks. I would encourage you to visit the PACAC Facebook page where we are posting updates as we receive them. Staying informed is the first step to taking action. Second, PACAC is exploring ways in which we can support our members on both sides of the desk. Recognizing that it may become more difficult for our members to take advantage of professional development opportunities, PACAC will investigate new technologies and avenues for outreach in order to continue to provide quality, affordable programming. Taking advantage of opportunities for collaboration with other state and regional affiliate ACAC's, researching fee structure models, and identifying strategic priorities in overall programming will help us to be mindful of precious resources while remaining true to our mission and responsibility for service to all of our constituents. Finally, we will continue to be focused on advocacy. On May 16, 2011, PACAC will host the College Access Forum in Harrisburg. I encourage each of you to attend this important advocacy event. Mrs. Mary Kay Mullen and Mr. Gerard Brett from the College Counseling Center will be in attendance and PACAC is fortunate to have an incredibly dedicated and active Government Relations Committee. As the situation evolves over the coming weeks, we’ll work closely together to determine when and how PACAC will formally respond. Watch for information to be sent regarding Action Alerts and by all means, take action! These are interesting times, to say the least as uncertainty and inevitable change can knock us off balance. When we're off balance, we need others around us to make sure none of us falls. That’s what PACAC is all about. Your input is important; not only in Harrisburg, but also in helping PACAC serve you and your students. Let us know how we can help.

Mark Your Calendars Villanova University will host the Main Line College Fair on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the Pavilion on the Villanova Campus. Admission counselors from over three hundred colleges and universities will be present to discuss entrance requirements, curriculum offerings, and financial aid. The event will provide students and their families the opportunity to gather information about colleges and universities from across the country. Check the calendar on our webpage for a list of college fairs, open houses, and information nights. Make every effort to visit campuses while classes are in session to get a realistic view of campus life. Make a reservation online through the college admission websites or call the admissions office. Remember to email the Admission Office after the tour and interview. A list of academic and community service summer programs for sophomores and juniors is available on our College Counseling website under the Pre-College Summer Programs link. Many of these programs take place on college campuses around the world. College Admissions Process With the cost of college education increasing, now is a good time to investigate scholarship programs at www.lschs.org/college at the Scholarship Information link. Parents of juniors are reminded to return to the College Counseling Center the Parent’s Section and Criteria for Selecting Colleges. Juniors are reminded of the importance of thoughtfully completing their homework for Advisory Class. Each assignment is a building block for the next in the college search and application process. The assignments are a step-by-step way of managing the process in an effective way. The syllabus for the College Advisory Classes can be found on the Student Portal. There is a homework assignment that must be completed for

each class and each one will receive a grade. You can view your son’s progress by accessing My Backpack.

An important reminder as the semester progresses that GPA and rigor of curriculum are the two top criteria for admission to college. Spring is the time for renewed motivation and best effort. It is also time to think about asking two teachers, preferably from junior year, to consider writing letters of recommendation for senior year college applications. Remember that writing letters of recommendation is very time-consuming and is a voluntary service on the part of our faculty. Standardized Testing Take advantage of the test preparation module on Naviance. The "La Salle Responds" Program presented a check for $1,500.00 to Saint Francis School in New Mexico on Friday, February 11, 2011. The check presentation took place during a prayer service where the two schools joined each other via Skype video conferencing. The $1,500 donation will help in the creation of a student television station for school announcements. After the presentation, the children of Saint Francis School displayed Thank You cards to La Salle for our generosity.


World Languages Department

Frances Jacob Diccicco Department Chair Service in the Dominican Republic Seniors Seamus Mooney, Charles Cannon, and Sam Hyder accompanied Spanish teacher, Mrs. Fran Jacob Diccicco, on a healthcare mission to the Dominican Republic in early February. The role of the Lasallian team was to act as interpreters for the doctors, dentists, and other healthcare practitioners who volunteered for the ten-day mission. Many of the healthcare participants practice in the Bucks and Montgomery County areas. There is a need for more dentists and eye doctors to participate. Parents in the medical field who would like further information on next year’s mission should contact Mrs. Diccicco. Also, the mission could use eyeglasses, particularly for children. Mrs. Diccicco will accept donations of any eyeglasses for next year’s mission. Photos of the mission can be viewed at Dominican Republic Photos Guest Speakers Several language classes have hosted guest speakers in recent weeks. In early February, Mr. Michael Breen, husband of Spanish teacher Mrs. Lastenia Breen and CEO of Breen Dairy Trading Company, addressed students in the level three Spanish classes about the importance of Spanish in the business world. On February 4, 2011, Roberto Toselli came to La Salle as a guest speaker in Mr. Michael Clemente’s Italian 4 Honors class. Roberto is a retired Professor of Italian who taught at Temple and Villanova Universities. He spoke to our seniors about the importance of speaking Italian outside the classroom, as well as using it in their future professions, whenever possible. Zachary Belinsky, a freshman at American University, spoke to Mr. Coggins’ Spanish 4 Honors class on Monday, March 7, 2011 and gave an after-school presentation on Thursday, March 10, 2011 about his recent trip to Guatemala. Zach and his classmates aimed to better understand past human rights abuses in Guatemala and the current condition of human rights in Central American. His reflections and insights into the languages and culture of Guatemala were very well received. Zach graduated from La Salle in 2010.

National Foreign Language Week The World Language Department celebrated National Foreign Language Week from March 7-11, 2011. Each day a language student led the Morning Prayer in a different language. Participating in this activity were: Seamus Mooney (Spanish), Jason Yoon (French), Stephen Gibbons (Italian), Michael Pham (Latin), and Hannes Bullard-Werner (German). WEXP featured the languages as well. One day the students saw a skit performed in Spanish by Ryan Abbott, Christopher McElroy, Paul Quinn, Christopher Dearolf, Tyler Dunphy, Jeremy Fus, Sam Hyder, and Brian McAloon. Another day Christopher Bell and Shahi Masireddy interviewed two visiting native French students in French. Finally, Italian student Joseph Dooney relayed the news of La Salle’s ice hockey win to the La Salle audience in Italian as part of the WEXP broadcast. Oral Proficiency Contest Eight students participated in the Oral Proficiency Contest sponsored by the Montgomery County Association of Teachers of Foreign Language on March 1, 2011. They included: Dan Spinelli (Spanish 1), James Palmer (Spanish 2H), Matt Franzen (Spanish 3H), Nick Frazzette (AP Spanish), Timothy Model (French 1), Daniel Thomas (French 2), Jack Fillenwarth (French 3), and Chris Bell (French 4H). The contest gave the students an opportunity to be interviewed in the language by native speakers.

Building Bridges of Solidarity Cochabamba, Bolivia Señora Lastenia Breen, a member of La Salle’s Spanish faculty, is asking for your generosity towards the people of Bolivia. They are in need of usable clothing for all age groups, including newborns (no XL or bulky clothing). This past summer, nineteen La Salle students and three faculty members traveled to Bolivia and distributed food and clothing donated by La Salle families to children in hospitals, rural schools, and the poor/working class. They also helped to construct, paint, and repair rural schools. Your assistance is once again needed. Building Bridges of Solidarity will be traveling to Cochabamba, Bolivia in July of 2011 to help the people of Bolivia. Asperger’s Is A Puzzle

by Jo Ann Cohen, Ph.D. “Persons with the syndrome are often workaholics, highly persistent, content with their own company and solitary artistic occupations; they focus on detail with massive curiosity and total immersion; they are novelty-seekers in terms of their art, with massive imagination in their specialized spheres. They are also far less influenced by previous or contemporary artists in their work.” Professor Michael Fitzgerald Trinity College Dublin, Ireland A few years ago, Pete Sigmund, our Chief Information Officer, told me a very interesting story. He was teaching a computer class and one student was able to solve complex mathematical computer problems mentally. Mr. Sigmund’s eyes got larger as he explained that while the class was still entering the data into their calculators, this student would tap his fingers on his temple and then accurately call out answer after answer. “How is this possible? I’ve never seen anything like it in my life!” he said in astonishment. The student had been diagnosed with a learning disability known as Asperger’s. Asperger’s is a neurobiological disorder considered to be part of the Autism Spectrum and classified as a Pervasive Developmental Disorder. When a disorder is part of a spectrum, there are significant variations in symptoms between individuals diagnosed with the syndrome. While individuals diagnosed with Autism are usually low functioning, individuals with Asperger’s are often very high functioning and can have specific areas where they function as savants. There are numerous examples: Stephen Wiltshire, a British subject can study the aerial view of a city for five minutes and then draw it with uncanny precision noting elaborate, complicated, architectural details; Mozart, who, even as a child, could remember entire works of music note for note after hearing them one time; Michaelangelo, an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer who was so incredibly talented that he is often considered the ideal Renaissance Man; Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, phonograph, and motion picture camera, whose mother was very supportive of his learning difficulties and homeschooled him to help avoid the bullying he endured as a child; Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States; and, of course, Albert Einstein. In fact, many well-known inventors, discoverers, composers, and fine artists are believed to have had Asperger’s Disorder. These individuals have gifted us with everything from art to technology; yet, there are areas where they struggled enormously. While limitations vary from person to person, the majority of people diagnosed with Asperger’s are extremely shy and appear socially awkward. Social difficulties are so profound, that Asperger’s patients are thought to have a social disorder. In spite of their superior verbal ability, Asperger’s individuals tend to have difficulty communicating. They have trouble with organization and struggle with both fine and gross motor movement. Sometimes they have idiosyncratic problems. April is National Autism Awareness Month. This is very important, because many people do not understand the disorder. People often misinterpret social awkwardness as a sign of lower intelligence. Can you imagine suggesting that Thomas Jefferson or Albert Einstein were not intelligent? Asperger's can affect people of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds; however, it is three to four times more common among males. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of individuals diagnosed with this disorder. While increased awareness may be responsible for part of this increase, it is not the sole reason. This leads professionals and parents to continue to ask the question, “What causes the syndromes known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders?” Unfortunately, no one knows the answer, but many possible causes are being researched. On April 15, 2011, the Phillies are hosting National Autism Awareness Night. The organization is donating a portion of the funds from that evening to the National Autism Society. Join us as we support our Philadelphia team and provide the public with a better understanding of Autism.

Practical ideas for parents to help their children. Involvement makes a real difference! Study after study has shown that your involvement in your son’s education has a huge effect, from preschool through high school – and beyond! Working with the school shows your son that:

• Education is important to you. • You support the efforts his school makes. • You want to make the school a great place to

be. After all, your son spends almost as much time at school as he does at home.

As the year winds down, make sure your involvement doesn't slack off. Here's how:

• Continue to keep an eye on your son’s progress.

• Encourage your son to get help before the final exam if his grades start to slip.

• Try to attend a meeting of one or both of the parent organizations.

It's just as simple as that. Reading, like anything else, is a skill – and it gets better with practice, but today's teens often don't (or won't) take the time to practice their reading skills. Here are ways to encourage your teen to read more so that he also reads better: Focus on quantity, not quality. Sure, it would be great if he wanted to read all the Greek myths, but if it's the latest story about one of his favorite baseball players instead, don't worry. Keep lots of reading material handy. Get magazines, comic books or how-to books on things that interest him.

Cut out an article you think he might enjoy. Give it to him and then discuss it with him later or read a book he's reading and then talk about it. Try nonfiction. Some boys just don't enjoy reading fiction, so look for nonfiction articles on topics that might interest him – anything from outer space to outdoor activities. Try humor. Boys enjoy reading things that are funny. Their sense of humor may not be the same as yours, but if they are motivated to keep reading, humor can be a great thing! Should you be “friends” with your son online? According to the Pew Internet Project, more than half of all teens use social networking sites. Answer yes or no to the following questions to find out if your son is safe online: ___1. Do you know if your son is a member of a social network? (If you don't, try a Google search of your son’s name.) ___2. Have you learned about the privacy settings on social networks? Help your son decide what parts of the information he shares online should be made public. ___3. Have you reminded your son to be careful about what images he puts online? A picture on the Internet never goes away. ___4. Have you told your son that if he isn't friends with a person in the "real world," he shouldn't be friends with him online? ___5. Do you have rules about using social networking sites? How well are you doing? Mostly yes answers mean you are protecting your son online. For no answers, try those ideas in the quiz.


Teach your son the responsibility of saying “no”. Get good grades. Go to practice. Don't miss that meeting. Go to work. Spend time with your friends. Spend time with your family. And don't forget about your chores! Teenagers have a lot of responsibilities on their plates! It's important to talk to your son about being responsible. Part of being responsible is fulfilling all of your commitments. Another part is being able to say no when you absolutely can't handle anything else. Teens often think that taking on as many commitments as possible is a great way to prove that they are responsible; however, in reality, they end up overloading themselves and not giving their all in any activity. They may be doing a lot of things, but probably aren't doing any of them really well. Responsibility isn't just about showing up for a commitment – it’s also doing your job to the best of your ability. If this sounds like your son, sit down with him and make a list of all of his responsibilities, then work together to rank the items. Put things he "must do" at the top, and things he "doesn't really need to do" at the bottom. Encourage him to star or highlight his favorite activities. Over the summer, when your son has more free time, he can think about which activities he'd like to eliminate next year. Help him realize that sometimes saying, "I'm sorry, I just don't have time to help you with that," is the most responsible act after all. Just make sure he realizes this doesn't apply to his chores! Studies show nighttime texting can lead to learning problems. A recent study found a link between nighttime texting and poorer sleep at night. It found that children who sent texts before going to bed experienced poorer quality of sleep at night. These “evening texters” were also at a higher risk for daytime issues such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, and learning difficulties. The research suggests that rather than relaxing before bed, these children keep their minds stimulated right until they close their eyes. This contributes to being unable to fall asleep and moving around a lot while asleep. They're also more likely to be woken up in the

middle of the night by that beeping or buzzing phone. Participants in the study sent an average of thirty-four texts a night! A sleepy student isn't going to get as much out of school as an alert one. So how can you make sure your son isn't falling prey to nighttime texting? Keep the phone out of your son’s room at night. He might protest that he needs to use it as an alarm clock. Remind him that "old-fashioned" alarm clocks have been waking people up for years and make sure that his still works. Talk to your son about why he sends these nighttime notes or why he wants to be available to receive them. What can't they wait until morning? Use the media to teach your son about consequences. Most teens simply aren't very good at planning ahead. It's not until they get to the party that they realize there will be alcohol there. So it's important to find ways to help teens think ahead. You can use the media – TV, newspapers, magazines – to teach your son to think about consequences. And you can do it in a way that also helps him develop self-respect. Look for stories that highlight poor life choices. (You won't have to look far.) When athletes or TV stars get in trouble, raise the topic with your son. It's likely that one of you will say, "You could see that coming." That's a perfect opening. What was this person doing that led to this bad consequence? What might have happened if the person had made different choices? How will this choice affect the person's life in the future? Talking about other people's bad decisions offers a little distance – and some perspective. It's a great way for your son to think about what he might do before a similar situation arises. Last year this collection was very successful and La Salle Academy was deeply grateful to our school community. If you have any questions, please contact: Mike Happ [email protected] Saint Vincent’s Roman Catholic Church Volunteer Opportunity From now until the end of the school year on all Saturday and Sundays, the Men of La Salle will be providing services to Saint Vincent’s Dining Room, the soup kitchen on 109 East Price Street in Philadelphia. Each weekend between 9:30 and 11:30 am, fathers and sons are asked to volunteer for food preparation in the kitchen, preparing meals for over two hundred men and women who are served lunch. We also need volunteers to serve lunch from 12:30 to 2:30 pm the last Sunday of each month. The Men of La Salle have a long history of serving the less fortunate at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. It is a great experience for you to share with your son and it does not require a significant time commitment.

Celebration for Joe Marchese May 22, 2011 10:00 am The Alumni Association, Mothers’ Club, and the Men of La Salle are hosting a Mass and complimentary reception for parents and families to celebrate Principal Joseph Marchese’s years of service to La Salle. Mass will begin at 10:00am at La Salle College High School, with a light fare reception following from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

A Taste Of The Big Apple On Monday, March 21, 2011, thirty-two juniors and six members of the faculty and staff from La Salle College High School converged upon New York City to meet with alumni and gain valuable insight into a variety of career paths. The primary focus of the trip was to acquaint students with the wide range of opportunities offered by New York’s renowned universities, businesses and institutions, and featured visits to the Public Theater, United States District Court, New York Stock Exchange, NBC Studios, ABC News, Madison Square Garden, and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The day began at the New York Public Theater on Lafayette Street in Greenwich Village, where the students met with eight La Salle alumni, who spoke about their various career and educational paths. Following the presentations, the students were divided into four based on their interests – law, finance, sports/entertainment, and media – and visited various sites directly relating to that profession. The day concluded with a private tour of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.

Spring training for major league baseball is upon us and the Men of La Salle have already secured our date for the annual Father & Son baseball trip to Camden Yards in Baltimore. This annual event is one of the most popular events on the school calendar as it provides you with the opportunity to spend a unique day with your son regardless of whether you are a baseball fan or not.

This event is also meant to include grandfathers, uncles, cousins and those boys who may not have a father (we will not exclude any mothers that may be interested).

Sunday, April 10, 2011The Orioles will be hosting the Texas Rangers!

$70.00 per person (considered a premium game), includes ticket and transportation.Game time is 1:30pm and the day will begin at LaSalle with a Mass in the gym at 9:00am. Buses will leave the school parking lot at 10:00am sharp to provide enough time before the game to explore the stadium and collect batting practice balls hit into our section. Seats are in the sunny lower boxes along the left field foul line.After the game, time will be allotted to venture over to the Inner Harbor for a bite to eat and other entertainment. Buses will leave from the Aquarium exactly at 7:00pm.

Art Department

Michael Hearn Barbara Miller La Salle’s Fine Arts Department Studio Arts Program is looking forward to a highly productive, energetic, and busy spring semester. There are a number of upcoming exhibitions. Our students’ works in ceramics, drawing, painting, and sculpture will be entered into these events, and of course, will also be highlighted in our own annual student art exhibit here at La Salle on May 16, 2011. Montgomery County High School Exhibition and Competition The 33rd Annual Montgomery County Invitational High School Exhibition and Competition closed on March 27, 2011. If you pass the college or can make a trip to see the work, I’m sure you will be impressed by the quality of all the high schools involved. La Salle College High School submitted the work of nine students. Three students received certificates of excellence awards. The work is juried by the faculty of MCCC and over one hundred and fifty pieces were submitted. Second Best Congratulations to David Speese '12, who won the 100M Breaststroke at the PIAA State Championships in Swimming. The 200M Medley Relay Team of Joe Maginnis ’13, David Speese ’11, Luke Maguire ’12, and Eric Schultz ’12 also took first place. La Salle finished second to Hershey in the team competition. The Hockey team needed overtime to defeat Malvern Prep by a score of 3-2 to win their third Flyer’s Cup in four years. Three weeks later, they lost in overtime by a score of 4-3 to Upper St. Clair High School in the Pennsylvania State Championship Game.
