Gossip from the Grill
Bob’s BabblingsMessage from the Manager
April is a busy month for the Ambassador Club. MIX-IT-UP is scheduled for April 7th. It is an event for all new members to meet the heads of the various departments at Eldorado and become familiar with what is available for them at the club. Representatives from the various clubs within the club will be in attendance to explain the purpose of their club and sign up new members. April 25th is the BE MY GUEST CLASSIC golf tournament for new members and their guests. Both the mix-it-up and the golf tournament are intended to get new prospects for membership by invitation in Eldorado.
By now you are probably wondering why the events are for new members and what are you doing for the old members. The data that the Palmer Group has gathered indicates that 70% of new member referrals come from new members and if we are to achieve the trigger level to spend our Capital Fund we need more members.
Now for all members we have the monthly Martinis with the Manager and this month it is scheduled for April 16th and the theme is “Disco”. We look forward to seeing many of you there and to see how the Disco theme is played out. This month we would like to introduce you to another new ambassador team, Todd and Wendy Hall. They moved to McKinney as a couple in 2000 and joined Eldorado in August of 2007. They have been married for almost 9 years and have two children. Makenzie (6 years) and Tristan (16 months). Todd grew up in McKinney and worked at Eldorado when he was in high school. He is in SAP
software sales and Wendy is a stay at home mom. Since becoming members they have enjoyed meeting new people and all the amazing activities that ECC offers. Say hi when you see them around the club.
Two different subjects this time: First, we will all get more out of our memberships if we are not afraid to try something new. Our club offers so many activities and continues to add new ones each month. Likewise, our “new” Chef Eddie has expanded our menu choices and offers some really great specials on Wednesday evenings. I took my own advice, took a Tuesday off from work and played with the SMGA group
for the first time. It was a blast and I am looking forward to playing with them every week from now on. Have you tried out one of the many organizations or clubs or activities that are “new” to you? Check out our calendar (new menu, too) and give it a try. Expand your horizons. Second, timing is everything. As our membership roles expands and members participate in more/new activities, there will be times when the club is crowded (Yeah!), or the kitchen is busy, or the tennis courts are all reserved, or the golf course is full. These are good problems to have. A full membership that is actively using the club facilities will lead to expansion of the club’s staff and capabilities. But there will be times when we need to be flexible in our use of the club. For instance, you can get instant service and quick food on Wednesday evenings if you don’t want a 7:00 PM reservation. If you insist on 7, you will wait. Weekend tee times are always available if you are a little flexible on exactly when you want to go. But as we get busier, it is important to make your reservations and tee times as early as possible for those times when the club is busy.
See you around the club.

Daylight Savings Time started a little early this year and I am happy to say many of our members are taking advantage of the time change. I hope you have had an opportunity to try some of the new items on the Spring Menu. We are implementing a Saturday Shrimp and Oyster night starting in April.
If you have not made reservations for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Saturday, April 11 or Easter Brunch, Sunday, April 12 please do so quickly. There is limited space and these two usually sell out early. We have scheduled a “Date Night” on Saturday, April 25, mark your calendars this will be the last date night until the fall.
The Eldorado Lake Sediment Removal Project being done by the City of McKinney has been halted due to the contractor, Turner Environmental Inc., abandoning the work site.
They are no longer working on the project and the City of McKinney requires that a contractor has a performance bond from a surety company in place which guarantees the satisfactory completion of the project. The City of McKinney will be working with the surety company to insure the project’s completion. The club is working closely with the city to insure the completion of the project as soon as possible. We do not have any timelines to the completion, but the contractor was fairly close to completing the job and we look forward to reaping the rewards of the project soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Heading into April it is a very busy time in the golf course maintenance department. The grass should all have broken dormancy by now and though it may not be growing at capacity due to soil temperatures, it is still green and much more pleasing to the eye than dormant turf. The soil temperatures should reach optimum between the middle and end of the month. Soil temperature is the main signal that turfgrass uses tell when to grow and when to conserve its energy. The majority of warm season
grass; which our Bermudagrass falls into, the window between seventy and ninety degrees Fahrenheit provides the best growing conditions. When soil temperatures are above this range the plant will slow its growth and expend energy to protect itself by storing carbohydrates in the roots to use when the soil temperature returns to optimal growing conditions. When temperatures fall below seventy degrees the plant does the same thing until it gets cold enough to go into dormancy. Keep this in mind throughout the month as the grass may be green but may not be growing at full potential.During the month of April we will begin vertical mowing the green in conjunction with our weekly topdressings to help control the thatch layer in the.The majority of the time this will take place on Mondays while we are closed. However there will be times that we must do this on other days during the week. These two cultural practices along with core aerification are the best ways to control thatch in our greens. Your understanding is appreciated while we perform these much needed tasks.Thank you for being a member.
You can’t beat our prices Do you agree that golf is an expensive sport? Do you also agree that over the years golf equipment has become more costly? I think you deserve a break on what you pay for golf equipment and Eldorado should be able to provide that for you. We have instituted a new pricing structure on all of our golf merchandise allowing us to offer you the most competitive prices on all your golf equipment and apparel needs. “Palmer Pricing” is one of the many benefits of being an Eldorado Member. April Showers… The rainy season is upon us so let’s take advantage of the good days and play some tennis.I want to thank the boys for letting me tinker with the league format and I believe it to be a refreshing change; mixing up the levels and playing some competitive tennis has been fun for all. The format allows for players to play many levels and compete for top court in a shootout format. The pros are playing to add some variety and help balance the courts and their time is an added value for the same price! Can’t beat that! Be sure to thank Jake for his continued good work and effort on the men’s league.
I want to congratulate Katherine Knauf for qualifying for Championship rank at the Plano Spring Break ZAT. She made it to the finals of the last 2 ZAT tournaments and she played hard to qualify for the middle rank in Texas. Way to go Kat!
TCD is in full swing and our ladies teams have been racking up the points. At the time of this article our ladies were hitting on all cylinders having been 2nd, 3rd, and 5th, in their respective flights. Way to go
ladies…keep up the good work!
I also want to thank the membership for their help with the March 28th 29th DPTA junior tourney. This tourney takes up the courts, but is a great way to outreach with the community and give back by donating the courts for a good event and junior tennis. Remember that there is one more junior tourney on Saturday June 13th.
