My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there
and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

From Palm Sunday ….
This year for Lent, the Art and Environment Ministry invited all SJE pa-
rishioners to join in a Parish Lenten journey….together we all wrote reflec-tions/thoughts/actions/intentions on strips of paper….those strips were
joined by forming paper chains….linking ourselves to one another through-out this Lent and connecting us as a parish family. Those chain links then brought us through the 40 days of Lent and repentance to the true joy and
hope of the EASTER CROSS OF THE RESUR-RECTION! As we find ourselves in the middle of
a pandemic, our SJE paper chain Easter cross is all the more meaningful! Even though we can’t be
together physically, we are all spiritually connect-ed, giving one another hope, peace and love! We are not alone!
Our Lenten journey has ended….we have now been united in our prayers and needs from Lent
and through the Easter season! Let us now celebrate the resurrection together as a parish family….all joined together through our faith and hope in Jesus
Christ our Savior.
...to Easter Sunday!
On Palm Sunday, we asked parishioners to pace a branch on their front door and send us a picture! Whether palm or evergreen or some other plant, we remembered the journey of
Jesus into Jerusalem and our entrance into Holy Week!

From the Pastor’s Desk Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday
Blood and Water Dear Parish Family: Today as we conclude the Octave of Easter on the Second Sunday, we have been called by Pope
Saint John Paul II celebrate Divine Mercy on this day. So many of you tell me of your great devotion to the Chaplet and to St. Faustina and to the image of Divine Mercy. In this Sunday’s Gospel, the theme of
mercy is right there. The first thing the risen and glorified Christ is concerned about is forgiveness - “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are re-
tained” (John 19:22-23). We pray for that mercy for ourselves, for those we love and for those who have gone before us. (If you’re not familiar with the Divine Mercy Chaplet, there is a brief explanation on page 12. Bishop Barres has also written a letter for this Divine Mercy Sunday which can accessed by
visiting www.drvc.org.) The image of the Divine Mercy (on the front cover of this week’s bulletin) shows a Jesus of com-
passion looking at us with two rays—a pale red and a pale white—come from this heart. It draws us to the Passion of St. John (John 19:34) proclaimed on Good Friday when the Divine Mercy Novena tradi-
tionally begins. I would like to use the images of the two rays and invite each of you to reach out in the days ahead.
Blood— “The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls…” (Diary of St. Faustina, 299).
The wounded Jesus came to the disciples in the locked room. Not only do we understand the blood
that flowed from his side as he was taken down from the cross, we also the see the bloody wounds, the “marks”, that remain. We are in a wounded time. You and I know this each day. It is not only a physi-
cal woundedness (COVID-19) but a spiritual, emotional and mental woundedness too. Remember, though, the blood on the Cross transforms death. It brings us to new life. I want to ask you to consider doing something in these days of physical illness. Can you consider-
ing donating blood? I am only sharing this next part because I want you to do this. I just returned from donating my plasma at the Long Island
Blood Services Center in Port Jefferson. It was too soon for me to donate blood because I donated at our parish’s last blood drive. It took about an
hour and a half. You can donate platelets, plasma or blood. Those who I met were grateful I came (they didn’t know who I was) and grateful for the donation. Would you be willing, in some way, to pour out, to donate
your blood to save the life of another if you are able? You can visit here for more information—nybloodcenter.org.
Water— “The pale ray stand for the Water which makes soul righteous…” (Diary of St. Faustina, 299).
We focus on the gift of water in the days of Easter. At most Masses, we would be sprinkled with
holy water at our Easter masses. It is a reminder of our own baptism. Remember, the Lenten journey calls us to become more fully aware of our baptismal call.
I hope you have signed up to have your house blessed during the days of Easter. It is one way for us to remember the importance of water, the symbol of our baptisms. We are working to schedule all of
the visits now so please sign up today. Call the Rectory at 631.878.0009 or e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected] or click here—https://forms.gle/wGvR2CwGAJDbvcHq7 if viewing the bulletin
online. Find out more on page 6 of today’s bulletin. Fr. Michael, Fr. Felix and I cannot wait to see you, pray with you and visit you! (Good news—we’re staying outside so your house can be a mess. Don’t worry! No need to clean up because company is coming.)
Please continue to reach out if there is anything we can do for you! In these days of Easter, let us continue to pray for one another!

SEEDS OF EASTER HOPE!

St. John the Evangelist www.sjecm.org Page 8
As we go through these days of Lent and Easter, we feel the absence of the sac-raments – especially our communal celebration of the Eucharist. So many of us
long for the Sacrament of Penance too! As one mom said to me, “After this week of living with my family, I’ll be in confession for hours!” During these
days of social distancing, regularly scheduled confessions, drive thru confes-sions, etc. are not permitted. Confessions can also not be heard via a cell phone
(even at a distance or from your home). These are tough times, indeed. Can I share with you the words of Pope Francis (20 March 2020) building on the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “I know that many of you go to confession before Easter… Many will say to me: ‘But Fa-ther…I can't leave the house and I want to make my peace with the Lord. I want Him to
embrace me… How can I do that unless I find a priest?’. Do what the catechism says. It's very clear. If you don't find a priest to go to confession, speak to God. He's your Father. Tell Him the truth: ‘Lord. I did this and this and this. Pardon me.’ Ask His forgiveness with all your heart with an act of contrition, and promise Him, ‘afterward I will go to confession.’ You will return to God's grace immediately. You yourself can draw near, as
the catechism teaches us, to God's forgiveness, without having a priest at hand.”
Furthermore, the Apostolic Penitentiary released to following note in March: Where the individual faithful find themselves in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect contrition, coming from the love of God, beloved above all things, expressed by a sincere request for forgiveness (that which the penitent is at present able to express) and accompanied by votum confes-
sionis, that is, by the firm resolution to have recourse, as soon as possible, to sacramental confession, obtains for-giveness of sins, even mortal ones (cf. CCC, no. 1452).
Can you and I try find some peace in these days from the words of the Holy Father and the Catechism of
the Catholic Church (1451-52)? IN NO WAY DOES THIS TAKE AWAY
OUR NEED (including mine) FOR SACRAMENTAL CONFESSION.
Let’s pray for God’s mercy in these days and as soon as we possibly can pre-pare to celebrate the sacraments regularly again – especially for that mom!
P.S. If there is a case of emergency and necessity for the sacrament of Con-
fession, please reach out to the parish – 631.878.0009 and one of our priests will return your call as quickly as we can.
CONFESSIONS DURING EASTER

for someone at Mass during these
days of the live stream Mass and our
adjusted schedule. The answer is,
YES! All you need to do is contact Maria Sikora at 631.878.0009 or
email to [email protected]. She will work with you to set the proper

Dear Parish Family: I want to let you know about the passing of Fr. Paul Dahm. Fr. Dahm
served at SJE in the 1970s. He served at other parishes and spent a large of priesthood out here in the east. He was also the chaplain at Good Samaritan
Hospital. When he formally retired, he maintained the title, “Actively Re-tired” and served in many parishes over those years on the east end.
I had many encounters with him connecting to the hospital in West Islip. He was one of the “good guys”!
In these days,, even for priests, funerals are not being held. When we learn
about a memorial Mass for Fr. Paul, I will let you know.

PRAYING AT HOME...With the Church!
PRAYING FOR ONE ANOTHER IN THESE DAYS Each day we ring the church bells at certain hours. They are a call to prayer for different groups of people impacted by the pandemic. Whether you can hear the bells or not, please consider taking a
minute to stop and pray each day.
9 a.m. - Prayer for those infected with the virus and all who are ill Lord, place your healing hand on those who suffer illness. Bring them to full health and ease their
anxious hearts. May our prayer and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary encourage them that they are not alone. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN
12 p.m. - Prayer for health care workers and those attending to the sick Lord, we are ennobled by those who put their lives at risk in caring for the sick. Keep them safe and
embolden them when they are weary. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN
3 p.m. - Prayer for first responders and essential workers Lord, we pray for those who run to danger to keep us safe and those who serve the common good. Em-brace them with your mantle of protection and comfort the fears of their families. We ask this in Je-
sus’ Name. AMEN
6 p.m. - Prayer for people of every nation and their leaders Lord, the pandemic opens our eyes to see each other as brothers and sisters in one human family. We
pray for people of every nation and their leaders, asking that they be inspired to seek the good of all and quell the voices of division. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN
9 p.m. - Prayer for those who have died today Lord, we grieve the passing of our sisters and brothers who have died this day. We commend them to
your tender mercy, confident that nothing, not even death, will separate us from your love. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN.
Chaplet of the Divine Mercy In her years in the convent, St. Faustina heard a call from God to make God’s mercy known to the world so that the world may more fully receive God’s healing grace. St. Faustina promoted the Chaplet of Divine Mercy which consists of the recitation of prayers to the Eternal Father with the use of the rosary for the sake of Christ’s sorrowful passion. As we approach Divine Mercy Sunday, all are encouraged to pray the chapelt. The Chaplet is traditionally prayed at 3 p.m. each day, marking the hour of Jesus’ death on the cross, but can be prayed at any time. The Chaplet is prayed as follows:
1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Apostles’ Creed. 2. On the Our Father beads, recite the following: “Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.”
3. On the ten Hail Mary beads, say the following: “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”
4. Repeat step two and three for all five decades. 5. Conclude by reciting three times:
“Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Last Weekend (Easter Sunday—as of 4/15/20)
Because of our deadlines, the totals for the Easter collection
will be included in next week’s bulletin. I am sorry for the
delay. Fr. John
Please continue to support SJE in these difficult days if you are able. Make your
donation on line: https://stjohntheevangelistcm.weshareonline.org/
or mail your envelopes to the parish office.
You can also text SJECM to 555-888.
PASCHAL CANDLE
The Paschal Candle we have now has served as an incredible reminder of the light that shines through the darkness. At the Easter Vigil this year, we
will prepare a new Paschal Candle. Because of our increased use of Seton Chapel we also purchase a smaller Paschal Candle for this space.
Both candles will burn throughout the Easter season and for all baptisms and funerals, when they resume. It is a sign of the “Light of
Christ” that shatters the darkness of our world. Our new candles are handmade from beeswax and will be a beautiful sign of Easter light
and hope. Because it is beeswax and handmade, it is expensive.
A nice tradition has developed over the years at SJE. Members of the parish who had lost family members in the past year made an offering in memory of their loved one to assist with the costs related to the
candles. If you and/or your family would like to do that, we would be most grateful and appreciative. You can send a donation to the
Parish Office. Please note clearly that it is for the new Paschal Can-dles and list the name of who you wish to remember.
