John Hinson AWCI President
Dear Colleagues,Please join me for AWCI’s Convention & Intex Expo to get some Big Ideas in the Big Easy– New Orleans. I promise it will be an enriching experience—just like gumbo.
Here are my top four reasons for attending:
1. Take home contacts with new friends—and see old friends. The networking is unparalleled for meeting the top movers and shakers in the wall and ceilings industry.
2. Take home solutions. Exhibitors will provide the latest product and service offerings at the Intex Expo (see page 27).
3. Take home tips for claims, technology offerings, shaping a bid, safety programs and much more during professional development sessions on Monday and Tuesday mornings (see pages 5-9).
4. Take home inspiration and fun at the Opening Session and Awards Presentation Brunch and at the Celebration Night Dinner (see pages 22 & 23).
I know you’ll walk away with at least one great idea that will more than pay for your investment of time and money to attend.
AWCI’s 2016 annual convention will be the best convention yet. A special prize drawing will be held on the last day of the trade show. Will you be the lucky winner?
I urge you to read through the information, reserve your hotel room and register early for what promises to be an outstanding event. John and Shawna hope to see you in New Orleans. Get down to business, then just get down.

If anyone knows how to successfully lead and execute a mission, it’s Lt. General Russel Honoré, USA (Ret.), who saved a city by taking swift charge of military relief efforts in Hurricane Katrina–battered New Orleans in 2005.
Drawing from 37 years of military experience, Gen. Honoré brings his bold, no-nonsense leadership approach to businesses and organizations to help them better identify and prepare for the challenges of the future. With an emphasis on the importance of innovations, risk assessment and social entrepreneurship, he provides valuable insight and strategies for the public and private sector to solve a broad array of issues—from jobs and energy to healthcare and technology. He also reveals leadership tactics that optimize efficiency and outlines the importance of developing the next generation of problem-solvers.
Gen. Honoré offers insight from decades of experience directing military operations in “Survival: How a Culture of Preparedness Can Save You and Your Family from Disasters.” In his recent book, “Leadership in the New Normal,” he extends rare perspective on our current state of the “new normal” where all stakeholders have a role in creating a “culture of preparedness,” to safeguard our economy and natural resources.
A senior scientist with The Gallup Organization, he is also an adjunct professor at Emory University, an independent director of Crawford & Company, serves as chairman of the board for La Bicentennial Commission and as a member on the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation board.
Meet Gen. Honoré following the Awards Brunch! He will be in USG booth #701 until 1 p.m. The first 50 people to visit USG’s booth will receive a free autographed copy of his book “Leadership in the New Normal.”

Acoustics Is a “Pain Point” for Architects, Contractors and Building OwnersThe purpose of this session is to explore the four acoustical concepts that affect contractors most:
• STC – the concept of sound loss through a wall or floor/ceiling assembly.
• IIC – The Impact Insulation Class is a method of rating the impact sound transmission performance of floor/ceiling structures.
• NRC – Noise reduction coefficient which manages sound and sound absorption within the room.
• CAC – Ceiling Attenuation Class measures sound isolation for ceiling tiles through ceiling plenum.
The session will be led by a panel of experts moderated by Warren Barber of National Gypsum.
Warren Barber, CSI CDT, is the manager of technical marketing for National Gypsum Company, based in Charlotte, N.C. In that role he manages National Gypsum’s technical messaging and technical marketing strategies. He has been involved with the development, sales and marketing of construction materials for nearly 20 years, primarily to the AEC community. During that time he has conducted architectural and contractor training throughout North America, the Caribbean, Mexico, UAE and Qatar.

Each seminar provides seven hours of education and will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. There will be a break from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. so participants can walk the trade show floor and have lunch.
Your registration for a Doing It Right seminar includes a complimentary trade show pass to Intex Expo on April 18 and 19, 2016. Register by March 15, 2016, to receive the early bird discount of $265 for AWCI members and $325 for non-members. Registration fees after March 15 are $300 for AWCI members and $360 for non-members.
BIM—Doing It Right™This course examines the current state in the construction industry as it relates to the usage of building information modeling. It is a must-attend seminar for the construction professional considering using BIM. The seminar will provide answers to questions such as, How much is this going to cost me, and who should be the person who manages the BIM process? What are the day-to-day activities of a project manager having to go through the BIM process? What are the real-world applications for BIM? What are the expectations of manufacturers? What do you do with BIM data? BIM provides assistance through every phase of the project including after the project is complete.
A panel of industry experts will provide answers to your questions while covering 10 topics during the seminar. Attendees will gain information on how to adopt BIM into their company using both hardware and software tools, see the advantages from internal controls, using it as a marketing tool, and the risk and liability issues that exist when working in a BIM environment.

and mobilization, types of suspended ceiling systems, specialty tools, estimating considerations and concerns as well as project management and quality control.
Exterior Envelope—Doing It Right®
Even though energy codes have been in place for several years now, they continue to be a source of confusion to architects and contractors as they design, bid and install exterior walls. The International Energy Conservation Code® has made these exterior wall systems more complex to design and construct. The new code’s continuous insulation requirement combined with ever-changing ASTM and ASHRAE construction standards are presenting major design and construct challenges.
This program will clarify the subtle but significant differences between the IECC and ASHRAE 90.1 and how that relates to LEED® initiatives. Moisture migration and heat transfer are the fundamental elements that drive the codes and standards, and they, too, can be confusing. This course starts with codes and standards, discusses the underlying building sciences, and ends with information for the job site with a goal to make a project successful.
Robert Grupe is the interim director of technical services for AWCI. He spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum Company where he held various technical and management positions. Activities included product and system design and technical consultation to the AEC community. He currently is a consultant to the construction community where he has worked on several large scale international construction projects. He has authored numerous articles and given presentations on fire, sound and environmental issues as they relate to wall and ceiling assemblies.
Gypsum—Doing It Right®
This seminar is based on industry standards and best practices for the installation of gypsum board systems. Developed under the guidance of an expert oversight group made up of contractors and manufacturers, a few of the topics covered include codes and standards, design issues, types of gypsum systems, red flags and solutions, finish systems and project management/quality control.

HOSPITALITY ACTIV ITY
French Quarter Food Tour and Scavenger HuntSunday, April 17 • 11 a.m.—2:30 p.m.Cost: $99 person30 person minimum 60 person maximum
The iconic French Quarter is New Orleans’ most historic and culturally rich neighborhood, having been the home at one point for the French, Spanish, Italian and Caribbean. Each culture left an indelible mark on the area and helped develop intricacies of Creole cuisine.
In recent decades, Cajun restaurants began to highlight Louisiana’s country cuisine as well. A new generation of creative chefs opened up shop, paying homage to both great cuisines while putting a new spin on the classics.
On the walk to the restaurants from the hotel, you will participate in a Scavenger Hunt. The tour guide will provide a historic, cultural and architectural tour of the area as well as about the restaurants and dishes. On the way to the restaurants, you will participate in a series of trivia, getting-to-know-you games, puzzles and matching games to spur some competition and conversation. Your guide(s) keep score throughout the event as teams work together to receive the coveted prize, which will be awarded at the last restaurant.
You will visit a number of establishments, enjoying a unique dining experience that combines samples with small plates. Some restaurants will provide a family style approach to enable guests to try as many specialties in the city as possible.
