SEASON 2018 The Elephant Man 5

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

I n 1980, I directed my first Pentacle Theatre show, Two For The Seesaw. By 1984, I had already directed four shows.

Then along came The Elephant Man. I don’t remember all of the details or specifics that I discovered in that production, only that it changed my life in many ways. I remember that I fell in love with John Merrick. He was a man who suffered the pains of Hell and still kept a pure heart. His integrity, honesty, bravery, and nobility inspired me greatly.

Forty-six Pentacle shows later, I marvel how much more I have discovered about this remarkable human being.

I hope you, our supportive and wonderful patrons, open yourselves to receive the gift of knowing the poetic John Merrick.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERStronger, together.

At Pentacle Theatre, our philosophy as an organization is that our fellow theaters are “community, not competition.” We enrich each other by helping each other. Sharing best practices, artistic challenges and theatrical achievements.

In the last few years, Pentacle Theatre has been an active mem-ber of the Salem Theatre Network, a non-profit group aimed at raising awareness of the quality theater happening all around Salem and the Mid-Willamette Valley. It has been a bridge-build-ing venture, connecting artists and communities together in a way we have always wanted, but lacked the formal structure in which to make it happen. The network successfully produced the second annual Cherry Blossom Theatre Festival this year, a city-wide celebration of all things theater and a testament to the power of collaboration.

This work to build community also has us looking for ways to connect with the new generation of theatergoers in our local schools. For many years we have had a successful partnership with schools and students by hosting a free dress rehearsal and talk back for every show produced at our theater. Frequently, these are completely full houses of students ready to experience what we do best. I am happy to share that we recently received grant funding that will allow us to increase participation of students who live in lower-income districts. With the grant funds, we can provide food and transportation for students who might not otherwise get to attend live theater.

Last January, we launched our winter fundraiser production of Beauty and the Beast. This was a very large production and not served well in our regular rehearsal space. The production team reached out to North Salem High School’s theater department. The school graciously allowed us to use their larger space. It was very kind gesture. In appre-ciation for using their space, Pentacle Theatre’s board and the cast and crew of Beauty and the Beast made donations to the North Salem High School theater program totaling more than $1100. We’re proud to support the next generation of theater kids.

Investing in each other will make us all stronger, our community more vibrant and keep the arts strong for years to come. Thank you for helping us get there.

Stronger, together.

David Ballantyne, Pentacle Theatre Governing Board President
