York medical students suffer a tragic accident
Each year medical students from York University spend a day on the hills with
Mark Reid of ‘The Inn Way‘ fame learning navigation skills and an appreciation
of medical care in ‘wild and remote places’.
When practical we end the day demonstrating how Mountain Rescue deal
with injury or illness in exposed area.
On the evening of the 30th
of April as the expedition approached Levisham
one of the students suffered a simulated lower leg injury while a second
started to suffer from the effects of hypothermia.
Three search parties attended and here we see Megan, one of the finds,
bundled up a ready for the carry out. Mark Reid is standing top right.

Raising funds in wild and
remote conditions
Adverse weather conditions did not prevent
Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team
hosting their successful annual Ravenscar Coastal Half
Marathon Fundraiser this weekend.
The popular, yet demanding, all terrain event starts from
Ravenscar village hall and runs south to Cloughton along a
combination of roads, public footpaths and the old
Whitby Scarborough railway line before returning along
the scenic cliff path to Ravenscar.
Despite a strong north easterly wind and driving rain
reducing the temperature to something feeling close to
zero degrees centigrade the event attracted some ninety
entries.
The race was started by Geoff Mortimer of Construction
Marine Ltd, Leeds who was kind enough to sponsor the
event this year.
The first runner, Andrew Huddleston was back in a very
respectable time of 1:31:57. The first lady, local resident
Cathy Wood, finished in an equally impressive time of
1:50:35.
For a number of runners this was their first event since
last week’s London Marathon and for one, Anthony
Corbett it provided the opportunity to present the team
with a cheque for £75 raised in sponsorship last weekend
when he was running on behalf of Mountain
Rescue. Anthony tells us he has similar gifts for a number
of other teams in the North Eastern Search and Rescue
Association (NESRA).
Prizes were awarded to the two winners by Geoff
Mortimer of Construction Marine Ltd, Leeds and Assistant
Chief Constable Sue Cross of North Yorkshire Police and
President of North Eastern Search and Rescue
Association. Sue is a long-time supporter of the team and
the voluntary Search and Rescue service we provide.
A full listing of results is available on the team web site.

Monthly update
We hosted a very successful Falcon Flyer in March. Along
with a very wet but popular ½ Marathon in April.
Our last challenge event of the year is the Saltergate circuit
– Saturday 6th
October
Please make sure the 6th
is in your diary. Remember we
need 13 staff to man the base, control, vehicles and sweep
the route before we cover any check points.
We also need people the night before to set up the venue
and the equipment needed for each check point.
We have approached a number of companies for
sponsorship but perhaps team members could suggest
other opportunities? The Raven Hall hotel sponsored part
of the costs of the Falcon Flyer and Construction Marine
Limited sponsored the ½ marathon.
Please advertise the events to friends, colleagues, clubs and
organisations.
Remember entry fees are refunded if individuals raise more
than £50 sponsorship for the team.
Entry forms for the events are on the web site. We are also
advertising with running club and walking groups. Let’s
hope they all turn into entries.
We saw a significant increase in entries for the Saltergate
circuit last year and the Falcon this year let’s see if we can
continue that sucess.

Notices April training day
This month’s training day took place in the forestry around
Yearsley moor and was organised and run by Roger and
Drew. For the morning activity they took parties around the
forest running around six mini scenario, each giving the
team lots of time to practice each of the roles within a
search party.
Peter’s patch
"Rowathon" Saturday 16th June 2012.
We have planned for this event to take place in the
Brunswick Centre Scarborough, starting at 0900 through to
1800.
I am looking for volunteers to take a turn on the rowing
machine for periods of 20 mins. The aim is to row a total
distance of 100km throughout the day.
Please contact me if you can help at anytime during the day.
When I have numbers I can make out a rota. If you dont feel
like rowing there will be collecting buckets to manage etc.,
this event is open to all volunteers and their families.
Filey Emergency Services Day Sunday 12th August.
Team Demonstration of a search and rescue incident.
A perfect chance to raise the Teams profile within the
community. We will need a large numbers of team members
to stage this demonstration.
Please contact me if you can help on the day. We expect to
hold the demo twice during the event. Again this
opportunity is open to all volunteers and their families.
There is something for all ages at this show and is well
attended by the general public.
Look forward to hearing from you all, regards Peter Holtby.
Training review
The committee, Training sub committee, Incident controller
group and honorary medical officer are holding a review of
the training scheme on the 26th
of May.
The current scheme has now been in place for a full training
cycle and in a spirit of continual improvement it is time to
review the content of the modules, any duplications or
omissions and how we demonstrate knowledge and
compliance.
We, the team, already have the opportunity to comment on
training at the end of each session, by anonymous feedback
via Russ’s coffin in the training room or simply by speaking
to Russ and his subcommittee. However there is an option
for you to provide input into this process by making your
views known to any one of those attending this review.
Above Egton Bridge 4th April 2012
Following lunch we embarked on a team line search
looking for a domestic heating engineer overdue for an
appointment. After a brief, yet demanding, search he
was successfully found and quickly and reunited with his
