     NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - Last

    year, Bergen-Passaic had two boys

reach the state stepladder finals with

Glen Rock senior Jake Rollins estab-

lishing an NJSIAA record by posting

a perfect game to win the title. Last

    month Bergen-Passaic had eight

players reach the second round, three

of whom qualified for the stepladder

     big five. Pompton Lakes’ sopho-

more Nick Cilento earned the third

seed with his 678-691-1369, andfought his way to the final by stop-

     ping fifth seed Andrew Lazarchick

    of Brick Memorial, 235-211 and

    second seed Greg Khan of

    Bergenfield, 187-185.

The final hurdle was no piece of

    cake, since sizzling top-seed

    Immaculata senior Gregory Tack

was his opponent. Greg had earned

the top spot by averaging 242+ in

    scorching Carolier with three-game

blocks of 740 and 715. Predictably,

the battle was nip and tuck with

Cilento reaching the ninth frame a

    scant three sticks ahead. Outwardly

cool as a cucumber, Cilento fired a

closing four-bagger to shut out Tack, thus earning Bergen-Passaic a sec-

    ond consecutive state crown.

    Edison senior Kayla Johnson had

been there three times before; as a

junior, she came up short and failed

to get past round one. She was deter-

mined that this last shot would be her

best effort and indeed it was as she

garnered the top seed by two sticks

    with blocks of 682-601-1283.

    Opening the championship match

with a pair of strikes, Kayla took an

early lead that she never relin-

quished, holding off third seed Tori

    Broughton Brick Memorial to cap-

    ture the coveted title.

    Stepladder Results: Boys -

Lazarchick over fourth seed KyleSchellberg [Dumont] 243-224,

    Cilento 235-211 over Lazarchick,

    187-185 over Khan and 238-214

over Tack. Girls - fourth seed

    McKenna Collier [Brick Memorial]

    edged Hopatcong’s Rhianna Smith

173-173 [58-48], but then fell to

    third seed teammate Tori Boughton,

    165-159; Boughton stopped second

    seed Alize Stevenson [St Mary-

    Elizabeth], 235-223 before dropping

    the finale, 183-171 to Johnson.Qualifiers: Boys - Tack 1455,

     April 1 - 7, 2015 SPORTS REPORTER 7

    WAYNE, NJ - A return to T-Bowl

proved fruitful for the Stan Niemiec

youth travelers who pounded the pins

    with regularity, resulting in a 740, a

pair of 699s and a 689 among the

    nine “600s” delivered. Boonton’s

    anchor Karl Kattermann lifted his

average to 206, sweeping the pin

deck with 740, the day’s best three-

some, forged with singles of 279-

    213-248.

Other deuces posted for Boontonwere Peter Hancock 224-230, Adam

    Gelvan 206-204 and Sean McGuire

    206. However, after an awesome 913

net, 1120 start, Boonton had to settle

    for three points against North

Arlington which came back to win the

match, firing an impressive 877 net of

its own; Jordan Lopez, who also

struck for a pair of 225s in his 699 set,

blasted 249, Haley Hassan 229 and

Jenai Bacote 222 in that game.

    Fair Lawn’s Steve Plaszky, current-

ly holding 211, the league’s third best

    average, followed an opening game

first frame spare with eleven strikes

for 290, eclipsing a 289 he had rolled

earlier in the season. He added deuces

    of 208 and 201 for a 699 set, power-

ing the squad to five of seven points

    against Bowler City III, 2735-2639.

Leading BC III with the only other

“200” on the pair was Greg Khan

    240, while teammates Nick Reyes

and Tiffany Sucero added 190 and

    180 respectively.In other contests,T-Bowl was

unable to generate much offense on

its home lanes, with the only deuce a

221 from Matt Morris as the team

    was swept by pacesetting Bowler

    City I, 2866-2727. Unleashing a

    fierce foray on the plastic-coats,

    anchor Kyle Schellberg delivered

    240-214-235-689 in raising his

league high average to 215 while

    mates’ Anthony Rizzo 230, JonMikal

    Sepero 222-197 and Janina Santoro

197 added to the carnage on the pin

    decks.

The two Holiday teams squared up

    with the defending champion

Holiday I gang snaring five of seven

points. The victors’ low game in ten

of the twelve rolled was a 190, indica-

tive of the team’s firepower. Ryan

    McGuire 212-215-224-651, Nick

    Cilento 257-213-622, Frank Magyar

    204-594 and David Neil 197-190.

Short-handed Holiday II was led by

Joe Malyack 238-213-632 and CraigOriente 193.

In pacing Bowler City II to a shutout

of Lodi, Dean Edwards fired 226-

    213-634, Matt Burzynski 203-196

and Emily Young 189. Best for Lodi

was Chris Navarro’s fine effort of

    231-206-210-647.

    Closing out the session, Montvale

scored well enough to sweep the

    seven points against the vacancy.

    Creditable numbers were produced

by Chris Torres 203, Nick Fabiano

    199-189 and Dan Sproviero 187.
