The Conversion of St. Paul and the Power of God
In the Easter season, the one biblical text that the Church uses a lot—almost every day in the lectionary cycle of readings—is the Acts of the Apostles. The author of this text was also the one who wrote the Gospel of Luke. In short, Acts describes the early activities of the apostles and disciples after the resurrection of Jesus. On this 5th Sunday of Easter, we read from chapter 9 of Acts—about the new disciple Saul/Paul. Prior to his becoming a Christian disciple, Saul was the most notorious persecutor of Christians. Acts 8:3 relates: “Saul was trying to destroy the [Christian] church; entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment.” Saul himself was a strong Jew and an ardent supporter of the Law. His total opposition to the Christian movement reveals how it was almost impossible for the typical Jews of his days to accept the notion of a “crucified” Messiah. Anyway, Saul was still “breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord” before his fateful journey to Damascus (Acts 9:1). We should reflect on that chilling image of the eventual would-be apostle. Would a father hand his daughter to a man for marriage if he (the father) were able to read the malicious intentions in that man’s heart? Would a direc-tor of priestly vocations recommend a young man for the priesthood if he could see viciousness of the young man’s heart? Would any apostle/disciple in Saul’s time expect that such a persecutor like Saul could eventually be a disciple? Of course no one can read anyone else’s heart, except God. Obviously God saw something in Saul that nobody else could; and God con-verted him… St. Paul was arguably the most fervent preacher of the Christian faith throughout the history of Christianity. Once a notorious persecutor of Christians, he became the most devout Christian disciple. Here I have to mention the common percep-tion that he changed his name from Saul to Paul after his conversion. Most likely he did NOT. We have to remember that he was a Jew, but also a citizen of the Roman Empire. It was not uncommon for people like him to have two names: one Semitic (Saul) and the other Greco-Roman (Paul)… In any case, the story of his conversion was a turning point in Christianity. But this story does not tell us so much about Paul: at least not as much as it says something about the power of God. God is al-ways able to write straight with crooked lines! If we believe that God created everything out of nothing—to use the traditional Latin phrase creatio ex nihilo—then of course God could surely convert the mind and heart of Paul. In the end, it is always God who is able to bring about a good ending out of any dismal circumstances.
