Lackland ISD E-News www.lacklandisd.net

On April 1 the pre-kindergarten through second grade students participated in career day. The students had an opportunity to meet a nurse practitioner, an engineer, a dental hygienist, veterinarians, the Lackland AFB musicians,

firefighters, animal and guide dog trainers, security forces, a master gardener and our very own Lackland Elementary school cafeteria chefs. The students had an awesome time learning about our environment, animal care, health,

nutrition, wellness, safety, and the arts. We appreciate all our presenters and our sixth grade CLOVER students who served as host for this event.

ABOVE AND BEYOND AWARDS

Do you know a Lackland ISD employee who is providing service of exceptional merit which is above and beyond normal expectations? If so,

take a few minutes to nominate this individual for recognition through our ‘Above and Beyond’ award program.

The purpose of our Above and Beyond award is to recognize employees for exceptional merit provided over an extended period of time. We all benefit when individual employees take the extra time and effort to do their job in

as outstanding manner. This award is to help foster great service that is demonstrated over time. Every employee has the opportunity to say ‘Thank

You’ to those who provide outstanding service on special occasions. However, when service is provided in an exemplary manner over an

extended time, and for those extra special employees who consistently go the extra mile, you can recognize them with a nomination for our “Above

and Beyond” award.

It's time to accept applications for our Above and Beyond employee recognition award. The nomination form is available on our Lackland ISD web site under the Staff tab. A completed nomination form and a letter

identifying some specific reasons you feel the person you are nomination should receive the Lackland ISD 'Above and Beyond' award may be

submitted to our Above and Beyond Recognition Committee (Betty Kindla will collect them for us in the district office) by 4:00 PM on May 9th 2011.

We plan to select our Spring 2011 'Above and Beyond' award recipients for recognition at the May school board meeting. Each honoree will receive a

Certificate of Achievement, a $200.00 stipend, and a reserved parking space for the next semester. Up to two professional employees, one

paraprofessional, and one auxiliary employee may be honored each semester.

Kim Martin is one of our Fall 2010 Above and

Beyond award winners in our professional category. Ms. Martin serves as an Instructional Technologist for the elementary campus. Her

nomination recommendation says, “Kim is dedicated to the students, faculty, and

community of Lackland. She genuinely wants others to share her passion for technology and the doors that it opens for students.” We are

proud to recognize Kim Martin as one of our Fall 2010Above and Beyond award winners in the

professional category.

Waleska Rivera is our Fall 2010 Above

and Beyond award winner in the paraprofessional category. She was praised for learning Algebra I and

Algebra II. Her nomination package is quoted as “she worked to learn ahead so she could assist the students in the classroom when they needed it.” We

are fortunate to have Ms. Rivera on our Stacey Jr/Sr High School staff. It is our

privilege to recognize Waleska Rivera as our Fall 2010 Above and Beyond award

winners in the paraprofessional category.

Rosemary Carrion is also one of our

Fall 2010 Above and Beyond award winners in our professional category.

Ms. Carrions is a 4th Grade teacher, and her class joined her for the award

during the school board meeting. Her nomination package says it best, “She is

always the first to volunteer for any committee. She works relentlessly with

staff members and parents to find solutions and help student be

successful.” We are fortunate to have Rosemary Carrion on our Elementary

School teaching staff.

GETTING READY! Mercado is just around the corner. Students have been working hard at

learning the vocabulary to go shopping in Spanish and making their projects. They have learned the history of how “Mercados” began and its

significance in the Hispanic culture. Each project has given them a glimpse into how this community lives, celebrates and enjoys coming

together to share their “specialty”. Mark your calendars - Tuesday, May 24 is going to be a big day!

Viva Mercado!!!!

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING?

Have your students lost something? The elementary school has a large collection (large!) of

coats and jackets, personal items, and articles of clothing that have been left behind as students move through the

school day. Come by the EyeMax in the elementary building to check

for your belongings. All items will be donated to charity after Tuesday, April

12.

6th grade students stay busy helping Senora Singleterry prepare craft products

for this year’s Mercado. Many students show up early for school and willingly give up their free time to

help.

The productivity and work ethic of these students is greatly appreciated!
