Despite best design practice and fault tolerant techniques system level problems occur. Why? Lack of integration level analysis of the software/system architecture is a major reason. These analysis need to be conducted early and throughout the lifecycle to insure system integration feasibility and correctness. With a precise architecture description that can be analyzed, we can discover and manage each of these issues. Examples of mismatched assumptions are: Assumptions about the physical plant: auto pilots are designed for aircraft of certain size. Different size aircraft have different lag of response behavior due to their size. This is taken advantage of in the rate at which auto pilots operate. Measurement units: Ariane5 used software with a 16bit variable to represent a domain variable, thus, limiting its value range which was then exceeded by the physical system. (http://sunnyday.mit.edu/accidents/Ariane5accidentreport.html) Air Canada: An example of mismatch in measurement unit (Gallons, Liters): http://googleblog.tobylaura.com/2009/05/liters-vs-gallons.html. Concurrency: Itunes crashes randomly fails on dual core processors when ripping songs from CD. Itunes is multi-tasked, one task determining the Db levels, the other ripping, but no concurrency control on updating the song catalog. On a single processor system one task completes before the second starts. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1235236& Distribution, redundancy: 5 physical ARPA-net trunk lines became 5 logical trunklines when telecom companies went fiber optic. Within 3 months contractor dug up that fiber optic cable and damaged it, resulting in two ARPA-nets. http://www.thocp.net/reference/internet/internet2.htm F16: In the migration to the Modular Mission Computer (MMC) architecture rate monotonic scheduling was introduced. During a simulated flight the pilot noticed “random blurriness of the screen”. It turned out that the target symbol of a tracked object was oscillating due to the fact that the latency of the target position data from the sensor to the display varied between 4 and 8 sampling frames.

Analytical models are used to predict system qualities, e.g., timing, reliability, security. These models are typically developed independently by experts in Markov models, fault trees, Bell LaPadula, etc. There is a need to validate that these models represent the same architecture, esp. as the architecture may evolve. Otherwise, the model analysis results have no validity and the models are quickly out of date. This is in fact the current state of the practice! Its another reason that integration level errors are not discovered early. Validation of expected system qualities based on models is not sufficient. We have to ensure that the implementation meets the quality requirements by ensuring that the implementation preserves the model semantics, and the model reflects the implementation in sufficient fidelity. The performance of the implementation is what counts.

Analyses make assumptions about other system properties that must be validated in order for the results to hold. This leads to the need for end-to-end reliability validation, not only from requirements through design to implementation, but also across different analysis dimensions. Example, reliability models make the assumption that the redundancy management logic is correct. Its correctness makes assumptions about the timing of execution and communication.

The framework is an integration of technology concepts from architecture-centric model-based engineering (SAE AADL & SEI MBE), system theoretic approach to safety analysis (Leveson MIT), safety cases & software assurance (Kelly U. York, Goodenough SEI), model checking & static analysis of models and code (Miller Rockwell Collins, Gurfinkel SEI, European efforts), requirements formalization (CalTech/JPL, GORE Lambsweerde). Requirements expressed in the context of an intended system. Both mission and reliability requirements must be validated for completeness and soundness. The requirements are mapped onto the system architecture and its decomposition as claims. The system model and implementation must be verified against these mission and reliability claims (requirements). The confidence in this verification is determined by the by the coverage of the claims, the effectiveness of the verification methods, and the validity of assumptions made by the models and the verification methods. Parts of this framework are embodied in the Aerospace Vehicle Systems Institute (AVSI) System Architecture Virtual Integration (SAVI) industry initiative.

We evolve from predictive models to increased validation. We do so as system design evolve down the V to more detail, and as implementations of pieces become available. Analyses of lower level models feed back to higher level models to revisit the analysis, and as component implementations become available results of their test measurements are fed back to increase confidence that predictions converge with actual behavior of system implementations.

Software-reliant system engineering and qualification requires a paradigm shift from build-then-test to model-based engineering

Architecture-centric modeling with strong semantics as found in the SAE AADL standard is key to analysis and validation of system-level mission and safety-critical properties throughout development life cycle
