Awards help inspire top performance in motoring industry ‘ Currently there are more than 3700 apprentices and trainees employed in the Northern Territory, many of them within the automotive industry. In addition, the retail motor trades industry contributes significantly to the Territory economy — it comprises more than 1000 businesses, services 135,000 vehicles annually and employs more than 4000 staff ’ MINISTER for Employment and Training Dave Tollner has praised the achievements of 15 Territory workers who are shining lights in the Territory automotive industry. The workers were rewarded for their efforts at the TIO Automotive Apprentice of the Year awards in Parliament House on Tuesday night. Mr Tollner singled out Group Training NT’s Maxwell David who was named Ap- prentice of the Year. Mr David also won his category of 3rd/4th Year Light Vehicle Mechanical Apprentice, which was presented by Mr Tollner. ‘‘Max’s example encourages others think- ing about an apprenticeship to give it a go,’’ he said. ‘‘I know the efforts of all award winners will benefit all of us in the Northern Territory for years to come and the Territory Government is proud to be an awards sponsor. ‘‘It is important to keep reminding our school leavers that automotive appren- ticeships are a very legitimate career pathway and the outstanding work of the 15 winners at this year’s awards has been well recognised.’’ The Northern Territory Government has a blueprint in place called ‘‘Framing the Future’’ and one of its objectives it to have an economy that is built on strong local businesses. It supports Territory businesses to develop and train their people to im- prove productivity. ‘‘This means maintaining a local skilled workforce and apprenticeships and trainee- ships are a great way of developing a competent, home-grown workforce,’’ Mr Tollner said. ‘‘Currently there are more than 3700 apprentices and trainees employed in the Northern Territory, many of them within the automotive industry. ‘‘In addition, the retail motor trades industry contributes significantly to the Territory economy — it comprises more than 1000 businesses, services 135,000 vehicles annually and employs more than 4000 staff.’’
