HullUK City of Culture 2017The countdown is on for Hull 2017, when our great city will become only the second UK city of culture, and the first in England. With a £190million investment programme, 2017 promises to be a year of cultural and artistic celebration, with 1500 events in 365 days. Hull is a unique, colourful and inventive city, and will be placed firmly in the spotlight for 2017 and beyond. Choosing to study in Hull will put you at the heart of a year-long festival, enriching your experience and enabling you to be part of a long-lasting legacy well beyond your graduation.

Looking further afield, Hull stands on the edge of the River Humber and is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the East Riding. You’re less than an hour away from the stunning East Yorkshire coastline, whilst a direct train will get you to London in just two and a half hours. There is also a major ferry port right here in Hull, and several international airports close by.

So wherever you’re coming from or wherever you want to go, Hull College is sure to get you there, and give you the most memorable years of your life.

That’s why we place so much emphasis on preparing you for employment and providing you with the skills to put you ahead of the crowd. Our courses will give you the skills you need to shine at work and we offer a wide range of training routes which ensure you can learn your way, whether that’s on one of our College campuses or within the workplace.

One of the things we’re most proud of at Hull College is the range of employers we work with. From multinational corporations to local industry, we count some of the area’s most prominent employers among our partners, including Siemens, Spencer Group and Rollits LLP. This relationship means we are able to offer our students unrivalled opportunities for work placements - and in fact some of our students have even secured employment as a result of their time on placement. Furthermore, our ongoing investment in facilities means students are able to learn the skills they need to succeed in the workplace.

I believe in working together to succeed, and I look forward to welcoming you to the College as you begin your journey to success.

The Hull College Group is a uniquely diverse organisation and we take pride in the fact that we put the student at the heart of everything we do. As a Group we are committed to improving the skills, employability and progression opportunities of all our students, by giving you access to the best training, education and employment opportunities, whatever your background. As part of your study programme, you will develop vital English and maths skills, as well as having the opportunity for a work experience placement during your time with us. We are dedicated to developing ever-stronger relationships with local employers to give you the best possible opportunities within your chosen sector.

The size and scope of the Hull College Group brings a whole range of benefits to our students, not least the opportunity to progress onto degree level at one of our Higher Education sites in Hull, Harrogate and, new for this year, Scarborough. But we also pride ourselves on the community we have created, where students are valued and supported.

I look forward to welcoming you in September.

The new Hull College Group Composites Training Centre, in partnership with Siemens, will train workers for the company’s new wind turbine blade factory in Hull. Siemens selected Hull College Group from four local training providers following a thorough bidding process involving extensive information gathering and evaluation. The contract will see the conversion of an existing college facility to deliver training to the blade factory workforce over the next two years.

Hull College Group will invest significantly to upgrade and re-equip the existing Construction Skills Centre on Hull’s Preston Road estate, which is just two miles from the blade factory site at Alexandra Dock.

All 800 operational staff hired to work in the blade factory will undergo five weeks of training at the Hull College facility, with the first recruits trained from March 2016.

After a first week of introduction to Siemens and its culture and values, employees will undergo two weeks of training, delivered by Hull College Group, introducing them to Siemens’ turbine blades and how they are manufactured.

This will include production of small-scale versions of the huge 75m blades that will be manufactured in the Hull factory.

A further two weeks of specialist training, delivered by Siemens staff, will prepare recruits for specific roles. Finally, a further eight weeks of hands-on training will ensure staff are ready to work in the factory, which is due to open in September 2016. Depending on specific job roles, this training will take place in a converted warehouse at Alexandra Dock or, if training in a factory environment is essential, at the Aalborg factory.

With partner Associated British Ports (ABP), Siemens is investing £310m in the Hull project to create world-class and world-scale offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing, assembly, logistics and servicing facilities employing 1,000 people.

For more information and to download the Apprenticeship prospectus visit

Many of our programmes offer an Apprenticeship route which combines on and off-the-job training whilst earning a salary! Apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Most Apprentice training takes place on the job. The off-the-job training varies from day release to studying over a number of days in a block. The amount of time spent studying varies according to the framework. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the Apprentice’s ability and the industry sector. In 2014, leading specialist engineering business Spencer Group forged

a partnership with Hull College which saw the company take

on 12 apprentices through a series of workshops. This level of intake was the highest the company had committed to in its history, and all of the apprentices are still with the company and continuing to impress and excel in their roles.

Due to the impressive standard shown by

our students, Spencer Group announced that in

September 2015, a second block of the workshops

would run with the aim of taking on another

ten apprentices from Hull College, working with the College to identify the most suitable candidates for engineering and quantity surveyor roles.

Aaron McIver of Spencer Group said,

“This is an excellent partnership, which works really well for the students, the College and for us, as we are able to identify, at an early stage, the students that are best suited to our business.

“We are working to ensure Spencer Group and Hull College are so closely aligned that we create a conveyor belt of young talent with a smooth transition into employment.

“It’s going to be a very exciting year for us and we’re looking forward to working with Hull College to offer yet more apprenticeships in engineering and construction.”

The Traineeships programme is part of the Apprenticeships family and is designed for 16-23 year olds. If you are not currently working and haven’t had the chance to gain much work experience just yet, then this programme is for you.

This individualised programme can be from 5 weeks up to 6 months and will include:

• Work placement in a vocational area of your choice

• Working towards maths and English qualifications

• Employability skills such as CV writing, job searching and other work related topics

In just six months, this individualised programme could lead you to an Apprenticeship or a job in your chosen field. It will help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to progress.

Whilst on this pre-apprenticeship programme individuals will have the opportunity to qualify for and receive either free driving lessons, a push bike, or a work wear clothing allowance.

For the sixth consecutive year, students based in Hull College ceramics and glass department have designed and produced the trophies for the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (REYTA).

Significantly this time, learners have been predominantly school leavers studying on the first year of the Level 3 Advanced diploma in Art and Design (Fine Art). Frances Kendrick produced the unique winning design based on an Ammonite with a circular glass form which complements the ceramic base.

Lecturer Nancy Pliener said: “To produce 14 awards and several spares, it is always challenging, but this student group has climbed a massive learning curve with complex technologies involved which have all had to be mastered.

“All the staff within the department are proud of the learners and their dedication.

“I will attend the awards dinner at the stadium with students Caitlin Smith and Harriet Smith and we are looking forward to seeing the winners revealed and the trophies presented, representing

the culmination of a significant live project from the college”.

Caitlin Smith said: “I’ve really enjoyed working on the project. It has been exciting to produce something for a real client and I’ve learnt a lot of skills which will help prepare me for working in a professional environment.

“It’s fantastic to think that award winners will take home our work and proudly display them – it really makes all of our hard work worth it. I think my skills within ceramics and glass have improved significantly over the course of the project – I feel like I could do anything now!”.

A Hull College art student scored the ultimate selfie when A-list actor Aaron Paul, star of US series Breaking Bad, posed with a piece of his work. Talented Ashley Norris, studying for his Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, with a specialism in Fine Art, has a passion for portrait drawing and, as a fan of hit US drama Breaking Bad, decided to render the actor in pencil. Once the piece was complete, he shared it via image-led social media channel Instagram, where a chain of events led to Aaron, who plays Jesse Pinkman on the show, seeing the picture and giving it an official seal of approval by posing with his face next to his line-drawn likeness.

Ashley is a frequent Instagram user and one of his followers on the site happens to be Aaron Paul’s niece. As soon as Ashley uploaded his drawing of her famous uncle, she spotted it and showed it to her mum – Aaron’s sister. Next, the sister got in touch and asked if Ashley would be happy to post the drawing over to the US so that Aaron could see it. Ashley agreed, but – showing a further creative streak – asked for a selfie in return. Aaron, who was delighted with the image, happily obliged. In fact, he liked the drawing so much he asked if he could keep it – a request Ashley could not refuse.

Ashley says: “Instagram and social media really is mad. Just before Aaron took the photo, I got a message from another one of his nieces called Averee, she sent me a photo of her holding my drawing saying ‘So amazed by your drawing of my uncle!’ I was a bit shocked that she had seen it too.

“Then a few weeks after Aaron took the selfie, his mum and dad started following me on twitter, and another one of his sisters on Instagram! Still waiting

for a follow from Aaron though, that would be the icing on the cake”.

Lecturer Frances Kelly, who teaches Ashley, said: “Ashley is very talented and puts a huge amount of detail into his work – you could say he is obsessed by it. It’s fantastic that his portrait of Aaron Paul was endorsed by the actor himself, it’s proof that social media can be a fantastic tool for sharing work and for increasing your profile. If you are savvy in the way that you use social media and follow the right people it can be extremely powerful, as Ashley has proved.

“Ashley’s work featured in our end of year show alongside his fellow students’. We’re extremely proud of all of them”.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Hull College embarked on a programme of collaboration to inspire confidence and encouragement in the next generation of East Yorkshire entrepreneurs, whilst enhancing the prospects of Hull’s existing business community.

The programme launched with a networking event at the College which saw more than 40 College students meet with 20 local businesses, all of which introduced a product or service with the potential to benefit from improved marketing. The students were then tasked with identifying new and innovative ways of marketing the products and

services. The results of the exercise were then used to feed content for an event during the Humber Business Week.

Alex Alterskye, Hull College’s HE Course Leader for Business and Management said: “This unique project provided our students with an opportunity to demonstrate their business skills and apply their ingenuity to solve real problems in real businesses. We are very pleased to be working with the FSB in this ground-breaking project which is the start of a new relationship between the Humber business community and the educational establishment”.

Hull College welcomed hundreds of visitors when it hosted the region’s biggest digital and gaming expo in November. The fifth annual Platform Expo event, which aims to inspire young people to carve their own career path within creative digital industries, was hosted at sites across the College, including the Centre for Digital and Green Energy Skills and the Horncastle building.

Digital company Platform recently opened a new studio base within Hull College’s Centre for Digital and Green Energy, which provides students and young people with access to the industry experts and resources to develop employability skills and encourage enterprise and new business start-ups.

Running for two days at Hull Guildhall as well as the College, Platform Expo offered visitors one-on-one engagement with leading industry names. The event aims to empower visitors to consider careers in gaming and content creation, and to encourage enterprise and new business start-ups.

Platform also launched a new Virtual Reality Headset called VISR, designed and manufactured in Hull.

The College offers a range of courses from Level 2 to Degree for those interested in pursuing employment in games design, computer science or software development and works in close collaboration with Platform promoting student enterprise and employability. The annual Expo has been supported by the College since its launch five years ago and receives significant support from College staff and students, with students involved in all aspects, from hosting exhibitions to volunteering as guides during the event.

Hull College Principal Graham Towse said: “The College is proud to support Platform Expo. As part of our Digital Manifesto Hull College has pledged to develop a digital skills provision that will accelerate the growth of the digital economy within the region building on our strengths in digital gaming, content creation and the creative sectors.

“The Expo is an ideal opportunity for young people who would like to develop a career in gaming and content creation to find out more about the opportunities available to them within an exciting, vibrant and fast-paced industry that includes youth enterprise and new business start-ups”.

Platform Expo offered access to a range of workshops and presentation events encompassing game development, programming, creative writing, art and design, sound design, business management and marketing. Drawing in some of the biggest industry names to the city, speakers included Lee Stott, Technical Evangelist and Head of UK Gaming at Microsoft. A Microsoft team from Washington US also flew in to undertake a day long ‘Marmalade’ masterclass.

Lindsay West, Founder of Platform Expos, said: “Video gaming is a multi-billion pound global industry boasting high employability rates and job opportunities. However, the industry is not just about big business, there are opportunities for small start-ups powered by the growth in mobile gaming that can become bigger in time.

“Our aim is to encourage local creative talent to make an impact nationally and globally, to put Hull on the gaming industry map in time for 2017 and to aspire to showcase global video games made here and made by local students”.

Whenever you sit down to watch a Rank produced film, you witness a little piece of Hull’s history. The opening sequence of a strongman striking a golden gong has become one of the most Iconic of the last 100 years.

The house in which J Arthur Rank was born, on Hull’s Holderness Road, has sat empty and derelict for many years until recently, when not-for-profit organization Probe (Hull) Limited was given the task of transforming the property into four apartments to rent.

To mark the restoration of the movie mogul’s house, students from Hull College created a replica of the famous gong, set to take pride of place in the entrance.

Paul and Richard Marshall both study Body Repair,

and alongside their tutor Paul Wisker, spent more than 40 hours painstakingly creating the gong from scratch, including some of the tools needed.

Paul said: “It was a great experience and certainly a challenging one. We used all of the skills we have learned throughout the course to fabricate the gong and when we started with a flat piece of steel, it was hard to imagine the finished product, but now I think it looks amazing.”

Richard added: “I enjoyed fabricating the gong, as it meant we used traditional hand skills and processes to create it and we also had to make a specific tool to fashion the acoustic dimples. It is an honour to think our hard work will be displayed in the Rank House and hopefully it will be used as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations in 2017.”

Hull College’s East Hull Prince’s Trust Team celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the programme by completing a double community project challenge in just two weeks. Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people gain the skills and confidence to find work, with three in four young people helped by the charity moving into work, education or training.

The Prince’s Trust recently marked the 25th year of its Team programme with a nationwide campaign supported by Barclays, and the Hull team, made up of sixteen young people not in education, employment or training, took part by creating a mud kitchen for children at a Hull Nursery and undertaking the renovation of a local Resource Centre by decorating the nursery and creating a child-friendly garden.

Along with painting murals and decorating the children’s play spaces, the group have been working outside clearing, weeding and planting in the garden.

Graham White, Commercial Manager of the Ings Road Resource Centre said: “The young people have been so keen and committed to carrying out the work, and it’s great to be able to provide a learning experience to help them develop a mature attitude to work.”

The young people taking part in Team were all unemployed before joining the 12-week programme, which helps young people gain the skills and confidence they need to find work.

Team member Liayle Morgan, aged 22 said: “It’s really good fun and nice to be able to give something back to the community, as the local children will benefit from all our hard work – it’s something I feel passionate about.”

Liayle was previously unemployed after completing a qualification in Sociology and returning to Hull. He has now secured employment as a Family Support Worker.

Team Leader Elizabeth Cullen said: “The Princes Trust Team programme provides a truly vital opportunity for young people to develop employability skills to enable them to progress into education, training or employment. In some cases it offers young people the first chance they may have had to learn and grow these skills in a safe and friendly environment, re-engaging them with education in the process.”

Everyone at the nursery is now looking forward to reaping the benefits of the project for the local community.
