editorial

Among the many trade fairs that the company attends every year, in Italy and abroad, Eima has always held special significance. This is due to the strong reputation that it has built up

ral Entrepreneurs (AGIA) that illustrate the many new job openings created by recent innovations in agriculture: jobs that desperately need filling (including to replace the outgoing generation of experts) and which represent excel-lent employment opportunities. These are also reasons why we have cho-sen EIMA to officially present our new agricultural range, as illustrated in this latest edition of the Dieci Magazine. In doing so, we can be certain of reaching out to a knowledgeable and interested audience, consisting not just of custo-mers, but also people who, in the near future, will use the tools we produce to make best use of the Earth’s resources.

over the years with visitors and exhi-bitors alike, its international reach, its excellent organisation, and obviously the great visibility that it provides. But another important characteristic of Eima, one that is perhaps not so appa-rent – at least not to the exhibitors, who are preoccupied by the many pressing problems that participating in such a major event entails – is its focus on the future. Not only in terms of technologi-cal innovation, but also in terms of new agricultural policies, new environmental practices and initiatives dedicated to young people (especially in this 2018 edition), such as presentations by the Department of Agriculture of the Uni-versity of Bologna and by the Italian National Assembly of Young Agricultu-

On landing at Paramaribo airport, uni-nitiated travellers who chose Suriname as a destination (tempted by the pro-spect of the Caribbean sea, sun and perhaps a daiquiri on some shaded ha-cienda porch) could be forgiven for thin-king they had taken the wrong flight...Spanish and Brazilian phrase books are useless in this country, where the most spoken languages are Dutch and Sranan Tongo (a lingua franca blending English, Dutch, Portuguese and Afri-can languages), as well as Hindi, Ja-vanese and Chinese. A country that,

according to Colombian novelist Ga-briel Garcia Marquez in his “Notas de prensa”, seems more Asian than South American, mistakenly transplanted by the heavens onto the Caribbean coast. This impression is reinforced by the many ethnic groups that live there, in-cluding Indians, Indonesians, Chinese, Amerindians, Europeans and Africans (displaced during the colonial period), and that help to differentiate it from the South America we know. Populated by just 500,000 inhabitants and approxi-mately the size of Tunisia, until 1954

Suriname was called Dutch Guiana, an evocative name that brings to mind the infamous penal colonies of neighbou-ring country French Guiana, as well as Henri Charriere, the famous “Papillon” who was unjustly imprisoned and tried nine times to escape by crossing the jungle and the sea around Suriname, eventually finding refuge in Venezuela. Today, the rivers and the dense jungle of Suriname continue to be traversed by adventurous individuals, although nowadays they travel in large off-road vehicles and carry satellite phones and

sophisticated equipment: they are mi-ning prospectors, in constant search of the treasures hidden under the jungle, especially bauxite and gold. Around 80 km south of the capital, Paramaribo, lies one of the country’s largest gold mines, the Rosebel mine, which spans 170 square kilometres and has produced 4.4 million ounces of gold since 2004.The mineral is extracted from the allu-vial soil in open pits: rocks unearthed by huge excavators (6.5 m tall) are loaded onto equally huge dumpers capable of transporting 300 tonnes of rocks to the mills with every truckload. In the mill, the mineral is crushed and heated to high temperatures, before the precious metal is extracted and

cast directly into large ingots. On paper it seems like child’s play, but in reality, establishing and maintaining a mining concession is an extremely complex process that requires years of research, investment and draining diplomatic negotiations that, if suc-cessful, give way to extremely labo-rious and often dangerous work, in which the thorough maintenance of vehicles and facilities is an essential factor for operator safety. That is why the Rosebel mine has pur-chased a number of Pegasus 45.30 vehicles from Dieci America, which are being used for the maintenance of large machinery and installations. The large dumpers and excavators used in the mining industry are po-

werful machines, but the harsh work and climate can quickly wear down the most exposed parts, particularly tyres and hydraulic hoses. The Pe-gasus and its basket enable mainte-nance staff to easily and safely reach components on vehicles over 6 me-tres high – including hydraulic hoses, connections, drains and lights – which would be otherwise difficult to reach. The rotating turret also makes things

easier when it comes to lifting and po-sitioning heavy and bulky parts. And if the ground is uneven or mud-dy (which it almost always is, being located in a tropical jungle), the four automatic levelling stabilisers provide a welcome guarantee of safety, such as when changing dumper tyres mea-suring four metres high and weighing almost five tonnes...But the Pegasus vehicles are not so-

lely used on mining machines: the tro-pical environment, humidity, the heat of the furnaces, and the rocks and powder take their toll on the mill instal-lations too.Planned and unplanned maintenan-ce, checks and the replacement of components are everyday chores for a facility dozens of metres high and spanning a vast area.Even here, the specifications of the

Pegasus 45.30 are highly apprecia-ted, such as their 4500 kg load capa-city, lifting height up to 30 metres and numerous accessories, which can meet the most diverse needs.Unlike many other South American mi-ning concessions (and in keeping with the idiosyncratic nature of this count-ry), the Rosebel mine seems to be well integrated in the economic, social and environmental context of Suriname:

the government holds a stake in the company, and in addition to receiving royalties, taxes and exploitation rights (875 million dollars in ten years), it also receives a portion of the mine’s divi-dends.The facility, which employs more than 1600 people, is diligently committed to preventing environmental pollution, upholding safety at work and suppor-ting the local population in terms of

education and medical assistance. Thanks to its strict compliance with safety regulations, the Rosebel mine achieved an important milestone in 2016: five million man-hours without an accident.A milestone achieved, at least in part, thanks to the work of our Pegasus vehicles.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR

13No 3 October 2018

“High expectations”: this is the phrase that crops up most frequen-tly in comments about the upcoming 43rd edition of Eima, which has now become one of the sector’s biggest in-ternational events and is preceded by a buzz of expectation. The show also provides Dieci with the ideal audience to present its latest innovative products, which notably include the vehicles in the new agri-cultural range: Agri Farmer GD, Agri Star GD, Agri Plus GD and Agri Max GD. Due to the numerous and extensive innovations introduced, the-se vehicles are not simply upgrades of previous models, but new products in every major detail: from the Stage4/Tier4F engine and the completely re-designed boom to the electronic con-trol unit, which oversees the driving mode, RPM control, forward speed, diagnostics, and all other vehicle con-trol functions. Last but not least, the

new cabin, designed exclusively for Dieci by Giugiaro Design, is thorou-ghly stylish and packed with technolo-gical innovations: it has been reuphol-stered with automotive-inspired soft touch materials in light colours, which enhance the brightness of the interior while drastically reducing vi-brations and improving thermal insu-lation and soundproofing. By injection moulding the various components we have been able to reduce the to-tal number of parts, obtain extremely precise pieces that are easier to as-sembly, increase their structural rigi-dity and enhance the overall look of the new cab design. The legendary comfort of DIECI cabs has been im-proved by the new shock absorption system (capable of smoothing out the harshest bumps efficiently, even when negotiating rough terrain) and a new air conditioning system that guarantees even air distribution like

no other telehandler model, thanks to advanced fluid dynamic studies per-formed using CFD simulations. The convenient layout of the instrumen-tation, backlit switches and adju-stable armrest for the new joystick reveal careful consideration given to ergonomics. The joystick incorporates the fwd/rev selector (FNR reverse shuttle) for easier and more practical direction control. The vehicle’s fully in-tegrated electronic control system is an exclusive DIECI feature. The CAN-BUS system establishes the optimal work and safety parameters by me-ans of in-depth diagnostics, and data is displayed in real time on the new 7” LCD display, so that the operator can keep track of all the information needed to monitor the vehicle and its systems in a detailed and intuitive manner. The new vehicles are alrea-dy available to order and come in two versions: Standard and Luxury.

EIMA will feature one of the main-stays of the DIECI agricultural range, the MINI AGRI 25.6, alongside the new MINI AGRI 20.4 prototype mo-del, which is even more compact and agile while offering the same comfort and performance. The MINI AGRI 25.6 needs no intro-duction: for years it has been one of

the standout vehicles in the Agricultu-ral range and is still very much in de-mand due to its exceptional handling, versatility and performance. The winning concept of the 25.6 for-med the basis for the prototype MINI AGRI 20.4, which meets the need for an even more compact vehicle that re-tains the already excellent versatility of

its predecessor. Extensively redesig-ned, the MINI AGRI 20.4 can be con-sidered a new model in every respect, with even more compact dimensions that enhance its suitability for working in extremely narrow spaces without sacrificing performance, roominess and comfort. The interior has been completely

reupholstered and features a different instrument layout that further impro-ves ergonomics. The overall lower weight enables the vehicle to accommodate a 50 hp Kubota engine with hydrostatic transmission (further reducing fuel consumption), which is housed in a newly designed engine compartment

that can be fully opened to facilitate inspection and maintenance. The hydraulic oil and diesel oil supply

is contained in two twin tanks, each with 60-litre capacity.

Also exhibited at EIMA will be the la-test model in the AGRI PIVOT line, the series of wheel loaders with tele-scopic boom produced in five models – T40, T60, T70, T80 and T90 – diffe-rentiated by their progressively incre-asing operating weights. Topping the lineup in terms of weight, dimensions and performance is the AGRI PIVOT T90, which is designed specifically to meet the high demand for a robust, high-performance vehicle capable of handling particularly demanding ta-sks and delivers decidedly superior productivity compared with other mo-dels. The T90 is not only an extremely compact vehicle, it is also the only articulated wheel loader in the world capable of reaching a lifting height of 7 metres. The boom has been considerably strengthened in propor-tion to its greater load and lifting per-formance. The Pivot can be fitted with various bucket types up to a capacity of 3 m3. The engine is a powerful and reliable FPT Stage4/Tier4 Final unit outputting 129 kW, with turbo diesel intercooler and common-rail electro-nic injection. The engine is installed longitudinally for improved maintenan-

ce access, with excellent lateral and rear visibility. All vital parts, such as the drive shaft and extension cylinder, are in a protected position, with pins and bushings protected by long-life seal gaskets. The Bosch Rexroth transmission is fully hydrostatic. All components offer excellent quali-ty and reliability, such as the power-assisted braking system and the in-ching pedal, which is indispensable for full control of forward speed, even with the engine at maximum revs. The safety and lifting equipment includes a load-limiting device and the new DCS (Descent Control System), which guarantees maximum boom lowering speed, even with the engine idling. The cab is one of the lowest abo-ve ground level in its category and is ROPS - FOPS approved. It is equip-ped with every safety device and has been designed to guarantee maxi-mum comfort, with openable roof, enhanced climate control system, TFT colour display and capacitive joystick with deadman sensor. The vehicle can be equipped with an au-tomatic weighing system on re-quest.

There is a big chunk of Italy in this cor-ner of South Africa. In Paleisheuwel, in the arid region north of Cape Town that leads to the Namibian desert, lies one of the largest solar power plants on the African continent. Built by Enel Green Power-TerniEnergia, Paleisheuwel Solar Park covers an area of 240 hectares and comprises 611,000 solar panels capable of pro-ducing 153 gigawatts of electricity per year, which are supplied to over 48,000 households in the area. Toge-

ther with the Tom Burke PV plant (also built by Enel Green Power-TerniEner-gia and located north of Pretoria, near the border with Botswana), it will be able to meet over 40% of the count-ry’s energy needs. South Africa is rich in minerals but has scarce hydrocar-bon resources. Until recently, electri-city was obtained almost exclusively from coal-fired power plants and the country’s only nuclear power plant, but production was barely sufficient to satisfy domestic consumption.

Even today, due to the undersizing of the national grid (a crippling lega-cy of the past), scheduled blackouts occur on a rolling basis. Today, thanks to a major drive to harness alternative energies (especially wind power and photovoltaic energy), things are ra-pidly changing, to the point that South Africa has begun exporting energy to neighbouring countries (Namibia, Bot-swana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swazi-land, Mozambique and Zambia) and is expanding its distribution network.

Page 20: APPOINTMENTS HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR EIMA INTERNATIONAL · Henri Charriere, the famous “Papillon” who was unjustly imprisoned and tried nine times to escape by crossing the jungle

20 No 3 October 2018

Participating in the construction of the plant was a sizeable contingent of Dieci L3500 and L4700 truck mixers supplied to TerniEnergia by Matpro, one of South Africa’s largest rental firms. They were used to build bases for the photovoltaic panels and the heavy transformers, which are needed to collect the generated power and feed it into the mains grid. The extre-mely rugged terrain, lack of local water (which is shipped to the site in tankers) and the vastness of the plant (over

240 hectares) are no obstacle to the DIECI truck mixers due to their unique features, which include good off-road capabilities to negotiate long uneven tracks (thanks to the four-wheel dri-ve and steering), and excellent load capacity and output (thanks to the 700-litre drum capacity and up to 3.5-m3 concrete yield). Also appreciated are their reverse driving capability and self-loading shovel (very useful for producing the required cement onsite without the need for assistance), as

well as trilateral unloading, which ena-bles mixture to be dispersed between rocks and thorny scrubland without needing to carry out complex mano-euvres. South Africa’s future energy roadmap envisages the construction of at least another five similar plants, which will also be designed by Enel Green Power-TerniEnergia, so you can bet that the DIECI truck mixers still have plenty more work to do.

Dieci vehicles are now so widespre-ad throughout the world, that they are involved in every kind of major project imaginable: from the construction of a large African dam and a remote scien-tific base in Antarctica, to South Ame-rican mines and the vast North Sea.However, we sometimes find them involved in small undertakings that,

upon closer investigation, actually re-veal themselves to be big initiatives full of human warmth, such as the Morayvia Science and Technology Ex-perience Project, a success story in which – we are delighted to report – our vehicles are playing a central part. Located in Moray on the Scottish co-ast, Kinloss is a small village with a population of only around a thousand

people. Since 1150 (around the year in which the abbey at its centre was built), the village’s inhabitants (mainly fishermen and farmers) had always lived in rural tranquillity, following the gentle rhythm of the passing seasons. But all that changed in 1937 (on the eve of the Second World War) when the Royal Air Force built a huge airport at the edge of the village: thousands of

men arrived at Kinloss to train, swelling the local population and transforming the inhabitants’ lives, customs and op-portunities forever. After the war, the ai-rport became the primary base for lar-ge Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft, and then for Sea King SAR (search and re-scue) helicopters, which over the years saved the lives of hundreds of sailors and workers on the numerous oil plat-forms scattered around this corner of the North Sea. But inexorably, the area was beset by budget cuts: in 2011 the RAF flag was lowered for the last time, flights ceased and the installations were sold to the army, which turned them into barracks for the Royal En-gineers. For some years later, the only

vestige of the village’s military past, which once had such a major impact on the life of the community, were the runways (used by the local flying club) and dozens of half-empty hangars. But the enterprising and determined inha-bitants of Kinloss had other ideas. In 2011, when the airbase was abando-ned, some volunteers recovered the fuselage of an abandoned Nimrod, restored it and exhibited it in a num-ber of rooms in the local school, left empty by the sudden withdrawal of the RAF personnel and their families: that was how the Morayvia Science and Technology Experience Project came about. Over time, the collection of me-morabilia grew to include numerous

invited to look but not to touch, the hundreds of youngsters who travel to the centre from all over the UK are warmly encouraged to climb aboard the aircraft (a dream come true for all boys. and even many adults), sit in the captain’s seat and touch, press and turn every steering wheel, pedal and switch within reach, encouraged by

other aircraft, vehicles and equipment related to the history of Kinloss (all re-stored by volunteers), before its sco-pe was expanded to encompass the preservation and dissemination of art, science and even astronomy, thanks to the addition of a small planetarium. In contrast to the conventional con-cept of a museum in which visitors are

the centre’s volunteers (practically the whole village!) who take turns to act as guides, restorers and maintenan-ce workers. The Morayvia exhibition project has been granted registered charity status and all revenue is inve-sted back into local community initia-tives and public services. The asso-ciation is open to all and anyone can

Page 27: APPOINTMENTS HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR EIMA INTERNATIONAL · Henri Charriere, the famous “Papillon” who was unjustly imprisoned and tried nine times to escape by crossing the jungle

27No 3 October 2018

make their own voluntary contribution in any form, which is what local firm Billy Miller Contractor and Plant Hire did: their Icarus 40.17 is periodically loaned to Morayvia for the transpor-tation, disassembly, restoration and reassembly of exhibited machines, as well as for the maintenance of the school buildings, a task that the local

council has delegated to the centre! It recently acquired a large Russian An-tonov An2 transport biplane, as well as a Sea King rescue helicopter that once operated from Kinloss. Thanks also to the work done by Bil-ly Miller’s Icarus, the Morayvia cen-tre has repeatedly hit the headlines, receiving full support from the local

government and the Scottish tourist board and, recently, a visit from Prin-ce Andrew (Duke of York and second son of Queen Elizabeth), who used to fly Sea Kings during his military care-er. Such a big success story for a little place and an example of what can be achieved with few resources, lots of perseverance and the right tools.

HALLINGPLASTWhen DEVELOPMENTis truly SUSTAINABLE

We have already reported on this part of the world before, as we con-stantly scour the globe documenting the countless applications of Dieci vehicles, but we return to Norway for another story that again involves the production of pipes, albeit a very spe-cial kind. The location is Kleivi, in the splendid natural setting of the Halling

valley (Hallingdal in Norwegian) and not far from Hallingskarvet National Park, a place of rolling coniferous fo-rests, rivers and lakes teeming with fish and rocky peaks rounded by gla-cial ice. The company is Hallingplast AS, the largest manufacturer of HA-LOCK extruded pipes – a special type of heat-weldable polyethylene pipe

used in the oil and fuel industry – and polypropylene pipes for water, gas, sewage and the hydroelectric industry.Allowing a factory to operate on the edge of a national park might seem a dubious decision, but Hallingplast fully meets Norway’s stringent pol-lution regulations and has obtained a whole series of international certi-

fications: the majority of the 15,000 tonnes of plastic pellets that the company processes every year co-mes from recycled material inside the plant, while the processing cycle and anti-pollution systems it adopts ensure that the only emissions relea-sed into the atmosphere are CO2 and water vapour; moreover, heat produ-ced by the extrusion process is fully reclaimed to generate over 550 kW

of energy annually for use in produc-tion processes! The international certi-fications also apply to the company’s core business, which is manufacturing HALOCK pipes: they are used to tran-sport fuel, gas and chemicals, and are universally appreciated for their safety, reliability and versatility. The pipe sec-tions are heat-sealed to each other in just a few seconds creating a virtually impenetrable, perfectly sealed pipeli-

ne that lasts for decades once buried in the subsoil. By international con-vention, the pipes are produced in 100- and 150-metre rolls, or in 6- and 12-metre sections up to 1 metre in dia-meter. Every day, tens of thousands of pipes leave the Halling plant to be used not only throughout Scandinavia, but also abroad, with deliveries to China, Chile, Angola and Australia. Handling such a mountain of material is no easy

feat, which is why Hallingplast has equipped itself with a number of Dieci vehicles (Samson 75.10 and Hercules 100.10) that are in action every day, transporting products from the pro-duction lines to the storage yards, where they load up numerous articu-lated lorries that transport the pipes to their destination. The lifting fork of the Samson and Hercules vehicles is ideal for loading lorries with 12-metre

sections of large rigid piping, which is mainly used for aqueducts and hydro-electric power stations. Flexible hoses are moved using a special loading bar that fits perfectly onto the end of our vehicles’ lifting boom. This year Hal-lingplast was involved in a pilot project in Asker, a suburb of Oslo, involving the wholesale replacement of old gal-vanised pipes belonging to the local aqueduct, which had been plagued

by continuous water loss due to cor-rosion and aging. The line was com-pletely renovated using pipes made by Hallingplast, which also provided technical advice. It is a great example of sustainable development achieved in concert with the local community by a cutting-edge company, which clearly made a smart decision in choosing our vehicles to handle its products.
