Computer use in Agribusiness

Computers can be used for a number of applications in the agriculture business.

Replace handwritten ledgers when used in accounting.

In management, computers can be used to produce flow charts and organize data.

The 5 main uses of computers

Telecommunications refers to the combination of the computer and the cell phone. Data from around the world can be

accessed almost instantly.

Education and training is available through computer programs and Internet websites.

E-commerce terminology

A vast new vocabulary has emerged with the popularity of electronic commerce and the world wide web.

Glossaries and dictionaries are located at several websites on the Internet to help define these terms.

Producers can now access management information instantly.

E-commerce terminology

The Internet is the computer network that provides communications and services to businesses and individuals worldwide.

The world wide web (www) is the most popular system used to find information on the Internet.

Understanding electronic commerce terms will help agribusiness owners better understand the significance of electronic commerce and its use in agribusinesses.

Network

In order to find and share information, computers must be linked into a network.

A network refers to the connection of two or more computers for the purpose of sharing information.

NetworkComputer users can share information via a network or while online with other computer users.

To be online is to be in contact with a local network or on the Internet.

To be offline is to work without a connection to a local network or the Internet.

Smart phones enable Ag. producers access at just about any time of day.

Computer safety

Computer and Internet safety is a concern for all computer users.

The commerce department is the government agency in charge of the exportation of cryptography.

Computer safety

Cryptography refers to encrypting and decrypting data for storage or transmission over computer networks or the internet.

Encryption means to put into code.

Decryption means to decode.

Computer safety

Secure web servers utilize encryption and decryption to transmit data safely over networks and the Internet.

Hypertext markup language (html) is the format used to send documents over the Internet.

Graphics

It is also possible to send and receive graphic information via computer networks and the Internet. Two examples of image transfer are the graphic interchange format and joint photographic expert group.

Types of image transfer

Graphic interchange format (GIF) is the standard format used to exchange graphics over the Internet. Joint photographic expert group (JPEG) is the standard format for exchanging graphic files over the Internet.

The costs of e-commerce

Electronic commerce can be a costly but efficient way to do business.

Costs can be overcome with increased revenue resulting from a wider customer base.

As computer usage in homes, schools and in vehicles/implements increases, electronic commerce has increased, also.

Producers buy, sell and trade via phone while on the job.

The costs of e-commerce

Costs related to electronic commerce include hardware, software, connections, personnel to handle marketing, accounting, and sales, and public relations and advertisement.Initial set-up costs in each of these areas may decrease after the first year.

Benefits of e-commerce

The benefits of electronic commerce should not be overshadowed by the initial investment.

Agribusiness has unlimited potential in the areas of sales, services, and auctions on the Internet.

Benefits of E-commerce

Purchases can be made quickly and easily and deliveries can be made overnight using the new “E” technology. Many farmers will adapt to changes in computer technology just as they adapted to changes in machinery technology.
