What is Optical Technology?

In general, Optical or Optical Technology refers toanything that relates to light or vision; whether it isvisible light or infrared light that performs a specificfunction.

For example:

Optical fiber is a type of wire commonly made out ofglass or plastic that carries light signals. Thesesignals can be interpreted by a computer as data.

Optical storage devices use optical technology tosave and retrieve data on discs.

Optical Mouse is another type of device that usesoptical technology.

Laser: Short for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, a laser is an intense beam of light first developed by Physicist Theodore Maiman May 16, 1960. The picture is an example of a blue laser looks inside a Blu-ray disc player.

Alternatively referred to as optical media and opticalstorage, an optical disc drive (ODD) or optical disk isany storage media that holds content in digital formatand is read using a laser assembly is considered opticalmedia. The most common types of optical media areBlu-ray, CDs, and DVDs.

The optical mouse is a computer mouse first introduced by

Microsoft on April 19, 1999 that utilizes light-emitting

diodes (LED) or laser to help track movement. These mice

are identified by examining the bottom of the mouse. As

seen in the picture the optical-mechanical mouse has a ball,

and the optical mouse has a light emitting from the bottom.

With hardware a scanner or optical scanner is ahardware input device that allows a user to take animage or text and convert it into a digital file, allowingthe computer to read or display the scanned object. Ascanner can be connected to a computer using USB,Firmware, Parallel, or a SCSI port. The picture shows anexample of a flatbed photo scanner, the Epson V300.

Optical technology can also used in some computers, wherecomputations are done using photons in visible or infraredbeams, instead of electric current.

Using this technology in a computer, called an opticalcomputer, allows for greatly increased computational speed.Since electric current flows at one tenth the speed of light, itmay someday be possible to have an optical computer thatprocesses data at ten times or more the speed of aconventional computer that uses electric current.

Intel is in the process of developing better optical computingtechnology, which would greatly improve computerperformance and reduce energy consumption.

We are living in the age of computing andcommunication. Now a days main target of on goingtechnology is speed and accuracy. Optical technology isthe main concern to develop this sector. So foruncompromising speed and accuracy there is noalternative of Optical Technology.
