CalibrationThe thermoplastic molten tube leaving the machine is cooled and, if necessary, calibrated under press quenching with the help of vacuum pumps.
Plastic weldingThe hot air that is needed for welding is heated to between 200° to 300°C using heating cartridges and is accelerated to a high velocity using a blower.
EPS foamingUsing a side channel blower, pre-expanded polystyrene balls are blown into a mold where steam is then applied. At final polymerization, the balls are cured into the molded compo-nent. To ensure that the molded components do not lose their shape when removed from the mold, they must be cooled with water. With the vacuum pumps, the water vaporizes in a flash.
Extruder degasification Vacuum pumps remove air pockets and moisture from the melted plastic mass. They extract all of the low-molecule substances, ensuring optimal quality: smooth surfaces, greater strength, better insulation capabilities and a lower outgassing rate.
Granulate conveyingPlastic molding presses / extruders are automatically loaded with the help of our blowers or vacuum pumps. For this purpose, a vacuum is produced in the material container. The granulate is conveyed through the air in the tube.
Contact-free plastic film redirection Continuous plastic sheets and films are redirected contact-free with air that is applied on turning bars.
Drying granulate Many synthetic materials are hygroscopic and their moisture content must be greatly reduced before they can be processed. This is achieved in so-called granulate dryers. Before the air is blown with a side channel compressor into the hopper containing the granulate, it is passed through drying containers containing a desiccant (e.g., Zeolite). This desiccant is regenerated in a separate process using a side channel compressor.
Cooling & drying extruder productsThe hot plastic material that is discharged from the extruder must be cooled down quickly. This is done using blast air or by cooling the material in a water bath, followed by a drying process.
Deaeration of rubber components / evacuationIn production stations that manufacture rubber components, vacuum is used for evacuating from the die cast mold thereby preventing the formation of air pockets and accelerating the rubber mass.
Gluing plastic partsIn the production of glued composite materials, panels are secured to each other with an adhesive and pressed into a sheet. The sheet sack is evacuated for this purpose, so that the atmospheric pressure can produce the required compression.
Vacuum and Pressure for Applications in the Plastics Industry

Air Applications in the Printing and Paper Industry
Pre-PressVacuum is required for a variety of applications in the pre-press area, such as preparing images and films for scanning or exposure and for copying printing plates. There are also many applications where over-pressure is needed as well, such as for guiding plates or film in automatic systems.
Pre-Press• Film fixing• Plate copy equipment• Printing plate processing• Scanner
PressIn classic sheet fed offset presses, vacuum and pressure are always needed for paper handling – at the feeder to separate the sheets, to feed the single sheets to the different color-aggregates or to guide the sheets through the machine.
Presses / Press Components • Drying aggregates• Ionization aggregates• Powder aggregates• Rotary offset machines• Sheet fed offset machines
Post-PressPaper processing covers a large number of activities and applications – most of which need vacuum or compressed air. The Elmo Rietschle product range is ideally suited here and our customers can take full advantage of the different technologies we supply. Typical examples are side channel blowers for folding and cutting machines, pressure-vacuum pumps and individual vacuum pumps and compressors for collating and book-binding machines or radial blowers for removing waste paper. Elmo Rietschle offers you the ideal solution for every application.
Post Press Machines / Post Press Components• Air-tables• Book binders• Cutting machines• Envelope sealing machines• Folding machines• Gripper systems• Loaders and unloaders for cutting machines• Mail sorting systems• Pallet air lifts• Paper stack lifts• Paper joggers

Vacuum packagingWhen packaging products, prior to sealing a vacuum pump is used to remove
air from the packaging.
Trim removalFilm strips that are cut off are sucked into a container.
Air cushion machinesFilm tubes are inflated with compressed air and welded together to form cushi-
ons. These cushions can be used as protective filling material.
Reduction of transport volumeClothes are shrink-wrapped to minimize space requirements in charge trucks
and containers.
Filling and closing unitsIn chamber and rolling machines vacuum is generated to suck off air from the
packaging. Afterwards the inert gas can be set free or the bag can be sealed.
EvacuationWhen bottling beverages, cosmetic or pharmaceutical products, the bottle is first
evacuated before being filled to make sure the product reaches the customer in
good quality or just to make fast filling possible.
Blister machinesBlister packaging is often vacuum generated.
Vacuum formingFor vacuum forming, an additional pump is needed at that part of the machine.
Carton erectingPre-cut cartons are opened and optionally glued on one side directly at the
packaging machine with the help of a vacuum pump and a feeder. Afterwards
they can be used as covering boxes i.e. for the transport of non-food articles.
Further Applications• Drying (Air Knifes)
• Holding
• Palletising
• Production of paper bags

Filling and closing machines When bottling drinks, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products, the recipient is frequently evacuated before being filled to ensure that the contents keep longer. Food to be canned is introduced through a tube into the chamber.
LabellingIn the labelling of containers made of glass, plastics or metal, vacuum pumps ensure the correct positioning of the labels during the cutting-out stage.
Degassing waterIn the production of high quality drinks (mineral waters, fruit juices etc.) water must be used which was previously degassed under vacuum in suitable systems.
Vacuum packaging Tray sealing machine
From stacking to evacuating and capping prefabricated trays, all processes take place under vacuum. For most applications packaging under oxygen as the pro-tective gas is the standard method.
Forming machine
During deep drawing processes, vacuum is needed in the sealing tool and in shaping the tray. Here again, the use of oxygen is an option.
Chamber machine
Classic initial packaging takes place in a chamber machine. All products are placed inside a bag by hand. In the next step they are manually inserted into the chamber machine and then sealed.
Trim removal
Edge trimmings and stamping waste are collected directly from the machine by an extractor fan (with waste container) or conveyed under vacuum over longer distances through a pipeline to a central collection point.
Food processing Vacuum filler
In a vacuum filling machine dough-shaped prepared foods such as meat, fish, cheese, bread, sausage etc. are separated into portions and packaged under vacuum. This improves homogenity and avoids air inclusions. Extended shelf life and excellent colour stability are further advantages.
Vacuum tumbler
In the vacuum tumbler, food cut into pieces such as meat, fish, salads, delicacies etc. is mixed with spices, worked and refined.
Vacuum cutter
The vacuum cutter is particularly suitable for the production of patés. Here again, the ingredients are mixed under vacuum in order to achieve a high degree of colour stability and homogeneity.
Other applications• Pick + place• Freeze drying• Pneumatic conveying

Suction vehicles for wastewater cleaningThe suction pressure necessary for removing wastewater and cleaning sewer networks is provided by vacuum pumps.
Digester gas compressionThe pump‘s operating liquid cools the digester gas by absorbing the heat of compression, thus providing an almost isothermal mode of operation. The cooling function of the operating liquid simultaneously acts as a flame arrester and reduces expenditures for explosion protection. The contaminated raw gas is cleaned, partially dried, oxygenated and returned to the wastewater treatment process.
Wastewater disposalUsing central vacuum systems wastewater can be collected, drained and disposed of in complete housing areas at the same time.
Biogas productionA thorough mixing of the sludge in the sludge tanks increases the gas yield and reduces its retention time in the reactor. During the process, the gas is withdrawn from the upper part of the digestion tower, compressed and reintroduced through the nozzles at the bottom.
Wastewater purification/oxygenation of activated sludge tanksCompressors supply the pressure required for maximum oxygen yield.
Fish and prawn pond aerationIn order to increase the water’s oxygen content, air is drawn from the atmosphere and forced through an inlet into the tube aerator. It is then diffused into the water through tiny openings and then rises in fine bubbles.
Compressed air in wastewater treatment plantsA thorough mixing of sludge with oxygen increases the gas yield and reduces its retention time in the tank.
Further Applications
• Evacuation systems
• Gas recirculation
• Small domestic sewage plants
• Drying systems

Dry blastingIn this process, the work piece is blow dried with a side channel blower. The flow volume and pressure of the air stream are critical for the degree of dryness. The temperature of the air stream also contributes to the effectiveness of the drying process.
Vacuum dryingWith vacuum drying, difficult spots such as blind bore holes, narrow lubrication channels and even internal passage ways can be dried completely, with no residual water remaining in voids or uneven surfaces.
In this process, a vacuum is created in the washing chamber. When the pressure drops below that of the vapor pressure of the fluid to be removed, the fluid evaporates and the parts are dried.
Most of the vapor removed is trapped in a condensate separator upstream of the vacuum pump. The residual vapor in the air is eliminated by the vacuum pump. Depending on how dirty the parts are, a water or solvent based detergent is employed. In some cases ATEX approved vacuum pumps are required for solvent based detergents, which may be explosive in nature.
Flood injection washing under vacuumIn this process, the air is first evacuated from the washing chamber. A pressurized injection fluid wash (16 bar) also cleans hidden hollow passages and undercuts.
De-oiling under vacuumIn this process, the components to be cleaned are placed in a vacuum chamber and heated by radiant heaters. The process temperature and pressure are adjusted so that any contamination on the components is vaporized.
