Application for AdmissionAll applicants must complete and submit the application

for admission including personal statement and Mannes

scholarship essay. Applications may be submitted through

the Unified Application for Music and Performing Arts Schools

at www.unifiedapps.org. Online applications are strongly

preferred over paper applications. Please contact the Office

of Admission if you require a paper application.

The Mannes Application fee is $100 and may be submitted

electronically with the online application. An additional $50

fee will be charged for admissions applications submitted

after the deadline. Applicants seeking to audition for two

concentrations are required to pay an additional $100

application fee. Mannes does not accept waivers of any kind

for the application fee.

Supplemental MaterialsOfficial Transcripts

Mannes requires official transcripts to certify previous

educational background. To complete this application, the

applicant must contact the secondary schools (high schools)

or colleges s/he has attended and have the official tran-

scripts sent to the Office of Admission. The transcripts must

be received by Mannes in a sealed and signed envelope.

Mannes defines a Transfer Student as anyone who has

matriculated at another college or university. Transfer

applicants who have completed fewer than 24 college credits

must submit both high school and college transcripts. Credits

for music courses taken elsewhere are not automatically

transferred, though credit may be given toward a Mannes

degree pending results of entrance test, interview, and

transcript evaluation.

Applicants to graduate programs should send only college

transcripts. Applicants for the Master of Music degree must

have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent upon

enrollment. Professional Studies Diploma applicants must

have completed a bachelor’s degree or conservatory diploma,

however, a master’s degree is recommended.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of reference are required for all applicants.

The first letter should be from a recent music teacher or

professional musician and should focus on the applicant’s

talent and performance ability. The second letter should be

from a teacher or guidance counselor who is familiar with

the applicant’s academic aptitude.

Official TOEFL Score

Mannes defines “first language” as the language of the

country in which a student has completed his or her primary

(elementary school) education. For applicants whose first

language is not English, an Official TOEFL score must be sent

from Educational Testing Service (ETS).

TOEFL scores must be no more than two years old. Scores

more than two years old will only be accepted if the applicant

has been studying in a college or university in the United

States since the test was taken. Applicants must submit a

letter of request in order to receive this exemption.

To locate a TOEFL testing center visit www.toefl.org or call (in

the United States) 1.800.go.toefl. Please allow 10 to 12 weeks

for the official test scores to arrive at Mannes. Schedule your

test dates accordingly. The New School/Mannes code is 2398.

All supplemental materials must be sent with a copy of the Application Materials Cover Sheet found at the end of this booklet or on the Unified Application website. The postmark deadline for official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and TOEFL scores is February 1. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted. To ensure the admission office receives your supplemental materials, we strongly recommend that you send them via certified mail or another traceable mail service. Please do not send any unsolicited materials such as headshots, reviews, concert programs, etc.

Application Procedures Prescreening

In order to be considered for a live in-person audition,

applicants for the piano, violin, cello, flute, and voice

concentrations must submit a prescreening recording.

Applicants for the composition concentration must

submit scores for review. Please see “Audition Repertoire

Requirements” section for details. All prescreening materials

must be clearly labeled with the applicant name and major

and postmarked by December 1.

Applicants for cello and flute concentrations must submit

their prescreening materials using ArtsApp software.

Instructions can be found on the online application at

www.unifiedapps.org.

Live Audition

A live audition is required of all applicants for undergraduate

degrees or diplomas, for all master of music applicants,

and for the majority of the professional studies diplomas.

Beginning this year, international applicants for the PDPL

will be allowed to audition by DVD in all majors except the

following: piano, voice, violin, flute, composition, theory,

collaborative piano, and conducting.

Musicianship Exam and Interviews

All applicants to Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science,

Undergraduate Diploma and Master of Music programs

are required to complete a musicianship placement exam

during the audition period. Professional Studies Diploma

applicants to the composition, conducting, theory, and

collaborative piano concentrations must also complete the

placement exam. These exams consist of several sections.

The Mannes Office of Admission will provide detailed

descriptions and instructions for all exams and interviews

upon invitation to a live audition.

English Placement Exam

Applicants who have submitted a TOEFL score of 100

or higher on the Internet test or 250 or higher on the

computer test will not be required to take the Mannes

English Placement Test. All other applicants whose first

language is not English are required to take the Mannes

English Placement Test. The Mannes English Placement

Test assesses an applicant’s reading comprehension,

writing facility, and verbal communication skills.

Further InformationScholarship & Financial Aid

The Mannes merit-based scholarships are awards given in

recognition of a student’s outstanding talent, ability, and

achievement. Aptitude in the major field of study is the

primary criterion, although the Scholarship Committee also

considers academic standing. Students who remain in good

standing may expect their award to be continued throughout

their program.

Applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents

and seek need-based financial aid must complete the

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.

fafsa.ed.gov. The New School administers all federal and

state financial assistance programs (Federal Pell Grant,

Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants, Work-Study

Programs, Federal Perkins Loan, etc.). The New School

FAFSA code is 002780.

Notification

Please be aware that e-mail will be the primary means of

communication between the Mannes Office of Admission

and applicants. Mannes will contact applicants via the

e-mail address used in completing the online application. We

recommend that applicants alter e-mail spam filters in order

to allow e-mails from both [email protected]

and [email protected].

The Admission Committee will make final acceptance

decisions only after the receipt of all the required materials,

an in-person audition, and the completion of entrance

examinations and interviews when applicable. Scholarship

and financial aid award information will accompany

application results. Transfer applicants will be notified of a

projected graduation date upon acceptance.

International Applicants

The New School and Mannes College The New School for

Music are approved by the United States Department of

Justice as accredited institutions of higher learning for

international students registered in full-time degree and

diploma programs.

Upon request, the Admission Office will provide a letter for

international applicants to present to the United States

Consulate or Embassy when applying for a tourist visa in

order to attend the in-person audition. Although consulate

practices vary from country to country, applicants should ask

for a “Prospective Student” annotation on the B-1/B-2 Visa.

Page 4: Application Instructions

This action may assist the process of changing visa status

later, if that becomes necessary.

All applicants with international transcripts are required to

submit an original transcript along with a certified English

language translation. Applicants who would like to transfer

academic credits earned at non-U.S. institutions are also

required to have their transcript(s) evaluated by World

Education Services (www.wes.org), our preferred provider,

or another member of the National Association of Credit

Evaluation Services (NACES). A Course-by-Course Evaluation

Report must be prepared for each transcript. We recommend

that you start the evaluation process as early as possible

and submit all required documents to WES (or another

provider) to ensure the timely completion of your evaluation

report. Request that your report be sent to Mannes College

The New School for Music, Office of Admission, 150 West

85th Street, New York, NY 10024. If you apply online, search

for “New School Mannes” when requesting our institution.

If another provider is unable to send the report directly to the

school, please collect and send the evaluation report along

with a Materials Cover Sheet.
