CELEBRATING THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

Dear Gleeson College Families,

To say Term 1 is a busy term is definitely an understatement. There seem to be so many events packed into the first few weeks of school and the pace is not slowing down.

This week we had our first Academic Award Assembly, which saw our Year 12 Graduates from 2017 returning to receive recognition for their outstanding achievements. It was very special to be able to celebrate the efforts of those students who received Merits in individual subjects, an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 90 or more,

along with those who were named Dux of Subject. The Dux of the College for 2017, Lucy Keatch, was presented with the Thomas Medal by our inaugural Principal, Dr Vin Thomas (pictured right) and our current Principal, 30 years on, Mr Andrew Baker.

Our current Years 9-11 students who were academically in the Top 10% of their Year Level in Semester 2 last year were also acknowledged, along with a number of accelerated students who achieved excellent results in subjects undertaken at least one year above their chronological year level.

Relay for LifeThis weekend some 100 Gleeson College students (present and past) and staff will be involved in the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life. This event is

dear to the heart of our College and our fundraising efforts for a cancer cure are legendary. This year the Cancer Council has asked Gleeson College to take a greater part in the organisation of the event and so we are running the novelty events and our APRIM, Mr Adam Cibich, is leading the Candle Lighting Ceremony on Saturday night.

This is a very special event for us and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students, staff and families that represent Gleeson College so well at the Relay for Life.

Athletics Carnival Next WeekI would like to draw your attention to this fantastic community event that will be held on Friday 2 March, weather permitting. This year, due to our building works, we will be holding our Athletics Carnival at Tilley Reserve. We are looking forward to a great day and hope that some parents may be able to come along as well.

In the following weeks we will hold our annual Open Night, then the Year 8 Camp, then the Year 7 Camp and then it is Easter, Parent Teacher Interviews, Reports … wow!

Mr Joe Corbo,Deputy Principal

WORKING TOGETHER FOR YOUR CHILD > R-12 Catholic Education in the North EastIt is no secret that the North East of Adelaide is a special place. The com-munities and families that have grown up here over the years proudly call this home. The space and identity that we enjoy make this an enviable place to live, work and raise families.

Gleeson College and the three other Catholic schools in this region rec-ognise this and strive to give you what you want for your children: a good education, in a safe environment, with quality teaching in a faith based environment. All of us aim to be attentive to each child’s needs.

You may see us advertise together because we believe a strength of our region is the bond we have enables us to provide a pathway from Reception right through to Year 12. We are developing and sharing resources so that we can collectively provide what your child deserves.

The fact that this is the first region in Adelaide where Catholic schools offer a transition to Year 7 in high school shows we are doing something right! We are recognised for the simple fact that we “work together for your child”. We also work with you as parents: you are the first educators of your children and we want you to tell us if there is something that will help us know your child even better.

It promises to be a great year as in 2018 as we reach even greater heights.

Andrew Baker, Principal - Gleeson College> Together with Leonie De Garis, Principal - St Francis Xavier’s Regional Catholic School, Leanne Lawler, Principal - Saint David’s Parish School and Ashley Keane, Principal - Our Lady of Hope School

STUDENT LEADERSHIP CAMP 2018 > Challenging Mind + Body!Last Sunday morning, the 2018 Student Leadership Team commenced their Leadership Camp at Adelaide Shores Caravan Park. An amazing group of students were accompanied by some lucky staff members, who enthusiastically supported the group, guided their conversations and ensured lots of fun was had!

During the day on Sunday, there was an opportunity to get to know the other leaders in a series of games, and the chance to practice our public speaking, brainstorm ideas for the year and have some free time. After dinner that night, the team gathered for a sunset beach walk, where they had the opportunity to reflect on the work already done, and the work that is to come throughout this year as their time as a leader. Upon the end of their reflections, it was time to relax with friends and take some funny pictures that will last a lifetime. Then it was time for the Quiz Night, where students dressed up in retro costumes and battled in their House groups for supremacy! Many laughs were shared before going to rest in our dorms after a fun-filled, yet exhausting day.

On Monday morning, the group rose early to prepare for the exciting time ahead at the Mega Adventure Park. The walk over was filled with chatter between the now strengthened friendships. Upon arrival, many of the students realised they would be facing their fears that day, scaling the multiple story high structure with many suspended challenges along the way. The students’ newly-formed bonds came in handy, as the leaders helped each other through some of the challenges. Together, some students managed to tackle their fear of heights! After finishing the ascent to the top of the monolithic structure there was only one way to get down - the group individually started their 20 metre decent by jumping off the tower and landing safely at the bottom!

After conquering the Mega Adventure Park, it was time to pack up the campsite, hop on the bus and return home. As the adventure came to a close, there was much reflection on the time spent together over the two days of camp, as well as wishing that the

camp could go on for just one more day. Well done to all students on their enthusiastic participation at our 2018 Student Leadership Camp.

Mr Shannon Bertram,Assistant Principal – Student Development

2017 DUX OF COLLEGE SPEECH > Breaking the 90+ ATAR Stigma!

Dr Thomas, Mr Baker, Distinguished Guests, Staff and Students of Gleeson College,

Five years ago I sat in this crowd as a shy little Year 8, oblivious to the challenges, the enjoyments, the tears and the success that I now look back on as 2017 Dux of College. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the other award recipients present here today as well as the Class of 2017 for their excellent results last year. Over the past five years I have grown with this diverse group of people and it excites me to see where the next short five years could take us. I would particularly like to congratulate my friend and Proxime Accessit, Kyle Sauerwald, for his exceptional results and also thank him for his support and selflessness. I am so grateful to be friends with someone who is so incredibly intelligent and inspiring. Kyle well and truly was the person who supported me the most during the toughest moments of Year 12.

I would also like to thank the teachers at Gleeson throughout the last five years, but most importantly my Year 12 and Care Group teachers. I would like to thank Mrs McCarthy for teaching me that nominalisation is the key to all my word count problems, Mrs Williams for teaching me Maths I can actually apply to real life, like superannuation and taxes, Mr Cibich for teaching me that there’s help waiting around every corner of Gleeson, Mrs Margitich and Mrs Holl for teaching me that your Care Group is your family, Ms Ruthven for teaching me that you can still get an A in Chemistry if you blow up your first summative practical and Mrs Condo and Ms Spiro for teaching me to have confidence in myself and the work I produce.

I would also like to thank someone who has showcased what it takes to be that 0.05% smarter, my sister Olivia. Olivia has taught me so much about myself and has been my greatest inspiration and role model throughout the last few years. I will be forever grateful for her words of wisdom, for telling me the science behind everything, for letting me ask her one thousand questions about Chemistry at 12am the night before the test and for being right beside me when Year 12 was taking its toll. I would also like to thank

my parents for their endless support and believing in me throughout my entire schooling journey. I can always count on Dad to give me advice beyond the wisdom of anyone I have ever met and I can always count on Mum to be the first person to offer me help when I need it.

My biggest fear of Year 12 was having seen the way my sister achieved her results two years prior and then realising I was doing the polar opposite. Olivia would be in bed by 8pm most nights, while I spent my last three weeks of Year 12 up until 3am doing Art. While this is probably the last thing teachers want to be hearing and I strongly discourage this kind of sleeping pattern, I, unlike my sister, am apparently extremely productive at night. Olivia was eating fruit smoothies, exercising three times a week and doing yoga as often as she could, meanwhile I ate donuts for breakfast and napped for two hours after school most days. Again while I would not recommend this, my point is to not be disheartened by the way other people achieve their goals. Finding what suits you best and having faith in the way you achieve is a crucial element for success. Of course I applied other methods during Year 12 to achieve to the best of my abilities, such as planning my days down to the tee with planners, starting assignments the moment I received them which generally allowed me to hand in drafts earlier than they were due and asking my teachers endless questions. All these were tactics I explored in my younger high school years to then discover how I best achieved in my senior years. I would also recommend

students to take all the opportunities that they are given to extend themselves. For example, I was given the opportunity to complete year 12 IPP in Year 11. Completing this subject helped me to prepare myself for what was in store for Year 12, but also reduced the stressed I had for my Year 12 subjects last year.

I have always felt there is this stigma about the types of jobs that 90+ ATARs go into, but they are simply not for me. When you think of a Dux of College, you think of aspiring lawyers, doctors and engineers, very rarely would you think of an aspiring artist. Naturally I felt under some pressure to choose a different degree or career that was more stereotypical of a higher ATAR and to start my course straight away. However this year I have decide to follow my passion, embarking on a gap year to focus on my art career and to save money if I eventually do go back to tertiary studies.

My advice for the students of Gleeson College is to stick to your passion, especially if you have had the pleasure of discovering it at such an early stage of your life. Never allow other’s ideas of how your life should unfold dictate your life goals and aspirations. I am forever grateful for the opportunities and the support I have received throughout my time at Gleeson College. I will remember my journey at Gleeson with very high regard and even though I was certain I wouldn’t, I do miss coming here everyday already. Thank you.

Lucy Keatch,2017 Dux of College

YEAR 7 HOME ECONOMICS > Sewing Pin Cushions Mini ProjectYear 7 Home Economics students have spent the last few weeks mastering basic hand sewing skills to make two handmade pincushions.

In this mini project, students practised the following basic sewing techniques:

• Understanding pattern markings• Cutting patterns (using paper/all-

purpose scissors – plastic handles)• Pinning - ouch!• Cutting fabric (fabric scissors –

orange/brown metal handles)• Threading needles - good hand-

eye coordination development• Tying double and single thread

knots - a challenge for many students

• Running stitch• Gathering fabric• Filling a project with stuffing• Tying off• Whip stitch/overstitch• Sewing on buttons - an essential

LIFE SKILL• Using the right needle for the right

thread

This week we put on our ‘L plates’, and are learning to use the sewing machines and cut out our first major sewing project, a BBQ apron. Students are finding parts of this practical subject challenging, but everyone is having a go!

Great work Year 7s!

Mrs Lina Russo,Year 7 Home Ec Teacher

CERT. III FITNESS CLASS HIT THE GROUND RUNNING IN NEW EFM GYM2018 marks the third year for the popular VET Certificate III Fitness

course at Gleeson College. Students are lucky to have the opportunity

to complete this qualification at the College with a Qualified Industry

Trainer/Assessor and have a brandnew EFM gym to learn and train in!

Throughout the course students learn the skills and knowledge required to be a gym or group fitness instructor

and can gain employment in the fitness industry upon successful completion.

This week students have been participating in a class challenge task competing against each other for the best times and results in some fitness

tests. The activity has brought out the competitive, strong-willed and

determined nature in students, which is required to be successful in this

industry.

As part of their qualification students also complete 30 hours of practical

work placement, so you may see some Gleeson students out in our local

community over the coming months.

The course is open to Year 11 and 12 students that are keen to work in the fitness industry or pursue a career in

the sport and recreation field.
