Page 2: APPETITE FOR PILLS? - Verbraucherzentrale.de...balanced diet. They have their most beneficial effects in natural food, in combination with all ingredients. Nutritional supplements

If there is an apparent lack of time for a balanced diet or doubts arise about the quality of the food on offer in supermarkets, many promisingly advertised nutritional supplements become interesting. But what actually are the benefits of vitamin pills and similar products?

Nutritional supplements are legally defined as concen-tratesofnutrientsorothersubstances,oftenintheformofcapsulesortablets,whichareintendedtosupplementthenormaldiet.Therefore, in legal terms, theyarenotmedicationsbutfood.Unlikemedications, whichare intended tohealorpre-ventillnesses,nutritionalsupplementsarenotsubjecttoanyregulatoryapprovalprocedure,inwhichthebenefitsandrisksaretestedbeforetheyenterthemarket.Nutri-tionalsupplementsmaynotbeputupasmedicationsoradvertisedwithpromisesofhealing.

Providersofnutritionalsupplementsoftenfuelconsumerfearsof themnotbeingsufficientlyprovidedwithvitalnutrients. Fruits andvegetables, for instance, are sup-posedlylowerinnutrientsnowadaysthantheyusedtobeduetodepletedsoilsasaresultofintensivefarming

methods.Thereality,however,isratherdifferent:nei-therarethesoilsdepleted,nordoesfoodcontainfewernutrients.Germanyisnotavitamin-deficientcountry.

Despitebeinglegallyclassifiedassuch,nutritionalsup-plementsinfactdifferfromconventionalfoodproducts.As they contain nutrients in a concentrated/isolatedform,overdosesaremorelikely.Forexample,ithaslongsincebeenknownthattheintakeofadditionalamountsofbeta-carotenebysmokersmayfacilitatelungcancer.IfwomentaketoomuchvitaminAduringtheinitialweeksofpregnancy,theyriskdevelopmentaldisordersinthechild. Products containing high levels of antioxidativevitaminsA,CandEforprotectionagainstcardiovasculardiseasesarealsonotrecommended.Certaintraceele-ments,suchasiron,shouldonlybetakenintheeventofaprovendeficiencyandonlyafterconsultationwithadoctor,duetotherisksassociatedwithanuncontrolledintake.Inaddition,anexcessofindividualnutrientscaninterferewiththeabsorptionofothernutrients(calciumandmagnesium;plantsterolsandfat-solublevitamins).Furthermore, interactionswithmedicationarepossible–forexample, ironblockstheabsorptionofthethyroidhormone thyroxine if takenat thesame time.Personswishing to takenutritional supplements in addition totheirmedication should therefore always consult theirdoctororpharmacistbeforehand.

Theseothersubstancesareconsumedinnutritionalsup-plementsinaconcentrated/isolatedformandcannotcat-egorically be assumed to be harmless. The ConsumerAdviceCentresthereforedemandthat:• manufacturersprovethatanutritionalsupplement

presentsnohealthrisktoanypopulationgroup(includingpotentialriskgroups),beforetheyenterthemarket(positivelistsrequired!).

• manufacturersprovethebenefitspromisedfortheproduct.

TheEuropean legislativebodyhas reactedto thewiderangeoffoodswithunprovenhealthclaimsbyadoptingthe Regulation on Nutritional and Health Claims. It isintendedtoensurethathealthclaimscanonlybemadeiftheadvertisedbenefitshavebeenproven.Butthereisacatchhere:Sofar,theEuropeanCommissionhasonlyapprovedspecificstatementsonvitaminsandmineralsaswellasafewothersubstances.Thelargenumberofadvertisingpromisesrelatingtoherbalsubstanceshavesofarremainedunevaluatedandmaycurrentlystillbeused.

ThesoleregulationattheEuropeanleveldealswiththetypeofvitamins,mineralsubstancesandtraceelementcompoundsthatmaybeadded.Nospecificationsexisttodateregardingthemaximumquantities.Nospecificregulationsexistconcerningthenumerousothersub-stancestobefoundinnutritionalsupplements.Theseinclude:• plantpreparations,so-calledbotanicals(suchasginkgo),• secondaryplantcompounds(suchasphytoestrogens),• aminoacidsandtheircompounds (suchasL-carnitine,glucosamine),• naturaloils(suchasfishoil,eveningprimroseoil),• productsofanimalorigin (suchassharkcartilage,musselextracts),• algae,gelatine…

t RISKS AND SIDE-EFFECTS

BIG PROMISES – SMALL BENEFITS

Atfirstsight, nutritionalsupplements, oftenadvertisedaspurelyherbal, appear tobenaturalandharmless. In fact: It is these preparations in particular, whicharesoldviatheinternet, thatcancontainsubstanceshazardous to health, some of them having strongpharmacologicaleffects.Oftenthesepreparationsareonlyexposedbychance;eitherbyrandomtestingorwhenhealthdamageoccuredafterintake.
