To Sir Constantine Huygens, Knight, Secretarie to the Lords the Ambassadors
from the States of ; united Provinces of the Netherlands to his Ma.tte of G. Britaine
I dare not with the same nor tongue nor art, Thy Constant Muse hath spoke in, act the part Of gratefull admiration ; but must stand A while amaz'd, before I take in band To speake that little of your Muse or Iove (Which both, it seemes, religiously have strove Which most should honour Oxford) that rny pen Can speake, untaught to utter, though to men Of such high ranke, and yet in worth more high; Yet is there something in me bids rne try, Try wth a trernbling pen and barren line T' expresse sorne thankfulnesse to Constantine; Whose learn'd invention graced hath so much Our Hills, that they begine to think them such;

154 APPENDIX
For 'tis an argument that strongly proves Things worthy, WCh a man so worthy loves. Where was thine owne deare Country, happie States, Whose resolution makes them of their fates Sole Lords; they, they, weh do inherite Such soules within their breastes they best do merit, A Poet so equall to such ample worth. Or if thou would'st some learned fame sett forth, Mee thinkes thy swift winged Nuse should take hir flight Over the floud, and bring fresh to thy sight With ravishing amazement that deare place Where shee with thee first entred into grace, Where thou didst fully tast the Thespian spring, That farr fam'd Hage, shee who to light doth bring Such lights to th' leamed world; 'twas only shee, Could best deservetobe describ'd by Thee; For whome; if yet nought eise gave hir a name, Thou wert nourisht, that's enough for fame. Whose glory though thy modest pen refraine To tell at large, yet didst thou that, for gaine For praise to hir: for who can read thy verse, But he must presently hir praise rehearse, Which taught thee others so to dignifie! Farne so neglected proves fames usury: Forthis hir glory didst thou hoard in store, By praising others, to praise hir the more. Hearke now ye groves, ye Woods, and all the walkes, Where with hirnself (as with a world) oft talkes A schollar's melancholy; Hearke, sacred streame, Flow softly, Isis, for (hearke) thou art the theame Of late unto a sacred Belgike quill, Which charmes thee to the top thy banckes to fill, And looke how he thy flood doth make out-shine Thine, prouder Tamesis, or, Ister, thine: Slide softly then, if verses have the power To charme, be thou charm'd from this hower; Mixe not wth other streames, be it thy charge The Muses floate on thee, on them the barge; Under which ruder burthen though they swell WitllWine or oile,-yetmayihyiloo<:tthemi-ell, All that could never yet inflame the sprite Of learn'd Hughenius their praise to write; N or all the swans that in Thames' channel floate, Should they at once all take on dying note, And all at once conspire with destiny; Thou shalt not change that song, he sung to thee, Forthat of theirs; that song, in which do stand
APPENDIX
Thy towers, Woolsey, lofty, as thine hand Did first intend them; o too hastie rage Of fate, to make those buildings still the stage Of ruin's Tragedy; great towers, must you yeeld To fall ere up? Woolsey, is this to build? Pardon, o reverend Prelate; 'tis not thy stone Yields to oblivion; o wer't that alone, The griefe were lesse, but now thy memory In rankes of founders must forgotten bee. I here could ev'n forgett my seife, and show A gratefull anger, but your Muse saith No, And caries me from this imperfect sight To Bodley's Vatican; there, there's delight To dwell fore ever in there doth thy straine Rise equall to the place, and thy riche vaine Fraught wth that learned wealth doth seeme to bee In that description a new library. First thou our bookes, then dost thou reade our men Rappie to be describ' d by such a pen, By such a pen, which farre adorns them more, Then goune, or scarlet, yea and all the store Of reverend ornament; T'is not the goune, But worth, makes knowne the Doctor from the clowne. 0 were I now as full of sacred fire , As thou wert, when thou first began'st t'admire Our Helicon; could I with thee keepe pace, And with an holy melancholy trace Thee on to Woodstock, and there call Hughenius, The Echo answers, happie genius Which so express'd Eliza prison'd here, That still mee thinkes Eliza's prison'd there. Sure there thou found'st , and drank'st, and best canst teil That there's no Rosamonds but Minervas' weil. So full of Oxford thou, so truly borne Heire to the Muses, that a religious scorne Neglects those bubbles, those vain-glorious showes, Those waves of honour, with which London flowes: Allthese to Thee seeme truly, as they are, Emblemes of Vanity; whilst thy learned care Still busied for thy countries Iove, and zeale Wholly ta'en up with that, yet must reveale What Iove Thou bear'st the Muses; for which Iove May Pallas to Thee or thy country prove Bellona never, never may shee shine In fearfull army, about those Lands of thine Be shee Minerva still, and, laying downe All other titles, may shee wreathe a crowne

156 APPENDIX.
Of Laurell for thee; which, whilest thou shalt weare, No noise of Warre or Thunder shall come neere To irke thy peacefull Muse; and this, whilest Thou Do'st from thy serious taske thy seife allow To grace the Muses here a little time, And vindicatest poesie from the crime, That Ignorance and Barbarisme staine Hir face withall, as if that only vaine To fidlers, plaiers, balladers belongs. All these thy Verse confutes, and so those wrongs To verse are lessen'd for which maiest thou receive Thanks from some richer pen, to which I leave Thee as a theame, too large to undertake Or to go farre in. yet for Oxford's sake Accept these meane spoke thanks: when better come, Mine harsh tun'd notes forever will be dumbe. To Thee I wish, what thime owne well fraught minde Can cause, that thou in all climes maiest finde An Oxford; foraman so learn'd as thee Can make each place an University.
