The Southampton University Sports Ground at Wide Lane in Eastleigh also is the home base for: o Southampton Mustangs Baseball - 30 adult, 15 junior (all males) playing on the grass football/rugby pitches at Wide Lane Sports Ground on Sundays in summer
season (seasonal hire). The club rates the playing facilities as good (4/5) but the changing facilities at this site as poor (1/5). Looking to grow by a further two teams (three currently). The club seeks to secure a permanent field with access to good quality changing, toilet and social facilities to be able to raise income to sustain and further grow the club through sponsors etc to purchase kit and maintain fees at affordable rates to attract more junior players.
o Southampton Stags American Football Team - Currently competing in BUCS South Division 2A, the Stags are 4 time National Champions and were National Finalists
in 2012. Training Times on the 3G pitch are: Tuesday 7:30-10pm; Thursday 7:30-10pm; Sunday 10-1pm.

Pitch Audit
Match Equivalent Sessions In accordance with the Sport England Guidance Methodology for the preparation
of Playing Pitch Strategies, Match Equivalent Sessions are used as a common unit for the purpose of comparing the carrying capacity of playing pitches with their use in order to establish whether a playing pitch site has spare capacity or is being used beyond its carrying capacity and therefore risking deterioration to the quality of the pitches.
The three main natural turf playing pitch sports national governing bodies (ECB,
FA, RFU) have each developed a methodology for calculating Match Equivalent Sessions (of pitch carrying capacity and use) appropriate to their sport. Carrying Capacity is a measure of the amount of play each natural turf pitch can take without adversely affecting its quality and use.

The NGBs' respective methodologies are summarised as follows: Cricket: The Carrying Capacity of each natural turf cricket pitch is determined by:
1. The size of the square - i.e. the number of batting strips or 'wickets' on the square that can be prepared and played in the season. (Typically the size of a square will range from 6 to 12 natural turf wickets). 2. The quality of the pitch - for the purposes of preparing a Playing Pitch Strategy, pitch quality is assessed on the basis of a non-technical visual assessment
undertaken on a site visit during the playing season using a standard checklist
proforma of key criteria - e.g. surface evenness, grass cover, wicket hardness - prepared by the ECB. The ECB has published the following guidance on the number of match equivalent sessions a season that a natural grass pitch is likely to be able to regularly accommodate, based on an agreed quality rating, without adversely affecting its
current quality:
Agreed Pitch Quality Rating
Number of Match Equivalent Sessions Per Wicket in a season
GOOD 5
STANDARD 3
POOR 1
Example: A playing field has a cricket pitch assessed on a site visit and agreed with the NGB as conforming to a STANDARD quality rating. The size of the square is 10 natural turf wickets. The Carrying Capacity (MES of play) in a cricket season is 3x10wkts =30. Match Equivalent Sessions of Use are aggregated from the number of cricket matches, training or coaching sessions that take place on the natural turf pitch in
a season whether by community club teams or schools/colleges, plus estimates of any known informal or unauthorised use. Example: A site has one natural turf pitch used by a club team for 16 home Saturday league fixtures and by friendly teams for 10 short form (20/20) fixtures in a season either midweek or on Sundays (equivalent to 5 full matches). All
training and junior games take place on a non-turf wicket or in a non-turf net
provided on this site. There is no schools use of the natural turf pitch. It is a secured site so there is no informal/unauthorised use. The Estimated Use (MES of play) in the cricket season is 16 full matches + 10 limited over matches (10/2=5) = 21. Conclusion - some spare capacity (GREEN RAG rating)
Football: The Carrying Capacity of each natural turf football pitch is determined by: 1. The size/type of pitch - i.e. whether the pitch is for adult use, youth/junior use or for minisoccer, or for a combination (i.e. over marked with different coloured lines).
2. The quality of the pitch - for the purposes of preparing a Playing Pitch Strategy, pitch quality is assessed on the basis of a non-technical visual assessment undertaken on a site visit during the playing season using a standard checklist proforma of key criteria - e.g. surface evenness, grass cover, slope - prepared by the FA.

The FA has published the following guidance on the number of match equivalent sessions a week that a natural grass pitch is likely to be able to regularly accommodate, based on an agreed quality rating, without adversely affecting its current quality:
Agreed Pitch Quality Rating
Adult football Youth football Mini soccer
Number of Match Equivalent Sessions a Week
GOOD 3 4 6
STANDARD 2 2 4
POOR 1 1 2
Example: A playing field has one adult football pitch assessed on a site visit and agreed with the NGB as conforming to a STANDARD quality rating, two GOOD quality rated youth football pitches and one POOR mini soccer pitch. None are over marked for smaller sided games. None are floodlit. The Carrying Capacity (MES of play) of the site for football in a week in season is Adult Pitch (1pitch x2) = 2; Youth Pitches (2pitches x4) = 8; Minisoccer (1pitch
x2) = 2. Site total = 12. Match Equivalent Sessions are aggregated from football matches, training or coaching sessions that take place on each of the natural turf pitches in a typical week in season whether by community club teams or schools/colleges, plus any
known informal or unauthorised use.
Example: The adult football pitch is hired on alternate Saturday afternoons to two league teams and to one Sunday morning league team. These three adult teams play their home league matches on this site. The two youth football pitches and mini soccer pitch are hired to a youth football club for the season. The club programmes two age group home games or training sessions each week on both the youth pitches on a Saturday morning plus weekly mini soccer games or training
for u7 and u8 programmed back to back on the mini soccer pitch. For the majority of the season the clubs hire midweek training times on a floodlit 3G pitch nearby. No schools use the pitches in the football season. It is an open site in an urban area and the playing field is regularly used outside the hired times for informal games. The Estimated Use (MES of play) each week in the football season is:
Adult pitch (1 pitch x 3 teams x 0.5 home games a week) + estimate of informal
use equivalent to one adult match = 2.5 Youth pitches (2 pitches x 2 homes games or a training session each week) + estimate of informal use equivalent to one youth match on each pitch = 6 Mini soccer pitch (1 pitch x 2 home games or a training session each week) + estimate if informal use equivalent to one mini soccer match = 3. Site total = 11.5.
Conclusion - site played close to capacity overall (AMBER RAG rating) with some overplay of adult and mini soccer pitches and some spare capacity on youth pitches. Rugby Union: The Carrying Capacity of each natural turf rugby union pitch is determined by:
1. The type and adequacy of the pitch drainage
2. The level of maintenance of the pitch The RFU has published the following guidance on the number of match equivalent sessions a week that a natural grass pitch is likely to be able to regularly accommodate, based on agreed quality ratings for both drainage and
maintenance, without adversely affecting its current quality:

Natural Adequate (D1) 1.5 2 3

Pipe and Slit Drained (D3) 2 3 3.5 The maintenance (M) scores of the pitches are either M0 (poor) where it is indicated that required action is 'significant improvements to maintenance
programme’, M1 (adequate) where required action is 'minor improvements to maintenance programme’ or M2 ('good maintenance'). A score of M0 is recorded if the type of maintenance regime is unknown. Drainage (D) ratings are recorded as D0 (natural inadequate) where required action is 'pipe drainage system needed on pitch’, D1 (natural adequate) where
required action is 'pipe and slit drainage needed on pitch’ or D2 (pipe drained) where required action is 'slit drainage needed on pitch’. D3 is a pipe and slit drained pitch, where no action is needed. A score of D0 is recorded if the type of drainage is unknown.
Example: A rugby ground has two rugby pitches and operates an adequate pitch maintenance programme. The first team pitch is pipe drained (and equipped with
training standard floodlights). The second pitch drains naturally and assessed as adequate. The Carrying Capacity (MES of play) of the site for rugby in a week in season is 1st Pitch (M1/D2) = 2.5; 2nd Pitch (M1/D1) = 2. Site total = 4.5. Match Equivalent Sessions are aggregated from rugby matches, training and coaching sessions that take place on the pitches in a typical week in season
whether by community club teams or schools/colleges, plus any known informal or unauthorised use. Match equivalents for mid week and Sunday training sessions assume on average that age groups from u7 to u13s (minis/midis) share an adult pitch and cause less wear as they are lighter and play for shorter duration reflecting RFU age
group playing regulations. Example: A club has two adult men's teams, a vets team both playing occasional games, a colts team and mini/midi teams in each age group from u7 to u13. The two adult teams each play one home fixture a week on average and train together under lights on the first team pitch once a week. The colts team plays its home matches on the 2nd pitch (alternating with the second team on a Saturday
afternoon) and trains once a week under lights on the first pitch. On Sunday mornings six of the seven age group squads play home matches (or train when no match is programmed) on the two pitches, and the u7s play on an area between the two pitches. It is a secured site with no informal use. The Estimated Use (MES of play) each week in the rugby season is: First Pitch: (1 team x 0.5 home games a week) + (2 full midweek training sessions) + (3 mini/midi teams x 0.5 home sessions a week x 0.5) = 3.25
Second Pitch: (1 team x 0.5 home games a week) + (1 vets teams x 0.25 home games a week) + (3 mini/midi teams x 0.5 home sessions a week x 0.5) = 1.50 Site Total: 4.75 Conclusion: site played over capacity (RED RAG rating). While there is some space capacity on the second pitch, the first pitch is overplayed due to training.
