2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE TOBACCO HEATING DEVICE

The THD is composed of two components:

The “Holder” which is a slim electrical heating unit that heats the tobacco into which the EHTP is inserted and that heats the tobacco material by means of an electronically controlled heater; and

The “Charger” which is a larger unit that is used to recharge the Holder after each Heatstick has been used.

The Holder stores energy for the use of one EHTP. The Charger battery can recharge the Holder approximately 20 times before requiring a connection to an electrical outlet.

Figure 1: The THS: composed of the Holder and the Charger.

2.1 The Holder

The Holder has the following components:

The heater;

The control and interface electronics, including the microprocessor and the haptic motor;

The battery;

The casing; and

The charging and communication contacts.

Figure 2: Cut-away view of the Holder.

The THD incorporates firmware control of the heater temperature to ensure consistent device performance. The heater maintains a pre-defined temperature profile (in the range of 320°C to 350°C) during the inhalation-experience. The firmware control of the heater ensures that the EHTP temperature is well below the threshold for combustion, which is more than 400°C degrees.

2.2 The Charger

The Charger comprises the following components:

Charging electronics;

Holder battery charging electronics and control electronics, including Bluetooth Low Energy chipset

Charger battery;

Cradle for Holder;

Casing, including containment mechanism for the holder during charging and cleaning; and

Software to register THD performance information (Communications).

Figure 3: Cut-away view of the Charger.

The Charger is also designed to house the Holder when it is not in use and when it is being cleaned.

3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

In order to operate the THS, an EHTP is inserted into the THD which has been removed from the Charger. A button on the THD starts the heating process which takes approximately 20 seconds. A white light indicates that the EHTP is ready to use. The user draws on the tip of the EHTP to activate a puff, similar to inhaling on the end of a cigarette stick. An aerosol is produced. When the user stops puffing, there is no aerosol generated from the tip of the EHTP or the end of the THD. The THD with the EHTP can be placed on a flat surface between puffs. There is no ash and no risk of burning combustible materials. After the first puff, the EHTP can be used for up to six more minutes or 14 puffs, which is similar to the time and/or puffs associated with a cigarettes. The THD automatically switches off after that. The EHTP is removed and should be disposed of in an appropriate place, but there is no risk of fire. The THD is placed back in the Charger for recharging.

Detailed instructions for use of the EHTP as part of the THS with the THD are provided in the “Safety Warnings and Instructions” manual in Annex 1.

4. MANUFACTURING AND QUALITY CONTROLS OF THE THD

The THS electronic devices (THD) are manufactured by a third-party supplier that specializes in electronic products. PMP S.A. maintains control over the design of the devices and oversight of the third-party manufacturing process, with a focus on manufacturing quality standards and controls. All electrical components comply with EU relevant legislations (Table 1), and have received applicable certifications for placement on the market,
