Apollo 17 Commemorative Statue
Summary - SrMgmtSeminar - Feb2018
• Purpose: Highlight the historic achievement and accomplishments of a New Mexico
native to inspire and encourage the next generation of space explorers, geologists,
engineers and scientists.
• Concept: Orbital ATK, Inc. commissions a statue of Astronaut Dr. Harrison “Jack”
Schmitt, a 30 year board member, NM native and ABQ resident, honoring his contribution
to the manned spaceflight program as a member of Apollo 17.
• Cost: Orbital ATK bears all costs to include transportation and installation.
• Art Type: Life size bronze statue on granite base by acclaimed sculpture Tom Bollinger
• Schedule: Design and first pass replica in process. Estimated completion June 2018.
• Location: Display in the Albuquerque Sunport maximizing
exposure to the public to inspire students, inform visitors and highlight
New Mexico achievements. Similar to the statue of Astronaut
Jack Swigert in the Denver Colorado International Airport (right).
