The m inimum partial pressure of carbon dioxide required to initi-
ate corrosion and the relative effect of increasing partial pres-
sures on th e corrosion rate are strongly influenced by other envi-
ronmental factors and production variables, such as:
a) temp eratu re;
b) H2S level;
c) PH;
d) chloride ion concentration;
e) sand production;
f)
water production and comp osition;
g) types and relative amo unts of produced hydrocarbons.
Finally, h e purchaser should consider future service of the w ell
when selecting a material class. This should no t be limited to
anticipated change s in the acid gas partial pressures for p roduc
tion or increased water production with or without increased
chloride content, but also should include consideration of opera
tions such a s acidification or other well treatments.

SR3 - m pac t Tests at Lo wer Temperature
The following targets have been suggested as being poss ible in
some cases, and more compatible with the usage of plate
specifications in offshore structures:
Class C 20 ft-lb. at
32°F
27J at 0°C
Class B 2 0 ft-lb. at -4°F 27J at -20°C
Class A 3 0 ft-lb. at -40°F
41i
at -40°F
Required for
Class AAZ
Users are cautioned that, for heavy section beam and c olumn
sections hav ing flange thickness greater than
1.5
inches,
meeting the foregoing oughness requirements may have
progressively more lim ited availability with the us ual produc tion
methods, and m ay require time consuming and costly extra
processing. For these applications , consid eration should be g iven
to fabricating m embers by welding together 50 ksi plates of
appropriate chemistry and Charpy toughness, in which case the
provisions of AWS D 1. l apply;
or
beams of a higher performance
class may be substituted.)
A2.4
SR4 - Ad ditio nal Tension Tests
Testing production lot rather tha n h eat lot, required for C lass AAZ.
A2.5
SR8 - Ultrasonic Examination
Recommended to avoid preexisting laminations in th e through
mem ber of truss connec tions or nodes; alternatively, thi s
inspection may be performed on a spot basis at th e fabrication
site, and the member reorientated to avoid laminations at
nodes.
A2.6
SR9 - Simulation of Therm al Treatment
Checks for loss of strength
or
toughness if the steel is to be
heated during fabrication above 1 050°F (565"C), beyond the
usual h eat affected zone from welding.

Additional Surface Requirements and Weld Repair
Surface defects marked by steelmaker and weld repaired by qual-
ified fabricator. Part o f Class AAZ.
A2.9
SR44 - Through Thlckness (2-Dlrection) Testing
Recommended to avoid laminar tearing in the through member
of truss connections or nodes. Passing he test may require
furthe r pro cess ing beyond 8.12: SR77, reduced sulfur. Appropriate
supplement for Class
A.
Required part of Class AAZ. If a re duction
of area greater than the standard 30% is required, this must be
stated, subject to agreement.
A2.10
SR75 - Maxlm um Yield and Yieldflensile Ratio

A l
General
This appendix provides guidelines for inquiry and p urchas e of API
Spec 6A equipment. These guidelines consist of data sheets t o
be completed by the purchaser, a series of typical wellhead and
tree configurations, and a decision tree and table for determining
specification levels.
The data sheets are designed to perform two functions:
a. Assist th e purchaser in deciding what he wants
b. Assist the purchaser in communicating the particular nee ds
and requirements, as well as information on the well
environment, to the manufacturer for the use i n designing
and producing equipment
To use this appendix, a copy of the data she ets should b e
com pleted as accurately as possible. The typical configurations
should be referred to, as needed, to select the require d
equipment. The decis ion tree Figure
A3,
and Table A 2 with its
instructions, provides the API recommended practice t o w hich
PSL each piece of equipment should be manufactured. A copy of
the data sheet should then be attached to the purchase order or
reques t for proposal.
A2
Data Sheets
The following pages contain questions and information that can
be used to select wellhead equipment. E xhibit A I ontains
general informa tion which pe rtains to the entire well. Exh ibits A2
through A 8 are designed to be used for each type of equipm ent.
A 3
Chokes
Orders for chokes shall specify the size and pressure rating of th e
inlet connection as well as size, type and pressure rating of the
outlet connection, first listing the inlet connection and then the
outlet connection, the working pressure, and type, (¡.e.,
adjustable or pos itive). Orders for adjus table chokes shou ld
specify the maximum orifice diameter. Orders for pos itive chokes
should specify the type of flow bean together with its maximum
orifice size.
A4
Typical Wellhead and Tree Configurations
Examples of typical wellhead and tree configurations are shown
on Figures A I and A2. Also included are examples o f casing and
bit programs that would be consistent with the wellheads as
shown.
A5
Product Specification Level
A5.1
Spec ification levels are defined in 1.3.Table A2 and Figure A 3
show th e recommended specification level for p rimary parts. This
table an d figure both give the same answer and either can be
used. Primary parts of a wellhead assembly include as a
minimum:
Tubing head
Tubing hanger
Tubing head adapter
Lower mas ter valve
All other w ellhead parts a re classified as secondary. The
specification level for secondary parts m ay be the s ame as or
less than th e level for primary parts.
The following definitions apply to th e basic questions asked in
Table A 2 and Figure A3.
A5.1.1
NACE?
This applies to the partial pressu re of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in
the produced fluid as de fined by NACE Std. MR 0175.
A5.1.2
High H2S Concentrat ion?
Use “Yes” if the 100 PPM radius of exposure (ROE) of H 2S is
greater than 50 ft (15 m) from the wellhead. ROE is defined in
Section 6 of this appendix.
A5.1.3
Close Proximity?
This proximity assessment should consider the potential impact
of an uncontrolled condition on life and environment near the
wellhead. The following list of items can be use d for determ ining
potential risk. Items for additional consideration should be
included w hen necessary.
a.
100
PPM radius of exposure (ROE) of H2S is g reater than
50 ft
(15 m) from the wellhead and includes any part of a
public area except a pub lic road. ROE is defined in Section
6
of th is appendix.
Public area shall mean a dwelling, place of business, church,
school, hospital, schoo l bus stop, governm ent building, a pub lic
road, all or any portion of a park, city, town, village, or other

The following inform ation is taken from Texas Railroad
Commission Rule 36. SI metric equ ivalent rules may be used if
available. Other meth ods of calculating ROE may apply
depending on local regulations.
A6.1 .1
For determining the location of the 100 ppm radius of exposure:

a. For the new wells in developed areas, the escape rate
shall be determined by using the current adjusted open-flow
rate of offs et wells, or the field average current adjusted
open-flow rate, w hichever is larger.
b. The escape rate used in determining the radius of exposure
shall be corrected to standard conditions of 14.65 psia and
60°F (16°C).
A6.1.4
When a w ell is in an area where insufficient data exists to calcu-
late a radiu s of exposure, but where hydrogen sulfide m ay be
expected, a 100 ppm radius of exposure equal to
3000
feet shall
be assumed.
A 7
Corrosivity
of
Retained Fluid
To select the desired m aterials class in Table 4.3, the purchaser
may determine the corrosivity of the retained fluid by considering
the various environmental factors and production variables listed
in
Exhibit A l . Corrosion, stresscorrosion cracking, eros ionc orre
sion, and sulfide stres s crack ing are all influenced by the
interaction of th e environmental factors and the production
variables. Other factors and variables not listed in Ex hibit
A l
may
also influence fluid corrosivity.
The purcha ser shall determine if materials mu st meet NACE
Standard MR0175 for sour service. NACE Standard MR0175 is
only concerned with t he metallic material requirements to
prevent sulfide stress cracking and not with resistance o
corrosion. A second consideration should be to determine th e
carbon diox ide partial p ressure, which generally relates to
corrosiv ity in wells as shown i n Table A l .
No
single retained fluid may be able to predict the field
performance of any single type of metallic or nonmetallic
material.
The minimum partial pressure of carbon dioxide required to
initiate corros ion and the relative effect of increa sing partial
pressures on the corrosion rate is strongly influenced by the
other environmental factors and production variables listed in
Appendix A , Exhibit A l .
Finally, the pu rchaser should consider the future service of the
well when choosing a materials class. This not only include s
anticipated changes in carbon dioxide partial pressures or
production but also should include consideration of workover
operations such as acidizing.
The purchaser may consider chem ical inhibition to reduce
corrosivity. Effective chem ical inhibition chang es the
relationship between the partial pressure of CO2 and the relative
corrosivity of the retained fluids in the above table.
The purchaser may also consider us ing metallic overlays or
plastic/orga nic co atings to reduce corrosion of low alloy
equipment. Some coatings have maximum service temperature
limitations less than th e temperature ratings selected from
Table 4.2 for the equipment.

Annex A (Informative)
Purchasing Guidelines
A l
General
This annex provides guidelines to assist the purchaser with valve
type selection and specification of specific requirements when
orde ring valves.
A2
Field Testing
Pressures during the te sting of installed valves sho uld no t exceed
the pressure rating of the valve by more than 50%when testing
with the valve partially open or by more than 10% f the pressure
rating when testing ag ainst a closed valve.
Note:
The maximum test pressure
for
valves fitted with an
external pressure relief m ay be lower (see
6.8).
A 3
Pressure Relief
Certain valve designs will trap pressure in the valve body cavity
when the valve is
in
the fully open and/or closed position. High
internal pressures can result from th e thermal expansion of the
fluid trapped in these co nfined areas. Therefore, if th e valve has
no self-relieving design provision, pressure relief fittings shall be
fitted in the valve body in accordance with
6.8
of this
international Standard.
A4
Pigging
The purchaser should examine the valve design for com patibility
with p igging operations w hen ordering valves for use in pipelines
requ iring pigging.
Venturi or reduced-bore valves m ay not be suitable for pigging
operations.
A valve in which the drive member or the obturator obstructs the
bore
in
the o therwise fully op en pos ition (e.g., a dua l-plate check
valve) is not piggable.
Certain full-opening valves with pocke ts may allow bypass of fluid
around a short pig or sphere.
AS
Fire Testing
The fire resistance design of valves shall be qualified by fire
tesing in accordance with IS0 10497. Fire resistance designs
already qualified to BS 6755 Part 2, API Spec 6FA, API Spec 6FC,
API Spec 6FD or API Std 607, third edition, are also acceptable.
A 6
Additional Testing
The purchaser shall specify any additional test requirements not
covered by this International Standard.
A7
Valve Data Sheet
The valve data sheet in this annex may b e used to assist with the
specification of valves for ordering.

purchaser for th e following valve operations:
a. Open to closed with the bore pressurized and the cav ity at
atmospheric pressure
b. Closed to open with both sides of the obturator pressurized
and the cavity at atmospheric pressure
c. Closed to open with one side of the obturator pressurized and
the cavity at atmos pheric pressure
d. As in c. but with the other side of the obturator pressurized
Torque or thrust values shall be m easured with s eats free of
sealant except where the sealant is the primary means of
sealing. If necessary for assembly, a lubrican t with a viscosity not
exceeding hat of SAE 1OW motor oil or equ ivalent may be used.
Thrust and torque testing shall be pe rformed following hydrostatic
shell testing and, if specified, low-pressure gas seat testing.
The measured torque or thrust results shall be compa red with
the manufacturer's predicted values.
c7
Cavity Relief Testing
C7.1
Frequency
Each valve shall b e tested.
Cavity relief testing is not required if protection of th e cavity
against over-pressure is ensured, for b oth the open an d the
closed position, by a hole in the obturator or around the seat seal.
C7.2
Trunnion-Mounted Bali Valves and Through-Conduit Gate
Valves with Internai-RelievingSeats
The procedure for cavity relief testing of trun nion-mo unted ball
valves and throughconduit gate valves with internal relieving
seats shall be:
a. Fill the valve in the half-open position with water
b. Close the valve and allow water to overflow from the test
connection at each end of the valve
c. Apply pressure o th e valve cavity until one seat relieves the
cavity pressure into the valve end and record this relief
pressure
d. for valve types with second-seat relief, continue to increase
the pressure to the cavity until the second seat relieves and
record the relief pressure of the second seat
Failure to relieve shall be cau se for rejection.
c7.3
Floatlng -Bali Valves
The procedure or ca vity relief testing of floating-ball valves shall be:
a. With the valve half-open, pressurize the valve to 1.33 t imes
the valve pressure rating specified in

consist of data sheets to be completed by the purchaser.
4.1.1
Data Sheet
The data sheet is designed to p erform two func tions:
a. Assist the purc haser in the p rocurem ent of the proper pipe or
component
b. Assist the purch aser in communica ting the particular needs
and requirements, as well as information on the environment,
to the manufacturer for the use in designing and producing
pipe or component
4.1.2
Use
A copy of the data sheet should be completed as accurately as
possible.A copy of the data sheet should then be attached to the
purchase order
or
request for proposal.
Appendix H provides a format t o docum ent service conditions and
requirements for ordering high pressure fiberglass components.
4.2
Pressure Ratings
It is recommended that the pipe be purchased by pressure
rating. The API Stan dard Pressure Ratings are from 500 Ibf./in.2
gauge through 5,000 Ibf./in.2 gauge in 250 Ibf./in.2 gauge
increments. The user should purchase pipe suitable for the
specific service conditions.
4.3
Components
Components, other than pipe, should be ordered on the ba sis of
thread size and pressure rating.
