Stella Cairns on painting• Before my stroke I used to paint

for pleasure - with my right hand

• Stroke 19 years ago

• Around 10 years ago - started to

paint again - with my left hand

• Joined an art class

• I paint from my imagination. I get a picture in my

head – a beautiful hillside or a tranquil sea.

Page 9: Aphasia and the Arts - Stroke Association

Stella on painting (2)• When I paint I feel relaxed, happy, tranquil, not

a care in the world

• I get lost in it – could be painting for 1, 2 hours…

• I like to paint nature, people, uplifting things

• All the colours are my favourite but I like a bit of

purple.

Stella on painting (3)• When the painting is finished I feel elated

Sometimes I have got to get it right!

• Paint for good reasons - not sad

• They will all be spectacular in their own way

• Do it for you – nobody tells me to do it - I do it

for myself.
