NEWImproving patient outcomes with motivational interviewing

Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals: A Sensible ApproachBruce A. Berger and William A. Villaume

Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals: A Sensible Approach presents a new way of teaching the theory and practice of motivational interviewing (MI) to health care professionals (HCPs). MI has been shown to improve treatment adherence and outcomes, promote health behavior change, improve patient satisfaction with care, and increase retention rates in complex case management. This book describes how everyday persuasive language and strategies can trigger resistance in patients and explains how this opposition can be overcome through building rapport with the patient and listening to the patient’s reasoning and concerns.

Key Features• A practical, step-by-step approach to the use of MI skills and tools in all practice settings.• Multiple dialogues between HCPs and patients to illustrate the use of MI skills and tools.• Case studies including extensive dialogues with video links, plus analysis of the cases, to

demonstrate the application of MI.

Develop the communication skills needed to provide high-quality care

Communication Skills for Pharmacists: Building Relationships, Improving Patient CareBruce A. Berger

The book’s 15 chapters cover key communication skills, such as listening and empathic responding, supportive communication, persuasive communication, assertiveness, and conflict management; provide help for patients in accepting the behavior changes needed to manage their illness; and explore ways to become culturally competent to provide quality care for all patients.

Key Features• A new chapter tells how to discuss sensitive topics that patients may find difficult to speak

with pharmacists about because of embarrassment, cultural beliefs, or fear of social stigma.• Another new chapter describes the way limited literacy, or even limited health literacy,

can affect patient outcomes and how pharmacists can identify and help overcome such limitations in dealing with their patients.

• The expanded chapter on managing change emphasizes the use of motivational interviewing.• Dozens of examples share good and bad pharmacist–patient and pharmacist–physician

dialogues.• Guidelines tell how to contact a physician and then build rapport and discuss drug-related

problems with him or her.• Questions for reflection appear at the end of each chapter.

Table of Contents• Caring, Covenants, Codes, and Commitment• Developing the Relationship• Choosing to See Patients as People• Listening and Empathic Responding• Patient Counseling• Managing the Angry Patient• Assertiveness• Conflict Management• Helping Patients with Change• Interacting with Physicians• Supportive Communication• Choosing an Appropriate Response• Persuasive Communication• Immediacy: How Word Choice and Nonverbal Cues Affect the Relationship• Cultural Competence• Communicating on Sensitive Issues• Communicating with Patients Who Have Literacy Limitations

Patients deserve to receive quality compounded preparations.’ I couldn’t agree more, and such a complete reference on ophthalmics is long overdue. I donated my copy to the hospital pharmacist at our institution, and strongly feel that any pharmacy that prepares ophthalmics should have this book.

This book is also a satisfactory representation of a U.S. college or school of pharmacy’s curriculum. It can clearly be an aid to anyone preparing for the FPGEE. However, because of its comprehensive nature and the inclusion of convenient, concise appendices, it also may be valuable to those preparing for the NAPLEX, or serve as a reference tool for practicing pharmacists. The text’s in-depth social, behavioral, and administrative pharmacy sciences section may prove to be exceptionally helpful to those preparing for the FPGEE as it is thorough and comprehensive coverage of what is typically the most difficult for graduates of foreign pharmacy schools to master.
