September 15, 2013 2 Timothy 2:3-4 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. For some reason, the army and soldiers are on my mind these days. (For those of you who don’t know, my 21 year old son, Jared, is currently in basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia.) I have received many letters from Jared since he arrived at Basic. I also have received 2 phone calls since he left 11 weeks ago. What has been very clear in these conversations is that Jared is committed and submitted to be a soldier. During this time of training, these soldiers are tested, prodded, marched, trained, yelled at, deprived, marched, prepared, awarded, punished, and marched some more. They run, fight, shoot, stand guard, learn facts, compete, sleep outside, sleep on the ground, sleep in tents, sometimes not allowed to sleep, strive physically, and earn privileges by doing well. All of this in order to prepare to be the best soldier they can be. It gives me a little insight to the scripture from a practical standpoint. As we prepare for being the “good soldier of Jesus Christ,” why is it we expect everything to be simple? Why is it that we have an idea that everything must go perfectly and easily in order for us to think things are going right in our walk with God? A true soldier of the US Army is not given a perfect situation or an easy life when he is training or even serving. He or she is given challenges to overcome and skills to learn in order to cope with war and to help those he or she serves with cope as well. Next time a trial comes along—know God is preparing you to be a better soldier. He is preparing you to have a skill that may save your spiritual life or the spiritual life of a fellow-soldier. Know that in order to achieve victory; one must have the battle skills needed to fight well. That means testing, training, and trials. As the scripture says . . . we do this to “please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” March on!! APC Electives ~ Wed.
