System of citation most oftenused by the social sciences
As writers, we have the responsibility toacknowledge the works of others when we
use their works to improve ours. As studentsin English 120, we utilize APA Style andFormatting in the construction of ourdocuments and in the citation of our sources.

Writing Style that is often in the Humanities such as
English Departments, APA (American PsychologicalAssociation) Writing Style is primarily the writing styleutilized within the Social Sciences and a series ofother fields. APA is also used in series of academic
journals. Writing style refers not to the way you write, but some of the rules and standards of the writingitself, such as expectations regarding the thesisstatement, citations, and the integration of quotedmaterial.

Third vs. First Person Point of View: You can only use first personwhen you discuss something that you specifically did. It’s odd torefer to yourself in third person. I narrowed down the scope of theresearch to the last 10 years.
Please note that this does not mean that every other sentence shouldsay I think, I feel, ect.
In every other circumstance make sure to use third person.
Use active voice: Using active voice is when you allow the subjectto complete the action: “Steve takes out the trash” Or “I heard
there will be layoffs”: Here, Steve and “I” are the subjectsundertaking an action. Passive voice is when the action is placed in the subject position. So
for our examples above: “The trash is taken out by taken out by Steve”or “Layoff have been heard off by me.” That just sounds strange, right?

Be concise and precise: avoid any vagueness and beincredibly specific about everything. Avoid wordinessand condense information when possible.
When referring to correlational research in the socialsciences, we do not proof. We suggest or indicate. Avoiding Poetic Language. Therefore, you should
avoid figurative language, such as metaphors, analogies, rhyme schemes, alliteration. Instead, “usesimple, descriptive adjectives and plain language thatdoes not risk confusing your meaning.”

While you should always be clear about the sex identity ofyour participants (if you conducted an experiment), sothat gender differences are obvious, you should not usegender terms when they aren't necessary.
In other words, you should not use "he," "his" or "men" asgeneric terms applying to both sexes.
APA does not recommend replacing "he" with "he or she,""she or he," "he/she," "(s)he," "s/he," or alternatingbetween "he" and "she" because these substitutions are
awkward and can distract the reader from the point youare trying to make. The pronouns "he" or "she" inevitably cause the reader to
think of only that gender, which may not be what youintend.

To avoid unintentional biases in your language, lookto the parameters of your research itself.
When writing up an experimental report, describeyour participants by the measures you used to classifythem in the experiment, as long as the labels are notoffensive.
Example: If you had people take a test measuringtheir reaction times and you were interested inlooking at the differences between people who hadfast reaction times and those with slow reactiontimes, you could call the first group the "fast reactiontime group" and the second the "slow reaction timegroup.“

Larger/Block Quotes of More Thorough Information (40 or morewords in APA):The test of memory consisted of “one cued-recall question abouteach critical detail” (Weingardt, 1997, p. 74). After this test they
were given warning instructions that stated:For some of the questions, the detail in question wasnot mentioned in the story at all (that is, you saw thecorrect answer in the slide show, but the detail inquestion was not mentioned in the story). For otherquestions, the detail was mentioned, but it was
described inaccurately (that is, you saw the correctanswer in the slide show, but an incorrectanswer was mentioned in the story). (Weingardt,1997, p. 74)
Weingardt found that participants remembered the suggesteddetails without being able to distinguish its source.
