Music in Worship: Epiphany Sunday, January 5, 2020

Introit: The Birdstraditional Czech carolFrom out of a wood did a cuckoo fl y, Cuckoo,He came to a manger with joyful cry, Cuckoo; He hopped, he curtsied, round he fl ew,And loud his jubilation grew,Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.

A pigeon fl ew over to Galilee, Vrercroo,He strutted, and cooed, and was full of glee, Vrercroo,And showed with jewelled wings unfurled,His joy that Christ was in the world,Vrercroo, vrercroo, vrercroo.

A dove settled down upon Nazareth,Tsucroo,And tenderly chanted with all his breath, Tsucroo:‘O you,’ he cooed, ‘so good and true,My beauty do I give to youTsucroo, Tsucroo, Tsucroo.’

-translated Percy Dearmer (1867-1936)

Anthem: Here is the little doorHerbert Howells (1892-1983)

Here is the little door, lift up the latch, oh lift!We need not wander more, but enter with our gift; Our gift of fi nest gold.Gold that was never bought or sold;Myrrh to be strewn about his bed;Incense in clouds about His head; All for the child that stirs not in His sleep,But holy slumber hold with ass and sheep.

Bend low about His bed,For each He has a gift;See how His eyes awake,Lift up your hands, O lift! For gold, He gives a keen-edged sword.(Defend with it thy little Lord!)For incense, smoke of battle red,Myrrh for the honored happy dead;Gifts for His children, terrible and sweet;Touched by such tiny hands, and Oh such tiny feet.

-Frances Chesterton (1869-1938)

Music notes will return January 12. The Choir has a day of much-needed rest this morning, and will return at full strength next week Sunday.

And I Kept on Living: a Candlelight Vigil for Suicide Prevention Awareness. Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. Admission: Free; A&P Chamber Choir; Jean-Sébastien Vallée, direction.

Join us for a special Candlelight Vigil contemplating the subject of suicide and the stigma associated with mental illness. Among young Canadians, suicide is the second-leading cause of death after car accidents. Suicide and mental health are closely connected: an estimated 90% of people who die by suicide also struggle-with mental illness. Suicide aff ects most of us, but we don’t know how to talk about it--so we don’t. Join us as we let music open our hearts and minds to create a safe space of refl ection on this diffi cult topic.

Please join us on Sunday, January 19, 2020, as we celebrate and give thanks for the wonderful work that our Charitable Partners do in

our community.

Following Worship there will be an opportunity for you to meet some of our agencies and get to know them better and to perhaps fi nd an

outlet for your talents!

We look forward to having you join us.

When Necessary Use Words - Evangelism and Mission Today

Do you struggle with how to speak and share your faith in Jesus Christ? Many of us do in our increasingly pluralistic and secular Canadian context. Just as the disciples had to ask Jesus how to pray, we also need help in fi guring out ways on how to engage in our Christian practice of evangelism that is both eff ective and sensitive to our current context. Please join us on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Kildonan Hall when Dr. Ross Lockhart from St. Andrew’s Hall Vancouver will lead us in a fascinating interactive workshop on how to share our faith in our church and community today. Please contact the church offi ce or send an email to [email protected] to confi rm your attendance.
