W hat do you usually do after Sunday worship? Lunch with friends and family? Watch sports? We’ve all got our Sunday routine. My Sunday pattern is Sunday school, worship, lunch… nap! Sunday is my favorite day of the week because we get to gather for worship, enjoy the church family and leave with a sense of joy and refreshment. I look forward to Sunday. Worship helps me refocus on my relationship with God and get ready for the challenges of the week. Like so many other believers, if I miss worship I feel empty and spiritually hungry. But worship is not just about what we receive. True worship should also create a strong desire to help and serve others. When we worship Jesus, we should be prompted to acknowledge the needs of others over our own. The desire to serve others should be a natural transition from worship. Because we love God, we must also love those who He cares for. The best way to express God’s love is to act as servants. Over and again we read in the gospels how worship leads to service: Matthew 8:1-2. After Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount, He immediately came down and healed a leper. Jesus showed us that the best way to follow a good sermon is by demonstrating the healing power of God. Matthew 17:14-20. When the disciples were shown a glimpse of the glory of God as Jesus transfigured before them, they wanted to stay on the mountain and worship Him. But, He insisted on going back down the mountain. When they reached the bottom, Jesus continued His healing ministry. Again, worship followed by service. Matthew 14:13-21. Jesus preached all morning to thousands of people in the desert. As lunchtime approached, people started getting antsy and ready to eat (that tends to happen!). The disciples wanted to send the crowds away, but Jesus said, “you feed them;” a commis- sion for His disciples to serve those who were hungry. Our Savior proceeded to take a very small portion of fish and bread and feed the masses. continued...

lunch… nap!

Over and again we read in the gospels how worship leads to service:

Matthew 8:1-2.

The disciples wanted to send the crowds away, but Jesus said, “you feed them;” a commis-sion for His disciples to serve those who were hungry. Our Savior proceeded to take a very small portion of fish and bread and feed the masses.

John 13:1-16. In my favorite example, the disciples shared an intimate moment of worship at the Passover celebration. The entire meal was a foreshadowing of His death and the ultimate redemp-tive victory of God. Jesus had worship with His disciples, sharing the bread and wine and singing songs together. These were intense and intimate moments of worship, but even this moment of closeness with Jesus was not complete. He said He was going to show them “the greatest way.” He proceeded to bow down in humility and serve His disciples by washing their feet. “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14) The master must become the servant. One of the most intimate engagements in worship in all of scripture and it is naturally followed by service.

T he question for us becomes, what does our worship lead us to DO? Does our worship of Jesus transition us to a lifestyle of serving

others? It should. It’s OK to go home and take a Sunday nap(!) and enjoy the Sabbath rest. But, our Sunday worship should naturally transition into a daily concern for the needs of others and a deep desire to serve in the name of Jesus. Do we worship only because it feels good and we get something out of it? Do we worship out of habit or routine? Have you been in worship for years without ever sensing the needs of others? It may be time to re-evaluate your relationship with Jesus. Every close relationship we have in life changes our behavior. If we are close to Jesus, then our attitude and activities must change to reflect Him. This month (Sept. 13 thru Oct. 4), I am challenging the membership at Poplar Ridge Friends to put our love for Jesus into action. We are going to have a community service initiative called, “Love In[Deed]” and our goal is 500 hours of service to our community in Jesus’ name. The goal is to share the love of God with others through acts of service. The church staff has put together several projects that you can join or you can choose a service activity on your own. Whatever you choose, do it to the best of your ability and in Jesus’ name! My hope is that these service projects will show the world how much we love Jesus and reveal His love through us. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven…” (Matthew 5:16). I hope the community sees that Poplar Ridge is not just a house of worship, but we are also a Living Body that reflects the great love of Jesus Christ. I want the world to see how our worship of Jesus leads us to serve in His name.

In His Name,

Pastor Dave Mercadante

Friends, This is an exciting time as we approach Upward Basketball season again! Several members of our meeting have already been busy at work planning for another successful season. Our prayer is that God will pour out His blessings on the athletes, coaches, and helpers throughout this season in a special way. At this time, we would like to request that you all would be in prayer regularly that God would be ever present in the Upward ministry not just during the season but throughout the year. We would also ask that you be in prayer of how you could best be the hands and feet of Christ in participat-ing in the Upward Basketball ministry! There

are many opportunities for everyone to serve as coaches both for basket- ball and cheerleading, scorekeeping, working in concessions, leading devotions, and greeting players, families and guests just to name a few. Our prayer is that if God is leading you to step out and “Go” that you would prayerfully consider the Upward ministry and seek out John Partin or Jon Lowe to continue or begin your involvement. There could not possibly be a more important ministry than planting the seed of Christ in the hearts of a new generation.

In service together for Him,

Jon Lowe (209-5511 / [email protected]) John Partin (847-1226 / [email protected])
