Ask Zeke April 2017 – Harps
Living Water’s plucky 24/7 office fish says hurray for the harps
Q. When I was up in Psalms for Adult Forum last month, I saw a harp
next to the piano. Where did it come from? A. The harp in the
Psalms room, where our divine choir practices, belongs to Kathy
Exelby,Living Water’s newly arrived volunteer harpist. Ditto for
the one in the sanctuary. Thanks to Kathy and a spell of fishin’ on
the Internet, my harp IQ has climbed a couple octaves. Did you know
that 66 Bible verses mention harps? That harpists don’t use their
baby finger to pluck strings? The harp is the oldest known stringed
instrument. It dates back more than 4,500 years to ancient Egypt.
The earliest harps were fashioned from hunting bows. Today’s harp
bears a strong similarity to its cousin the piano. Harp strings
correspond to white piano keys, and pedals serve as this
instrument’s sharps and flats. Kathy’s harps have 47 strings –
divided into 7 octaves, each ranging from C to B – and 7 pedals. If
you get up-close-and-personal with the harps (it’s OK to touch
them) you’ll notice the strings are different colors: C is red, F
is purple, and the others are white. Lower-octave strings are made
of brass, and the ones for middle octaves and higher are gut. When
plucked, the strings vibrate and move air through space. The
soundboard they’re attached to at an angle also vibrates and moves
air. Audible sound waves are produced. Our seasoned harpist, who’s
semi-retired, has been plucking joyfully for about five decades.
She looks forward to “giving back with joy” at Living Water. Along
with playing at our 8:30 worship service, she’s available for
weddings and memorial services (contact the church office to make
arrangements). I’m thrilled to the gills to welcome our resident
harpist and her heavenly harps. It’d be utterly swell to hear the
dulcet tones of Handel’s Water Music being played on the harp. What
more could a lowly water-dwelling columnist ask? Do you have a
question for Zeke? E-mail it to him at [email protected] or contact
his writing partner, Jill Wehr, at 480-515-4813.

A Message from Pastor ShariGreengs from my new office!
As I look around this new space surrounded by familiar books,
pictures, and knickknacks filled with memories, it occurs to me
that there is one thing that always gets a prominent place wherever
I have worked or lived for over 20 years. I purchased it back in
high school, and it has travelled from Brooklyn Park, MN to
Flagstaff, AZ to Miami, FL to Berkeley, CA, and then to Phoenix,
AZ. It is a simple black picture frame with a photo of a rowing
team and below it reads:
TEAMWORK The ability to work together toward a common
vision.
The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward
organizaonal objecves. It is the fuel that allows common people
to aain uncommon results.
I love this so much because it resonates with who I am and what
I am all about. When I recall precious memories from my life and
ministry, they all seem to be the result of great teamwork. In
those moments, I learned first-hand that when the gis of everyone
are ulized and celebrated, God can do amazing things. St. Paul
writes about this in his leer to the Ephesians: “…the whole body,
joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and
builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Ephesians
4: 16). And, in St. Paul’s leer to the Colossians, he reminds us
that there is an important component that must be included in the
team: Christ. “He is the head of the body, the church; he is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to
have first place in everything” (Colossians 1: 18) As I begin my
ministry here at Living Water, I want to thank you for welcoming me
to the team! My family and I have felt warmly welcomed here, and we
are excited to worship, fellowship, learn and serve alongside you.
I am also looking forward to helping build up the children, youth
and family ministries here at Living Water. But, there is something
I must do before I begin working on that. In the next couple of
months, I plan to observe and listen and learn more from you about
what Living Water is all about, what teams are already working on,
who you are as a child of God (and your faith story), and why you
have chosen to be a part of this community of faith (or, maybe, how
God chose you!). I realize this will take quite some me, but it’s
worth every minute, for we are all important players on the team.
So, if you would like, feel free to call me in the office or email
me, and we can set up a me that works for both of us to talk and
learn from each other. I’m looking forward to our conversaons!
God’s peace, Pastor Shari

Pastor Shari Bernau arrives at Living Water Lutheran
Church in mid-March to serve as the new Associate
Pastor with a focus in Children, Youth and Family
Ministries. She was previously at All Saints Lutheran
Church in Phoenix, AZ, where she served the past 12
years (2005 to February 2017) as the Associate
Pastor of Children, Youth and Family Ministries.
Pastor Shari was born and grew up in a NW suburb
of Minneapolis, MN, called Brooklyn Park. Her
fondest memories are from the summers spent in her
family’s Birchwood, WI, lake home.
She earned bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and
International Affairs from Northern Arizona University
in Flagstaff in 1998 and her Master of Divinity at
Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary at Berkeley,
CA, in 2004. She was ordained as a minister of the ELCA, the
largest Lutheran
denomination in the United States, on February 5, 2005.
Youth and Family Ministry is Pastor Shari’s passion. She has
shared the love of Christ
with the kids of All Saints through leading the confirmation
program; directing
approximately 20 milestone recognitions, classes and events each
year; and managing
numerous youth events, fundraisers, camps/retreats and mission
trips. Pastor Shari
says, “Kids bring out the very best in me, and when I am working
with children and
youth, I feel as though I am truly using the gifts God has given
me.” Within the Grand
Canyon Synod of the ELCA, Pastor Shari serves on the staff for
Lutheran
Campfirmation (a one-week camp for junior high students in
Payson), is a member of
the Leadership Team for this summer’s Synod Partners Service and
Learning Trip for
high school youth, and was selected to be the Synod Coordinator
for the 2018 ELCA
National Youth Gathering.
Even though her focus is on Children, Youth and Family
Ministries, Pastor Shari has a
great deal of experience in the area of worship leadership,
preaching, visitation, and
officiating memorial services and weddings. Serving in a large
congregation during
times of transition has provided many opportunities for her to
learn and grow into a
diversely qualified pastor.
Pastor Shari is married to James, owner-operator of PlayGrounds
Fun Zone & Café.
They are the parents of Anna (almost 11) and Miriam (age 8).
Pastor Shari loves to
travel with her husband, and their favorite destination is
Mexico. In her spare time, she
enjoys baking, hosting parties and guests in her home, walking
and hiking, going out to
eat and driving her daughters to swim, volleyball and choir
practices.

The council met on February 27th, with an introduction of the
new council members. We were excited to welcome Pastor Shari Bernau
between services on March 19th, with her installation at 4:00 pm
the same day. The Congregational Council reviewed the Finance Team
recommenda-tion to approve an annual maintenance contract of the
HVAC system in the church buildings, as our systems are getting old
and have not been serviced on a regular basis. The council also
discussed costs of changing the lights from halogen bulbs to LED,
which will decrease the elec-trical cost as well as the heat output
from the light fixtures.

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT FORUM SUNDAY MORNINGS AT 9: 40 AM IN
PSALMS
The Sunday morning Adult Forum continues at 9: 40 AM in the
Psalms Room on the second floor of the Education Building. We will
not be meeting on Easter Sunday because of the brunch between
services, but our schedule for the other Sundays is as follows.
On April 2, 9, and 23 Dennis Nelson will continue his five-week
study on the Gospel of John, using a video-based series featuring
Adam Hamilton. On April 2 we will focus on the story of the
resurrection of Lazarus. On April 9 (Palm Sunday) we will look at
John’s account of the last supper, including his description of
what Jesus did, said, and prayed on the night of His betrayal. On
April 23 (the Sunday after Easter) we will celebrate God’s gift of
eternal life as we read of the resurrection of Jesus and His
appearing to His disciples after His resurrection.
On April 30 Deb Bash, member of Living Water, will tell about
her ten-day trip in May 2016 bicycling through Israel with eleven
other cyclists. The Adult Forum will then meet for three more
Sundays, through and including May 21, before we take a break for
the summer.
10 AM & 6:30 PM IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL
2017 Vacation Bible SchoolMark your calendars now for our 2017
edition of Vacation Bible School on June 19-23! Our theme this year
is “ROME – Paul and the Underground Church.” Your children,
grandchildren, neighbors and friends will elbow through a crowded
Roman marketplace, visit with the Apostle Paul and gasp as a thief
is wrestled to the ground. They’ll tiptoe past Roman guards as they
inch their way to a hidden cave – where first-century Christians
eagerly await their arrival. And that’s just one day at this
summer’s most exciting VBS!
Registration is available at lwlcaz.org for all children ages 3
through 6th grade. We will also need lots of youth and adult
volunteers to bring this adventure to life. Please contact Kris
Crow ([email protected]) or Janice Moore at ([email protected])
if you are interested in sharing your time and talents with our
amazing children!
Starting on Tuesday, April 4, we begin a 6-session video study
on “Becom-ing More Than a Good Bible Study Girl.” This study,
written by Lysa TerKeurst, will challenge us to see what kind of
difference Jesus can make in our lives. We’ll explore questions
such as “Will Jesus make a difference in my heart? Will He help my
connection with God be more real? Does Jesus really have a calling
for my life?” Join us at 10 am or 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.
Participant books are available from Myrna. You can also download
the participant book from Kindle, and it’s also available in an
audio version. The coffee (and hot water for tea/hot chocolate) is
always on. We welcome all women to join us. Questions? Contact
Myrna at [email protected]

On April 2, we will bless more than 40 quilts that were
completed during the last 12 months. Then, on April 22, they will
join other quilts and kits at a pick up site at Shepherd of the
Valley Lutheran in Phoenix, headed to a Lutheran World Relief
warehouse, where they will be repackaged and sent overseas to
distribution sites in one of probably 15 countries where they are
needed. Recipients of the quilts we make use their quilts to shield
against the cold and rain, and for warm bedding. But their
versatility also makes quilts useful as simple tents, floor
coverings, or a wrap to hold a baby on a mother’s back.
It costs LWR $2.25 per quilt to ship the completed quilts
overseas. If you want to support this relief ministry, make a gift
to Living Water and note LWR Quilt and Kit Shipping in the memo
line of your check. Thank you!
The ministry of mission quilting for Lutheran World Relief will
continue during the summer hiatus in our own homes. In September,
we’ll regroup to again tie quilts that have been created and
assembled during the summer. The Piece Makers group thanks everyone
for their support and contributions of fabric and money to purchase
needed items. God continues to bless the work of our hands!
Questions? please ask Myrna Ulland. You can also find information
on LWR's quilt ministry at http://lwr.org/get-involved/quilts

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYLiving Water Lutheran Church, as part of the
Northeast Coalition of Lutheran Churches, broke ground last month
in Tempe for a new Habitat for Humanity house. The house is being
built for the Sherman family. Our one work date will be Saturday,
April 8 and we will need men and women willing to help with the
build. Signup sheets will be available in the narthex this month.
If you have questions, call or email John Goesling, (480) 778-9176
or [email protected] .
Thank you to everyone who contributed items for our LWR “Baskets
of Promise” Personal Care Kits during several weeks of this year’s
Lenten season. With the generous help from a Thrivent Action Team
grant ($250), we were able to com-plete many, many kits to bless
the recipients who will receive them. The kits will be blessed on
Sunday, April 2, and then sent off to the LWR ingathering at
Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran in Phoenix on April 22. Something
as simple as a bath towel, some soap, a toothbrush, a comb, and a
nail file can add dignity to the life of someone who perhaps has
lost everything due to a natural disaster or a refugee situation.
May God bless all of the kits that you so generous-ly
contributed.
