Agenda for Open House .......................................... 14
Membership in the Knights of Columbus brings you a wealth of resources to help you grow in
your faith and become a better Catholic man. In a world full of challenges, the Knights of
Columbus equips men to answer the call to lead with faith, protect their families, serve others,
and defend their values. If you truly want to become better than you are, encourage all eligible
Catholic men to become Knights of Columbus.
Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well being of every council.
Let’s follow the vision of Father Michael J. McGivney, reach out to your parish family and
friends, and invite them to join us.
Encourage all members to utilize membership webinars developed by Supreme. Topics include
effective council operation, membership recruitment, and charitable outreach programs that
engage council members and build stronger councils. These interactive webinars allow
participants to view, ask questions, and receive answers related to the topic being discussed.
Online Membership is another way to supplement traditional recruiting efforts by offering a
new, digital experience for those men who may not yet be ready for council based membership.
Our efforts must be focused on recruiting through Supreme and State programs. The new Faith
in Action program developed by Supreme extends a personal invitation to Knights of Columbus
members and their families to live out the calling of their faith and the call to service of their
neighbor. It seeks to balance all of our key priorities - Faith, Family, Community, and Life.
Through it, we’re encouraged to come together to share our faith, celebrate fraternity with our
families, and to serve our communities.
Armed with this wealth of resources provided by the Knights of Columbus, and our State
Membership and Program Directors, we’re confident that we, North Dakota Knights of
Columbus, can continue to develop and grow new and existing councils throughout our state.
Vivat Jesus!

Membership
Hello Brother Knights of North Dakota,
The Membership team is looking forward to helping you grow your Council in many different
ways this new Fraternal Year. If your Council grows the State grows!
The on-line membership program is a great opportunity for Catholic gentlemen to join the
Knights and a great growth opportunity for local councils. Check it out more at kofc.org. See
how it can work for your Council! Contact Supreme to get a Landing Page set up too!
There are Churches out there that are too small to have their own Council. We can help them
by setting up a roundtable! Very easy to do. Another way to build membership in your Council.
Are you in a parish that you would like to see a Council in? Your Council is in another town
but your own parish could support it’s own? Let’s work to get that Council started!
You could reach out to non-active members and see what the Knights could do for them to
become more involved. As we all have probably heard before, these folks say they were “never
asked.” Maybe they have some thoughts or ideas to move your Council forward. Be open
minded and try new things.
Work closely with your Insurance agent to achieve your Insurance goals. These agents can
really be a good recruiter for your Council. What awesome opportunity for everyone involved!
Through sharing with each other our “best practices,” holding our various council activities in
our churches and communities, and doing all these not only with our Brother Knights but with
our spouses and children, together we set a example that all men of our parishes will want to be
a part of.
Thank you in advance for working with your entire Membership team: Jacob Monson, Carson
Kouba, Pat Dolan, Dean Bittner, Brian Rodgers, Shawn Tennyson, George Lacher and myself
to grow the Knights of Columbus in the great State of North Dakota.
God Bless,
Membership Director

Qualifications for Membership
In the Knights of Columbus
The qualifications for membership in the Knights of Columbus are set down in Section 101 of the Laws of the Order. They are as follows:
“Only practical Catholics in union with the Holy See shall be eligible to and entitled to continue membership in the Order. An applicant for membership shall not be less than 18 years of age on his last birthday.” PRACTICAL CATHOLIC–Guidelines have been established to assist in judging the practical Catholicity of an applicant or member. Those guidelines also appear in our Grand Knight’s Handbook (#915). If questions arise at any time as to the candidate’s practical Catholicity, the Proposer or the Admissions Committee should consult the council chaplain and/or the candidate’s pastor. No council should be judging a candidate when it comes to qualifications of his catholicity That must be left up to the parish priest. NEW FORM 100

The prospect then has the option to join our order as an online member. Once they join as an online member, Supreme does a fabulous job of nurturing the individual with email and online content that highlights the great work we do. When they become an online member, you’ll also receive an email from me that they have been assigned to your council. It’s up to the individual councils to reach out to the online member and invite them to a meeting or event and make them feel welcome. Eventually, when they are ready, they will convert to a full-fledged Knight and member of your council through an exemplification. For more information, visit: http://nd-kofc.org/online_membership.html or give me a call.

“Father Wants You” MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
This campaign is a wonderful marketing tool for recruiting new members. For a successful membership drive, follow the campaign steps:
1. Get the Pastor’s approval for a “Father Wants You” drive in your parish Along with an approval letter from the pastor, you will need his picture.
2. Acquire a parish membership roster from the parish or use the last pictorial directory from your parish. 3. Build a team from the council members that are active in the council or VIP members. 4. Set a meeting with your team to cover the roster and highlight the Parishioners known to the team members that would make possible Knights of Columbus families. 5. Divide the master list into groups of (5 to 10), family names depending on the size of the parish, for team members to contact. Be sure the list has the following information: Name / phone / address / wife’s name. 6. Before contacts are made, ask the Parish Priest to okay it. Ask Father if he would like to add some names to the list. 7. Schedule an open house with the Pastor and include the wives, council officers and your Insurance Agent. 8. A personal invitation from the Pastor should be mailed to all prospective candidates. 9. One week following the mailing, be sure to do the personal contact. 10. The council should prepare a sample phone message so everyone giving the same invite information, including (time, place, and response).

Sample pulpit talk for recruitment Good evening Father, ladies, brother Knights and families.
My name is (Your name) from the Knights of Columbus:
Someone asked me after learning that I was a member of the Knights of Columbus. “What are the
Knights and tell me everything that they do?” The Knights of Columbus are unique in the Catholic
Church. We owe this to the founder of our Order and his inspired vision, the servant of God, Father
Michael J. McGivney. For many years we have identified ourselves as a Catholic family, fraternal,
service organization. We are each of those things independent of the other; for example, we are a
Catholic organization or a service organization. It is the combination of both of these that makes us
unique and gives us strength.
First of all, our devotion to our faith makes us unique. Our roots are in our Catholic parish. Our founder
was a priest. Our service programs are informed by our faith.
Our willingness to give of ourselves for the church and community, for families in need, for brother
knights and young people results annually in record amounts of charity and service.
To truly be a Knight is to live the virtues of Columbianism. That is also part of Father McGivney’s vision.
We are always striving to be better Catholic men, better husbands, fathers, and sons, better citizens,
better neighbors, better leaders…What is unique for us is the spiritual dimension; what the Second
Vatican Council referred to as “the universal call to holiness.” That is the spirit of the Order.
I come to you today to inform you of some of possibilities here at (Your Parish) but only with your help.
We need more families to join our family, the Knights of Columbus, to better serve the needs of the
priest and parish. Knights of Columbus in their local churches serve as; ushers, greeters, ministers,
cooks, janitors, baby sitters, painters, and last year the North Dakota Knights of Columbus donated in
excess of $50,000 to seminarians and religious for their studies, you name it the Knights are probably
doing it. You have an active Knights of Columbus council here in but we need you and your family.
We can offer you a fraternal group that works and plays together while promoting our Catholic faith. The
opportunity to help your pastor in caring for your church and community, to help our youth in programs
available such as essay contests, coloring contest, scholarships, sporting events, and programs for the
parish. Knights also support the RSVP vocations program, Pennies for Vocations, and Handicap
funding.
You might say we are we already doing most of the programs, yes hopefully you are. The Knights offer
leadership and organization to the pastor and church, along with other benefits.
The list of things we have to offer is endless and I know you would get tired of listening to me.
Please stop after Mass and visit with members of the Knights. Better yet, come and join us. We want
and need all of you.
The peace of Jesus Christ be with you and the blessings or Our Lady of Fatima grant you ever lasting
life.
Thank you for your time.

Membership Retention
Each council MUST appoint one of its members as Membership
Retention Chairman. THIS CANNOT BE THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY.
This member will work closely with the Grand Knight and Financial
Secretary each month to monitor the status of the current membership.
The State Membership Retention Chairmen’s most important duty
is to make a personal contact with the member. A telephone call
followed by a visit with him and his family, either at his house or at
the church following Mass. During the visit explain the Daily Mass
benefit.
State Deputy Jake Werner, will not allow any unnecessary
suspension without a personal contact: Suspension Procedures,
found in this handbook, MUST BE FOLLOWED.
Also encourage the Financial Secretary to enclose a copy of the
Membership Retention Letter with his second billing. A sample can
be found in this handbook.

committee (listed above in line 3) to make personal contact with the delinquent member to remind them of their obligation. They should ascertain any reasons for failure to pay. The committee member will provide a written report of his findings to the Grand Knight. If the member is experiencing financial difficulty, the Grand Knight will direct the committee members to visit the member and make arrangements to accommodate him )either a payment plan or other financial arrangement acceptable to the council).
5. Again, a full report is to be provided to the grand knight as to why the member Is delinquent and why
he is considering leaving the Order. Financial difficulty is not a valid reason for suspension.
6. Following this month a member that is still delinquent in his dues - the Notice of Intent to Retain is the
be submitted by the financial secretary and the grand knight.
7. Once accepted by Supreme, the Grand Knight must send electronically the Conversation Listing to the
District Deputy, State Retention Chairman, State Membership Director, and State Deputy. Along with a report of what the council has done and concluded for the member to be retained.
8. If the delinquent member does not meet his obligation or arrange a satisfactory payment schedule
within 60 days following processing the Notice of Intent to Retain, the council may file a Form 100 Membership Document, indicating suspension. However, the suspension will not be processed at the Supreme Council office unless a Notice of Intent to Retain has been on file of the required 60 days.
9. The Notice of Intent to Retain becomes null and void 90 days following the date it is recorded at the
Supreme Council office. After the 90-day period has elapsed, the form will be removed from the file under the assumption the council has been successful in retaining the member.
Notes: If subsequently the member on whom the council previously filed a Notice of Intent to retain should again become delinquent, the entire billing/retention process must be re-implemented as described herein. If a member is not suspended by May 1st he is carried through the next entire Columbian year on the councils Per Capita. If the council is making all its requirements to achieve Star Council I would suggest not suspending the members but carrying the number of numbers needed to make Star Council Award until the start of the new Columbian year on July 1st, even if this means starting the billing/retention process over again.
Financial Secretary can not be the Retention Chairman

Dear Brother Knight and Spouse, Please read this letter before you make any decisions. It has come to my attention that your local council has sent you a notice of intent to suspend you from the Order of the Knights of Columbus. Please read this letter to see what you will be losing. There are two very important items. Give a gift of a lifetime, only available to all Knights of Columbus Members. What will you lose? Why do you want to lose it? We can Fix it? What better gift could you leave your family than a Daily Mass for the repose of the soul of their mother and father? Yes, since the inception of the Order, a Daily Mass is offered for all deceased members and their spouse. To have a Mass said at your local parish a stipend is given to the Parish and a Mass is offered for your loved one. Just think, for being a member of the Knights of Columbus a Mass will be offered every day for eternity – priceless. Another one of the many benefits available is the Family Fraternal Benefit. We offer many other benefits from your local council, along with the encouragement of the local Bishop, and Priest, and His Holiness Pope Francis. Please forward your dues to the local council or return it to me for processing, or if you have moved and want to transfer to another council fill out the form, or if you want to withdraw from the Knights also sign it return it I will take care of the rest of the details. Roundtable “A Knights of Columbus Presence in Every Parish.”
Living in service to all is one of the most dynamic qualities of being a Knight. A
unique way for Knights to serve is by helping out in local parishes, especially in those
churches that do not have a Knights of Columbus presence and are not large enough
to have their own council. The Order requests council members to extend services to
such parishes. This can be accomplished by establishing a Parish Round Table in
which current member Knights help local parishes. The parish priest will identify the
services he requires. The Parish Round Table Coordinator will then work with
members of the Parish Round Table and the council to fulfill his wishes.
A Round Table Booklet #2632 is available from the Supreme office for proper set up
of a Round Table.
A Coordinator is needed. He reports to the local council once a month.
There are no elected offices
There are no regular meetings
Benefits of a Round Table: The Pastor sets the programs
Pastor involvement is as he wishes
Obtaining membership goals are made easier

Ceremonials
There are four different ceremonials in the order of the Knights of Columbus, one for each
degree of the Order. Yes, all four of the ceremonials are secretive. This is the only thing that is
to be known to only Knights of Columbus members, everything else we do is open to the public.
Our ADMISSIONS degree pertains to CHARITY;
The Grand Knight of the council is responsible for the Admissions degree initiations.
They can be done by a team or by the DVD that Supreme has supplied. There should be
at least one admissions degree per month per district. Each District Deputy is
responsible to have this set up and reported to the State Deputy. This is the first step into
Knighthood. Encourage the members to continue on.
Our FORMATION degree pertains to UNITY;
District Deputies are responsible for the formation degree initiations. This is coordinated
between the ceremonials chairman, District Deputies, State Deputy and the Captain of the
formation degree team. This can be done as a stand-alone but is usually held in
conjunction with the knighthood degree.
Our KNIGHTHOOD degree pertains to FRATERNITY;
The State Deputy is responsible for the knighthood degree initiations.
All knighthood degree exemplifications are to be done by a conferring officer that is
appointed by the State Deputy. All these degrees are approved by the Supreme office as
of the place and date. The only person to cancel this degree is the State Deputy, that
being said; it takes communication between the District Deputy and the State Deputy
weeks prior to this event.
When we combine the three degrees, we then refer to it as our Major Degree. Major degrees are
set by the district deputy in conjunction with the ceremonial chairman.
Our FOURTH degree pertains to PATRIOTISM;
The District Master of the State is responsible for setting up this degree after approval of
date and place by the Supreme office. District Master and Faithful Navigator are
responsible for putting the team together and doing the exemplification. This is held as a
stand-alone exemplification.

Insurance
Following are some examples of support that we can offer the State Office, as well as our
Local Councils.
SUPPORT
Since there are a number of newly elected officers statewide, the Agency would like to re-
mind everyone of the support that the Agency Field Force can offer you. We would like to
work closely with all the State Officers and Grand Knights when it comes to Insurance
Promotion and also assist when possible with Membership Recruitment.
DEVELOP A PLAN
The Grand Knight should feel free to call the General Agent or Field Agent to develop a plan
involving promotions for both council meeting attendance and the Order’s insurance program.
TEAMWORK
Throughout the Order, our Fraternal and Insurance aspects must be blended into a smooth
working team. Such is the task of the Grand Knights and the Insurance Promotion and
Membership Chairman. General Agents and Field Agents are an integral part of the council’s
membership and retention campaigns. Their expertise regarding the Fraternal Benefits of the
Order and their knowledge of the members of their councils is invaluable. Use these
professional assets to your advantage.
COMMUNICATION
Communication is the key to everyone’s success, so feel free to contact General Agent – Pat
Dolan, or any of the Field Agents with any concerns or questions you may have.

New Council / Council Reactivation
Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus to be a fraternity of men distinguished
by their Catholicity. Such a fraternity as this – pillared on the virtues of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and
Patriotism, and ordered towards the good of the poor and the family – is indispensable to the parishes
and communities of our time.
A Knights of Columbus council is a concrete opportunity for men to participate in a fraternity
that fosters the mission of the Church. In light of this, the Order encourages the formation and
reactivation of councils so that men may live out the Faith in their parishes and communities.
Men as Knights of Columbus become leaders and role models, not only by participating in
Order-wide activities, programs, and initiatives, but also (and primarily) in developing unique
activities oriented towards the specific needs in the parish and community of their council. As
such, these men – through the services of their council and the fellowship of their fraternity –
encounter the person of Jesus Christ and experience the Triune Love, making them better hus-
bands, better fathers, better men.
Process of Forming a New Council:
The following is intended to be a summary of the process for forming a new council of the Knights of
Columbus. More detailed guidelines can be found in the New Council Development Guidelines

SEND TO: Knights of Columbus Necrology Report
Necrology Report can also be found online—www.nd-kofc.org
(Contact information for Necrology can be found in the State Council Directory)
NECROLOGY REPORT This form is to be kept on file and used to record any deaths in your council between the 2019 and 2020 convention. To assist us in preparing the Necrology for the Annual State Convention Memorial Mass, please submit this report by March 1, 2020. Council name: __________________________ _____________________Council number: ___________________ Council city: __________________________________________________________ _____Please check here if there are no deaths to report in your council Financial Secretary ______________________________________ Date___________________ NAME (please type or print each letter clearly) STATE OFFICES HELD (IF APPLICABLE)
Include name and address of spouse / family member so they can be invited to the convention Memorial Mass.
The definition of a “reflection” is broad but should be a day-long event at minimum and could possi-bly encompass an entire weekend.
Councils can attend religious retreats and days of reflection organized by other groups. However, if they are attending a reflection and not planning it themselves, council attendance should be signifi-cant with at least 10 percent of the council or a minimum of 10 members participating.
Reflections and retreats can be held at the coun-cil level but councils could also collaborate with other councils in the area to host a Spiritual Re-flection.
If planning a retreat for the council, consider holding it on church property and have volunteers pack lunch or provide their own meals to defer costs.
Be creative! Make a pilgrimage to a nearby basil-ica, monastery or convent. Celebrate Mass with the religious or your chaplain/pastor.
It is strongly encouraged that councils incorpo-rate Mass within their program, celebrating the liturgy with your chaplain/pastor. Also, incorpo-rate opportunities for other sacramental and litur-gical activities such confession, Eucharistic ado-ration, a rosary or all of these.
Consecration to the Holy Family: Set a date for the consecration and announce it to your parish a month before the official day. The tra-ditional recommendation is the first Sunday after Christmas.
Asking your pastor to make an announcement
at all Sunday Masses the week before the consecra-tion. Ask him to explain what a consecration is, why it is being undertaken, and how to properly prepare.
Suggesting that each family pray together each
day for the week before the consecration. Ideally, this will lead them to continue the practice, at least on a weekly basis, after the consecration has oc-curred.
Encouraging each family to intentionally fast
from something ahead of the consecration. This fast should last at least a week leading up to the conse-cration. It is strongly encouraged to fast from some-thing that would normally be consumed or an activity that is regularly done. Fasting helps to discipline our minds and hearts and moves us to be more focused on God.
Strongly encouraging each member of all parish
families to go to confession before the consecration. Hosting an event in the middle of the week prior to the Sunday consecration. One idea for this event is to invite a guest speaker to discuss the importance of consecrating oneself to the Holy Family, the model of the Holy Family, the meaning and impact of consecrations, or related themes. Be sure to set aside time at your event for prayer in community. Consider praying the rosary together and be sure to recite the consecration prayer together in prepara-tion.
Helping Hands: As a council, generate program ideas that would benefit those less fortunate in the community. Ef-forts could include:
As a parish, cook and/or serve food at no charge at a local soup kitchen or parish hall. (This could be a good family activity.) As a council, assist in cleaning and repairing the facilities of a local nonprofit organization (i.e., fixing broken tables, painting walls). Hold classes to teach trade skills (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.). Organize collection drives for specific supplies such as blankets, backpacks, toiletries, and clothing. Raise money for a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter or other nonprofit organization through vari-ous events. Money could go toward the purchase of specific supplies and appliances, such as a new large freezer or dishwasher, or it could be donated in bulk. Novena for Life: Set a date for the novena. Traditionally this takes place in January. Consider incorporating it as part of the council’s participation in a 40 Days for Life campaign or schedule it to precede a major feast day or pro-life event.
Anchor the beginning and end of the nine days with public church services like a Mass or rosary Consider organizing a social activity during the novena for the parish to come together and cele-brate life Involve members of many parish organizations, especially the parish school and religious education leaders, in promoting and participating in the novena and services Invite members of local culture of life groups to join in your novena and services
Here are some ideas that you can use for your SP-7 to complete the mandatory programs:

Marian Icon Prayer & Rosary Program
As Knights of Columbus, we should see our membership in the Order as our opportunity to
grow closer to Christ. We do this by our good works, and also through prayer. Brother
Knights: the core of Church Activities in our North Dakota Knights of Columbus is our
devotion to praying together.
The Supreme Knights of Columbus prescribes that we use Marian Devotion as the centerpiece
of our prayer. At our Admissions Degree, we are presented with a Blessed Rosary, instructed
to carry it with us, and recite the Rosary Prayer often. This is a Marian Devotion building
block. Our North Dakota Councils are involved in the year-round, in-state movement of the
Holy Mother Mary portrait and the accompanying special prayer opportunity. We are
encouraged to conduct special Council and Parish events where collective prayer and venera-
tion of the Holy Mother.
Two other 365 days a year Knights of Columbus prayer priorities include the Perpetual Rosary
for Respect of Life and the Perpetual Rosary for Vocations. Follow the schedule published in
the Pro-gram Book, and see to it your council is making sure that Council, Parish, or group
rosaries are said on days your Council is assigned to play its part. We need this Rosary
recitation to occur every day of the year.
Also, we will be calling Councils’ attention to the “Building the Domestic Church” campaign
currently emphasized by Knights of Columbus Supreme. There are a dozen specific activities –
some new, some familiar – from which a Council can select and engage, helping advance The
Domestic Church effort. This list of Domestic Church activities may be viewed on the Supreme
web-site, where explanations of the activities are provided (go to www.kofc.org, enter Domestic
Church in search panel). Councils are reminded that, for Columbia Award consideration, 4 of a
Council’s major program activities entered on the Award application must be designated as
“Building the Domestic Church” activities.

RSVP Refund Support Vocations Program
Thank you to all the councils, assemblies, the State Council and the Foundation for your prayers and
generous donations to RSVP this past year and in the year to come.
Between the Bismarck and Fargo Diocese we are blessed to have more than 46 men in formation for
the priesthood and several women entering the religious life in North Dakota. These men and women
need our support to help further their vocations. First and most importantly these men and women
need our prayers as they discern God’s plan for them.
In addition to our prayers they need our financial assistance. These men have many expenses that go
beyond just tuition & books. I ask that you consider financially sup-porting one or more of the
seminarians or women entering religious life in North Dakota through RSVP. I would ask, too, that you
consider making RSVP a standard item in your budget as we all reap the benefits from assisting these
men and women in fulfilling their vocations. For every $500 your council gives to a seminarian,
Supreme will refund $100 back to your council. They will refund a council up to $400 per seminarian.
However, if you are not able to donate $500, a gift of any size is appreciated by our seminarians and
should be reported to the state RSVP chairman.
Updated lists of the seminarians will be made available on the State website as they are received from
each diocese. If you need assistance in choosing recipients, please call Fr. Kyle Metzger of the Fargo
Diocese (701- 356-7948) or Fr. Josh Walz of the Bismarck Diocese (701- 222-3035). You may also con-
tact me with any questions at [email protected] or 701-260-1983. When an RSVP has been made, a
copy of form 2863 or a copy of the RSVP form included in the state program book should be sent to me.

Food for Families The Knights of Columbus
Food for Families Reimbursement Program
Food for Families Reimbursement Program can best be explained as neighbors helping
neighbors or families helping families. The program allows our councils to provide a helping
hand to the less fortunate in our communities by donating money or food to a local
community food bank or the parish food pantry. Let’s do our best to help those that are in
need but may not want to ask for help by participating in the program.
The Knights of Columbus Food for Families Reimbursement Program was established in
2012. Under this program, local Knights of Columbus councils or assemblies make an annual
contribution of $500 or more, or 1,000 pounds of food to a local community food bank or the
parish food pantry. For every $500 or 1,000 pounds of food contributed, the council or
assembly is eligible for a refund of $100 from the Supreme Council. The maximum refund a
council or assembly can receive is $500 per fraternal year. For Columbian Squires circles, the
minimum donation is $100, or 100 pounds of food, with each circle eligible to receive from
the Supreme Council a refund of $20 for each $100 donated or 100 pounds of food.
Reimbursement must be applied for in the fraternal year during which
contributions were made.
As resources permit, councils, assemblies and circles may provide support to multiple food
banks and/or food pantries. The minimum contribution to qualify for a refund is $500 ($100
for Squires circles) for each food bank/food pantry supported.
In addition to a refund for financial contributions, councils, assemblies and circles are also
eligible to receive a Food for Families plaque (and, in successive years, date plates signifying
years of participation) in recognition of manpower support provided to food banks and food
pantries.
When you participate in this program, remember to fill out the report form that is
due by June 30th. The report form #10057 can be found on the Supreme Knights
of Columbus website at kofc.org.

Shamrock Talk
Good (Morning/Evening) My name is _________ ___________, I
am a member of the Knights of Columbus (Council #__________)
of this parish and I would like to tell you about our Shamrock
program. This has been one of our ND State Council’s worthy
charities for over 40 years, with the proceeds going to the support
of “Home on the Range,” in Sentinel Butte, ND. This is a home,
started by Father Elwood E. Cassedy, for troubled teens that have
been disadvantaged in life, some with stories of trouble, neglect,
and abuse we can only imagine. These young men and women
need another chance at life and the reasons to make it a success.
The teachings and values of our Catholic religion are used as a
binding element with the traditions many of us grew up with.
Prayer, daily chapel service, education, a sense of personal
responsibility, a renewed self-esteem, and everyday hard work
involved in running a ranch are part of what makes it work. This
being a working ranch, with these teens being the first priority, you
can understand why they still need the financial help we can give.
This help will make sure the experience continues to change lives
and make a difference in our world.
Yes, Home on the Range needs your prayers too, but your
generous financial help is also needed to keep this dream alive and
continue in its great success. Please make a donation and wear the
Shamrock with Catholic pride. My brother Knights will be at the
doors with Shamrocks if you wish to make a free will donation. On
behalf of the teens at Home on the Range, I Thank You!

Community Activities / Tootsie Rolls
If every Council in our state would try at least one case of Tootsie Rolls at their
activities or If every Council in our state would try at least one case of Tootsie Rolls at their activities
or events, generous patrons would have the chance to contribute in a “Free Will” offering to support
those special individuals with their own dream of success and accomplishment. These individuals
prove their own dedication and will, we can only try to match their enthusiasm. Please do what
Knights do and contribute a little of your time and effort, so you too, cam make a difference. We hope
to encourage you and your Council to help grow this program and increase our support of the “Special
Olympics.”
Tootsie Rolls will be available throughout the year and can be distributed at state meetings, please
order ahead and arrange for someone to pick them up. State officers and officials have often delivered
the Tootsie Rolls, but planning is important. Tootsie Rolls must be ordered through a Council and will
be billed at the current rate of $20.00 per case, but as always, price is subject to change by the vendor.
Our hope is that each Tootsie Roll case will provide funds for the intended purpose, so please
remember to be generous if you use them as treats or a Council giveaway. Tootsie Roll signs are
available by email request and can be printed and laminated by you to prolong their usable life.
Councils will be recognized at the 2020 State Convention for their success in this program, but all
payments and funds must be turned in and recorded by April, 1, 2020. Tootsie Roll funds must be
submitted to your Worthy State Treasurer, Kevin Boehm at the address given at the bottom of this
page.
To order Tootsie Rolls please visit the state website at www.nd-kofc.org and go to the Tootsie Roll

send you a bill for them. The State Community Chair will contact you on getting you your Tootsie

Are you ready for a party? The party starts as soon as you have your KofC Soccer Challenge Kit ordered. You can order online at the website www.kofc.org then in the search field type soccer challenge. You should have your orders in by August 2019. All Grand Knights and District Deputies should have the official guide for the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge in their possession. This booklet lays out the program for the Soccer Challenge. Page 3 shows how the soccer net should be marked off. I realize many of our councils are in towns that do not have soccer teams or facilities. Looking at page 3, it would be very easy to build a soccer goal if none are available. This would be a great way to get members of councils working together on a project. It would also be a way to get the name of the Knight of Columbus out among the community, not just the parish. Page 4 lists the eligibility criteria for participants. Notice, there is no requirement to belong to the KofC or a Catholic Parish. Pages 7 through 10 are the guidelines for the Council Chairman who is handling the KofC Soccer Challenge. Advertisement is of great importance in making this a successful program for all. District Deputies and Grand Knights of each District should get together and discuss the program. Those councils that do not have soccer in their area could work with the DD’s and split the cost of buying soccer balls among the councils in the area as well as the cost to build a goal. Soccer balls can be bought for $100.00 for ten official balls. Split the cost and the use among the councils of the area and it works out to $25.00 a piece. The goal can be built for approximately $30.00 plus the time of the Knights to put it together. If you are in an area that has soccer teams in schools as well as park board teams, talk with your local Schools or Park Districts to secure soccer fields and equipment to use. Most will be more than glad to help you. All it takes is a visit or telephone call to make this happen. This is a chance for our community youngsters to take part in one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. It also gives the Knights of Columbus a great opportunity to recruit new members at no cost! If you have questions or problems with implementing the program, please feel free to call me.

The Knights of Columbus partnering with Special Olympics is a real testament to
the charitable giving of KC members nationwide. Since charity is the first
principle of our order, knights throughout the state, are being a shining example of
that principle. Your continued support of this program is important as it relies
solely on organizations like Knights of Columbus to function.
When setting up your council programs for the new fraternal year, remember to
include a fundraiser for Special Olympics.
A reminder to all councils that the Special Olympics Form 4584 is due January

The Father McGivney Guild was established in 1997 to gather and disseminate information
on the life and legacy of Father Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of
Columbus in 1882. Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree in 2008 in recognizance of this
exemplary priest and his accomplishments, which advance the cause of sainthood and the
distinction of being called a “Venerable Servant of God”.
Membership in the Guild is free and is open to all individuals and households. Knights of
Columbus members are not automatically members, as they must elect to do so. We are all
invited to become members of the Guild and participate in promoting devotion to this
“Servant of God”. Membership in the Guild has many benefits. All Guild members are
enrolled in a weekly mass, receive a bimonthly newsletter, except July and August, with
periodic updates on the progress of the cause for canonization.
I would ask each District Deputy and Grand Knight when attending an exemplification to
ensure that each member present is a member of the Guild and if not, present them as well
as any new member with the registration paperwork to sign on at this time.
Joining is easy. Just send me your name (and your wife’s) and address to my mailing address
or email address as noted below. In addition, you can call me at 701-775-5918 and I will take
care of this for you. If you prefer and have access to the internet, key in fathermcgivney.org

NORTH DAKOTA KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FOUNDATION The Knights of Columbus Foundation was created for the purpose of providing financial as-
sistance for religious, educational and charitable programs of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in North Dakota. Today that same mission holds true and is quite evi-dent in the manner in which we continue to make use of the Foundation earnings. To date your Foundation has provided $230,800 in scholarships to those in religious formation. This past fraternal year $1,000 was donated to University of Mary Grotto project and the St. Paul’s Newman Center building project. Additionally, $1,000 was donated to the St. Bernard Mis-sion School in Fort Yates in the name of Fr. Jacob Schumacher. We have only been able to do this because of the generosity of so many Brother Knights and their families, as well as the State Council, local Councils, Assemblies, and others from throughout our state. The North Dakota State Council continues to play an important role in helping build the in-vestment portfolio of the Foundation in many ways. Their continued commitment of having the Foundation share in the annual raffle proceeds, Christopher Fund, support of the Foun-dation Convention Auction and the annual Foundation Golf Scramble are most appreciated. Also, their help in growing the Foundation by awarding points for the Outstand Council Con-test to councils that provide financial support to the Foundation is another sign of their belief in what an important role the Foundation can play in growing Columbianism here in our state. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, I ask that all our councils take lead in what the State Council is doing for your Foundation by supporting the many functions they spon-sor and promote that help grow the Foundation. Every council can do this by: Holding a fundraiser with proceeds going in support of the Foundation, thus earning points for the Outstanding Council Contest. Support the State Councils Annual Raffle by selling tickets and earning money not only for the State Council and the Foundation, but also your council. Taking part in the annual Foundation Golf Scramble by sponsoring a hole and/or a team or simply encourage your council members to participate. Support the annual Convention Auction by providing items to be bid on. Promoting use of the Foundation’s Death Memorial, All-Occasion and Christmas Cards. Promoting the purchasing of a life insurance policy designating the Foundation as the owner or assigning either all or a portion of an existing policy or annuity to the Foundation as a beneficiary. Please consider incorporating these suggestions and include them in your councils plan for the upcoming fraternal year. If you have any questions or concerns about the Foundation, please contact any Foundation Board Member. The current board members are:
Brian Kingsley, Fargo, President Mike Steiner, Fargo Jake Werner, Casselton Duane Zwinger, Fargo Dean Rubbelke, Minot, Vice-President Brian Dukart, Dickinson Dr. Cory Badinger, Fargo, Treasurer Dr. Steve Kourajian, Harvey Mike Bannach, Fargo, Secretary

Building the Domestic Church A Seven step program-Into the Breach
Family Fully Alive In founding the Knights of Columbus. Father Michael J. McGivney sought to respond to the crisis in family life affecting Catholics in 19th-century America. As a young man he witnessed firsthand the challenges his widowed mother faced with seven children at home. Later, as a priest he confronted on a daily basis the problems affecting the families of his parish community due to poverty, violence, alcoholism, immigration, anti-Catholic prejudice and discrimination. Father McGivney’s vision for family life was not simply that each family might find financial and material aid. He understood that holiness is the calling of all baptized Christians. And, seeing as his two brothers followed him into the priesthood, we can understand how truly important the “sanctuary of the home” was to the McGivney family.
Consecration to the Holy Family Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles — and partly as a result of conquering them — families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out this joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has com-posed a new prayer through which families may come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. Every Knights of Columbus council should invite families of their parish to offer this prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses on the first Sunday after Christmas. This day is traditionally celebrated as the feast of the Holy Family. It is our hope that this prayer may strengthen our families, revitalize our parishes
Father’s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows Father’s Day is an important time to celebrate the role of fatherhood within the Christian family and is an ideal day for fathers to celebrate and honor their marriage vows. Annually sponsoring this event on the third Sunday of June will serve to make your council visible to the parish community and show your member’s support for all fathers and husbands. During these events, Knights and their wives — along with all the married couples of the parish — have an opportunity to affirm their commitment to their wedding vows. After the event, councils should host a reception where they can congratulate each couple and thank them for their witness. Working together with your pastor, provide the opportunity for married couples to recall and affirm their wedding vows together with a special blessing during or after the Sunday liturgy. In the ‘Support Materials’ section we provide two suggested programs you might consider
Holy Family Prayer Program The Holy Family Prayer Program began August 4 at the 133rd Supreme Convention in Philadelphia. This program features an image of the Holy Family. Each Knights of Columbus jurisdiction received several Holy Family images, which will be the centerpiece of prayer services conducted in churches and council meeting places throughout the Order for the duration of the program. The Holy Family Prayer Program is the 17th Marian Prayer Program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, beginning with the first program – honoring Mary under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe - in 1979. In preparation for the 1982 Centennial of the Order, the second prayer program was initiated, which highlighted the Holy Family. Since then, the Blessed Mother has been honored by her Knights under her titles of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Pochaiv, Our Lady of the Assumption, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Charity. These Orderwide programs of Marian Prayer have gathered together more than 16 million people at some 140,000 prayer services conducted at local councils and parishes

Sunday Rosary Program To help bring parishioners together in a spiritual activity and promote devotion to Mary, the Knights of Columbus Supreme council is pleased to announce a new church activity, the 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Knights, their families and other parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. The 5th Sunday Rosary services will be conducted on Jul 31, Oct. 30, Jan 29, and April 30, during the 2016-2017 fraternal year. Finger rosaries that can be used during the program, are available from the Supreme Council and can be ordered by using the 5th Sunday Rosary Kit (SR-KIT). Participants may also use their own rosaries, and Knights are encouraged to use the rosaries that they received during their First Degree. Conducting this Church Activity every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month as part of the 2016-2017 fraternal year will allow your council to list each one in the Church Activities section on the Columbian Award Application (#SP-7). In addition, it provides a visible “faith formation” program that will engage current members and their families, and offer parish families who are not yet part of the council an opportunity to experience the faith and fellowship that comes with being a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Journey to the Inn For many centuries, one of the most effective means of evangelization was the dramatization of events recounted in the New Testament. During the Middle Ages these reenactments became known as “mystery” or “passion” plays. The most famous of these has been performed every 10 years since 1634 in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Franciscan missionaries used similar performances to great effect in transmitting the faith to the native peoples of New Spain. One of the most popular became known as Las Posadas — meaning “the Inns” or “the Shelters.” Today, thousands of parishes throughout Mexico continue this tradition and celebrate the Posada during Advent. Each year, millions of Mexican children together with their parents retrace the steps of Mary and Joseph in search of a room at the inn. In many parishes the Posada is celebrated with hymns, a rosary, piñatas and a meal. Several years ago, as part of our effort to reach out to Hispanic communities, we began promoting Posada celebrations through our councils. The program became so popular that last year we adapted it for use by all parishes and published a booklet titled Journey to The Inn: An Advent Celebration.
Food for Families The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Orderwide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. To encourage local Knights of Columbus councils to participate in this worthwhile program, the Supreme Council offers financial rebates to councils, assemblies or Squires circles that donate food or money. For councils or assemblies, the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or for every 1,000 pounds of food that a council contributes to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maximum of $500 per council/assembly per fraternal year. Circles will receive a refund from the Supreme Council of $20 for every $100 donated, or every 200 pounds of food that is contributed - up to a maximum refund of $100 per circle per fraternal year. Reported contributions of food and/or monetary donations should be cumulative for the fraternal year and there is no need to send in a refund request every time a contribution is made. However, to be eligible for the rebate, the cumulative total of contributions of food/money needs to reach a minimum of $500 or 1,000 pounds of food for councils or assemblies, and a minimum of $100 or 200 pounds of food for circles. In addition, the Supreme Council recognizes that participating in this program can be time consuming for the local council. Should a council choose to participate in this program, this will fulfill all four of the Family Activity requirements for the Columbian Award. In order to qualify as fulfilling all four requirements, the council must collect and donate a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and council members must contribute a minimum of 100 man-hours in the program.
