In our office, at ISN programming, and in communication with members and friends, the resounding message is that we are thriving as a “network that networks forjustice.” Each year, as part of the Ignatian family, we renew our commit-ment to intentionally seek out ways to connect individuals and groups engaged in work for justice—to bridge generations, institutions, and organizations—to provide time and space to share ideas, recommit ourselves to the work we do, and recen-ter our efforts in the context of Ignatian spirituality.

Over the past 12 months, our work was animated by Pope Francis’s monumental visit to the United States, and his historic address to Congress. The scope of the Ignatian network was powerfully evident surrounding this event, as ISN mobilized more than 38,000 individuals to attend “Pope2Congress” watch parties in their schools, parishes, ministry offices, and homes.

We have continued our work to form leaders of all ages through our dynamic and growing programs and resources for high school and college students, parishioners, and alumni —all designed to support the Ignatian network’s commitment to explore the intersection between faith and social justice.

Online Presence: The Ignatian network grew online this past year with over 8,000 new social media followers and more than 220,000 unique visitors to the ISN website.

Alta Gracia Speakers Tour-Fall 2015: In partnership with Solidarity Ignite, ISN hosted apparel workers from the Dominican Republic based Alta Gracia Living Wage clothing factory. Reaching 12 states and 27 schools, the tour raised awareness about ethical consumerism and the positive implications of “a salary with dignity.”

“Celebrating this past year’s liturgy at the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice,I experienced firsthand the value of ISN’s work across the Jesuit network. They lift up the faith and justice mission of our ministry by uniting people and institutions to illuminate the voice of the marginalized.”

In the fall of 2015, the ISN Board of Directors engaged in a series of listening sessions that provided insights as they entered into a process to revitalize our mission and vision statements. After meetings in seven cities across the country as well as with our National Advisory Council, the board approved these revitalized statements in April 2016.

The ISN mission and vision statements had not been revised since 2010, and much had changed for our organization since then. Most notably, our programs and digital presence has grown over that time. In addition, over 25 new member institutions became engaged

in ISN’s work—including additional Jesuit parishes and social ministries, Jesuit schools in Canada, and non-Jesuit high schools and universities. ISN is the “network that networks for justice” and that network is growing!

The new statements also responded to the reality that the high school and college students of today have a different context for the deaths of the Jesuits and their lay companions murdered in El Salvador in 1989. These young people were not alive when these events happened and do not have a frame of reference for the early years of the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice. Thus, the new mission statement represents the significant grounding our work has in the legacy of these Salvadoran martyrs.

“We must possess the hope that this journey we are on, no matter

the speed, will lead us to justice....With our passion for change, we all

have to keep moving forward, for ourselves, for our communities,

for the greater glory of God.”

Brendan Underwood was one of many powerful speakers to reflect on the Teach-In theme “Bridges.”

1,700+ participants from the U.S. as well as Canada, El Salvador, and Mexico considered the “Bridges”

that need to be envisioned, mended, and built to let hope and light shine forth amid a world scarred by

injustice—including racism, which Brendan addressed while reflecting on violence directed at

young black men. Capitalizing on the energy of the Pope Francis’s visit to Congress, over 1,200 Ignatian

advocates took to Capitol Hill to call for humane immigration reform human rights in Central America,

and environmental justice.

“I attended the gathering with the intention of giving to others but received so many rewards in return.”

Jesuit Parish Gathering for Justice...provided an opportunity to compare and assess social justice work at each parish and walk away with ideas and access to information, resources, and opportunities for inter-parish collaboration.

“I [now] have people around the U.S. to support me and to connect me with various social justice projects and ideas. It is truly a humbling and exciting thing!”

University Leaders Summit was...energizing and encouraging. Ignatian spirituality workshops provided an increased understanding of the solid foundation on which Jesuit work for social justice is built.

3 programs, 1 purpose:

Through three programs —University Leaders Summit, Arrupe Leaders Summit, and the Jesuit Parish Gathering for Social Justice—ISN provides dynamic networking opportunities for high school students, university undergraduates, and adult parish ministers. Participants are invited to renew their passion for justice through reflection centered in the Ignatian tradition, dialogue, and witnessed examples of work being done throughout the Ignatian family in the U.S.

“One of the best things about the Summit is how it invites students to leave their comfort zone and learn about one another’s schools, what they are up to, what they are passionate about.”

Arrupe Leaders Summit...built confidence in student leaders and sparked action on campus, including the formation of a gender equality club and growth of a student-teacher racial studies association.

Nearly 40,000 viewers. 347 watch parties. 5,500 tweets and hundreds more social media mentions. More than 30 news stories. The measurable impact alone of ISN’s Pope2Congress campaign, focused on Pope Francis’s historical address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress in September 2015, is remarkable.

The Pope2Congress campaign encouraged individuals and institutions to register as watch party hosts, and provided a party-planning toolkit developed by ISN, including discussion questions, live-tweeting instructions, giveaway prizes, and even bingo cards.

However, the impact of Pope2Congress extended far beyond the numbers. By generating excitement and creating interest-building materials, ISN contrib-uted to an experience that, in the words of Ben Horgan, Director of Ignatian

Mission and Identity at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Md., “allowed students to catch the excitement” of the Pope’s visit, “to hear the language, made familiar through prayer experiences at their Jesuit school, through the Teach-In, through the Arrupe Leaders Summits, echoed in such a real, public way” in the Pope’s address.

Approximately 125 Loyola Blakefield students joined the nearly 40,000 other watch party attendees across the country in remotely witnessing the Pope’s address. Students engaged in dialogue and reflection on the implications of hearing a Church leader witness to their faith and the connection it has to politics and just law making in the U.S. Loyola Blakefield students have taken the Pope’s message to draw connections between his words and their home communities, putting their faith into action through service and social analysis, echoing Pope Francis’s call for care for the environment and attention to issues surrounding poverty.

“Repentance is a discipline Americans have never been good at practicing.”Kaya Oakes’ words, from her Ash Wednesday reflection, served as a powerful commencement of Lift Every Voice, ISN’s Lenten blog series addressing America’s original sin of racism through the lens of Ignatian spirituality and the daily readings. A cast of writers from throughout the Ignatian network lamented racial injustice in our communities and reflected upon the Gospel call to repent, pray, and act in solidarity with those affected by an enduring legacy of systemic and personal racial discrimination.

Contributors included Saint Louis University president Fred Pestello, Ph.D., and Boston College theologian M. Shawn Copeland, Ph.D., in addition to Jesuit priests, professors, grassroots activists, university administrators, and authors, many known for their work in the realm of racism.

The “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” Fund was announced by the ISN Board of Directors in early 2014, to further ISN’s work to commemorate the 25th anni-versary of the Martyrs of El Salvador and the 10th anniversary of ISN’s founding. The fund provides long-term support to our social jus-tice leader formation programs and enables our staff to innovate new programs and initia-tives that meet the needs of emerging social justice issues. The resources of the fund will be used over the course of five years starting in 2016. The financial goal for the fund was $100,000, and we currently have $75,000 in pledges and gifts. Donors who have made a financial commitment to the fund include:

Legacy of the Martyrs

On April 27, 2016, ISN honored Fr. Michael Garanzini, S.J., with the 2016 Robert M. Holstein Faith Doing Justice Award at a cocktail reception on the campus of Loyola University Chicago.

A celebrated university administrator, professor, and author, Fr. Garanzini has a long history of merging higher education and a commitment to act for justice. During his tenure as president, Loyola University Chicago made significant strides in environmental sustainability and established itself as a trailblazer in providing pathways to higher education to underserved populations.

(L-R) Previous winners of the Holstein Award include Fr. Charlie Currie, S.J. (2009); Fr. Steve Privett, S.J. (2010); Fr. Garanzini (2016); and Fr. Don MacMillan, S.J. (2012).

In October of 2015, Kevin and Trena Yonkers-Talz were presented with ISN’s Legacy of the Martyrs Award. Kevin and Trena are co-founders/co-directors of the El Salvador based Casa de la Solidaridad study abroad program sponsored by Santa Clara University, a program founded in 1999 to further the legacy of the Jesuit martyrs and their companions through experiences of solidarity.

Happy Hour Q&A With Helen Prejean, CSJThe 2015 Young Alumni Happy Hour, held at the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice, drew nearly 200 young alumni and current and former Jesuit volunteers. The evening included a Q&A with Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ emceed by Fr. James Martin, S.J.

Solidarity on TapIn partnership with Jesuit Volunteer Corps, ISN hosted Solidarity on Tap events in Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Detroit. Hundreds of young alumni and former Jesuit Volunteers gathered to socialize, network, and reflect on the relationship between faith and justice.
