  • What is the

    root cause of

    complex

    adversity?

    6

    Toxic Stress:

    Prolonged activation of

    stress response systems

    in the absence of

    protective relationships.

  • Where do we Start?

    Opportunity to

Coordinate Tiered Supports:Research shows that > 35% poverty in a community is a tipping point where taxes alone cannot keep up with the complex needs of the citizens. A community-wide coordinated effort is necessary to turn the tide.

In Oklahoma we have 763 zip codes, however there are specific zip codes with more than 500 children under the age of 5 experiencing poverty. We need to have a diversified investment:

    • 12 zip codes with 50% or more of families living below poverty

    • 43 zip codes with 33% to 49% families living below poverty

    • 65 zip codes with 15 to 32% families living below poverty

  • Why Are We Ignoring Toxic Stress? -When should we implement the Care Continuum?

-What are *“signs of distress” before Intercept Zero?

*Signs of Distress:- suspensions from daycare or Head Start (referral from early childhood education provider) - unexcused absences or suspensions from school (referral from teacher, counselor, principal)- unexcused absences from work (referral from supervisor at work)- delinquent payments (referral from lending institutions; utility companies, landlord, auto loans)- frequent visits to urgent care clinics/emergency room (referral from health care provider)

To Collaborate on Strategies with Abundant & Multiplying

    Resources….

we must focus our energy on this question:

  • 11

    Priceless Question:

How can we offer a menu of equity-based & supportive pathways

(treatment/prevention options) for children, youth, families & staff experiencing

toxic stress who are starting to show signs of distress

before their lives fall apart and need *high-cost services?

*High-cost services= foster care, homeless, jail, prison, etc.
