cool when Communists threaten their idyllic town? Mark your calendar to
come see this farcical 1950’s romp behind whose humor lies social and
political observations in the new age of gay marriage, as well as an
affirming story of love, friendship and female desire.

SHARE THE PLATE: May
Central Virginia Sanctuary Network (CVSN)
The Immigrant Justice Team has received a matching challenge for this
month’s share the plate recipient, The Central Virginia Sanctuary Network
(CVSN). The first $2,000 donated through the share the plate collection
will be matched, doubling every dollar donated up to this amount. The
CVSN is a network of faith communities in central Virginia that are
providing support and solidarity to neighbors, friends, and family who fear
being detained, deported, or profiled.
As a member congregation, First UU is working with CVSN and other faith
communities to:
1. Advocate for more just and equitable legislation;
2. Prepare to provide physical housing for people at risk of deportation;
3. Help transport people to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)
check-ins and local hearings;
4. Hold trainings;
5. Set up rapid response networks, and;
6. Press cities and the state to get ICE out of schools, jails, and courts.
One of the most pressing and urgent needs of the network is to help
establish and build up a legal assistance fund. The Network receives
requests for financial assistance as the costs associated with filing
immigration paperwork, going through the legal process, bond money if
detained by ICE, etc. is much higher than most families can afford.
1. Filing for DACA extension costs $495.
2. Bond for someone detained by ICE starts at $1,500 (but is typically
closer to $10,000) and must be paid in full.
3. The typical immigration case costs start at $2,500 and often end up
costing over $12,000 and can be as high as $25,000.
Most of the money the network provides helps with bond as we know that
cases fought while a person is out of detention have a 70% higher rate of
success then those fought while the person is in detention. Our Share the
Plate donation will help the network in providing this financial assistance
to people at risk of deportation. Please join in supporting this critically
important organization. All donations are very gratefully received.
Checks should be made payable to First UU.
A reminder about Share the Plate: The monies in the
collection (that aren’t designated as Pledge payments)
are split 50/50 with the recipient and First UU
